Right in the heart of Grandin Village one finds the Village Grill. The place to go to "Fire Up the Fun." From the very first time I went there, I felt right at home. It's a place you are welcomed from the time you step in. The food and drinks are wonderful, and the service is extraordinary. After being awarded the Triad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, I decided that it would be appropriate this year to go back to this restaurant and write a follow-up review, since my initial review was one of my reviews that contributed to me obtaining this highly esteemed Award. When I arrived the place was full. People enjoying quality time with significant others, in a comfortable environment, drinking and eating to their hearts desire. I stood there, waiting to be seated, and somehow I didn't mind the wait. Who would be my server, Chelsea came and greeted me with a smile, letting me know that soon she would have a table for me. And this was not a fake promise like they tell you at other places to keep your hopes up. As soon as some customers left a table near by she went to clean it and set.it up for me. Last time I came here, I came with.a friend, this time I came along. And you know what, it didn't mind to her the size of the party, she treated everyone the same. With the same respect and caring attitude. And you know what. This is really what makes tje big difference in coming to eat here. In no time at all she had me seated at a 4 person booth looking over the menu and enjoying a Strawberry Saffron Tonic Mocktail which was the first thing I ordered. You know what, it doesn't matter what drink you have to enjoy yourself and have a good time, it's just a matter of attitude. Right then and there, you can sayI hadva great attitude of life. This is the kind of feeling this place brings out in their customers. More than customers, they see us as their guests. Even though I was looking at the menu, I already knew what I was going to have. A sandwich that ever since I moved to Roanoke, has become my favorite of them all in this Star City: The Ricky Ricardo of the Village Grill. Having been born in Cuba and grown up in Miami and Puerto Rico, I have learned to appreciate a good Cuban Sandwich. And this is not only one that comes close to it, but has perfected it with their golden touch and creativity, and yet maintaining it true identity. There is nothing greater one can say from an item from the menu. The fries that accompanied it were also amazing. My server Chelsea provided great service, coming by at the appropriate times to check on me. For dessert, I had the Cheesecake Du Jour that happened to be Peanut Butter, my favorite. What a Wonderful dining experience I had here. Needless to say, I highly recommend this place for its great ambiance, magnificent food, and excellent service. I can't say enough good things about it. We've been going to the Village Grill regularly for decades and have never had a bad meal. Some of the meals have been outstanding. Last week our meal was delicious but the portions were tiny compared to what we've been used to. The pulled pork and the salmon were literally 2oz portions. The little cup of coleslaw was almost as big as the portion of pork. What a disappointment!! We paid over $20/person for child like portions. Our server was so nice we didn't have the heart to complain. In retrospect that was a mistake. Nathan needs to be aware of this if he isn't already... It'll be a very long time before we go back, if ever. read more

The restaurant was comfortable and the decor nice with multiple tv screens in the bar area. Two outside dining areas looked warm and friendly. The smash burgers and fries were nothing special. Wendy's is just as good. The pulled pork was average but the bbq sauce was delicious. I looked up their menu on line and there menu said they had Coke products especially Diet Coke - their menu said do as well. As I enjoy Diet Coke with my meal they indicated that they didn't have said. Only Coke Zero which I feel tastes like tin in Coke. Oh well! Not a do over for me! read more

The food was bad, not even palatable for bar food. Calling salty, mushy white fish in the worst breading I have ever tasted (how do you get overly cooked too crispy breading and mushy fish?) Fish and chips (and also French fries are NOT chips). Just bad... to horrible customer service and a waiter that talked back, to a side dish shown as 1.99 on the menu charged at $6.19... the place sucks... literally asked four times for cocktail sauce. Go to the bar and get a beer, if you must but don't eat there. This place has so much potential, with none of it realized. The ambiance is college bar, if that's what your looking for... I am from Raleigh NC. My daughter lives in Roanoke. Village Grill is the place to go since she lives in the grand in area. Had takeout last night from them, which was absolutely fabulous. Said it would be ready in 20 minutes. It was ready in less than 10. Loved that since we were right around the corner. Love what they do for the community and the park across the street. Went today and got their special which was steak medallions which were off the chart good cooked to perfection. Green beans were for tender. The potatoes were fluffy. And they catered to my four-year-old granddaughters every whim. Great place to go. We have visited often and it's a staple in my daughters restaurant life in Roanoke. read more

Used to like this place, until I went in to eat at the bar one day, my regular burger, got halfway through eating it and realized there was parchment paper still on the cheese which I ate half of... that was 6+ months ago. My girlfriend was really adamant to get burgers again tonight. We take them home, I sit down, start eating and a big long, black hair comes out of the cheese.. I was grossed out but ate a few more bites just to see another hair wrapped up in the bun. Totally gross out, and would 1,000% not recommend. I've never thought about posting a bad review but this place definitely deserves -5 stars. Cooks in the kitchen will go bald soon. Disappointed, frustrated and totally unacceptable. read more

