We were here on game day. Stopped in for some homemade beer and some grub! Had the wings, do yourself a favor and get them! Only had 6 but they were big and meaty and the sauce was incredible! I had the Bananavaria and it was delish! Staff was very nice and accessible when needed. Cool little bar, also has a restaurant side if that's what you're looking for. read more

Went here with some friends to try a new restaurant in the area. The beer selection was quite good, and I got the Occasional Regulars amber ale, which was delicious. I was a bit disappointed with the food for the price, and found it a bit bland, however, that might be down to what I ordered. The servers were very kind and our food arrived in a timely manner. The restaurant has a classic brewery feel and I enjoyed the nice view of Alumni Mall. read more

Mixed feelings. I've been rejected from Maroon Door every time I've tried to get in during the evening- they've told me that they're not taking new customers an hour before closure. I've also not been a fan of some one staff member's attitude towards one of my friends. Decided to give them a try on a Monday, and it went very differently. There was almost no one else in the restaurant and it went a lot better! I got a BLT, which was unorthodox but good. It had a fried tomato in it, which was an interesting take on the T portion. As a whole, I'd recommend that you avoid coming near closing time - otherwise, not bad. read more

Decent spot for a quick bite. I came here on a Sunday around 8pm (the door says they close at 10pm, but it was relatively empty - 1 other patron at the bar). We asked when they closed and they said we could come in. The olympics were on so it was nice to be able to follow along some during the meal. We ordered our drinks (prosecco, diet coke) and split a few apps (wings, spring rolls, sliders). Everything came out relatively fast and was pretty good. I really liked the wings, good thick and sticky sauce but really flavorful. Atmosphere-wise, like I said, it was basically empty. I think I might have enjoyed a bit more liveliness but all in all, not a bad place for standard small bite staples. read more

I came here after a Virginia Tech college basketball game with a friend. It was one of the only bars in the downtown area that wasn't packed with college kids or with lines out the door. The atmosphere clearly is for the older, more sophisticated crowd. We went inside and got a drink at the bar and then sat at the outdoor patio as the inside was full. I do see what other reviewers have mentioned about people being turned away even when the restaurant is still open, as we watched this happen numerous times as we sat outside. The beer was okay but I didn't get a chance to try the food. Overall I would come back again to check out some of the dinner menu options. read more

Was there for about two hours waiting for food. Server was nice but took way too long for "okay" food. Food was not worth it tbh. Drinks were good. Prices are good. Go for a drink not the food. read more

Don't come here. This was one of the worst meals I've had in a long time. Not enough staff and some kind of cook that has no clue what he or she is doing. Like how do you not know your food tastes horrible? The wait time also was wild I think I waited 2 hours for a table and another 2 hours for the food. read more

A great new addition to DT Blacksburg. Glad to have a brewery there now and not super far out. Great ambiance, not too crazy, packed, or rowdy. Food could be better. Overall: 4/5 When: Sunday 7pm, party of 6 Food: 3.5/5 - food menu LOOKED great and unique. However.. it did not meet my expectations on taste. Personally, my chicken and waffles was made to be "fancy" but the flavors and textures did not go together. Sometimes it is better to stick to the basics and master that first before trying to go all crazy with ingredients and pairings. Compared to DT blacksburg, the entrees were on the more expensive end. I'm sure they are catering more to visitors and families rather than the college students themselves. Drinks: 4.5/5 - decent local brewed beer. Nothing special though. Service: 5/5 - servers and host were great. very kind and funny! Vibes: 4/5 - nice patio and nice interior. Wasn't super loud or super quiet. Great place to grab a drink or food without having to yell over one another. Other: metered parking out front, paid parking in the surface lot on the backside read more

