Came here to celebrate a friend's birthday and everyone was so wonderful from the moment I pulled up. Valet was quick and friendly. When I walked in, I was greeted by Denise and a few other hostesses who all so kindly seated us and asked us how we were doing. Once we sat down, Edward was our server and he was just so pleasant and the right amount of customer service. He made our whole dinner nice and smooth. The food was delicious. We had oysters that were divine. Ribeye that was juicy and tender. And sea bass that was seared perfectly. At the end of dinner, we went back to the bar and Victor was awesome. He made me a delicious whiskey sour with egg whites and the yummiest old fashions. We enjoyed his company and craft. In addition to this, they had hand written birthday cards! We came here for dinner on Friday night for dineLA. Service was excellent! Our waiter checked on us multiple times to see if we needed anything and to make sure our food was to our liking. I especially liked the fact that they gave us a hand written card to congratulate us. After our meal, our waiter even brought out a complimentary cupcake as well as orchids to help us celebrate our special day. A very nice touch! This is one of those places where dressing up is highly recommended. You don't want to be the only person in the restaurant sticking out like a sore thumb with your T-shirt and flip-flops. Complimentary valet parking is a plus in my book. Pasadena can be a pain when it comes to parking. So onto the food: -Lobster Crepe: This was disappointing. It was more leek than lobster. I wished the ratio was more proportionate; felt like I was eating a vegetarian dish. The flavor was also so-so. Nothing to rave about sadly. I wouldn't recommend this. -Shrimp Linguine: Quantity might not look like much but this dish was extremely filling. The lemon alfredo sauce was a surprise. And when I say alfredo sauce, don't think of it as a liquid-y sauce. It is very thick, sticks onto the linguine more like a cream. -Creme Brulee Napoleon: Beautiful presentation. Love the opposing texture, alternating between the crispy phyllo and vanilla custard. Definitely on the sweet side so order a cup of coffee to balance it out if you don't have much of a sweet tooth. Treated myself to a midweek solo lunch. Didn't realize that it was Dine LA, and that menu looked really interesting, but decided to go with the specials because they sounded so great. I did a cup of the watermelon cucumber gazpacho and it was wonderful. Just cold enough, vegetables were crisp, and the balance of silky and sweet were perfect on a hot day. For my entree,I ordered the lobster salad, which sounded amazing. My server described mango puree, lemongrass vinaigrette, wax beans and green beans, pickled onions, and of course chilled lobster. Upon receiving my salad, I immediately thought "Oh that salad looks really kind of slimy" and actually it was. The fresh mango was very ripe, sweet (but also mushy) but there was no acid or salt to counterbalance it. The pickled onions did not add enough salt or acid at all, and there was absolutely no trace of the lemon grass vinaigrette. When I ate the beans just by themselves they tasted fresh, and I'm sure they probably came from the PG's organic garden. I muddled through the salad, and finished it, but I really didn't feel that this dish was up to par, or up to the PG standards I have enjoyed before. Hostess was very welcoming and polite, This restaurant is so elegant and relaxed ambiance. Susan greeted us at our table and mentioned and described the specials of the day. My husband got the Baramundi fish with roasted yams and broccoli delicious and I had the organic greens, poached pairs, blue cheese, caramelized pecans, berries with shrimp my perfect salad, So much flavor. I've been a return diner at the Parkway for more than 25 years and it has always been excellent--excellent food, excellent service, beautiful ambiance. It's what I call a destination restaurant--a place worthy of the drive even if it's not so close by. I discovered the Parkway when I lived in Glendale in the 90s. Now, a few moves later, I'm about a half-hour farther west of Pasadena but--especially on special occasions--I still make the drive and I'm always glad when I do! If you've never been, you owe it to yourself, to discover what is unquestionably one of LA's best restaurants. Went with family and friends for my 30th birthday dinner and we had an amazing time. Even though they still have restrictions i was able to be accommodated for two tables for my party which I greatly appreciated because it had been such a struggle to celebrate at a restaurant because of the pandemic. Staff was very friendly and welcoming and the food was amazing ! We all had shared every single side they offered, they did not disappoint and we also had a variety of the steaks they offered. All steaks were flavorful and just super delicious! This restaurant is very elegant and beautifully decorated with its outdoor dinning area. This was my second time coming here, the first time was for my 3 year anniversary a couple years back and now this past week for my birthday and it definitely was just as amazing as the first. read more

