Went for a company event. Because of prior experiences I almost did not go. There were two good experiences- the rice balls and my co-workers. Otherwise, there was nothing good to report. The wait staff appeared bored or not interested in waiting on us, the food was blah, and my impression of Remini's as an overrated and highly un- Italian restaurant was upheld. From the hostess telling us to "Go to the back" as directions to join our party to the worker carrying a ten/gallon bucket of sauce through our party, this was Remini's typical experience. Resently renovated after being in operation since November of 2011, Remini's Cafe, the restaurant that prides itself of serving Fresh Italian Food is the main business in a small modern strip mall, Brambleton Plaza, located on Brambleton Ave in Roanoke Virginia. Today, I visited it for the first time after it's renovation, and what I discovered was a hidden treasure, something extraordinary. After being awarded the Triad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And Remini's Cafe in Roanoke, Virginia, is the perfect example. This family-owned Italian Restaurant owned and operated by chef/owner James Ferrone, of Sicilian decent and raised and educated in Queens, New York, received its name after Italy's seaside resort, Rimini's. My best friend in college was also of Sicilian decent and I've had the opportunity of visiting his family in a suburb of New Jersey and tasting the Sicilian cuisine first hand, and can tell you, it's something else! I've also visited Italy when I was young and was very impressed by the warmth and friendliness of its people and the comfortable and relaxing environment there. As a matter of fact I consider Italy as my favorite country out of all that I have ever visited. And today, here in this restaurant, I experienced that same special feeling. As I entered through the restaurant's door I first encountered two framed magazine articles about the restaurant, together with one with a map of Rimini, Italy, hanging from the walls of its entryway. Once inside, behind the Host's Station a friendly and welcoming young gentleman greeted me and took me to table 7 which was directly in front of their open kitchen, where I was able to observe the chefs cooking and preparing my food. Soon after, my server, Madison, arrived, greeted me, and took my order. I had a Pepsi to drink, their Calamari as appetizer, and their 6oz Angus Filet Mignon as my main entrée. Although I ordered the Filet cooked medium rare, later I noticed it was just cooked medium, and according to my bill that was how my server had requested it. But the sauce and the meat was so tasty and tender, that I ate it that way without bringing it to their attention. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review and see for yourselves the Italian Cuisine Masterpieces created just before my eyes that their cooking staff managed to produce. And something that I forgot to mention but is the first indicator of the quality of a restaurant: their bread and butter served. In this case was their fresh sliced baguette and small bowl with herbs, spices, and olive oil. It was simply amazing. For dessert I ordered my favorite Italian dessert since the time I lived in Boston, where the Chef of my favorite Italian restaurant there made sure he made it fresh whenever he saw in the reservations that I would be dining at their restaurant the following day. This much loved dessert of mine is the Chocolate Bomb. It was amazingly delicious! To conclude I highly recommend this restaurant to all. It has all the ingredients of a 5 Star Restaurant: a wonderful ambiance, an distinctive menu, exquisite food cooked by very creative chefs, and exceptional customer service. This used to be one of our favorite places to dine and take friends. Recently the food has just been okay not as unique as in the past. Service was good and so was the ambiance. The pricing on items was high. The family meal used to be a bargain now it is more expensive than doing two entrees. Also it is ridiculous that you do not get a small salad included with your meal. We really enjoyed the lunch specials our last visit and decided to try out some more dishes. This time I got the chicken marsala and he got the pasta Natale and Parmesan chicken. Today's sauce was extremely thick and tasted like tomato paste. It wasn't the usual sauce. The dishes were still very good. The marsala was delicious, but it was extremely liquidy. I would've preferred the sauce on the side for the Parmesan chicken because by the time I had a piece, it was extremely gooey. All in all they had very good service and the food was good, not great like it usually is. I'm not sure why they changed their sauce, but I preferred the old one. read more

