Went here about a month ago and just wasn't really impressed. The drinks were good, but the bartender cared more about his phone than being attentive to guests. It was just me and one other guy there. The chicken strips I had were the same thing I could have made for myself at home - seemed like frozen and just warmed up. If I could give less than zero stars, I would. We just tried to get in, after having driven 5 hours to come to the game. Excited for a night out, waited in line, only to be turned away for no reason. Everyone in our party is of age and the very inhospitable and extremely rude bouncer turned us away for no reason other than "he can deny anyone entry for any reason". When we asked why, since a part of our group was let in- no raised voices, just a why us- he said he was going to call the police. Talk about a power trip. What a miserable human being. Ugly on the inside makes you even uglier on the outside- oof. In one fell swoop, he destroyed a wonderful day with friends who came together for the game and a quick weekend visit. Would be one, but my husband said his pork chop was ok. This is the only chicken teriyaki my daughter and I won't eat. It is like a weird spicy soup with the worst chicken ever in it. Decided to give the Coop a try since it's one of the most recent "new" Blacksburg restaurants that I'm unfamiliar with. I ordered the sexy summer lemonade with vodka soda and phew it was a stiff drink and may have been more enjoyable in a glass over a plastic cup but aye it's a college town bar. As for the food, the food was underwhelming and nothing crazy BUT the main reason for the 4/5 stars verses a lower score is the BRUSSEL SPROUTS! These brussel sprouts are some of the best brussel sprouts I've had in town! My boyfriend's brother even said they slapped and that's coming from someone who dislikes everything green. Had a nice experience, then The bartender spilled my drink, no biggie, it happens. Then she tried to make me pay again for the drink she spilled. Then I realized I just got robbed in front of my eyes. The bartender didn't even have the decency to pour a shot of a rail liquor. $4 is already steep for rail, and I'd pay that happily. But she got so mad and then when the bouncer who we told about this talked to her she lied to him accusing us of lying. I'm not even mad about the shot, but the disrespect shown towards me for a mistake she made is insane. Beware, they will take your money and fail to provide the product you paid for. Bartender is brunettes and wears he hair without ponytail. If you do go don't go to her. She doesn't care. If management sees this, check your cameras March 17th 1pm. Your bartender STOLE our money. Came here on a date with my husband. The decor is awesome and very artsy-industrial. We came in and it took a little bit to be seated. We were seated at a table with a bench and chair. The chair was very uncomfortable. Don't expect to have a private conversation. It is loud and the seats are close together. However coming here with a small group of friends would be good. We placed an order for the pimento cheese appetizer. The server took the order and walked away before we could order our main dish. When she brought the appetizer out, she asked if there was anything we wanted to add. Weird, but OK. The pimento cheese appetizer was amazing. I honestly could have just been happy with that as a meal. I had the seared tuna with house sesame crackers and tamari wasabi sauce. So very good. I could have drank the sauce - except for that whole spiciness thing. Husband had the house smoked trout with potato horseradish scallion salad. I almost wish I had that too. The smokiness was perfect. The only issue and one of the reasons why I give the Coop four instead of five stars, is that the trout had tiny bones still in it. My husband was thrilled with the taste of the fish, but the bones took away from the experience. It took a while to get the check, but the atmosphere was geared toward taking your time and enjoying the meal. We will definitely be back! read more

Oh WOW! This place is amazing. We are in town for business and popped in here on our last night. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. I started with their salmon chowder. -I know, right?! I have never had salmon chowder. It was AMAZING. Then I had the fish and fries. The batter on the fish is very light and the fish inside is flaky and cooked to perfection. The fries that accompany are cut in house and delicious. Lastly, their oven roasted vegetables have the perfect balance of butter and garlic. Lastly, the bread pudding is on point! It is freshly baked, so you have to wait for about 20 minutes... but well worth it! Bottom line, I am going to sleep well tonight!! What a wonderful experience! read more

