Second time eating at Leonore's first time since they moved to Salem. It's still just as good as before! I had the Pasticho which is a Venezuelan lasagna and it was incredible! The portion was so plentiful I took over half of it home as leftovers! My daughter had a pasta with a creamy basil cream pesto sauce, I don't know the name of it. She let me try it, I'm not usually a fan of pesto but this pesto cream sauce was magnificent! Overall I was incredibly pleased with our return visit and wanted to mention the service. It was impeccable! Our host was so gracious and had a smile that just lit up the room. She truly seemed to enjoy what she does and was thankful we were there. We will certainly return again and again!

Old fashion decoration as from Roanoke Downtown buildings kind of decoration. We visited on a Tuesday evening it was not much customers but only one person waiting on tables and taking care of the bar. He was doing what he can but he made a couple of mistakes on our order and bill. The food was good average, he gave us a complimentary dessert as an apology for the mistakes. He was polite and courteus.

Friendly service. The food was good. Only problem was we ordered the Philly pizza and the meat was the same stewed meat they use in the asada and on the other dishes. We were expecting the standard and were shocked that it was stewed and wet. Pizza crust was nice. Lacked sauce but the veggies were fresh. Asada came in a pizza sauce. Wasn't what I expected but we both liked it.

Food (4/5): We got the Asado ($9) and Reina Pepiada ($8). The Asado was pretty good, a bit dry, but tasted nice. We were expecting steak strips but it was more of a steak roast. The Reina Pepiada was good, but it tasted like normal chicken salad. Service (5/5): Our waitress was so sweet and attentive. She surprised us with different sauces and recommended different things on the menu.

The Pabellon Criollo consists of shredded beef, white rice, black beans, fried ripe plantains, a slice of avocado, and a fried egg on top.

Venezuelan food is very tasty and the right combination of ingredients that capture the eyes, ignite the taste buds, and makes for a pleasant dining experience. Many times I have past by Leonore Restaurant in Downtown Roanoke and have been attracted by the ambience and the menu, but it has been closed or I have not had the time to stop in, so this time I decided to Door Dash the food and write a review of it. I ordered a very typical dish called Pabellon Criollo. It consisted of white rice and black beans, shredded beef, sweet ripe plantains, a slice of avocado, all this topped off with a crispy fried egg. The food arrived promptly brought by a very pleasant attendant. It was served neatly placed together and the flavor of this combination of items was something to be desired over and over again. Great eating experience. Enough to motivate me to want to visit the restaurant in person.

This place really surprised me!! Coming from a city that is big on food I have been very underwhelmed with the amount of good food and diversity after moving to Roanoke. This place was a breath of fresh air. Originally the mix of Venezuela and Italy was shocking but they seem to do it well. I only tried the Venezuelan food this time around but I C will definitely be back to have it again. Not only was the selection of food good but the execution was great. Very little criticism and what I have are more preference things on my end. The arepas, we're huge! We were told that two would be a serving and that was pushing it. I struggled to get through my second one. The fillings were all delicious. I got the pabellon criollo and scarfed it down. Only two minor things (one I'm sure I could have asked to be redone but I was hungry, lol). One, the rice needed some seasoning, just a little salt in the water. 2 was the egg, supposed to be a runny egg and I got it and it was completely solid. I was looking forward to that yolk running into my rice but it didn't happen. The avocado was nice and ripe though which is always good. And the pièce de resistance were the plantains. one of my biggest pet peeves is when a Hispanic place touts ripe plantains and they are not actually ripe. These were soft, caramelized and squishy. I will most definitely be back for more food. And at some point I'll have to give in and try the Italian too. I didn't realize until after that they had passion fruit juice and tres leches cake which will have to happen at some point.

Was $60... a bit steep for this.

I ordered on DoorDash and I'm torn. I'll put pros and cons below to stay concise. Pros: great plantains, 10/10 passion fruit juice (reminded me SO much of juice I had every day in Brazil)- don't be thrown off by it coming in a bag if you order it. So fresh! The avocados were also super good, though tiny portions. Ordered the plate with rice, beans, plantains, egg and avocado that came with beef or meat, but as a veggie, asked for without it. They were so kind and without me asking, added sautéed veggies. They kinda clashed with flavors (thinking they were a florentine Italian situation) but was super nice. Cons: EXPENSIVE for what you get, wishing were more veggie options on the actual menu, egg was underdone, beans could have been better cooked and more flavorful. Biggest pro- they're kind and nice to have options Biggest con- PRICE

