Before getting on the road, we decided to stop here for breakfast to avoid having to stop again halfway. With two kids in tow, we were worried there would be a wait, but thanks to summer break, we were seated quickly and all of the staff were super friendly and attentive. Holy moly, the eggs. I have no idea what magic they put into them (maybe butter?), but they were sooo flavorful! My kids (who are moderately picky, especially with their scrambled eggs) scarfed them down and asked me for a few bites of my omelette. The kids cleaned their plates (pancakes, egg, bacon) and so did my husband and I! I got a simple meat & cheese omelette (w sausage) and expected a pretty standard omelette - but those eggs, man. Those eggs! Hubs got western omelette with ham, and same. Go get Joe's eggs!! You won't regret it. Added bonus points for a deliciously fluffy biscuit and hot, yummy coffee! read more

We came in on the morning of 11/16 after we checked out of Main St Inn. Our plan was to grab a late breakfast, do a little shopping, tour Blacksburg to witness how much it's changed, then attend the basketball game. Joe's was a nice start to the day as they provide good food and good service within a tiny, but capable venue. Joe's is located near the Main St-College Ave intersection, next door to Hokie Hair (mind you, College Ave is no longer open to traffic, it's now a huge sidewalk). They are small and, since all the buildings along this portion of Main St are older, its interior is dark and dated. A makeover could be in order, but its old school look and feel lends itself to the friendly small town vibe I've become accustomed to in Blacksburg. This diner was nearly full, so we sat at the bar. There were three servers on the floor - all students. All three were friendly, helpful and loquacious (we talked about college in general, how to take advantage of a college's resources, and even discussed desired future outcomes of their educations - plenty of interesting topics for a chill Sunday morning). Neal had the t-bone steak and eggs, while I ordered a dish known as Joetaters (diced potatoes, cheddar jack, eggs, onions, peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms; and a choice of either bacon, ham, country ham, or sausage). Joetaters also came with a choice of white or wheat toast (or you can choose a biscuit for an extra $1.50). I chose wheat toast, and the entree was excellent. Neal ate his entire meal, so it's safe to say we enjoyed our food. Joe's is an excellent diner with awesome food and service. I can't wait to dine there again when I return. Thank you, Joe's Diner! HORRIBLE customer service. Rude ass waiter literally screamed at us in front of the entire restaurant. I had to walk outside to grab my parents and she gave away our table and screamed at us for not all being there when we were literally all there just waiting outside because there wasn't enough space to stand inside. Then when we went inside she proceeded to scream WHERES YOUR FOURTH, when he was standing right there with us. She said "im not seating you". Worst service ever never going back. She was the hostess and she had brownish black hair. I don't recommend this place and I've been going here for years. I saw so many reviews like this and now I know why. read more

It was really quiet on a Friday morning, but I still had a good experience. Our server was nice and we got our food quickly. I ended up getting a breakfast burrito, which was good. There was something in it that was sweet- not a fan of that, but a tasty burrito! Good breakfast spot! read more

Terrible service by worker after there was hair found in the food. We were eating then found hair in the food and the manager asked why was it eaten as if we noticed the grey hair in the food. Proceeded to get mad at the 7 of us in the diner and took pictures when we complained to her. read more

Cute place to eat at downtown. They have your every day breakfast choices. Solid place, will not exceed your expectations but will not disappoint. Food: The Big Joe. Sizable amount of food for the price you pay, completely worth it as it fills you up. Service: Very friendly and very fast. Smaller interior so may feel a bit cramped at times. Ambiance: Diner feel, will be crowded during peak times but moves fast. read more

They have a limited menu along with limited hours for summer! But the service is top noch, food is delicious, and the decor leaves no one at a loss for conversation topics. read more

We had breakfast here when we were in town for a wedding. It was recommended as a great place for breakfast. Wait staff was prompt and courteous. Coffee was hot and delicious. Hubby got his usual breakfast of sides and I got a veggie omelette. Oops no veggies in the veggie omelette! I still ate and prayed that the huge amount of cheese that was in it didn't ruin my day! We would eat there again if we are ever back this way, but give me my veggies in my omelette next time! read more

The service was terrible, and the food was average. Nice diner setting with old building nuance but overall, this was a poor experience. Our group ordered from the breakfast and lunch menu with disappointing results in both categories. There are a variety of restaurants in the downtown area where we had a much better experience. Don't waste your time waiting for a meal at this place. read more