This place is one of the newest restaurants in Blacksburg and it's always great every time I visit. Whether you like food made from scratch or craft beer, you're likely to find something here you like. Ambiance: The ambiance here is casual. It's like a mix of a normal restaurant and a brewery. They also do brew a beer themselves that is in the giant tanks in the restaurant. It's a different vibe from the rest of what's Blacksburg and I think that helps it stand out. Service: The service here is always great. They have the QR menu and it is fairly well setup. I will say that the first time I ever used it, it was a tad confusing in the setup as beer was on a separate menu. But it seems to have been fixed now so drinks are also on the same menu. The wait staff here are always kind and prompt. I've never had a bad experience with the service here. Food: The food here is almost always really good. It definitely has improved over the past year that I've been going here. I typically get sandwiches or burgers and that's where I run into my one issue. Sometimes the bun is a tad too thick and makes the burger too dry overall, even when the burger itself is not dry. I think it entirely depends on the day as they make them in house. But just something to note. The appetizers and large plates are also all great options if you're thinking about those. Beer: I'll keep this pretty simple. I haven't run into a bad beer here. They do rotate a couple of them around the year, but it's always replaced with something good. You'll likely find something you enjoy drinking here. Overall, I enjoy The Maroon Door every time I make a visit to Blacksburg. It's always in my top 3 restaurants when we are deciding where to go eat for the weekend. If you're new to the Blacksburg area, definitely stop in and give this place a try. read more

The wife and I were in downtown Blacksburg after a hike and wanted a beer and some lunch. We checked out the Maroon Door, which definitely has elevated bar/pub food. We first ordered drinks. The wife ordered a cider. I ordered a Hazy/Juicy IPA with a strange name, but it was not Hazy nor juicy, it was just darker than blonde, and totally transparent. It had mild hops flavor, with almost no juiciness. Either I got the wrong beer delivered to my table, or there brewers have no clue how Hazy IPAs are supposed to look. A third option is maybe for some dumb reason the brewers accidentally filtered the beer to remove the hazy. In any case, it wasn't what I was expecting nor did it match the description, but the check indicated the server put it in correctly. I got the Czech style pilsner 2nd, this beer did match the description. For an appetizer we got the Rabbit Eggrolls. The peanut sauce and horse raddish sauces actually were the highlights, we kept the remaining amount for our fries. While the Eggrolls had good flavor, it could have been any type of meat inside and they would have been just as good. For entrees we shared the duck burger and the garlicky caesar salad with grilled chicken. The garlicky Caesar matched the description, and the crispy parm is a nice garnish, the chicken was well seasoned. The duck burger stole the show. This was a great burger. The sauces combined well with the duck meat. The black sesame bun gives this burger a great look. I will want this burger again. This is a nice spot right on main street, with a nice outdoor patio, you will have to find parking somewhere downtown to check this place out. I'd likely give this place a 3.5 stars but Yelp won't allow. If the Hazy IPA had actually been hazy, perhaps 4 stars. read more

Note, I do not comment on staff, a bad comment on a server can kill a business despite the quality of the product. I also do not comment on the cost unless it is unreasonably cheap. I read the recent review from another commentator and noticed his anger toward the staff and realized what that could do, so my comments are based on my opinions from what I know I like. While visiting the VT campus we found a brewery across the street. This place is decorated in the newest common style of breweries, with white tile and black grouting. The file taps were plain with dynamo labels and a gray drab paint loaded the walls. Copper, metal and black pipes are viewable across the ceiling. Think industrial and you will envision it. Truly nothing special went into the decorations. But when I entered 1 thing immediately came to my eyes, the beer list was limited to standard choices. I did not see any bizarre options. My choices were 3 IPAs, a Hefeweizen, Pilsner, Belgian Wit, stout and a saison. This is a place that is willing to bet it all on the beers in house, and from where I sit, they made a good call! The Hefeweizen, for me, hit the mark! The flavor was light the beer was a perfect chill and I was driving so I could not order another, so I ordered a stout and left it at that. For the stout the beer was too cold but after letting it sit out it was delicious, slightly bitter with a coffee finish. For food we ordered burgers. Our burgers were tasty. They offered different options from buns to cheeses to greens. As for the menu, it is a bit higher class but to me, that is a welcomed option. This places chef does a great job and the menu shows it. Happy to give this 5 stars! read more

Service, food....all of it is amazing! Connor is the best server EVER!! A great place to have good food, a great time and enjoy the vibe.

