We were pretty hungry when we arrived at Spezzo on a bustling weekend evening. In spite of this, we…read morewere seated in only about 10 minutes. The host was pleasant and helpful. The atmosphere was lively, the decor was on the heavier darker side, which I actually prefer. Things went downhill from there though. It took over 10 minutes for someone to come by the table, and another 15 to get our menus and finally place an order. It seemed as though there were several staff on the floor, but only one was actually waiting on tables. Our server started out seemingly a bit perturbed with us, but they eased up as the evening progressed. I had a decent glass of red, and we also ardered some non-alcoholic beverages which were festive looking and tasted nice. We ordered the foccaccia appetizer. It came out just shy of burned. It was dry, bland and flat tasting, but heavily salted. I had high hopes for the the Spezzatino di Manzo, a beef stew. It may have been rich in taste at some point, but all I got from it was salt. The beef was edible but not as tender as it should have been, and what few vegetables and potatoes survived were mush or nearly pulverized. There were also quite a bit of chewy gristle. The Roasted Mushroom Risotto was unexpectedly watery and flavorless, almost soupy. The Alla Vodka Fettuccini was cooked properly, and wasn't bad, but was tomato heavy for an alla vodka. The chicken in this dish however was overcooked and dry. For dessert, we got the lemon sorbet which was perfectly fine, but it's really hard to mess up sorbet. I don't know how this place has as many stars as it does. Our experience was an expensive disappointment.

The restaurant resides in an older, well kept building in the small downtown area of the rural Town of South Deerfield. The interior of the restaurant is small, but welcoming, with an L-shaped bar for approximately (12) persons which accommodates food service, and table seating for approximately 50-60. We arrived at 5:30pm on a Friday, and by 6pm it was full; reservations are highly recommended. With regards to the food, everything was absolutely amazing! We started with the Fried Calamari (appetizer), which is my 'go to' as I both love it, and feel it is a perfect test of a kitchen's abilities, as it is a simple appetizer, but can be easily cooked poorly; this calamari was perfectly cooked (not chewy), and both lightly battered and flavored for a momentus start to our food experience. We also started with the Roasted Mushrooms (appetizer), and while I did not sample, the other members of my party thoroughly enjoyed. For the main course, I ordered the Chicken Cordon Blue (house specialty), which incorporated prosciutto and a unique creamy parmigiano sage rose sauce. The execution of the chicken preparation along with the sauce showcased the talent in the kitchen, reminding me that Gianni Figs is a chef owned restaurant. The other members of the table enjoyed Pasta Carbonara (traditional pasta), Grill to Table Scallops and Chicken Cacciatori (ribeye, chicken, & veal), all which I was informed were amazing! One minor critique as I pretend to be a legitimate food reviewer, is a consideration for the interior ambiance of the right side of the restaurant. If the right side were to more closely resemble the left side, with the addition of some wood, decor and softer lighting, it would create a warmer atmosphere for patrons. Additionally, a door or some type of partition to the kitchen entrance would also elevate the setting for those sitting adjacent to. Lastly, while I understand things will never go back to pre-2020, and the world is an altered place, with altered standards, I will note that multiple tables included patrons wearing ball caps and hooded/printed weatshirts while eating. Considering Gianni Figs food to be higher-dining quality, the dress code did not align and affects the ambiance. Food Rating: 4.5/5 Ambiance Rating: 3.75/5 Overall Rating: 4.125/5

Our server, whose name I don't remember, assured me it would not be a problem. I had the Di Cognac which should have been sweet Italian sausage tossed with flamed brandy, garlic, roasted red peppers, spinach in a creamy tomato basil sauce and shell pasta. I asked for chicken. Very good. We both took at least another dinner worth of food home. It is always cozy at Mulino's. Maybe sit on the balcony next time.

I'm being generous with three stars because I want them to succeed in this spot where Ibiza and 7…read moreStrong have failed. Our experience here recently, was however, not up to snuff. The three of us were seated an uncomfortably narrow small table. The restaurant means to sit 4 at these tables but they are really meant for two people. The folly of this size table was evident as soon as the food arrived. Homestead's menu is heavy on small plates and we ordered one starter, 5 small plates and one pasta between the three of us. The larger plate menu (meant for 2) has only four items..a chicken, a fish, a meat, a vegetarian. They were out of the fish. All of the dishes basically arrived simultaneously. There was no room on the small table for all of the dishes. Kind of ridiculous to try and maneuver. So we hurriedly finished off a couple of dishes so the server could make room for the dishes in her hand. I can't imagine if we had four people at the table and they tried to fit 8 dishes on the table. They really need to time the arrival of the dishes so that we can enjoy and leisurely eat..not rush through them to make room for the more on the server and chef's schedule. The food? The ratatouille was delicious as was the Caesar salad. The arugula salad was fresh and satisfying. The salmon crudo was small, expensive and kinda weird. The butternut cavatelli with lemon and chicken was a wee tiny portion for $17 that was gloppy and without the advertised crispy skin. The $15 octopus was one tentacle in a spicy mush mosh. The charred shisito pepper starter was undercooked and came without the advertised sea salt. No bread offered. The wine list was really nice and fairly priced. The house wine was tasty at $5.50 a glass. All in all, disappointing but promising. The small plate emphasis will cause bigger than anticipated tabs. They really have to think about the size, comfort, and utility of those narrow rustic tables. And they need to stagger the arrival of the food so that customers are not rushed through their meals with all the dishes crammed on the table at once. Some nice traditional plates of food for one person (not everyone loves the sharing schtick) priced from $18-26 would be great. Homestead has promise but right now the attitude, and narrative outweigh the product and experience.

(Apr 2026) For dinner, we had a baby-spinach salad with crushed walnuts, moist dried cranberries, crumbled gorgonzola, and sweet zingy raspberry vinaigrette. Their Mussels Fra-Diavlo were fresh tender and juicy, sauteed in garlic olive oil, with crushed red peppers and rich Pomodoro sauce. We loved their brightly-flavored chicken piccata, pan-sautéed in light fresh-tasting olive oil, with white-wine lemon-butter sauce, tasty little capers, and melt-in-your-mouth artichoke hearts. Served over creamy risotto. So good! Our server, Maybelline is the nicest best ever, with a great sense of humor. We were happy to see Dario's busy in the early evening on a Friday (Apr 2026). I can honestly say this place matches and exceeds many of the restaurants I've dined at in Napa, California. This place is a jewel and I hope it keeps on running here in downtown Fitchburg. I got the haddock special which was cooked to perfection and on a bed of spinach, tomatoes, and excellent pasta. Other items ordered at our table, included the muscles, which were excellent, two muscle options were available that night. The scallops were also very good and also served on a bed of pasta. The Caesar salad I ordered was excellent and loaded with anchovies, which I love. However, others may want to hold the anchovies, but that's just how I like it. I'd come back for the Caesar salad alone. Excellent cocktails across the bar at a reasonable price. Very good wine list again with good pricing. Perhaps the only negative thing I could say is the corkage fee was $35 which is a little bit high even for California pricing. However, overall, the pricing here is very good and fair. We were here on a Monday night so they were not busy and service was excellent. This is a local gem and I definitely would recommend and hopefully will return soon!