Got seated right away then after a significant wait the same waitress came back and asked if anyone had helped us. Maybe the stamp on her hand from the bars last night was the problem? My chicken sandwich and my wife's grilled cheese looked like someone stepped on them they were so thin. They were out of fries so I had to get tater tots which were not impressive with low budget ketchup they offer. Won't be back. read more

Clearly we ordered the wrong things. There for lunch. Ordered a grilled cheese sandwich which was smashed to the depth of a piece of notebook paper. Also the grilled chicken sandwich was basically a small chicken tender on a soggy hamburger bun. Maybe they get breakfast right? read more

Great breakfast spot! Service is on it from the start and really impressive! Good quality food and reasonable prices. Classic diner setup and small so it can get crowded. read more

Came for breakfast on a Sunday. Was told there would be a 10-15min wait, but we were seated within 5min. The restaurant doesn't have too much seating, but they work quickly, We got the Joe's breakfast (scrambled eggs, biscuit, hashbrowns and sausage) and it was delicious. Good portion size and the prices are beyond reasonable. Service was fantastic, four different waitresses came by over the course of breakfast to check on us and the waitress that took our order was great, super friendly and knowledgeable. read more

Don't waste your time and money here. Almost everything my girlfriend and I ordered here was horrible. Eggs were severely undercooked, almost inedible. Sausage was rubbery and cold and the Waffle was incredibly small and dry. The orange juice was also watered down. How do you mess up orange juice? read more

A classic dive diner with classic diner food - EXCELLENT breakfast and super fun and friendly service. We were in a back room on a busy Sunday morning - table of four. We all got something different... "Joe's Breakfast", biscuits and gravy, french toast, eggs over easy and over hard, sausage, hash browns, coffee and OJ. Everything was spot-on. Eggs were prepared perfectly. Hash browns were shredded thin and nice and crispy. Sausage patties had very nice texture and seasoning. Coffee was good too! Super reasonably priced, a great stop in. Will try them for lunch next time! read more

Joe's diner was on my list since it's relatively popular and you could easily tell when you see people lined up to the door waiting for a seat, it was packed. Mediocre breakfast food and very nice servers. Didn't really enjoy the food and probably wouldn't come back, but I had to try it. Definitely a famous stop around Blacksburg, resembles Waffle House. read more

Extremely affordable diner that will definitely help your hunger. The food isn't outrageously delicious, but it definitely gets the job done. It gets pretty busy during breakfast and lunch. I ordered an egg and cheese on wheat with a side of hash browns. The food is exactly what it sounds like. Everything on the menu is affordable too. The service is also really great. Everyone is super friendly and they get to you pretty quickly. The egg and cheese was pretty standard. The hash browns too. Everything was cooked well and I enjoyed every bit of it. read more

Great service and good food. A great local diner that serves classic food. Expect a wait time for breakfast on weekends.

I just had the worst pancakes ever here. This place is a pure dive. The seats were duct taped... but back to the pancakes, or flapjacks as the mini calls them. I ordered the blueberry. They came out in record time! They were smoking hot... I mean steaming. The blueberries were only present on the top. They were out of a can and cold!! Blueberry can liquid had saturated the top pancake. It was not appealing. The stack of 3 pancakes were all rubbery. None were buttery. None felt as if the had been on a griddle! These pancakes seemed to have been pre-cooked and heated in a microwave. I could not eat them. The young server asked if the food tasted okay... I told her I did not like them, and asked if they had just been cooked or made a day before. She said just cooked. I told her I just wanted my check. She offered no other food in replacement of any discount or anything! I even had water as a beverage and was eating solo... This place was very had to locate, I man only in town for work and not familiar with campus. Parking was a pain also. Do not recommend. read more

Generally in the morning I always crave a bagel, but this time I wanted a diner style breakfast, so I decided to stop by Joe's Diner. I went on a very rainy day, and to my surprise there was still a line! The line died down quickly and after about 15 minutes I had a table. After looking at the menu I was set on getting big joe's breakfast with a side of biscuits and gravy and strawberry milk. The food came out pretty fast and I was ready to dive in! Starting off the strawberry milk was amazing. It had real strawberries in it! The breakfast itself was as you would expect from any diner. My favorite was the biscuits and gravy since the gravy was well seasoned and the biscuits did its job of soaking up the gravy! Overall, if your in town and want a great diner style breakfast I suggest you stop by! read more

