I placed an order through their app, which included several items--among them, two Mediterranean Veggie Sandwiches for my vegetarian friends. The estimated pickup time was 15 minutes. I arrived punctually, only to be told the order wasn't ready and that I'd need to wait another 30 minutes. After a total wait of 45 minutes, I finally received the order. Upon returning to the hotel--a 15 to 20-minute drive--I discovered that the veggie sandwiches were missing. I informed the front desk, but there was no apology offered. After another 30-minute wait, I was handed the sandwiches in two separate packets without even a bag. Though the portions seemed small, I accepted them and returned to the hotel--only to find they had given me turkey sandwiches instead. The bad experience started from the beginning. I tried to use the self order kiosk and by the time I gave up I was ready to beat it with a hammer. I entered my wife's order and wanted to order mine but the only option given was to checkout. So ordered at the counter; the smokehouse chicken sandwich and chowder. The chowder was cold but I didn't return it because it also tasted bad, so I was not going to eat it hot or cold. The sandwich confirmed why they are called Panera Bread and not Panera meat. We were not impressed with the food this evening. We ordered soups and the new quinoa and lentil bowls. The broccoli & cheddar and chicken noodle soups were okay. I ordered the bowl with eggs. The serving seemed small and did not look like the ad at the cashier station--came with only one egg. The hard boiled egg was chewy. Let me start by saying normally I thoroughly enjoy my experiences at Panera Bread. However, I just had one of the worst dining experiences of my life at the Panera Bread in Blacksburg. I used the self checkout kiosk to place my order, a Mac and cheese bread bowl and a turkey sandwich. When my pager buzzed, I was surprised to walk up to the counter to see a regular bowl of Mac and cheese next to my sandwich. I initially thought I had made a mistake when ordering, so I sat back down and inspected the receipt, which in actuality showed I had in fact ordered the bread bowl. When I returned to the counter to ask about the mistake, I was very rudely informed that they could not take back my order and I "could have a bread bowl if I really want", at which point the person physically ripped the top off of a bread bowl and handed it to me. This rather shocked me, I as had nowhere to put the bowl since I had my whole tray of food there still. I ended up putting the bread bowl on top of the bowl of Mac and cheese I had and walk back to my seat, all while at least 4 employees were standing there watching me fumble. To top it all off, when I finally finished the Mac and cheese and went to eat my sandwich, I took one bite of the bready beast only to realize it had no turkey on it, only cheese and arugula. Also, the slices of bread were horrendous. The only way to understand is to see the picture attached. To the credit of one of the staff members, she was very helpful in that she offered to get me an extra plate for my second bowl and also offered to make me a new sandwich since the first one was completely botched. What you'd expect from a Panera Bread. The selection is standard-- they're not missing anything that I'd want, but I've seen Panera Bread locations with more items before. The space isn't huge, but it's not small and I've never had trouble finding a seat before. The location is solid. This Panera is located in a quaint little "strip mall" near the Panda Express and Kroger (decently close to the Virginia Tech campus; walkable if you want it to be). Everything about this Panera is average. Nothing about the food, service, or building has ever stood out to me, but I have not been disappointed before either. I have gotten food delivered from here a few times and they have never messed up the orders (although they aren't always timely). If you're in the mood for some Panera, you will not be disappointed, but don't look to be blown away. read more

Mixed thoughts about this place. While sometimes they can get everything right they also tend to fall back a lot and mess orders up. I would say avoid lunch hour if at all possible they tend to get super slow. I get it will be busy but sometimes it is absurdly slow. If you go before dinner time, the food is great -fresh and fast. It's one of the few places in town where you can get decent bread.Normally, I get the "pick two", which is half a sandwich with soup or salad. I ordered half the toasted Caprese with soup, but then was told that "pick two"was not available for the toasted baguette sandwiches. What? Why? So I had to order the very large toasted Caprese, and pay another five bucks for the soup. The sandwich was outstanding, but I really didn't need to eat the entire thing (although I did!) Panera Bread is a chain. I'm from the West Coast, so I didn't realize this at first. It's not crazy cheap, but the prices are certainly not ridiculous either. All of the franchises are clean in appearance and modern. They have free Wi-Fi at all of their locations. The sandwich/soup shop also makes their own baked goods. Most people show up and order their sandwiches/soups for lunch type eats, but their bread/bagel/dessert selection for take-out is very good as well. The lunches for under $5 are not generally worthwhile. You can get a very tasty variety for under $7, however. If you are okay with a little ridiculousness in price, try the teas. This location is near VA Tech and often is busy. It is so common now to come to a Panera and have nothing but people with coffee cups & open laptops working. This was the worst experience of my life in a Panera!!!! We came in at 3:00pm after driving since 8am. This is our second food stop for the day the. We walk in and normally Panera's have those iPad kioskis where you can order. This one did not. So we get in line. There's only one cashier, no biggie it's not a lot of people there. The cashier took 10 minutes to take the person in front of us's order. Then she walked away from the register to do god knows what comes back, takes My sister's order. My sister gives her the exact amount of money in cash and you would've thought she paid her in all pennies. I ordered a bread bowl and a grilled cheese. No white bread for the grilled cheese and the cashier never put the bread bowl on my receipt, so I never got it. The drive-thru was a mess. For a place that sells bagels, they were out of cream cheese. They sliced the bagels incorrectly and didn't know to tie the bag. I was on the way home from a doctor's appt. and wanted something different for breakfast. All of the bagels fell out of the bag when I came into my home. I have never seen bagels sliced so poorly as these were. I tried to call and speak to the manager about their service and was told he was too busy to come to the phone since the dinner line was out the door and waiting in line. Panera is probably one of the worst restaurant in Blacksburg. It's certainly overpriced and the food they serve is nowhere close to fresh. All my friends who worked for Panera never goes there because they know they are getting ripped off. Despite their overpriced and lifeless food, this location is clean and well-managed. However, they mess up your order more than they should. It got quite frustrating that I just stopped going here for a quick bite. Panera also holds exclusive contract with the University Mall to prevent other bakeries/cafés from establishing. We come to Panera every week and typically always have a great experience with Nadine. She is always super friendly and very helpful. Our visit this morning was a little different as we were helped by the General Manager. You would assume this would be a great experience, but it wasn't. He was quick to interrupt while we were ordering and when my wife asked for her bagel lightly toasted he commented that they only have one speed. She's been ordering her bagel like this for years.