Doesn't look like it would be a great dining spot from the outside, but once you're in it'll change your mind instantly. The atmosphere is fitting for a college campus: a little loud and a lot of fun. Food took a little while to get, but it was a game day so I completely get it. The servers are great and act like they want to serve you to the best of their ability (guy at the bar was super nice when taking our orders). I really enjoyed this new restaurant and I think they make an excellent addition to downtown Blacksburg. I got veggie pasta and the loaded tots to share as an appetizer and enjoyed everything. The tots have a small serving size, so sharing with 2-3 people is perfect. My favorite thing about this spot had to be the amount of different vegetables included in the pasta! The variety was really good and it was beyond the basic pasta I've had at other restaurants. In addition, our server was super friendly and helped us decide on our meals with patience. I don't really write a lot of reviews unless I feel pretty strongly, so I'm taking the time to review The Coop. It was excellent and a nice addition to downtown Blacksburg especially if you're craving a place with some more upscale atmosphere and food. Our table shared the cheese flatbread, steak flatbread, the fried fish with fries, and Brussel sprouts. All were very good. Our waitress was very good. She also explained that they recently expanded the menu to include some larger entrees so you can definitely go here for a meal or to just share some tapas style small plates. It was my first visit so I'm not sure what the menu was like before. It was a slightly more expensive than other places downtown but I feel like it was worth it for what they served. They also did an excellent job remodeling the space from what it used to be. Conclusion: great place if you're looking for more than just a college dive bar. Give it a try. read more

I went here last night with my wife and had a fairly mediocre experience. The first impression was good: the atmosphere is quite nice inside. However, they only have a few seating options for couples. There are a few VERY small round tables near the entrance that feel like they are more part of the waiting area than the restaurant itself; these are the only option for parties of two. The tables are small enough that it was somewhat difficult to cope with two plates and two glasses of water on them simultaneously. The also use barstools without backs at seats, which are not comfortable. The seating at the bar looked much better, for reference. We both felt the food ranged between mediocre and good. We started with the salmon jerky, which was tasty and interesting. I then got the seared tuna; my wife got the pot pie. I thought the tuna was unremarkable, and quite pricy for what you get ($14 for 3oz of tuna and a few sesame crackers). The pot pie was pretty good, however. The bread pudding we got for dessert was excellent. I think the overall price of the meal was reasonable despite the tuna, and I would have given it four stars if not for the seating. read more

Chef C. West continues the theme of barnyard birds with his latest endeavor: The Coup. When I moved to town centuries ago, this space was a coffee and tea shop with couches and free wi-fi, when wi-fi first rolled out. Then it was, not one, but two excellent (the second one less so) Lebanese-inspired Mediterranean restaurants. So, when I watched Chef West do a complete renovation, it was bittersweet, though I knew he would knock it out of the park. He took that stupid sushi bar and prep kitchen from Poor Billy's and turned it into the beautiful Black Hen and Bar Blue. His eye for design is proven. It really is a pleasant, post-industrial design that makes good use of the space. The lights are low, but the tables are well lit. It feels a little dark at the kitchen bar, though; maybe some small, wireless lamps would bring that space up a bit. You can see right into the kitchen, which can assist in one's understanding of why their food is taking so long. People - if you need a restaurant job, then please go apply here. They need help. There are a hundred things on the menu and only three people on the line (two hot and one prep). The servers (4 of them) were running around, bumping into each other, and really not able to provide the level of service we expect from such a small place. They seemed fairly young and inexperienced. The bartender had to jump in and help out. On to the food. As I stated, the menu is extensive, but it's a small-plates kind-of place with a mix-and-match vibe (enough hyphens?). We went twice with different groups of people and ordered several items each time. It's probably not the best idea to serve $11 chicken wings (we got eight, i think) right across the street from THE Blacksburg wing joint, who sells them for less than $1/a piece, but there are other, more unique things to try. The flatbreads were good, but expensive for the portion due to the quality of ingredients used. We were excited for the fresh tater-tots; these are more like giant potato cubes that fell apart when we tried to dip them. I would like to go back and try the crispy Brussels sprouts and the egg shooters. We had a chicken caesar salad that was perfectly dressed and a good-size portion. The shrimp and asparagus pasta was cooked well, but the sauce was runny and ended up as a bowl of soup at the end; could use a little thickening. I want to try some of the other pastas like the tomato artichoke and the pulled pork. The smoked trout was tasty, but on the small side (though reasonably priced, we would pay more for more). The roast pork with apples and sage port sauce was the star and priced well, but not something that couldn't be done at home with a Joule and a recipe. The sides were decent, though standard - we had garlic parm broccoli, bacon onion Brussels, and garlic herb potatoes. Some things were priced well, others maybe not so much - but it looks like Chef West sunk a ton of money into the remodel, so he has to make that back somehow. One of us was gluten free and appreciated the attention given to those with sensitivities. There are vegan options on the menu as well. This place advertises itself as a bar, as well, and while we didn't sample any of the cocktails, we found the beer list to be uninspiring given the fact that we are in the best state for craft beer and there are many other places around with better offerings. The wine list has quite a few selections (three Chardonnays!?! two of which are practically the same), with some decent reds, though I'm not sure if the inexperienced staff could make proper pairing suggestions. We'll have to go back and test their knowledge. When we go out to eat, we want to spend our hard-earned money on things that we can't make (or don't want to bother with making) at home, wines, beers, and cocktails that we can't find anywhere else, in an appealing atmosphere, with quality service. While the atmosphere at the The Coop is a welcome departure from the other places in town, the food either needs to be elevated or simplified (or both) - less items, less prep, more focus. These dishes are simple, mind you - this isn't haute cuisine; it's homey, fast-casual bar food, but I believe that the execution suffers from an overly-complicated set-up. And the wait staff . . . oh, the wait staff. Somebody get these kids a maître d'hôtel. Oh Captain, My Captain! Cunningham is a good chef, but if he wants people to come in for more than just snacks and drinks and stressed out servers, then he's got to adjust the recipe a bit. read more