I was not impressed. The portions are small, I was not expecting 1 piece of toast to sop up the yolk from my two eggs. Would it really break the restaurant to give customers two pieces of toast instead of one? Also, the waitress leaves much to be desired. I don't think she smiled once when taking my order or giving me my food. Maybe I need to take into account that it was the Monday after Superbowl and this was an off day for her? Wouldn't necessarily recommend this place based on my experience, just an average diner with small portions. read more

I truly cannot comprehend the positive reviews of this place. The waffles my kid got seemed like Eggos, the biscuits were dried out, the coffee was weak, and everything else was completely average. We were excited to try it based on rave reviews from friends and the fact that it's always packed, but, as with most restaurants in Blacksburg, we were disappointed. Save your money and cook breakfast at home. read more

This place is great except they close an hour before the time on their door says they do (unprofessional). They recently expanded their menu which is great and their prices only went up a little bit. The perks of eating here are that the food is incredibly cheap, the wait staff is a nice group, and they're very fast. Even with a long line, they move people through in here at a reasonable pace. It may not be the best breakfast in the world but it's the best in Blacksburg. read more

Love wanted to stop here for breakfast before our Va Tech tour and didn't get up In time. Barely made it for lunch. BEWARE: Yelp says this gem closes at 8 pm! She patiently waited on us (party of 4) and made sure our cups were filled! The food and service was hot, amazing and so worth the stop. read more

Great atmosphere, even better breakfast. Friendly and accommodating staff. Very affordable and an abundance of good eats.

If you've ever imagined the classic college town diner filled with the local university's gear (Virginia Tech, Go Hokies), laminated menu, and some delicious, no frills food, you're probably picturing Joe's Diner. I'm actually a big fan of good, local diners, because people always underestimate how good the food at a diner can be. Location: facing onto the Main Street of Blacksburg, Virginia, this diner is a local staple. The layout is pretty classic diner: not very wide but fairly deep with counter seating on the left, walking aisle at center, and booths to the right with a few additional tables at the rear. It's not a big place, but it's certainly good for smaller groups, maybe four or less; larger groups can be accommodated by moving tables around at the back, but if it's busy, that would likely require a wait. Parking: there's limited paid parking spots on the adjacent side streets, both metered on street parking as well as a few surface lots, including one directly at the rear of the building. Food & Drink: the menu has pretty classic diner options, such as burgers, sandwiches, and all day breakfast. It was before noon (although who am I kidding? It's never a bad time for good breakfast), so I ordered the Carolina Breakfast ($8.99)--which featured 2 eggs, pulled pork BBQ (two sauce options, regular or moonshine--went for the moonshine and was not disappointed), grits or hashbrowns (opted for the hashbrowns which were solid), and white or wheat toast. I don't know what it is, but there's something so wonderful about white toast slathered in butter at a diner. Everything was simple and delicious. The BBQ actually exceeded my expectations the most, as I was not expecting it to be as good as it was given that we were at a diner, but again, one should never underestimate a good diner. I also partook in a side order of pancakes ($3.49). Now, I can be pretty picky about pancakes, because I almost like them on polar opposites. Either they want to be (1) hefty, buttery, golden brown in color, slightly crisp edges but a moist inside or (2) absolutely the lightest, fluffiest, most delicate things on the plate. The pancakes at Joe's are definitely the latter. Light color, fluffy, delicate, and dusted with powdered sugar. They were great. Service: friendly, quick, patient. Never had an empty coffee or water cup. We also benefitted from a few menu recommendations upon asking. Definitely will be back here the next time I'm in Blacksburg with a hankering for a hearty, no frills diner breakfast! read more

Throughout my undergraduate years of studying at Virginia Tech, Joe's Diner is probably the place I've grabbed a bite from the most because brunch is my favorite meal of the day; I even make sure to stop by when I come back to visit. Every time I come here, you'll see the same workers running the stand with vintage Virginia Tech displays around the diner and that's how you know it's a true local spot that's been around for a while. This place is affordable and delicious all while selling classic breakfast dishes from eggs to biscuits and gravy. My go-to order is the Joe's breakfast with sunny-side up eggs, sausage, hashbrowns, and a biscuit, so I can put it all together and make a scrumptious breakfast sandwich (my pro tip). If you have the stomach for it, elevate my order to a big Joe's breakfast and get the additional French toast. It is by far one of the best French toast I've had! read more
