It's impossible to get a Peking Roast Duck that reaches the standard one can get in China and other parts of Asia because ducks are raised differently in the US. Kudos to the chefs at Peony's for sourcing good raw materials and roasting their ducks to as high a standard as they did. TL;DR: great for groups and eating Family Style -- think: large, sharable tapas. Do not get the tiramisu. Parking: garage or street parking only. Nearby garages have free retail parking for up to 3 hours, which includes Peony Kitchen. Menu: flimsy printer paper. Descriptive, no images. If you have a large order, you can mark the menu with a pen and hand it to the server. Atmosphere: feels like a Din Tai Fung. Is a bit dimly lit the further you go in. They will open the glass walls during summer so be ware of flies if you wish to dine. We had a couple that kept hovering around our food as we ate Family Style so it was hard to shoo the flies away with our hands in the center of the large table. Service: order and pay at the table, water yourself with pitchers provided. Larger groups can be seated in slightly more private rooms. 18% tip included in bill for large groups. Orange Chicken: was surprisingly really good! The sweet and sour flavor was nicely blended and the chicken had a delightful crunch with each bite. The meat was also tender and not dried or overcooked. Crispy Duck: I like this one! The skin was indeed crispy like a chip and putting the ingredients in the wrap is a cool thing to do with groups. The flavor is good too. I recommend this one if you have a group of people to dine with. Or, you can get it for yourself too -- I won't judge. *wink* Cold Tossed Noodles: Serves as a nice palate cleanser or side dish but I wouldn't go and eat a whole bowl to yourself. It's a bit much and your taste buds get tired of it really quick. The cucumber chunks are a nice touch and are so refreshingly crunchy. Mixed Vegetables: everything is so nicely blanched and tasted very fresh. Lightly flavored and is an excellent palate cleanser between the strongly flavored meat dishes. I really like the al dente snow peas and the lotus roots. Five Flavored Beef: good flavor but a bit overwhelming on it's own. Packs a huge flavor punch. Use rice or veggies as a palate cleanser. Crispy Pork Belly: wow this is good! Not overly salty at all and has the most satisfying crunch. Really good appetizer or side dish for those in-between-bites. Tiramisu: Do not get this. I think this is by far one of the worst slices of tiramisu that I've had. The sponge was sopping, dripping wet, and it was like 90% cream/frosting. Our dining experience was excellent! The four of us came Sat night just after 6:00 and were seated after a very short wait. The place is fairly large and had lots of seating/tables for big groups. I'm always looking for a place with good local craft beers and this place had a decent little selection. Went with a Bodhizafa IPA ($7) and it was awesome. We ordered the Cucumber Salad ($10) and it was fantastic! We all enjoyed it and could have had eaten more. For the other dishes we decided on Mongolian Beef ($22), Curry Chicken ($20) and Forbidden Fried Rice ($18). The Mongolian Beef was our top choice as it was really flavorful. I came here for Saturday lunch, and there was plenty of seating. Food came out very quickly as well. We had the seafood Singapore noodles, the garlic crispy chicken, and the Peony shrimp eggrolls. The eggrolls came out hot and fresh, and were delicious once they cooled down a bit. The curry provided a nice coating to the noodles, and the garlic chicken was amazingly crunchy. My friend and I met here for dinner. She is a vegetarian and also allergic to dairy, so she was happy that they still had lots of options for her. And the waiter was for great at checking to make sure that the food she ordered was meat-free and dairy-free. She got the Mushroom Lettuce Cups, Eggplant & Green Bean, and the Firecracker Tofu. She loved it all, and even ordered more food to take home. I tried her food, and they were all tasty. I got the Five Flavored Pork Buns and the Seafood Chow Mein. The service was alright, but our dinner overall was totally chaotic. This is partially my team's fault since we were a ton of people and ordered way too much, probably overwhelming the kitchen -- and that's why I give 3 stars instead of 2. The food is not great (but then again, maybe if you enjoy authentic Chinese food, you're not the target audience), and I pretty much disliked everything except maybe the fried rice. Also, one of our orders of pork shumai came out completely uncooked (like fully raw)... so that was pretty bad. The dumplings, the crispy chicken, the soup.... it was so delicious. This was my first time and we will be back again and again. I've got to eat my way through the menu! I thought they carried very good charodneys too. Which is a plus, especially for an Asian restaurant, where I have found many don't put time into selecting good wines. I came with a large and loud party so it was fine, but I would find the ambiant noise a bit too loud if I was trying to have a romantic dinner for 2 or deep quality conversation with 3 or 4 people. The atmoshpere is fine... it's pretty... but it the acoustics in the big open restaurant carry the noise. I would put more carpets down -- or hang fabric curtains to soften the barrel-noise and create more intimacy. The waitstaff was very attentive! The girl at the front door diligently checked my vax card, which I appreciated. The dessert was remarkable! I usually go to Monsoon down the street, but we opted to try this place and I am really glad I did. we had a reservation for 14, and I know large parties can be tricky but Peony was phenomenal! The table was ready when we arrived which was great, grandma could sit down immediately. Water carafes at the table were convenient. Our server was patient since a few people arrived later than others. The food came out in such a great flow so not all at once, there was always something hot at the table. Everything was so delicious I didn't even get pictures cause it was devoured in record time. We have gone to peony multiple times and it's always been an amazing experience. The servers are always nice and caring, going out of their way to help us. We ordered the cucumber salad, which was good and tasted traditional. The xiao long bao that we ordered showed that the chef put in effort, with the dumpling covers the same thickness and the pork perfectly tender. The chow fun and Singapore noodles had great flavor, and were a major hit. We ordered both with just chicken, and it was good. Although the prices are high, the food that you get it proportionate to the prices (you get a lot of food). Overall, an amazing experience and I will come again soon. For drinks I ordered the zombie ($17) which is a strong good drink. My second drink was the 2046 ($14) which is also good. It's also a more spirit forward drink that reminds me of an old fashioned. BBQ PORK ($10) - It is thinly sliced and has good flavor with the sauce. 