My friend recommended this place to me as this is his go to brunch place. It is in my neighborhood so I decided that I had to check this place out. It was not too hard to find parking, as we parked about two blocks away. The place itself is cute but on the small side and it's a bit self-serving but they do seat you. Right away, when we walked in we notice a table empty by the door, but when we told the waiter that we had two, he had us wait until an table of two free-ed up. It was a bit odd since there was an empty table, but we figured he didn't want to waste a big table on two people. We sat down and they did not have a lot of choices, but they did have enough and their drink menu is more extensive. We went with the eggs benedict and fried chicken sandwich with a side of sweet potato fries (you do have the pay extra for the fries). For drinks, we went with a matcha latte and an ice coffee, you do have to get your own cream and sugar for the ice coffee. The eggs benedict was alright, nothing too special. The fried chicken sandwich was amazing and if there is anything to get, I highly recommend this one. The flavors are amazing and the chicken is super crispy. The sweet potato fries are also delicious and I would recommend getting it as a side. The drinks were alright nothing special. The prices were not bad, a lot cheaper compared to the Manhattan brunch places. The staff was not too friendly, it isn't really a big deal to us, but when we put down money to pay. We decided to put down a $40 when our bill was $22, and the weird part is our waitress asked us if we wanted change, which left us confused ??? This was my second time at parlay, the waitress was very friendly both times. On google it's advertised as a cafe so I assumed bringing a laptop to work would be ok. I wasn't told about the no laptop rule on my first visit, but was made aware the second time. This was kind of weird to me because it's a cafe. The pulled pork sandwich was just alright though..I didn't particularly like it much. Today, I came with my sister for early lunch. Place is nice and cozy. Not too busy on a weekday. I ordered the blueberry pancakes and my sister ordered the eggs florentine. Blueberry pancakes-delicious! There are pieces of blueberry melded into the pancakes and it was tasty. A bit thin, but forgivable. Eggs florentine-also delicious! Poached egg was cooked just right and had a great runny yolk. The whole dish had such good flavors. This place brings a refreshing unique breakfast experience to the immediate area full of Chinese bakeries. I happened to be home in Brooklyn this weekend so this was a great opportunity for us to try this place today! Yes, I grew up in Brooklyn all my life before moving to Queens! My siblings and I ventured about half a mile away from our home and got here just before it got crowded. Decor is very hippy with wooden tables, benches, chairs, and seating at the bar. We started with a regular Latte and Matcha Latte. Both cups had a heart as their latte art. They did not add any sugar so you can add some if you like. We got the Sweet Potato Fries with Sriracha Mayo. Fries came out hot and super crispy! Our siblings ordered a variety of items such as the Eggs Benedict, French Toast, and Pulled Pork Sandwich. Eggs Benedict was a traditional dish. English muffin with poached egg and Canadian bacon topped with hollandaise sauce. I did love that the sauce was not too heavy. Poached eggs are perfectly cooked for the yolk was still runny and oozing out! Eggs Royale (Poached Eggs with Smoked Salmon) and Eggs Florentine (Poached Eggs with Spinach) are both variations of the eggs benedict and great choices that are also available here! Egg dishes all come with a side of home fries! French Toast is a smaller dish for anyone who isn't that hungry. Tastes very homemade if that's what you like. Two slices of french toast with a fruit salad on the side - grapes, honeydew, strawberries, and oranges. This dish is okay. Pulled Pork Sandwich was a stunning beauty! This place is seriously the hidden gem of Sunset Park. A fancy brunch place may seem out of place in Brooklyn Chinatown, but somehow, they make themselves fit and are here to stay. There's barely anyone outside so it's funny to see a whole town in here. Today, we sat by the counter. The two female workers were accommodating, friendly, and potentially physic! There was a moment when I mentioned my sore throat to my friend, and the lady standing by must have heard or something as she miraculously came over, smiled, and refilled my water. I ordered the French Toast for myself and Sweet Potato Fries to share. For the price, the Sweet Potato fries were worth it for the portion size we got! Hot and crispy on the outside while still remaining mushy and sweet potatoey on the inside. The spicy mayo was an excellent choice of dip! Definitely, would recommend! Sugar/milk are self serve right by the counter. We got a latte & cappuccino, both came with a little foamy heart, never get bored of seeing this cute stuff! Spinach & cheese omelette, a side of bacon, banana pancakes w homefries (over fruits, I'm a carb lover!). I loved my banana pancakes - it was perfectly sweet, balanced and not overwhelmed by the bananas, plus it was cooked perfectly fluffy with crispy edges! My eating buddy enjoyed his omelette, it was well seasoned and not over powered by the cheese. My fav though was the deliciously AWESOME Home-Freaking Fries! I've been brunching around my neighborhood a lot lately. Once in awhile I decide that I'm feeling lazy and don't want to walk anywhere, so I take that opportunity to get in my car and try a new