After having been selected as number 4 of Yelp's Top 50 most prolific Elites of 2025, a year when I also was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Photographer of the Year Award at their Yelpies 2025 Award Ceremony, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, and where last year I was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Yelper of the Year Award, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And Cuban Island Restaurant, in Roanoke, Virginia, is a perfect example. Founded in 2010 by Cuban immigrants, Estela Gonzalez-Perez and Manuel Hidalgo, after three years of owning and running a successful food truck by the same name, today in its 16th year as a physical restaurant, Cuban Island continues to operate as a family business using recipes passed down from Estela's grandmother. Speaking of comfort food, I consider the cuisine of Cuba, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico, one of the most comforting of them all. And here on Williamson Road, in the Hollins area of Roanoke, Virginia, we have a restaurant that though small in size, has gained a National reputation for autentic, home-cooked Cuban staples. I invite you to read my first review of this restaurant which I consider one of my best reviews ever, and to view my photographs accompanying that review to get a better sense of the place and its food. Today, I decided to do a follow-up review of this restaurant, even though I have continued to dine here and order their food through DoorDash. I arrived on an early Wednesday evening to the place, and it was as sparkling clean as ever. Bright and colorful, with a casual, welcoming, and family-friendly atmosphere. One of the walls of the restaurant is filled with framed articles and well deserved awards that the restaurant has received throughout the years. I was greeted by a friendly gentleman who invited me to take a seat and handed me a copy of their colorful menu with tiny illustrations of their main meals and drinks. To drink I ordered a Batido de Mamey (Mamey Shake). Mamey is one of my favorite tropical fruits, and when ripe it is very sweet and creamy. As appetizer I ordered three Croquetas de Jamon. They were so crispy on the outside and so soft and tasty in the inside. And for my main entrée, I had their Puerco Frito (Fried Pork). These are also called "Masas de Puerco Fritas." They are chunks of pork fried to perfection. Where the outside is crispy and inside is soft with the pork natural juices. For the two sides I had Rice & Beans and Sweet Plantains. The food was served freshly cooked, in generous portions, and with its authentic flavors. What a meal! And to top it off, at very reasonable prices. For dessert I had a traditional flan, which was given to me in the original container where it was made. I would recommend that it be turned around and placed on a plate and served this way. By doing so you get a better look of the flan and can appreciate its taste even better. The food was so much, that I got full and still was able to take home part of it, to heat up and have for a meal on the following day. And that is precisely what I did. I highly recommend this restaurant. Once you try it once, I can assure you it will become one of your favorite restaurants and food.

I added it to my trip itinerary months ago. After driving for 5hrs on my route, I stopped in. I arrived around 12PM and there were 2 people sitting inside the restaurant. My greeting was lukewarm and I was seated in a cold corner and provided with a menu. After about 7 minutes, no water, no check in. Seeing the staff talking to each other and joking during that time period, I decided to take my service elsewhere. They did not seem like they cared, and I definitely did not want to be eating anyones food who is not genuinely present. It was a nice try. Yall, please implement the Southern hospitality.

Conveniently located in a very central location in front of the Roanoke Social Security office and next to the Rookie's Ice Cream Shop, it has on street parking spaces where you can park to get there When I arrived, I was greeted by a friendly hostetest who also served as my waitress. She spoke good English but was extremely happy when she found out I spoke perfect Spanish, the language we both used to communicate from then on. She took me to my table and handed me the menu. I was already familiar with some of the items on the menu through their nice website with beautiful pictures of their food dishes. To drink, I asked her to give me a special fruit juice from Peru. She brought me a Chicha Morada drink, and it tasted deliciously refreshing. I ordered a house salad to start with and a Bistec a lo Pobre as my main course. She took the order and quickly walked to the kitchen without asking me how I wanted my steak cooked. This is a detail that should never happen in a restaurant when ordering a steak dish. As I waited for my food, I looked around and observed a very clean restaurant with open space and beautiful hardwood floors. The walls were nicely painted in a lightly pink-creamy color with a few framed pictures all around the walls. This gave the restaurant a relaxed yet distinguished decor that gave one a comfortable feeling alone as well as with family and friends. The first item that arrived at my table was the house salad. The waitress also had forgotten to ask me what dressing I wanted, so I asked her if she could change the one she brought me to a balsamic vinegarette. Besides being one I liked, I find that salads photograph very well with this one. The salad had carrots, tomatoes, avocado, onions, and lettuce, of course. I found everything in it very good except the lettuce was the cheapest kind and that is something I would rather not eat. Then as I was still eating my salad, my waitress brings me the main course. This odd timing broke the tempo of being able to enjoy a relaxing dining experience. The Bisteck a lo Pobre, the main course tasted well, even though the steak was well done and I like my steaks more medium rare. But it was juicy and well seasoned, and the entire dish was very flavorful. Overall, I feel that if management acts on my positive feedback given here and trains the waitresses better, this restaurant would be very successful, and therefore recommend it as a relaxed place to eat for family and friends.

