We have been here many times pre-pandemic so I'm glad Parlay survived the pandemic and was happy to go there but disappointed in our server and unsure what prompted the unfriendly service that was noticeable. Was it annoying that we couldn't hear each other behind our masks when we placed our order and asked for clarifications? Was he upset when we asked for the food to go and expected to get containers to pack ourselves but he expected us to bring our food to him? It became more apparent when other customers came in for pick up and the server actually smiled. I have worked in service for over a decade and would never shame a customer into tipping or be rude about not getting tipped unless the customer is literally rude but even then, I know how to restrain myself. On my way out was told crudely gratuity is not included in the bill. I was able to clarify that on our $34.25 bill, my partner did in fact tip leaving $5.75 swapping out her five bill for five singles. By my standard that's a little low to be fair, and I know some people adjust based on service (which I think she did) though I always do flat 20%. When I told him she did tip and he rolled his eyes. I went back and left another five dollars now tipping over 20%. I hope the server feels satisfied with himself cause he actually didn't deserve it. I know what it's like dealing with a-holes and crappy tippers, and no- the customer is not "always right" even though there's some stupid rule about that. I tried to be friendly and am really put off by the whole exchange. Sadly we won't be returning even tho we have always had an affection for Parlay. Absolutely adore this corner brunch joint at any time of day. My boyfriend conveniently lives around the block from Parlay, hence my multiple check-ins. The service is great, music is always a hit--think 90's R&B greatest hits--and the vibe on point. Top ranked Parlay items are as follows, in no particular order: - fried chicken sandwich: stacked high with ripping hot chicken strips, seasoned to perfection with a nice drizzle of wasabi aioli - cheeseburger: add a runny egg or some bacon to offset the sweetness of the onions and the hit of black pepper on the juicy patty - sriracha jam grilled cheese: perfectly grilled Pullman loaf, oozy cheese which doesn't set into a hard lump (I was judiciously journaling at the bar while indulging in this one) - hand cut fries - bacon, egg and cheese: rivals a bodega BEC IMO Seems to be the neighborhood spot. Parlay sucks. This place not only has a confusing brand identity but their business practice has been set by someone who has ZERO experience in the food and hospitality business. It presents itself as a coffee shop cum hipster joint (they put a few vinyl records on display to make their point) but it gets even more bizarre (and off putting) when the server informed me that the place is in fact, a "restaurant ". As such, she would not seat me until my friend arrived. Ha! It would have been funny had I been able to get my latte from her, which again she would not make, until my friend arrived and we ordered food (another mandate). This was, as I was schooled by the cashier, their "business model" . Well, I waited for my friend and watched so many people like me try to figure out how the eff to get a coffee and their orders which took a long time. My friend arrived 5 minutes later. CASH ONLY! I cannot believe it took me so long to dine at Parlay! My friend and I came here around 10:30am on a Thursday. The restaurant is tiny and cozy, so it is better to come at an off-time like this to have the best experience. During our brunch, there was one other party in the restaurant, so there was no pressure to leave and service was faster. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich ($8.25) and my friend ordered the fried chicken sandwich ($8.75). Food was presented well and tasted amazing! For my sandwich, the pork was well-shredded, juicy, and the sauce they used to flavor it was so delicious. The slaw was portioned well and complemented rather than overwhelmed the pork. My friend also enjoyed her sandwich! I tried a piece and was taken by surprise by the softness and flavor of the chicken! However, I'm not the biggest fan of wasabi, so I would pass on the wasabi aioli. My friend also enjoyed the latte ($3.50) that she ordered. The fries that came with my friend's sandwich were also tasty, and made me wish mine came with them too. Even without the fries, both sandwiches were filling and portioned well for the price. Service was quick and friendly, which was easy since it wasn't busy. The food here is a steal for NY! There are places that charge $13+ for sandwiches that look as gorgeous as these. Charming cafe located just outside the busier Chinese dominated commercial 8th Avenue strip. It is