They offer a nationally acclaimed menu that's been featured on NPR, Southern Living Magazine and even the ACC Network. They offer their own parking lot in the rear A huge rarity in a college area. It was clean and maintained. It was a treat to meet the owner in front of the tavern tending to landscaping needs. The historic homes facade presents beautifully. There is also outdoor seating. Our party of seven enjoyed a Sunday brunch while knowing little about the establishment. We were promptly greeted with a smile and menus and seated on the front room. Each of the four interior rooms has a fireplace and nostalgic photos adorn the walls. They also have a small bar with a focus on bourbon. The menu had one hit after another with authentic Southern cooking. The description calls it a "Traditional Regional Farmers Menu."No question the fried chicken is the hero. Five out of seven got the fried chicken. Others the chili and meatloaf. A plate of biscuits and cornbread were placed on the table after drinks placed. The history of the tavern on the menu is worthy of your time. The owner, originally from Blacksburg moved from California to restore for his own home. Later opening the restaurant. His goal to keep the structure original and true to purpose as a tavern. The owner himself comes from a family of tavern proprietors. I digress too long! The FOOD ALREADY!!! Well as you have probably already guessed it was impressive and exceeded my expectations. Every main, every side was a home run. From the mash potatoes & gravy to the macaroni & cheese, backed apples and green beans, to the rarely found succotash. All fabulous! Only starter was ham biscuits which were good. Mains of chili and meatloaf strong. But it was the fried chicken that brings local and tourist alike in the door. The chicken was cooked up to perfection and deliciously moist The breading was exceptional as well with no dripping grease and a medium crispy finish. The only desert ordered was the brownie & ice-cream. So yummy! The owner Daniel checked in on us before departing which made our experience even more special. The Blacksburg Tavern is a Southwestern Virginia gem that's a must to dine at. Checkout was efficient and prices affordable for large quality dishes. I'm in town visiting a childhood friend and we came here for dinner. As we were walking to the Tavern, I noticed a cute little house that didn't match the other architectural designs of the other establishments in the area (brick and "modern" looking buildings). I was caught off guard when my friend walked up the stairs to the house because from initial appearance, I wouldn't have thought this was the restaurant! Upon walking in, the host greeted us and told us his name was Dan and that he was the owner of the restaurant! It was really cool to see that the owner is truly passionate about his restaurant and will show up to put in the work, even during the later hours. In terms of the food, I went with the Hungry Hokie which was a mashed potato bowl with with bits of meatloaf and chicken, green beans, macaroni and cheese. It also came with a biscuit or cornbread, I opted in with the cornbread. The food was absolutely hearty and had pretty good flavor! The one wish that I had was that it came in a bigger portion as it didn't fully fill me up. If I was in town again, I'd definitely consider going back to try the other items on the menu! read more

Love this place! Historic location in Blacksburg with delicious homestyle food. I left more satisfied than I have been in a long time after eating here. I had fried chicken dinner that came with mac n cheese, coleslaw, and it was seriously the best I ever had. We had a few different desserts that were also amazing (blueberry pie and brownie both with ice cream). I have been spending the day after trying to justify going back and having the same thing. You actually get to eat in the oldest house in Blacksburg from the late 1800s. All the walls have been painted by hand (murals) depicting that era. The service is friendly and attentive. We ordered a couple of cocktails that were good but were light. The food is simple but good. They could expand their menu or improve certain items, for example, the biscuits were really good, but were not served warm. read more

