Tasso Ham Sandwich w/ side salad (only half, forgot to snag a picture)

I've heard so many great things about The Wine Lab for many years now, but have never come until tonight! Came here with my mom on a Friday night with no reservation. It wasn't too busy, but you can make reservations via their website. The ambiance is really nice and not too upscale. It is comfortable and provides for a nice dining experience. The service was decent, a little slow, but it was still attentive. Our server was very nice. The food is presented well, with aesthetic elements to it. We started with the dip plate where you can choose 3 dips out of their selection. It is served with warm pitas, pretzel chips, and crackers. We opted for the house made pimento cheese, black garlic whipped feta, and smoked trout. All three were really satisfying, with bold flavors. The pimento was really good and worked nicely with the pretzel chips. Their whipped feta is different compared to other whipped fetas we've had. The texture is more similar to a mousse and the garlic was strong, but not overpowering. It was really good and was my mom's favorite of the three! The smoked trout wasn't disappointing either. It had a smokiness to it with notes of dill. Next was the adventurous board which included grilled halloumi, cambozola blue cheese, duck rillette, speck, and accoutrements. This was a great charcuterie board and we both enjoyed pairing the various elements of the board with each other. The apricot jam and berry-like jam worked best with the cambozola blue cheese. The saltiness of the speck paired nicely with the mustard and dull flavors of the halloumi. The duck rillette was really great, with a nice fattiness to it, providing a lot of flavor. The accoutrements were also great, really enjoyed the bread (which was served warm), the Marcona almonds, and the pickled veggies! I had the spicy Tasso ham sandwich, which was unexpectedly really, really tasty. The sandwich was served warm and included copious amounts of Tasso hand, cheese blend, caramelized onion, and hot honey on focaccia. The Tasso ham is definitely a more elevated type of ham with a richer, smokier flavor. The melted cheese blend and caramelized onions were really yummy, but the honey ultimately tied all the flavors together! I really, really loved the hot honey and it worked perfectly with the flavors of the Tasso ham. I also appreciated that it was served warm. This was definitely a step up from your regular ham and cheese! Overall, the Wine Lab is a nice establishment here in Blacksburg. Blacksburg definitely lacks in the food scene, but the Wine Lab is one of the better options available around! The atmosphere is nice and the restaurant is clean. The charcuterie was presented nicely and the various components of the board worked well together. All three dips were satisfying and very different from one another. My ham sandwich was super tasty, with bold, complimenting flavors. We enjoyed our meal here and agreed it was one of the better places to eat in Blacksburg, look forward to returning!

So many great wines and small plates to choose from

Such a cute wine bar and perfect setting ! While in Radford on a business trip me and a colleague decided to grab a bite to eat and enjoy some wine. We arrived around 6pm on a Wednesday night (wine down Wednesday) and we ended up enjoying 4 flights and two glasses of wine with a charcuterie board. Needless to say we had an amazing time and the best atmosphere with wonderful service and absolutely great wine. I normally can't find a rose' I like and the two I tried in my wine flights were delicious. I will always make my way back here when I am in town. Oh and did I mention the wine is served in little "lab" glass beakers sooooo cute !

Wow! Dining at the Blacksburg Wine Lab was a full circle moment for me and my boyfriend. When we met freshman year, it was through John Boyer's class. Fast forward four years and we decided to dine at the professor's restaurant as our last meal before officially moving out of Blacksburg, post-graduation. The service was excellent and we were seated quickly. As someone who loves sweet wine, I made sure to tell my waitress that and she offered a wonderful recommendation -- "Slightly Sweet Flight." There was such much variety in the flight and all of the wines tasted delicious. Super adorable beaker glasses too! For food, we ordered two starters -- the baked Brie and Bang Bang Brussels Sprouts. From my knowledge, the menu rotates monthly. I would really suggest these two items if you're having a date night. They filled us up pretty well! Side note: a kind waiter brought a whole extra plate of crackers for us because he dropped a single one on the ground. The service is amazing here and they really care. For dessert, we ended the night with their flourless chocolate cake. If I were to return, I'd definitely order two instead of sharing one -- it was SO delicious! Next time we're in Blacksburg, I hope to eat here again.

Awesome selection of wines from around the world - I live in Napa and the selection at this place is better than what you can find anywhere around Napa. Affordable and very good food!

First time coming here during my visit to Blacksburg! Such a cute place, great ambience, and so many wine options! We got the New World Flight with 2 reds and 1 white wine, and they all tasted amazing! Not too sweet, more on the dry side, very flavorful. I'm not a huge red wine person, but these tastes great! Can't wait to come back!

We have been here a couple of times, and really enjoyed it. The ambiance is awesome. I love that you can build your own charcuterie or use one of their preselected boards. Lots of wine and wine flight options, their cocktail options are limited. I deducted a star because one of the waiters who brought our food TOUCHED our food, on purpose. He picked up the duck and rubbed it between his fingers to assess texture and said yes, that's the smoked duck. Pate was great, and my friend enjoyed two different smoked tinned fish options. Besides touching our food, everything was awesome on both occasions. They also have a nice outside eating area.