place that I wouldn't usually walk to. Last week, Parlay was that place. I was surprised to find such a cute little (emphasis on little) spot in Sunset Park's Chinatown. Back to the "little" aspect...there were only a few tables at this place. So few in fact that I don't know if I would even call it a restaurant. If you were asking me, which you probably shouldn't, I'd go with a cafe. For a "cafe," I'm happy to say that there was a nice brunch selection. I'm also happy to say that it is served all day. Who doesn't love brunch all day? No seriously, who? No one! That's who. I got a mushroom omelet with cheese and bacon (duh) which came with a side of home fries. The omelet was just alright. It was clear that the bacon and mushrooms had been thrown into the omelet after the eggs because the bacon wasn't crisp and the mushrooms were wet and soft, also telling me that they weren't fresh. Bummer! The home fries on the other hand were crispy and well seasoned. My date got a grilled cheese with avocado and a side of sweet potato fries. She really liked the crispy grilled cheese, but sadly she did not get her fries. If you've ever been to a restaurant with me and the waiter does not WRITE DOWN MY ORDER ON A PIECE OF PAPER (or an iPad, a phone, or any way to actually remember it), you will ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS hear me complain about it. You are not a robot, you are a human being who has a lot of things to remember. JUST WRITE IT DOWN! (Whew...ok I'm fine..). Actually, one more thing about that. Then I promise I'll shut up. Whenever someone forgets something on an order, 9 times out of 10, I will not remind my waiter. Because of this, everyone suffers. It is definitely a hidden gem because this place is located off the prime zone of 8th Avenue (which is good for those of you that drive - it is a headache to find parking spot) This is where you want to visit on a warm weekend afternoon without making a trip to the city. This café can accommodate around 20 to 30 people - they have a bar area where it can sit 5 or 6 people, around 5 or 6 tables right next to the windows and two small tables outdoor. Food wise - I give them a 4/5. Portions are generous and hearty. Mum's Malaysian Curry Chicken and Siracha Grilled Cheese are must. I asked and waitress and she said "it was dark meat, marinated, breaded then fried". I cook very often and this was not good/fresh chicken. I presume that MSG is also used in the breading. We had a large party of 8, and they happened to be able to accommodate us, but seating is somewhat limited. Dine outside of normal meal times to ensure you can dine in. However, they look like they do a significant amount of carry-out business, as well. This place is kid friendly. A hidden gem that stands out amidst the neighborhood. You might actually miss this place if you don't look carefully but this cafe has some foods that are hard to come across in Sunset Park. My favorite has got to be the eggs benedict, the eggs are usually runny and the home fries are perfectly soft but tasty. Runner-up would be the fried chicken sandwich. The buns are insanely jiggly and the chicken is tender. Have tried the blueberry pancakes and they were decent, though the fruits on the side were pretty fresh. Omlettes aren't really worth it and the pulled pork bun is good but also not worth it in my opinion. Haven't tried the others yet but am a regular here so any time now! Drinks are average, coffee just tastes like any other coffee. Hot chocolate is pretty good however, and would recommend the hibiscus lemonade that is only available during summer. Their service is on point too. Waitresses are very quick on their feet, taking your order and refilling your water. This cafe feels misplaced in a neighborhood of old/run-down looking restaurants and shops. The music and decor contributes to its nice atmosphere. Recently opened, the cafe offers a variety of espresso drinks and all-day brunch menu. The prices are slightly more expensive than your average "8 ave" prices but decent if you compared the prices to many coffee shops in the city. The cashiers/servers are friendly and make conversation with customers. The first time I came, I had the Mexicano omelette ($6-7). The omelette also comes with a side of home fries (potatoes). The omelette could've been saltier but I really liked the potatoes. I also had their garlic fish sauce glazed chicken wings ($9), which came in 8 pieces I believe. It was nice and crispy but I wish they had tone down on the sauce. The sauce was a bit too strong to be able to eat all 8 wings without sipping water. I wanted to try the Malaysian curry chicken with roti (Indian pancake) but unfortunately the customer who ordered before me got the last serving. It's a limited item on the menu and one of their best-sellers so it does sell out quick. The second time I came, I finally had the chance to try the curry chicken ($8.95). I've had curry chicken in other Malaysian restaurants on 8 Ave before but their curry sauces are usually pretty watered down and oily. Parlay serves a generous serving of curry chicken and potatoes. The chicken is very soft and easy to strip so there's a lot of chicken strips in the bowl. The curry sauce is very thick and creamy to dip the roti in. Personally, I wasn't a fan of the roti because it was oily and thick compared to the ones I had before but the curry chicken makes up for it. It's pretty spicy too but it's a manageable level of spice. You can also get the home fries as a separate order ($2.75), instead of just serving them as a side in their omelette or egg dishes from now on, which is a plus.