Fantastic food, beautiful view, good beer and good service. Prices are appropriate for the quality but probably a little too upscale for some. Korean short ribs and rabbit egg rolls are a must have. I was here for a late dinner during the summer. Service was excellent. My server was friendly, responsive, and had good recommendations (not always the case in Blacksburg). The Korean short ribs are exceptional. The meat seems to be a high quality beef that was perfectly braised. The meat was cooked to the point just before the fat was starting to melt, giving it a buttery tender texture. The sauce is a perfect balance of sweet and savory, though somewhat mild if flavor for Korean. The noodles and vegetables with the ribs were rather plain and under seasoned, otherwise nicely prepared. My server suggested mixing in some of the peanut sauce from the egg rolls and that was a big improvement. I'd suggest ordering the peanut sauce on the side. The rabbit egg rolls are also exceptional. The rabbit was tender, juicy, and with the mild hint of gaminess you'd expect. It was mixed with a nicely seasoned vegetable filling, and fried perfectly. The the wrap was lightly crispy and not oily. I had a flight of four of their in house brewed beers. All of the beers were good, but might be milder and more neutral than some would prefer. Several negative reviews mentioned the prices. The quality of the ingredients are easily worth the price, but cost might seem high to some, particularly for downtown Blacksburg. read more

My husband is a Virginia Tech alum, so we decided to take a day trip to Blacksburg and visit campus. A lot has changed since he was a student, including the majority of the restaurants surrounding the school. I enjoyed walking around and him telling me how it used to be. We decided to pick somewhere to have lunch and settled on this gastropub and brewery as they had a nice patio. It may also have the best view on the strip, with a clear view of Virginia Tech right across the street. We started with some drinks and an appetizer. He ordered one of their IPA's and I got a cider from another Virginia cidery. For a starter we selected the Smoked Rabbit Egg rolls (Pulled Black Garlic Smoked Brittany Ridge Farms Rabbit, Red Cabbage, Carrots, Bell Peppers, Onions, Chile-Garlic-Peanut Dipping Sauce, & Smoked Corn and Sauce). When the waitress dropped this dish on our table I was excited as it looked very appealing. The included dipping sauces were amazing. It is honestly hard to say which I liked better. We ended keeping what sauce we didn't use for the app for the fries with our entrée. There was a nice fry on the egg rolls and the inside was tasty, but I would say it was a bit muddled. Maybe too many ingredients and the rabbit got overpowered? We both agreed it could have been any meat in there and it would have tasted the same. Rabbit costs a lot more than let's say chicken. So we were disappointed you couldn't really taste the rabbit, which we excepted to do for a $16 appetizer! I went for the Asian Duck Burger (Yum Yum Sauce, Shiitake Mushrooms, Spinach, Shishito Peppers, Fried Wonton Skin, & Black Sesame Bun) with fries for my entrée. I was intrigued by the unusual burger option, especially by a black sesame bun. It was delicious. The duck was cooked well and its flavor profile came through. Their Yum Yum sauce was nice and creamy and complemented the Asian vegetable toppings. If you are a little adventurous, I suggest you try this burger. Their fries were also nice and crispy. We kind of shared our two entrees, so my husband got the Garlicky Chicken Caesar salad (Chopped Romaine Lettuce, Parmesan Chips, & Spent Grain Croutons) as a lighter second option. It was good, but I wouldn't say it was anything special. The garlic was pronounced, as it should be based on its name, but felt could use a bit more dressing and seasoning. The chicken was fine. I liked the parmesan chips inclusion with regular croutons. Some hits and misses, but if I was in Blacksburg again, I would go back for the Asian Duck Burger alone! read more

This place has some great selection of beer as well as cocktails. Didn't order food, but people sitting next to us did and it looked wonderful and smelled good. This establishment also has some wonderful customer service. You'll be lucky if you get Natalie waiting on you. Not only that she is friendly and knowledgeable of what the menu has to offer but I overheard her deal with some "difficult" customer and she was (in my opinion) a stellar. Respectfully asked the said customer to repeat what is wrong and instantly fixed it (without being condescending about it). I worked in customer service for years and let me tell you - she was amazing. You can't teach this, a person either has is or... they don't! read more

If I could give this place a half star I would. It was the first time and last time we here. We ordered drinks and appetizers first. We got Brie dip which obviously was microwaved served with stale toast. About 20 minutes later the waitress came back to take our order and didn't see her until our food was ready which was another 20 minutes. She didn't come back to refill our drinks at all until our main food came out. The jerk chicken and waffles we ordered had minimal jerk seasoning. It had a yellow mustard drizzle all over even on the sweet potato pancakes which were cold. I really pray I don't get food poisoning from this place. It will probably be best to stick with burger and fries since my husband didn't complain about it. read more