It was ok. The servers are not intuitive. They bring you coffee with a teaspoon or anything to stir it with, they don't have condiments that are usually set on a table (salt, pepper and/or sweetener), no matter if it is a function room affair. Plus you have to ask twice. They have wait staff who cannot be interrupted from whatever their assigned duties. Their fries were good (almost shoestring), the burger was ok but I guess the expectation was too much for the reality. Nice touch on the real orchid after the luncheon. read more

This restaurant did not meet my expectations at all.... To start our meal we ordered two glasses of pinot noir wine... One $15 and the other one $18... So this would give you an idea of how pricey this restaurant is... Then as for appetizer I ordered the beet salad. It was one of the most bland and tasteless salads I have everhad in my life... There was no acidity in there... It had goat cheese, greens and beets... So to make it tasty, I asked for a side of vinaigratte and the server brings me balsamic vinegar instead... Ummm, there is a difference between those 2! They provide you with a complimentary bread which tasted stale.... There were different kinds in there... One was covered with cheese which I thought it was too salty... But again that is my personal opinion.... As for the main course, I was interested in the catfish dish, so I asked our waiter (Jose), how that dish is, and he mentioned that "it is one of our most popular dishes". Oh lord, when the food came out, by just looking at the dish, I got full... It was a big catfish with head and everything still there... It was not a pretty dish to look at that's for sure... And if he had told me that it is a big portion I would have got something else....The fish came with a side of rice, pickled veggies and soy sauce... My husband ordered the NY strip which was very fatty... As for the dessert, we ordered their 'chocolate bread pudding' and guess what it was in there? Raisins!!!! Yes ofcourse there were chocolate in it but it also had raisins which was not disclosed in the menu.... As you can imagine the whole dining experience was not good.. I would not recommend it to anyone... The reason that one star is enough for this place is that they at least don't charge for the valet... Wooohoo!!! read more

A smaller restaurant than I expected, it's split into four with four totally different styles. * Bar: seats 12 at the bar, old school, and about 6 tables. * Main room: white tablecloths, 2 and 4 seat tables, high vaulted ceiling with wood rafters, big round lights. * Back room: small, holds 6 tables, and available for private parties and business functions. * Covered patio: was setup for 1 large table. Nice and lovely setting, but enough for 12 peeps -- that's it. Food: 1. Bread basket ($free) - a beautiful arrangement with soft butter of 4-5 breads with one very erect cheese crisp. Talk about phallic? (4.5 stars) 2. Endive Salad ($11) - a bit bitter as expected, but delicious cheese, sliced apple and dried apricots...in a light dressing. mmmm. (4.5 stars) 3. Flatbread pizza with pears, cambozola cheese, walnuts ($12) - closer to a pizza than flatbread, but a med-large 6 slices. Nice, and very good crust and cheese. (4.5 stars) 4. Kobe Burger w/Sweet Potato Fries ($21) - Absolutely fab. The meat was finely ground, maybe in-house, and a very shiny and large bun. I could only eat half. Great experience during Dine LA Restaurant Week January 2016. We chose this restaurant because their menu showcased a lot of unique eats; that alone was worth the trip! This meal did not disappoint! Here is what we got: 1) Complimentary bread basket - This was amazing! It also wasn't so overwhelming that it filled us up but we couldn't help but try everything. There was a lot of different things available that you could smear the butter on. There were cheese crisps (big triangle one), bread sticks, wheat bread, raisin (or cranberry?) bread, and cornbread madeleines. I should have asked for a refill! 2) 1/2 Dozen Oysters on the Half Shell - The oysters were so fresh and had three different sauces to choose from (I believe they were a cocktail sauce, horseradish, and mignonette sauce - shallots in vinegar) to put before you slurped up the little sucker 3) Grilled Spring Lamb Lollipops - These were juicy, and the sweet fig relish made it sweet! 