We came in on the morning of 11/16 after we checked out of Main St Inn. Our plan was to grab a late breakfast, do a little shopping, tour Blacksburg to witness how much it's changed, then attend the basketball game. Joe's was a nice start to the day as they provide good food and good service within a tiny, but capable venue. Joe's is located near the Main St-College Ave intersection, next door to Hokie Hair (mind you, College Ave is no longer open to traffic, it's now a huge sidewalk). They are small and, since all the buildings along this portion of Main St are older, its interior is dark and dated. A makeover could be in order, but its old school look and feel lends itself to the friendly small town vibe I've become accustomed to in Blacksburg. This diner was nearly full, so we sat at the bar. There were three servers on the floor - all students. All three were friendly, helpful and loquacious (we talked about college in general, how to take advantage of a college's resources, and even discussed desired future outcomes of their educations - plenty of interesting topics for a chill Sunday morning). Neal had the t-bone steak and eggs, while I ordered a dish known as Joetaters (diced potatoes, cheddar jack, eggs, onions, peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms; and a choice of either bacon, ham, country ham, or sausage). Joetaters also came with a choice of white or wheat toast (or you can choose a biscuit for an extra $1.50). I chose wheat toast, and the entree was excellent. We had breakfast here when we were in town for a wedding. It was recommended as a great place for breakfast. Wait staff was prompt and courteous. Coffee was hot and delicious. Came for breakfast on a Sunday. Was told there would be a 10-15min wait, but we were seated within 5min. The restaurant doesn't have too much seating, but they work quickly, We got the Joe's breakfast (scrambled eggs, biscuit, hashbrowns and sausage) and it was delicious. We all got something different... "Joe's Breakfast", biscuits and gravy, french toast, eggs over easy and over hard, sausage, hash browns, coffee and OJ. Everything was spot-on. I just had the worst pancakes ever here. This place is a pure dive. The seats were duct taped... but back to the pancakes, or flapjacks as the mini calls them. I ordered the blueberry. They came out in record time! They were smoking hot... I mean steaming. The blueberries were only present on the top. They were out of a can and cold!! Blueberry can liquid had saturated the top pancake. It was not appealing. The stack of 3 pancakes were all rubbery. None were buttery. None felt as if the had been on a griddle! These pancakes seemed to have been pre-cooked and heated in a microwave. I could not eat them. The young server asked if the food tasted okay... I told her I did not like them, and asked if they had just been cooked or made a day before. She said just cooked. I told her I just wanted my check. She offered no other food in replacement of any discount or anything! I even had water as a beverage and was eating solo... Before getting on the road, we decided to stop here for breakfast to avoid having to stop again halfway. With two kids in tow, we were worried there would be a wait, but thanks to summer break, we were seated quickly and all of the staff were super friendly and attentive. Holy moly, the eggs. I have no idea what magic they put into them (maybe butter?), but they were sooo flavorful! My kids (who are moderately picky, especially with their scrambled eggs) scarfed them down and asked me for a few bites of my omelette. The kids cleaned their plates (pancakes, egg, bacon) and so did my husband and I! I got a simple meat & cheese omelette (w sausage) and expected a pretty standard omelette - but those eggs, man. Generally in the morning I always crave a bagel, but this time I wanted a diner style breakfast, so I decided to stop by Joe's Diner. I went on a very rainy day, and to my surprise there was still a line! The line died down quickly and after about 15 minutes I had a table. After looking at the menu I was set on getting big joe's breakfast with a side of biscuits and gravy and strawberry milk. The food came out pretty fast and I was ready to dive in! Starting off the strawberry milk was amazing. It had real strawberries in it! The breakfast itself was as you would expect from any diner. My favorite was the biscuits and gravy since the gravy was well seasoned and the biscuits did its job of soaking up the gravy! I was not impressed. The portions are small, I was not expecting 1 piece of toast to sop up the yolk from my two eggs. Would it really break the restaurant to give customers two pieces of toast instead of one? Also, the waitress leaves much to be desired. The perks of eating here are that the food is incredibly cheap, the wait staff is a nice group, and they're very fast. Even with a long line, they move people through in here at a reasonable pace. If you've ever imagined the classic college town diner filled with the local university's gear (Virginia Tech, Go Hokies), laminated menu, and some delicious, no frills food, you're probably picturing Joe's Diner. I'm actually a big fan of good, local diners, because people always underestimate how good the food at a diner can be. Location: facing onto the Main Street of Blacksburg, Virginia, this diner is a local staple. The layout is pretty classic diner: not very wide but fairly deep with counter seating on the left, walking aisle at center, and booths to the right with a few additional tables at the rear. It's not a big place, but it's certainly good for smaller groups, maybe four or less; larger groups can be accommodated by moving tables around at the back, but if it's busy, that would likely require a wait. Parking: there's limited paid parking spots on the adjacent side streets, both metered on street parking as well as a few surface lots, including one directly at the rear of the building. Food & Drink: the menu has pretty classic diner options, such as burgers, sandwiches, and all day breakfast. It was before noon (although who am I kidding? It's never a bad time for good breakfast), so I ordered the Carolina Breakfast ($8.99)--which featured 2 eggs, pulled pork BBQ (two sauce options, regular or moonshine--went for the moonshine and was not disappointed), grits or hashbrowns (opted for the hashbrowns which were solid), and white or wheat toast. I don't know what it is, but there's something so wonderful about white toast slathered in butter at a diner. Everything was simple and delicious. The BBQ actually exceeded my expectations the most, as I was not expecting it to be as good as it was given that we were at a diner, but again, one should never underestimate a good diner. I also partook in a side order of pancakes ($3.49). Now, I can be pretty picky about pancakes, because I almost like them on polar opposites. Either they want to be (1) hefty, buttery, golden brown in color, slightly crisp edges but a moist inside or (2) absolutely the lightest, fluffiest, most delicate things on the plate. The pancakes at Joe's are definitely the latter. Light color, fluffy, delicate, and dusted with powdered sugar. They were great. Service: friendly, quick, patient. Never had an empty coffee or water cup. We also benefitted from a few menu recommendations upon asking. Definitely will be back here the next time I'm in Blacksburg with a hankering for a hearty, no frills diner breakfast! read more

Blacksburg and Christiansburg don't have a wide selection of places to go for breakfast unfortunately. On the weekends after football games there is normally a line out the door of Joe's, so we were happy to be seated right away on the weekend of Thanksgiving break when the students were away! Waitresses were very friendly and attentive. Food is diner-style - very good and affordable. Carolina breakfast is pretty good, which features barbecue (albeit it isn't exactly Carolina style.)