Lauren's lost her tan and her happiness. Quiet here at The Blacksburg Wine Lab, she knows the staff here. She knows the entire town, having spent so much time in quaint Appalachia, kissing boys in parked cars, drinking wine in drab carpeted apartments. It's beautiful here. A warm wheel of brie. Some jam. Lauren's heels are scrubbed smooth and she's washed out like an artist spilled white wash all over her. She needs sun and orders a flight of wine that would pair well with turkey and stuffing. We toast a glass. Things are escalating between us and we've come here to celebrate. There's not many places to have a wheel of brie and good wine. The Wine Lab stands alone in that sense. I tell Lauren that I can relate to the Blacksburg Wine Lab, that I'm one of a kind in my surroundings. She asks me what I'll do when I return to New York and whether Mr. King will continue investing in me. As my main benefactor, I've had countless glasses of wine with him. Many as good as the rare varietals here. I'm impressed. But, truly, I'm not hard to impress. Not like Mr. King. I spoon a glob of warm cheese onto some fancy cracker and say, "I'm afraid of what he'll ask of me." All success comes at a cost. The first fleet of paintings made me feel indebted to him. And for what? A hundred k? It's almost gone. "He has a habit of massaging my shoulders every time we're out to dinner," I say. Lauren is quiet. It's almost as if she wants me to sell myself completely. Or maybe she's just like Mr. King. Using me, a young and handsome boy to validate her out at dinner. But these days no one will admit their licentious side, their animal nature. It's as if they're above it and yet, they'd happily eat their own. The few brave willing to admit their follies get buried, and this is where I lie. It's why I'm on the brink of being vanished by the art scene in NY. Continuing to massage Mr. King's ego, dating Lauren, and parading my minority status is keeping my career afloat. Lauren sat in classrooms absorbing lectures about great heroes of western art history being shameful examples of sexual oppression. Yves Klein. Kerouac. The Blues Brothers, etc. Men who drank wine and tore themselves open, emptying themselves of paint and folly. I reckon they'd delight in a warm wheel of brie. Dip their fingers in Blacksburg Wine Lab delicate glasses and place burgundy drops on their tongues. Would the great artists of yore enjoy it here? I look at Lauren and sip my wine. Whom could be unhappy here is beyond me. Though it turns out that many things are.

The ambiance/decor was very classy. It's the water-in-your-wine-glass type of restaurant. Yet it didn't feel pretentious. The waitress was an absolute sweetheart. I don't give many 5s, but this place could even get a 6 from me based on the food alone. I had a bite from the plates of every member of my party (4 entrees all together), and everything was scrumptious! The prices were on the higher side, mostly $20+ entrees, but I say money well spent! The portions are not over-sized like many restaurants, but the quality of the food really trumps that. The bittersweet aspect is that they change their menu very often so I don't know if I'll ever get to go back for that Truffle mushroom pasta dish I ordered (about which I dream quite often). However, they seem to be unable to go wrong on the food.

The restaurant is in a strip mall area near VT campus, with an outdoor/parking lot patio and two wings of seating on either side of the entrance. The graduation menu was a limited, but good selection of fixed price entrees, apps, salads and desserts. They also had cocktails and a nice selection of wine. The restaurant also doubles as a wine shop. A couple of us had beef cannelloni and one had a sausage and pasta dish, along with a calamari starter and Caesar salads. Calamari was hot fresh and very tender, with a good dipping sauce. Salads were crisp and tangy, with the addition of delicious bread. The baked Cannelloni was superb with a ton of flavor and served piping hot. Tasted like some real love went into it; same with the pasta/sausage dish. Large portions and prices were reasonable were quite reasonable. Finished with some light and airy chocolate mousse. Overall, outstanding service and food, especially when considering the limited options for finer dining in Blacksburg. Only drawback IMO is the quality of the food and service is miles above the ambiance and decor. Could still be rustic, but with some interior color and server dress coordination, would make for a classier dining experience.

But you're paying for professional bartenders creating creative beverages. You want to come here to impress a date, not get buzzed on Michelob Ultras. I visited strictly for a drink, so I didn't check out their food menu. But apparently, they do serve food here, mostly starters, snacks and small plates, but also a few mains. My love for gin is never-ending, much like my love for Lewis Carroll and Alice in Wonderland, so when I saw a drink called Painting the Roses Red, you know that's the one that I got. It is a white tea-infused gin with elderflower liqueur, Pinot Gris, lemon juice and rose water. A little ice rose came floating in the drink. It was so pretty, and pretty potent! I like when my adult drinks actually have alcohol in them, and mine certainly did. Our bartender was lovely and knew how to make a lot of drinks with a little flair for each one. First, the menu was extremely limited for both food and drinks. While the cocktails were enjoyable, the food quality and portions did not come close to justifying the $300+ we spent. We ordered the shrimp and wagyu skewers expecting thoughtfully prepared dishes. Instead, the shrimp appeared comparable to pre-made shrimp cocktail shrimp placed on a stick rather than freshly grilled seafood. The wagyu skewer lacked the quality and presentation expected from a fine dining establishment and honestly tasted more like beef stroganoff without noodles. I also ordered the lobster bisque, which was served lukewarm and tasted as though it came from a can. The Caesar salad with smoked trout was acceptable, but the trout resembled salmon more than smoked trout, and the dressing tasted bottled rather than house-made. What made the experience more frustrating was the lack of transparency regarding the menu prior to the event reservation. For a restaurant that strictly enforces reservations and cancellation fees, customers reasonably expect a much higher level of quality, preparation, and overall dining experience. Our server was kind, attentive, and did their best throughout the evening, so I truly appreciate their effort. However, much of the remaining staff appeared stressed, overwhelmed, and unwelcoming, which added to the uncomfortable atmosphere. Overall, the experience felt far from the fine dining experience being advertised. The drinks were honestly the only standout part of the evening. I also have to mention that the food we received looked nothing like the photos posted online and in Google reviews. It genuinely made us wonder if there was an issue in the kitchen this evening, because the quality and execution were nowhere near what was being represented publicly. I sincerely hope this feedback is taken constructively because there is a significant disconnect between the pricing, expectations, and actual dining experience being delivered.