Was met by owner at door. The waitress was very polite and jovially helpful. The atmosphere was historic and told the story of returning home. The art work done by Aunt Lizzy was grand. Enjoyed a lovely lunch on Mother's Day. We were greeted by Dan who is also the owner. He was very friendly and engaging and we were quickly led to our table. This restaurant is so charming. Beautiful murals painted on various walls and it is housed in an old house standing since 1892. They have options to either order your own entrees or order family style. We opted to each choose our own entrees. Everything we had was delicious. The biscuits and cornbread served with butter and Apple butter are so good. It feels like you are a guest in someone's home and they are preparing all the home style favorites. Service was friendly and efficient. I did ask if they served mimosas and was told no but we have wine by the server. I did not order a drink which led my husband to not order a beer. I thought they had a full bar so that was the only let down of the day. If you're a bourbon lover they have a lot of bourbon cocktail options. Stopped in during a visit to VT. Service was friendly and attentive. The uniqueness of dining in an old house made it more interesting than just your average restaurant. Not to mention the hand painted walls - made it extra special. The food was very tasty and clearly homemade. The fried chicken was excellent - crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. I've been trying to go here for a long while, and I remember certain times I have tried, the wait times were a bit too long. However I was able to stop by last time I dropped off my sibling at VT. We got the fried chicken meal. I got the cornbread and my husband got the biscuit. That biscuit was so incredible. One of the best I've had in a while. The chicken was great and I was blown away by some of the "less popular" side dishes such as the succotash and green beans. Both were so tasty. The Mac and cheese was pretty good too. Finished off the meal with peach cobbler and ice cream which was not too sweet and a great way to finish the meal. The owner is very sweet and even came and talked to us. We were in Blacksburg on a Wednesday during the summer so there weren't very many people around. We decided to try the Blacksburg Tavern for a few drinks and some appetizers. We were met at the door by the owner (Dan) who escorted us to the bar. It has a great vibe. Because it wasn't very crowded, we were able to talk with the owner, learning about his background and the history of the property. Very interesting. In addition to a few drinks, we had the ham biscuits and the brisket biscuits. They were great and really hit the spot. We are looking forward to going to the Blacksburg Tavern next time we are in town, this time for dinner. read more

Service was wonderful from the time you walk in. The house is so quaint and pretty feels like you are dining at a friend's house since our first time there we both had the fried-chicken which is their signature dish. It was delicious but simple. Like a home cooked meal which is the experience we were looking for. The Mac n cheese could have been creamier. But overall the sides were good answe shared a salad that was very fresh. Eating here was one of the experiences I've ever had! I felt like I was sent back to 1850 when I walked in- old southern tunes were playing, everything was made of wood, and it just felt rustic. I came on a Sunday for lunch and it was very quiet. Service was quick and efficient and I ended up going with the brisket burger with apples. The food was great, with the exception being the cole slaw which I found too sweet. The brisket was some of the best I ever had though. Visiting from out of town and this welcoming historic home was right remedy after a long day of meetings. The service was personable and food was very good. We had fried chicken dinners and while it took a long time to prepare, the staff was quick to communicate the delay. The dining room and exterior afford lots of seating indoors or out and the patio is quite charming with its picket fence and lights. My only criticism is that the menu is very small so review it before you go. The owners might see an uptick in business if they expanded the appetizer and drink menu for the porch and patio during warmer months. read more

We were fortunate to be seated immediately while visiting Blacksburg on a Thursday evening. It was quiet because classes at Virginia Tech were out, so we enjoyed the comfortable relaxed atmosphere within the historic building. The menu is basic and inexpensive. What a way to spend a lovely afternoon. Sitting o n the front porch of this historical house that was converted into a Tavern. We were able to have our dog with us which is always a plus when traveling thru a town. Dan the owner came out to us and gave us our menus while he introduced himself. Now for the food! We both ordered the fried chicken plate; I got it with cornbread and my boyfriend got it with a biscuit. Highly recommend so you can try both because WOW, for being complimentary they were one of the highlights of the meal! It also comes with apple butter to spread on - fresh and warm and comforting, my dream. The fried chicken was delicious. It had a cornmeal batter coating and had plenty of flavor (skin was too salty to eat on its own, but perfect with the chicken and the sides). Great mac and cheese as well as mashed potatoes! However, I wouldn't recommend the coleslaw as it was very watery and not my favorite that I've had. Maybe just a slip up that day... Next time I come, I'd like to try one of their desserts too. The food was absolutely delicious. The biscuits, corn bread, brisket, fried chicken, vegetables, all fabulous. Two down sides - it took a very long time to get our food, even though the restaurant did not seem very crowded, and no one warned us or checked in with us even when we'd ordered approximately 45 minutes before. Second, there are very limited options for those who don't eat meat. I think selections from the vegetable side dishes and vegetable soup may have been the only options.