4) Grilled Filet Mignon - The filet mignon has got to be the best one I have ever had in my life! Every bit was so juicy, and very easy to cut, with no chewy fat to deter you from enjoying it. 5) Creme Brulee Napoleon - The creme brulee was sandwiched in between the phyllo layers, and it was fun dipping each bit into the caramel around it. 6) Butterscotch and Chocolate Brownie Trifle - From afar, it looked like a mousse dessert, but each spoonful was a surprise! I enjoyed the brownie at the bottom and the rich butterscotch pudding throughout! I called around the better restaurants in Pasadena to see if they would be open for lunch the day after Christmas. My first choice, Maison Akira, which has excellent French cuisine accented with Japanese touches by Chef Akira who trained under the 3 etoile Guide Michelin chef, Joel Robuchon, was not open for lunch that day, so I called Parkway to find they were open for business. Parkway showed initiative. As we entered the foyer, we noticed that besides the Royce, the Parkway Grill may be the most well appointed dining room in all of Pasadena. AKA & Parkway Grill have similar interior touches such as dark wood paneling, huge floral display as the center piece, a clubby feel with upholstered seats, but the dining space at Parkway in one-upsmanship seems more like a bucolic, country manor, owned by some leisurely landed gentry. The number of help swarming around also adds to the effect of a grand manor. The servers coordinate either white or black napkins depending on the colors worn by the guest so as not to leave lint that is noticeable. Since this was still the winter holiday season, the foyer was graced by an old fashioned decorated evergreen with Santa Claus stockings, garlands, multicolored ornamental glass balls, silver star & gold star crowning the top. Lighted & decorated garlands of evergreen also were festooned along the rafters above while the mantel was graced with a festive wreath. I was pleasantly surprised that they do a rather lively bar business for lunch so that the 3 martini lunch is not as endangered as the whooping crane or the pupfish of Death Valley. Part of the reason for such popularity is professional & artisanal by doing such things as having bottles of liquor infusions such as Jalapeno Spiked Tequila, Dried Cherry Brandy, Barrel aged Whiskey or Bourbon for Manhattans & Old Fashions. Nice basket of dark whole grain dense bread w/ raisins & lightly toasted; corn bread shaped in the form of Madeleines; crisp, crunchy cheese flavoured lavash-like flatbread & grissini/breadsticks. Only the baguette slices were pedestrian. Having had the exemplary Fried Whole Catfish at Shiro in So. Pasadena where the frying was perfect with the meat still soft & a bit creamy with the skin being light & crisp tasting of fresh, sweet, light oil. The sides of the catfish were scored to insert thin slices of fresh ginger which when fried impart a slight spicy, "hot", aromatic medicinal flavor to ameliorate any signs of "muddiness" that used to be present in catfish caught in muddy waters. Seeing whole fried catfish on the Parkway menu brought pleasant memories of a dish that would be too difficult to duplicate at home. The Parkway version of the Fried Whole Catfish was initially acceptable although it may have been fried a bit too long so that the meat was no longer as supple & creamy . The soy sauce, Japanese rice vinegar, citrus based Ponzu sauce was well executed w/ toasted white sesame seeds & fresh cilantro sprigs to add into the sauce. The accompanying long grain rice with a bit of vinegared slices of carrot, cucumber on top made the rice a bit sour which detracted from the 'sweetness' of the jasmine-like rice. I paired the catfish with their Viognier/Chenin Blanc blend Barrel 27 "High on the Hog", Central Coast 2011 which was fragrant with tropical fruit & flowers, honey, lightly acidic which cleansed the palate. We shared the Chocolate Bread Pudding "studded w/ bitter sweet chocolate & crunchy coco nibs, espresso ice cream, chocolate sauce". Glad to have shared this dessert since the flavours were so rich that it sated us immediately. Even sharing one dessert, the waiter set the table with a full complement of eating utensils that included, extra dishes, fork & spoon. The service here tends to be thoughtful & courteous. The bad: About 5 hours after ingesting the whole catfish, I had a really bad case of heart burn & indigestion, & it was my only meal for the day. The catfish had a faintly evident "old oil" flavour, but not bad enough, I felt, to send it back to the kitchen. My theory is that the oil that the catfish was fried in was used many times & for a relatively long period of time for it to turn which may have been the cause for my digestive distress. This seemed to be a case of "penny wise, pound foolish". Sometimes cutting corners creates a very undesirable effect. I was initially aiming for a 4 Yelp star review, but this culinary hiccup lowers it one star. read more