4/5 FIVE FLAVORED PAN FRIED PORK BUNS ($15) - The dish is so colorful and perfect for those aesthetic Instagram posts. Each pork bun is a different flavor and they were all good and go well with the dipping sauce. 4/5 TUNG PO PORK BELLY IN CLAY POT ($26) - The pork belly is so good and I like that the clay pot keeps the pork belly warm throughout the meal. It goes great with the bao and the sauce. 4/5 WHOLE CRISPY DUCK ($49) - It is boneless which is nice so you don't need to spend time taking out the bones or get surprised when you take a bite that has bone in it. They choose to serve this with tortillas rather than baos because they want to highlight the duck flavor and tortillas are thinner. It goes well with the sauce and the dried lemon takes the flavor to another level. 4.5/5 SQUID INK BAKED RICE ($20) - OMG. This was definitely my favorite dish. The flavors were great and I love the cheese on it. It was addicting and I seriously couldn't stop eating it. I would come back just for this. 5/5 Overall the dishes we got were really good. The service at Peony is always excellent. You get the feeling like you're back in China in the 1960s. The skin of the XLB is much thicker and more doughy than from Din Tai Fung. It is extremely hot but you'll need to time it correctly because it also cools down really quickly. Giving an extra bowl with the ginger and vinegar sauce is a very nice touch. But it's a track from seattle so I didn't make it back. Fast forward covid and now! It's a short walking distance from where I live. And I finally made it back. For dine in too. And I love it! Made it recently for a very long /fun/girls meal. Didn't know what I wanted but Mapo tofu with fish sounded good. So did their fire cracker chicken and fish in hot oil! Food was great minus the rice being extremely hard. Super Al dente. Literally can dent your teeth! Literally. Mapo Tofu with fish was delicious. Could use more spice but that's just me. Firecracker chicken: literally like crack! Can't stop eating. Perfect spice, peppers! I can just eat a whole plate of this. FIsh in hot oil: great too. But mapo tofu with fish wins my lunch!! I normally don't write reviews on Yelp, but I feel compelled to after eating a meal at Peony Kitchen with my friend on December 4, 2024. Normally, the food is really good and I default to my favorite dish, beef chow fun. When I tasted the meal, it had zero flavor. Just noodles and beef, which I can easily make at home. It was an expensive meal ($25) for just a bunch of inexpensive and flavorless noodles, but I grudgingly at the meal without complaint and took the leftovers home for my husband, who also said it was flavorless. But the thing that really griped me is that the server had the audacity to add an 18% gratuity on top of the bill! Since when are tips an expectation rather than a privilege for doing a good job serving a meal? Literally, all the wait staff did was bring the meal to the table and take it away. This is a presumptuous practice, as the diner should be able to determine the tip, not the staff or restaurant. At best, the tip should have been between 10-12% and up to me to decide, not the restaurant. I can understand a mandatory minimum tip for large parties, but this was just my friend and me. When the minimum wage went up in WA state, we were told that tipping was no longer necessary since workers were now getting adequately compensated Plus, there is no tip credit in WA state like in other states. Meaning, workers get the full minimum wage for their jurisdiction in addition to the tips. As a result, I will never go to Peony Kitchen again or, for that matter, frequent any restaurant that adds a mandatory tip to a so-so meal. Good luck attracting customers. read more

Looked great but way too salty for everyone. Another dish was a Szechuan chicken dish, again too salty but less do. Third dish was mixed vegetables all agreed was best dish. This place is currently rated 3.5 stars and I thought maybe the food isn't good here, but it was actually pretty good. The menu changes every few months which gives me an excuse to come back! They serve modern Chinese fusion, with little twists here and there. I have some favorites, like the whole five spiced duck, all the fried rice dishes, jelly fish, spicy whole crab, lobster pot, tung po pork belly, bang bang chicken wings, tea smoked chicken...basically half the menu. They also have really good lunch and Happy Hour deals so make sure to swing by the restaurant during those hours too. Off the HH menu, I'd recommend the dry rub pork ribs and steamed clams. You can't go wrong with most of the menu, so just take your pick and you won't regret it! Service has improved greatly, and our server, Conner who we've had before, is still the best! We also loved our bartenders, Jessica and Lilly, who recommended delicious drinks and made sure we were taken care of the entire night. I'd definitely recommend this restaurant if you want to try out Chinese/American fusion for a fancy dinner. The green beans tasted like it has gone bad, the tofu has a very distinct, non-mapo odor, made worse by overuse of onions which overpowered the mapo. Look, I am not a good cook at all (which is why I dine out a lot), but I have never made worse mapo at home than what I had here. And that's with one of those mapo packs you can buy from a supermarket. The prawns were unevenly seasoned. Some were practically unsalted, others tasted like I just straight up ingested salt. It was difficult to consume. The fried rice was just a typical fried rice, nothing more, nothing less. The tea was fine. It was tea. The Anna Wong tasted like a blander soda, with a hint of cinnamon. I had expected more of the ginger beer + apple cider flavor to be honest. The dessert was actually pretty good. But really, that's the only highlight. Overall the food I'd say is between 2 and 3 stars. Not inedible, but definitely average or below. However, given the price tag, I do have to give the restaurant a rating of 1 star.