currently operating with a smaller menu and reduced hours. Both before the pandemic changes and now, Parlay turns out consistently high quality food, whether taken out or enjoyed at one of their outdoor sidewalk tables. Their current menu still has the juicy burger on a fluffy bun, and a well-made bacon, egg, cheese breakfast sandwich. But consider the most unexpected dish of all, Malaysian curry chicken, with layered flavors in a complex curry, tender dark meat chicken, and perfect crisp and chewy roti. Although competition is sparse, just can't think of any Malaysian restaurant in NYC that tops it. And appropriate for a cafe, their coffee is quite delicious. Came early on a Sunday for brunch with a friend and got a table right away. It started to get busy around noon and there were a bunch of people waiting for a table. This brunch/cafe is in middle of nowhere and definitely out of place for Sunset Park, but definitely a great addition to the neighborhood. I had the pulled pork sandwich, spicy hand cut fries and the hibiscus lemonade. The pulled pork was delicious. It was flavorful, well-seasoned and perfectly paired with the toasted brioche bun. Only complaint is that the slaw was very liquidy and the pickle was extemely sour. I wish they put the slaw to the side so it didn't soak up the bun. The fries weren't bad and the hibiscus lemonade was really good. My friend had the fried chicken sandwich with fries and she enjoyed it. The sandwich was huge and they gave a lot of chicken. The eggs were not runny and when I pointed that out to them, they were surprised I wanted it runny. They are supposed to be runny! It was similar to a boiled egg - look at pictures. They made a new batch which was perfectly runny but still not a good benedict. Maybe it was the salmon? I also tried the french toast and they used regular white bread which doesn't make sense. You can't just use any type of bread to make a french toast. I loved the curry with roti. This is a true seller. The curry was perfectly creamy and flavored. If you come here, you must order this dish. If you order a drink aka coffee, they will not serve you milk. It is self serve at the counter. I ordered the matcha latte and it was not pleasant. The coffee was good though. I think this restaurant is a self serve style besides them bringing out your order because they never checked up on us or asked if we wanted refills. A really good brunch spot in Chinatown, Brooklyn. The service was fast and friendly, not to mention the food was amazing as well. There aren't many seating options available so that would be a concern if you have a large party with you. 5/5 Brunch places are basically non-existent in the Brooklyn Chinatown area and you will usually have to travel out of the neighborhood to find one. I decided to come by on a Sunday afternoon and luckily we did not have to wait. This place has very limited seating (I would guess 15 people MAX) and does not accept credit cards (cash only!), so that made it a bit inconvenient. I ordered the spinach and cheese omelette. All of the egg dishes come with a side of homestyle cajun fries, but I was in more of a long fries mood and luckily, the waitress said that i can switch for no additional charge! :) If you are interested in sweet potato fries instead, you can change it for an additional $0.75. Overall, the spinach and cheese omelette was good, but I would've really liked for the cheese to have been mozzarella. They used a less stringy cheese (I think American?), which can explain the $7.25 price. My friends ordered eggs Benedicts and burgers and I think everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal. It wasn't SPECTACULAR, but it was good. Overall, I had a decent brunch here. The food was good, although it did not blow my mind. The caramelized onions on the burger and the burger bun were surprisingly tasty. The fries were not soggy and perfect for dipping into the curry. The portions were great for the price. Let me just start by saying I want to eat Mum's Malaysian Curry everyday for the rest of my life!!! I've had many curries in my 28 years of life and this is #1 on the list. The curry is so creamy and thick PACKED with flavor (a bit of heat - would love more) The roti is so buttery and soft ( I always regret not getting extra) And the cherry on top is the crisp refreshing cucumber served on the side ( I save that for last). I went here on a Friday, had a nice cup of coffee and a tasty curry. On Saturday, I came back, walking an extra 6 blocks to get another coffee, thinking I'd support a local store. Instead they kicked me out, saying tables are reserved for people eating food. This is 3pm on a Saturday with just 3 other people in the whole shop. I had read about them kicking other people out for laptop use, but I didn't have a