Yet very few of us are aware of its taste as we are of other Latin American cuisines such as the Colombian and the Venezuelan. Today I decided to go visit one of the few local Honduran Restaurants in the area to experience first hand the flavor of this cuisine. El Paraiso Homduran Restaurant is a small restaurant specializing in Honduran and Latin American cuisine, located on Williamson Road among other Latin American restaurants. When I arrived the front of the restaurant was a simple architectural structure painted green with two glass doors in the middle, two medium windows on their sides, and a large simple sign of the name of the restaurant high above the entrance doors. When I entered the restaurant it had beautiful hardwood floors with brown booths on each side and a row of tables and chairs in the middle. Each booth had a ceiling lamp in the form of a barrel hanging down and the place was decorated very simple with large framed artworks hanging from the walls on both sides. A small bar was located at the end with a creative artistic representation of a Hunduran map hanging from the wall in front of the bar. A warm Honduran lady came out to greet and welcome me. She asked me to take a seat and handed me a copy of the menu which was a colorful laminated one sheet of paper listing a few items on both sides. She was surprised that I spoke Spanish and this made her feel more comfortable as I found out that she would also be my waitress. To drink I ordered a glass of Orchata. To eat, instead of the typical Pupusas or Baleadas, I went a bit further and order dishes that would allow me to have a better taste of their cuisine. As an appetizer I ordered the Chicharron con Yuca. The Spanish word chicharrones translates to "pork cracklings" or "pork scratchings" in English. It is a dish made from fried pork skin or pork belly. Ideally it is crunchy and tasty on the outside of the piece of fried skin, and meaty on the inside with a piece of flavorful pork. For my main course I ordered the Fajitas Mixta with Steak, Shrimp, and Chicken. I waited for a while and was surprised when the appetizer arrived with perfect chunks of Chicharrones. Like I explained before, crunchy on the outside and meaty in the inside. Since I moved to Roanoke I hadn't been able to find this quality of Chicharron, and cooked to perfection. Just as I was starting to enjoy my appetizer, my waitress comes out with my main dish as well. The Fajitas were sizzling on top of the skillet and looked absolutely amazing. But cooking and bringing them out so soon interrupted the enjoyment of eating my appetizer and prevented from me savoring my main course while it was the hottest. However, both the quality of the ingredients of the Fajitas and the way they were seasoned and cooked were just perfect. The salad accompanying my main meal was fresh and refreshing. The refried beans were very tasty, and even the white rice tasted great. Although the waitress confessed to me that this was not the type of rice they usually served. They usually served one called Jasmin rice, but had ran out. With so much food I asked for a container to take some home. Especially because I wanted to have space for dessert. To me a meal isn't complete without a sweet and tasty dessert. When I ask the waitress what they had for dessert or if she can give me the dessert menu, she told me they had none. That they were not used to having dessert. What a bummer! I would definitely recommend the owner of this restaurant to include some dessert items. I cannot believe a cuisine that didn't include some typical traditional desserts. After all the Latin American cuisines come from the influence of our mother homeland of Spain. Most of our cuisines have at least Flan, Natilla, or Arroz con Leche. After I ask for the bill, my waitress asks me to come to the bar to pay. That is where they had a very modern cash register and she imputed the items I had for dinner. I gave her my credit card and she processed it. She handed me the receipt and without looking at it too much, I wrote the tip, signed it, and gave it back to her, keeping the customer's copy. Later at home I take a closer look and find out that I was charged an 18% Service Charge. Yet at the bottom of the receipt it States that "For parties of 3 or larger, a 18% gratuity is applied automatically. Clearly I was overcharged on this my first visit to this restaurant. I hope that when the manager reads this review he or she would take action to remedy the concerns that I have had in the positive feedback that I have provided because otherwise I have found their food to be exquisite and would happily return and recommend this restaurant.