I can not recommend this place enough! First of all, the food was incredible. We came here after the ND vs. Virginia Tech game. It was packed. They were short staffed and still made sure that they provided quality service. The owner's girlfriend was bussing tables. The owner was working the kitchen. Our server was working nonstop. The hostess is the one who brought us our food. A total all hands on deck mentality. Truly, a great place to eat and a fun environment. We will be back the next time the Irish are in town! read more

The Coop is just what Blacksburg needed! The food is soo good. When we walk in, they someone playing the cello which set the town for the room. The decor is very mordern and playful-wine bottle lights. For an appetizer, we ordered the sweet potatoe fritters that come 3 to a plate with this lemon cream sauce to dip it in. Our second appetizer was the brussel sprouts, which I think are a favorite for anyone who trys them. Now the not the brussel sprouts your mom used to make, they are fried and have a hint of garlic and butter served with a sriracha mayo sauce. Let's just say I wanted to order another one to go . For my entree I got the seared ahi tuna. It was smaller than I expected but at the same time perfect size after sharing two appetizers. The tuna was lightly seared and then rolled in seame seeds with a drizzle of soy sauce on top and wasabi mayo on the side. I washed this all down with their signature drink, drunken bee, made with Markers Mark bourbon, honey liqueur and apple cider. That is my new go to drink. Can't wait to go back! read more

First time here. Our party of three was seated immediately even though it looked fairly crowded, which was pretty nice. The decor and atmosphere were very cool but, in my opinion, like something transplanted from DC. It was a little bit loud for conversation. We started with some cocktails which were fantastic, especially their fall version of a White Russian. We got some plates to share: pulled pork flatbread, homemade tater tots, and ribs. All were very good (my favorite thing was the house-made ranch dip for the tots) and nicely portioned for sharing with two people, but three made it a bit awkward. Service was a bit slow. By the time our food and drinks started to come out the place had cleared out a bit, but things were still running like it was packed. We had our five-year wedding anniversary dinner here last night. Service was a bit slow, but they've only been open a couple of weeks, so I let that slide. Nice selection of drafts on tap. The beers on the menu didn't indicate they were cans/bottles so my spouse was surprised to get a canned beer. Terrible service. To begin with, I wanted to order a cocktail with my dinner so they checked my ID but still refused to serve me because they thought my real ID was fake? I am almost 25. They asked for a second form of ID but of course I didn't have one because who carries a passport or anything like that with them? After they refused to serve me, my server along with a few of the other servers continued to talk about it away from the table and kept staring back at me. It was a very weird situation. Then, our server didn't refill our waters and the food was just okay. I was honestly worried to eat it because the service was so terrible. Meanwhile during our meal, one of the employees was yelling and cussing at his girlfriend or wife(?)that came into the restaurant. It was extremely unprofessional.