Walked in on a busy Saturday night for my Birthday and appreciated the nice ambiance and jazz music playing. My girlfriend took me here and I was excited because I heard good things about this place. The bread basket was pretty good- a variety of bread types (my favorite being the flat, cheese bread). I highly judge by the free bread and they did a good job! We got a dozen oysters to start with, which unfortunately was very average and on the smaller side. The main dishes were strong- I got their lamb chops with blueberry compote (very good for lamb lovers!!!), while the Catfish with ponzu sauce was also very good (and very large!). We finished the meal with their chocolate lava cake, which is perfect if you like the more dark chocolate decadent type of cakes. For my birthday they did give me a cupcake and candle, which although simple, had a really nice flavor and better than most of those fancy cupcake stores. Overall a great evening with great food. I think the only thing preventing the 5 star review was their average service (especially for fine dining and on a special occasion) and the lackluster appetizer. Sitting in the bar at Parkway is our favorite night out in Pasadena and always our first choice when we get a chance for a night out away from the kids- the staff always make you feel special and service is impeccable. However on this last trip, we were shocked to learn that the bar staff of many years have left for different reasons - We quickly realized that it was the staff and their service that made the experience so memorable and not necessarily the food or the wine. I am aware it would be very difficult to replace staff so experienced, but one would think a place of this caliber could certainly do better than the gentleman who needed to look at a recipe for every drink he made that evening and could not stop talking about his film aspirations. read more

This was my first and quite possibly last time dining here. The ambiance and architecture had a very pretty rustic church feel to it, so I was excited to check this place out. The menu selection was very limited, but we decided on the crab cakes for an appetizer. Unfortunately, they were mushy and tasteless. Almost hard to get down, but we were hungry! We ordered a bottle of Pinot Grigio which wasn't as cold as it should've been. By the last glass it was finally chilled properly. We were not told what the specials were. We ordered the rack of lamb and filet mignon. The lamb came with 2 fatty chops covered with a cold, soggy green vegetable atop something like black beans. It was burned on the outside and cold inside. It was so dark, I was starting to feel it was intentional to cover up something. My husband's filet was cold and not cooked as ordered. It came with the same soggy green vegetable atop. So weird and unappealing. The bread basket was ornate, but I only recommend if you like a super salty surprise! After looking at the photos of other bread baskets on reviews, it appears we didn't actually get the bread that the butter could've actually gotten used on. It looks like a fruit nut bread. I probably would've tried that had we received it. Then, since we were still hungry, we ordered the creme brûlée. It came as a smore!!! Slipped all over the plate. Couldn't get it on a spoon or fork without difficulties. What is this???smh. To summarize, eat before you go. You will not get full here by any means of the imagination. I came here for holiday work lunch. We received a private room (15 of us) and we had a pre set menu. This time we received mixed greens (probably because lettuce is contaminated according to the cdc), a choice of entree, and a lava cake with ice cream. The mixed greens was okay, nothing out of the ordinary. I ordered the wagyu burger medium rare, which I thought was really good! I loved that dish. Lastly the lava cake, which didn't melt like lava.. was ok. Very rich and the taste was there. I mostly ate the ice cream and the non lava parts of the cake. read more

Nice location, good service, and some interesting food options. I had the Pan Roasted Scottish Salmon and the Lexington 5 to drink. There was something I didn't like about the drink, I think it was the amount of bitters so I would try something else if I returned. I got the salmon because I was intrigued by the bacon and the mushroom ragout. The portions were good but the green beans, bacon, mushrooms needed something more, maybe some sauce.