I went online to order Fettucinie Alfredo with Chicken for 4 and Ceasar Salad for 4. On Yelp Fettuccine Alfredo for 4 people was listed for $37.99. When I called, they came back on the phone after a long wait and said that they no longer had the dinners for 4 and that I could order 2 orders for 2 people. I said that this would be fine. They came back and said that it would be $126. I told them that this was ridiculous and canceled my order. Very disappointed. Visited again with my husband's cousin's family. We called ahead for reservations since we had a party of 9. So when we got there we sat immediately. The bread is delicious. My kids loved it and ate a ton. Then we got the family style fettuccine to share among the girls (2 adults and kids were 6, 8, 10, 13 and 16yo). One order of family fettuccine and a side of chicken was enough for all the girls when we ate the bread and a couple appetizers. My husband and his cousin got their own orders and barely made a dent in them. The portions are huge and tasty. We will probably be back when we visit again. read more

Had a good birthday meal this evening at Remini's. The atmosphere was excellent though it is a smaller venue. They make sure that they do the most in the least amount of space to ensure a pleasant fine dining experience. My wife had the Fettuccine Alfred and I had the Shrimp and Scallops Primavera. I tried both dishes and enjoyed the flavor of each. The scallops were not overcooked and had a great flavor. They do not over-salt the entrees do you get a much lighter and vibrant flavor. Chloe was our server and she was excellent. I would recommend this place and am glad we have a good Italian restaurant near our home. First visit. Service was great. The waitress was very attentive and the items asked for were brought to the table really quickly. The flavors for the pasta were great. If I had to pick on something, the pastas were very soupy. I'm used to a little bit more sauce clinging to the pasta, but that's my preference. Even the next say it was very soupy after warming it back up. Will be back to try more items for the menu. read more

We've been coming here for years and always make a point to visit when visitors are in town because the food and service are consistently good. They have expanded through the years to seat more and up the ambiance with a bar and updated decor. Our last few visits have been increasingly disappointing, though, and tonight takes the cake. We had 5:30 reservations, arrived on time and ordered immediately. Our food finally began coming out at 6:50. In the hour+ wait time, we asked for more bread and were charged for it, and when we asked about the long wait, we were told it was because of a large party in the back and a large amount of takeout orders (which our waitress kept disappearing to box) and "it's Saturday night." I'm glad Remini's is doing such great business but a larger volume of takeout and parties and business requires the appropriate kitchen and staff sizes, not absurd wait times. To top it all off, quite a bit of our food was cold when it arrived from the kitchen. It's really unfortunate that one of Roanoke's best restaurants is quickly getting in over its head. read more

The food here has generally been very good. And the location is very convenient to our house. But the wait time for the food to arrive tends to be long. I was very disappointed at our most recent visit. We ordered the chicken marsala for two. The vegetables were good but the chicken Marsala barely had any sauce or flavor. This is not what I would expect from this establishment. We probably won't make coming here a priority on our Friday nights out. read more