Food and atmosphere are not worth it for the price. The most expensive thing I've ate in Blacksburg and it was not that good. I got the spicy fried chicken sandwich, and the crispy part of the chicken was good, but the meat itself was dry and bland besides the spice. I also got the fried green tomato salad which was not much of a salad for $8. It came with two fried green tomato slices which was not enough for the whole salad. Along with that, our waitress did not come back once during the entire meal to refill water(and the restaurant was not very busy). Do yourself a favor and go somewhere cheaper and tastier. read more

An upscale place right off campus - really a nice place, pretty cool and not your average college bar. Definitely a little fancier than a dive bar. Great beer selection, they make a lot of their own beers and a lot of pretty cool drinks. Had the rye IPA (in rye barrels) and a couple of Old Fashioneds (one was a s'mores old fashioned, which was crazy good!). Pretty much everything on the appetizer menu is outstanding - seriously - and the burgers are pretty awesome tops. I had the Scovill burger which was their spicy burger, and it didn't disappoint. Others in my party had the mushroom burger, the beer cheese soup, and a number of other burgers... and everyone really enjoyed their food. Really glad we found this place and yeah, we hung out for almost three hours... but that's what you do when the food is awesome and the beer selection is top-notch! Great place - definitely recommended! read more

Great food and great service. Had rabbit eggrols, sliders, street corn. I'm sure we will be going back.

I'm giving it a 4 star as the food to me was terrific. I had the rabbit egg rolls (taste like smoked pork) as well as the short ribs. The food is on the fancier side so not as much the taste of my college kids. Great size and great microbrewery as well. Highly recommend but May be more for parents and faculty then some students. read more

My girlfriend and I were super excited to try this place, but as broke college students eating at a higher priced restaurant, we decided to go just for drinks and apps. Honestly, we were a bit disappointed by the food we had. The prices are definitely way higher than they need to be (12 dollars for two super small sliders - nothing special). The wings were priced a bit better, but were still nothing special. Where the restaurant shines, however, is the locally brewed beer. I had a Trazy Tropical IPA that was super good, and I'd compare the quality to big VA breweries like hardywood and star hill. If you're looking for good beer, definitely check it out, but don't expect the greatest food for the price. read more

Not PKs. Ice cream kinda good. Servers doing a good job. Bartender could use some work.

Walked in and the host looked almost frustrated to see us, as a group of workers were sitting at a table chatting. The service by Gabby was Ok , more of a duty than a server who likes her job and likes people. Didn't have the beer my husband wanted. Food came out fast and hot. Sliders, wings and toasted cheese sandwich. Food was very good and we enjoyed our meal. Didn't get a water refill and was checked on later in the meal. Left the restaurant with everyone still chatting at the table. Just not a good look in my opinion. read more

Went for beer and food- messaged the business ahead of time to inquire about Vegan options, and the social media manager was extremely helpful and friendly in curating a list, including cauliflower steaks, bean burgers, salads, and breads. When my friend and I arrived, I communicated this list to the server and requested vegan accommodation. He was also very helpful and friendly! He went to the kitchen with this info, I ordered a vegan cauliflower burger, and when I bit into it, it had bleu cheese on it. I let my server know, at which point he went back to the kitchen and came back to let me know that "nothing about the burger was vegan" (!!!). The server was very apologetic about it all, but my issue is far from with him. If a restaurant confidently states they have vegan options and can specifically accommodate, and then verify further upon arrival and at the table, and one were to order a dish that has been twice verified to be vegan- I would certainly hope that it would be. Never had an experience quite like this. Service was great, staff was friendly and happy to accommodate, but the latter point amounts to nothing if they cannot in the end. This could be remedied by denoting vegan options in the menu. read more