laptop, and was a paying customer just trying to unwind with some coffee. Very nice spot that is a little bit away from everything else. The interior is like a typical cafe style with a warm atmosphere. This is a sit down restaurant. Great place to just relax and enjoy your food. The waitress/front of the house was nice and attentive to the best of her abilities. It was basically her doing everything and also attending to the customers. I ordered some Eggs Benedict. They were simply beautiful. Perfectly poached eggs, the whites easily give way to the oozing yolk. Crisp Canadian bacon and just as crispy toasted English muffin. Came here a few Sundays ago around 2pm and waited about 20mins to be seated (party of 3). Parlay is a quaint little spot in the middle of Sunset Park. The place is set-up like a cafe style - only a few tables and stools around the bar. I read a lot of reviews about the curry chicken and really wanted to try it, but the waitress said they were all out of it....which was disappointing since it was a Sunday at 2pm, still fairly early. Instead, I ordered the Eggs Royale (basically salmon Benedict). It was good, the eggs were cooked perfectly. I was a bit bummed to discover that they do not serve mimosas or bellinis, but they do have wine. We popped a bottle of rosé which was delicious and refreshing. The best part about this place was the price. Every entree on the menu was under $15, and it didn't break the bank to get a bottle of wine. I will definitely be back! read more

Came here for the second time yesterday with group of 3. All the seats were filled and we were awkwardly standing by the door since none of the staff wanted to acknowledge us. Parlay has slowly (but surely) become a regular favorite for me and my boyfriend as it's close to my boyfriend's house. It's a hidden and trendy cafe that's tucked away in the deep end of 8th ave. It's got a nice, simple menu and it's a cute place to converse with a friend or bring your laptop and do some work (during the permitted hours of course). The spicy hand cut fries and hibiscus lemonade are my bf's fave things to order here, and I'd say my go-to order is the sriracha jam grilled cheese - I love the sweetness added from the jam! I also enjoy the sweet potato fries as they come with spicy mayo. I've read the Malaysian curry chicken is a popular dish, and the times I've gone order it, they were sold out, which can attest to its popularity! The one time I have had it though, it was pretty yummy. An hour in to dining, the waitress proceeds to come by and take away our food telling us they have an hour limit on dining. We were not informed of this prior and neither were there any signs up. Quotes from our extraordinarily rude and nonchalant waitress: "Yeah we allow you to eat but not really to eat and talk" "It's different if you are ordering a few beers and talking" So apparently you are not allowed talk if you only order food and non alcoholic drinks. Parley is a fairly new breakfast-brunch spot in the outskirts of Brooklyn Chinatown in Sunset Park. This place brings a refreshing unique breakfast experience to the immediate area full of Chinese bakeries. I happened to be home in Brooklyn this weekend so this was a great opportunity for us to try this place today! Yes, I grew up in Brooklyn all my life before moving to Queens! My siblings and I ventured about half a mile away from our home and got here just before it got crowded. Decor is very hippy with wooden tables, benches, chairs, and seating at the bar. We started with a regular Latte and Matcha Latte. Both cups had a heart as their latte art. They did not add any sugar so you can add some if you like. We got the Sweet Potato Fries with Sriracha Mayo. Fries came out hot and super crispy! Our siblings ordered a variety of items such as the Eggs Benedict, French Toast, and Pulled Pork Sandwich. Eggs Benedict was a traditional dish. English muffin with poached egg and Canadian bacon topped with hollandaise sauce. I did love that the sauce was not too heavy. Poached eggs are perfectly cooked for the yolk was still runny and oozing out! Eggs Royale (Poached Eggs with Smoked Salmon) and Eggs Florentine (Poached Eggs with Spinach) are both variations of the eggs benedict and great choices that are also available here! Egg dishes all come with a side of home fries! French Toast is a smaller dish for anyone who isn't that hungry. Tastes very homemade if that's what you like. Two slices of french toast with a fruit salad on the side - grapes, honeydew, strawberries, and oranges. This dish is okay. Pulled Pork Sandwich was a stunning beauty! A huge layer of pulled pork meat in between seasame brioche buns. I loved how flavorful the pork was and the bread was nicely charred. It was a bit messy to eat but it was really worth it!