Have been here and enjoyed many times. Couldn't believe it when the place was empty and they sat me beside the back of kitchen. Radio blaring in kitchen couldn't even think of menu. Asked to be reseated and was given a table 8 feet away. Then staff starts breaking down boxes beside the table. Rude. Only two other tables guests in restaurant and they put us in back. Was dressed nicer than anyone including staff so that shouldn't have been an issue. Sorry for the poor waitress that brought us drinks. Your tip would have been more had we been treated better. Sorry for the long read but it's worth it. Total disgrace to Italian food and the restaurant business. Only redeeming quality is location. 1. Ambience 2/5 The decor was good and would have been more suited to a southern restaurant more than Italian. 2. Service 1/5 To start I ordered 3 waters with no ice. The waters were brought with ice and I had to wait 10 minutes for the waiter to show up and then only bring 2 glasses with no ice. That was probably the shining moment of the whole experience. As soon as the waters came I ordered the salmon special, shrimp and scallops, and a veggie flatbread. Each wait between seeing a server was about 20 odd minutes. She was definitely a veteran there and didn't even know her own menu (read food section for more details). 3. Food 0/5 I ordered the salmon special, shrimp and scallops, and a veggie flatbread. The flatbread came out first and was completely bland. None of the veggies were cooked. It was nothing but sams club naan with cheese and raw veggies. I'm not even sure if the veggies were cleaned. I had to dump salt on it for any bit of flavor. The salmon dish and shrimp dish came out together. The scallops and shrimp dish had no salt or seasoning, it was like he just threw it in the microwave and thought seasoning would magically show up. The salmon special was absolutely horrid. There was no salt, tons of spinach, and shredded salmon. I've never had shredded salmon except once out of a can. My wife is pregnant and just couldn't stand it so I waited 20 minutes for a waiter to show up just to ask how the food was before telling her that we needed a replacement. She didn't even know there was another seafood dish on their 2 page menu. We ordered the mahi mahi entree as a replacement. Just a reminder - my wife is pregnant. They bring out the mahi mahi entree and it was soo raw that it could have swam back home. Eating raw seafood is one of the most dangerous things to do during a pregnancy! I waited for the waiter to show up but she never did. I went to the receptionist after waiting 20 minutes just for her to spend another 8 minutes looking for the waiter. I asked my waiter to speak to the manager and head chef. 4. Manager & Chef 2/5 The manager walked up after 10 minutes to only say he's also the chef. I calmly explained to him that the food was well under seasoned and the fish was raw and a big danger to my wife; for him to only defend himself saying there was salt in the dish and dismissing the raw fish. After repeating what I said multiple times he tore apart the fish and made an excuse that fish takes a long time to cook, which is the most ridiculous excuse I've ever heard since most fish cooks under 5 minutes. I don't think he ever learned that the customer is always right. He got a 2/5 because he did comp the raw mahi mahi and the horrid salmon special. read more

We don't live far from Remini's but it has been years since I've been. It will be a long time before I go again. I ordered a garden salad with Greek dressing and the chicken Florentine. The salad had way too much dressing on it with feta cheese covering the entire top of the salad, which was little more than shredded lettuce and a couple of sliced tomatoes. The chicken florentine sounded good-chicken, spinach, and mushrooms in a white sauce over the jumbo cheese ravioli. When the main dish came out of the kitchen it was in a bowl, not on a plate. There was so much white sauce I couldn't see any of the rest of the ingredients. It was literally a bowl of cream sauce with rubbery chunks of chicken and I had to use sonar to even find the ravioli. It didn't taste good and was less appealing to look at. I'm not sure why the theme of my meal was to drown the food in sauces but that sums it up. read more

The portions are huge! Enough for 3 meals and it's very inexpensive. Some issues: no Parmesan cheese on the table and it was not offered by our server. I would have asked for it but I had already requested red pepper flakes twice to no avail and our server looked a bit frazzled. My coworkers and I arrived at around 11:45 and our food did not arrive until 12:30. We had meetings at 1:00 so we had to get our food to go. For that reason, I doubt we will be back for lunch. We recently moved to the area from out of state and have been working our way around recommended eateries. This one was recommended by the newspaper and a few others but DOES NOT live up to the reputation.Maybe we got the wrong dish (Carbonara). It tasted like the pork had been cooked in burnt oil and the dish was full of huge chopped raw onions. We even took the leftovers home to try to salvage it because the portions are quite large. But ended up throwing it away. Our waitress was very nice but the rest of the staff were cussing very loudly and coughing everywhere and just looked very unkept. We have been to several WAY BETTER Italian restaurants in the valley. Would Not recommend this place. Like I said, maybe it was the dish, but the food showed the lack of quality control and the staff were very unprofessional. Don't believe the hype. Avoid this place!!! read more

Have lived in Roanoke for 6 years now and had never been here before. We decided to go on our anniversary and were not disappointed! The atmosphere is great and the food delicious - especially for the price! We got the mozzarella sticks and the marinara sauce was so good you could tell it was fresh. We also got the shrimp and scallop primavera as a dinner for 2 to share and that was very good as well! The service was great and although they were very busy everyone worked well together to make sure everyone was taken care of and having a good time.