Opened in October, 2020. Creative, diverse and ambitious menu. We could've stayed all day sampling our way through. It was that good. Nice variety, easy on palate, not too happy. They do offer flights of 4 and 2 ciders. They support local causes. No COVID worries. Outdoor seating available and warehouse sized indoor. Don't pass this up. Our items: flight consisting of Kolsch, pale Ale, tropical IPA, stout and Czech pilsner. Food: smoked rabbit egg rolls, spinach salad with gorgonzola dressing and compressed watermelon, local beef sliders with quail egg, bacon, cheesecake with spent grain crust, Mae whiskey syrup, candied almonds, & peppered cornmeal bacon and lavender mousse parasite with blueberry compote, whipped cream and citrus crumble. I wish I could give this place 4.5 stars because the food, drinks and atmosphere are definitely a 5/5 but sometimes the service is lacking. Went there for lunch on a Friday afternoon. Service wasn't the best. Ordered a burger and a salad. Had to send back the salad twice because there was slimy leaves. After the second send back the chef came out and asked what the problem was. When we asked him to check the salad and see there were watery slimy leaves on both he half-heartedly "I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your salad" which is preferable to arguing. Waitress forgot our original drinks and we had to remind her and they came after our meal arrived. Other than that it was enjoyable? read more

Really good food (pricey but worth it). Friendly service. Brew their own beer. Have outdoor seating. Perfect location on the mall.

This was a second visit to the Maroon Door. Both times our food and service was superb. Tess was very helpful with suggestions' and friendly. The cocktails were tasty and my husband enjoyed his beer selections. We have enjoyed the Rabbit Egg rolls (oh so good), field green salad with fresh local beets (very fresh), Duck burger, and a Whiskey Tango Brat with a nice kick. Topped with the French fries which were yummy. Many students of the Corp of Cadets who had gone to Mikes Place may be happy to know they will still find the wide booths to sit in and you can order a good old hamburger. If you remember taking your uniforms to the cleaners next door (Cooks) you may enjoy sitting in the extension of the building into the former Cooks Cleaners and enjoy a beer. For those foodies coming here to hike or explore the New River this is must for good food with an upscale flare. Some may consider the prices a 3 star but this is not your typical burger joint; which there are plenty around. The food at the Marron Door is upscale, local and fresh. This new Blacksburg microbrewery is nestled between PKs and Hokie House and offers a large variety of beers! I leaned in towards the lighter beers and decided on a flight with the New To You Pale Ale, Bavarian Hefeweizen, Czech Handshake Pilsner, and White CAP Young Belgian White Ale. All of the beers were phenomenal and actually exceeded my expectations! Moving onto the meal, I split a large GARLICKY CAESAR salad with my boyfriend and decided on the LOCAL BEEF SLIDERS. The Caesar salad was the perfect size to split with someone and the dressing was heavenly! For the beef sliders I actually got the Meatless Patty with all the dressings (greens, cheese, bacon, and egg) and it absolutely blown my mind! The meatless patty was composed of quinoa, beans and veggies, while cooked to perfection with all the fixings. There are only two sliders with no sides, so I'd recommend getting another appetizer or side salad dish to pair with it in order to make a complete meal. Overall, I can't wait to come back and try other brews and food! read more

I was really excited to try this new local business in Blacksburg, especially after seeing that they had some quirky items on the menu that I've never seen at any restaurants nearby. But overall, this restaurant is an extreme letdown. We began by being seated and told our server would be right with us. The server then came over and asked if we needed some time to look things over. We were very confused, seeing as we had no menu. After looking around we realized they have a QR code for you to scan with the menu. I do not have that feature on my phone and found it bizarre that nobody explained that to us that we would be responsible for looking up our own menu. Anyways, we decided to order appetizers. We ordered the gremolata fries, which were good. Next we ordered the mozzarella bites, which were nothing special and cold in the center. We tried to the pickled & fried chicken wings, good but not great. The smoked rabbit egg rolls were recommended to us and we enjoyed those, until I bite into a rabbit bone which made them very off putting. Lastly, we ordered the local beef sliders, which were the best thing we got. Overall, I would not return to this restaurant. I'm not sure why everything is as expensive as it is, considering the sizes you receive. 12 dollars for 2 tiny sliders. 16 dollars for two rabbit egg rolls. 11 dollars for mozzarella sticks basically?! I don't foresee this restaurant lasting in this town with their sub par food and expensive prices. This concept is exciting, however they missed the mark. read more