Absolutely enjoyed my tacos!!!! And the place was a lot of fun. They also own scratch biscuit which is just as good!!!! Can't wait to go back again next Tues for taco tuesday. read more

Honestly Roanoke overall never had good service so didn't expect much. The food was blah, I had a burger and my friend had a quesadilla. I am a Grandin native and I have been coming to VG for years. Last night was one of my worst dinning experiences at Village I have ever had. This is the first time I have ever left a review for a restaurant. But I feel this needed to be said. The food was cold and quality was low. That is not even what bothered me the most. The staff was like being around high schoolers. All they did was complain and gossip. They were all hovered around the end of the bar complaining and talking about one another and I just needed a refill. The vibe and the staff at VG is declining and for someone who has lived in this area for over 20 years it is very disappointing. I can't recommend this place based off my experience having the Hokie burger. Don't be fooled by their menu that describes the burgers as "pasture raised premium beef burgers from Laurel Springs Farm in Marion, Virginia." They really try to make them sound good here to justify the 10-12 dollar piece tags, but there's nothing premium about them. The patty on my burger was clearly a pre-made, frozen patty. I would have asked to confirm, but it was obvious. My first indicator was when our waitress didn't ask how I wanted it cooked, and it was made clear when I got the burger and bit into it. The patty was really thin and grayish-brown, and didn't even look like ground beef. Upon further inspection, I noticed that the edges of the patty were scalloped, which is how some pre-made frozen patties are sold--we used to sell them in a concession stand I worked in for a baseball field. It was disappointing to realize that. I know this review sounds aggressive, but it's because I really can't stand it when restaurants try to pull a wall over their customers eyes, and I feel that that's exactly what they're doing. The food is sub par at best. This was our first and would be our last time at Village Grill. We ordered the loaded cheese fries as an app, which for us is a measure or indicator of how good the rest of He meal will be. They came out average, we could have made them at home. The best thing about it was they used real bacon vs bacon bits. The cheese was hard on the fries and it was the prelude of what was to come. The Mac and cheese came out COLD and a bit dry. The ribs were super dry. The baked beans were a step below Bush's baked bean. Each bowl was served on a torn piece of lettuce My husband ordered the Dalton burger, which had a coffee rub (that was too over powering on the overall taste), and egg. We kept driving by this place to hit the restaurants along Grandin. So one Saturday we went in. Good thing. They were having a Pork Pull from the pig they roasted for about 24 hours. It was great. Stopped by for lunch on my way between meetings in town. Props to the staff for being cool with the fact that I was probably 15 minutes early for their 11:30 am lunch start. It's a good thing I was early too, because things got busy and most tables were filled when I left. I have to mention a demerit for the fact that my waitress wiped her nose with her hand as she was writing my order down. Hopefully she washed her hands when she went to the back, but I couldn't help but notice this. Ew. My steak wrap originally looked small when they brought it out, but it was a good lunch portion. Sorry. Just sorry. They used to have good ribs. They no longer serve ribs. Got the chicken. Was just ok. The homemade hot sauce did help. The Cole slaw was really yummy. The homemade mashed potatoes were a disappointment. The potatoes were homemade but the gravy was not. Consider getting the potatoes without the gravy but add butter. Should taste great. Ok, so it was the drinks that were sooo bad. I like bourbon. I got a double. It came in a tea glass full of mixer and ice. It may have been a double but you couldn't tell with that much mixer. I got a second (within waking distance so no DUI here). Requested a double in a short glass with no ice. Got a regular tall cocktail glass (imagine a highball glass) again soo much mixer I couldn't taste the bourbon. Simply not the correct way to serve a cocktail. Please learn to make a drink. Next time I would probably order a shot with separate mixer since they have NO clue how to make a drink. Remember, hot sauce with the chicken, no gravy on the potatoes, and the Cole slaw is spot on. After the waitressed walked by me 3 times without acknowledging me I was finally seated. They had a hot pork rinds special which I thought sounded great but the rule was you had to be seated at the bar. Taco salad meat tasted chocky like the seasoning wasn't mixed in right and the shrimp taco had no flavor and the chorizo taco was the most disgusting. And the ranch was watery. Lettuce on the burger was nasty and wilted. While dining three times members of the wait staff bumped into my left arm. Never once was I apologized to. I have a steal pin in my shoulder from a military accident. I endured the pain. Never was offered a refill. I left a hand written note on my merchant copy about my experience. My husband is a big burger eater, I'm not. So if you order anything else from the menu it's a crap shoot. This is 2nd time we have called ahead to order to go. Here are the reasons for my rating 2 stars. 1. A 1/2 baked/smoked chicken was on the menu & they were out. Simple to update on social media. 2. I got chicken tenders that were overly deep fried. It's an art, you've got to keep an eye on it, or else you get it overly done. Mine was brownish, with burnt ends, & very dry & fibrous looking. 3. The canned collards had no embelishment. Most of the burgers have bacon on them, & they could have at least added a couple of slices to the pot. I just couldn't eat them, even with my own salt seasonings, & even tried a bit of vinegar. My husband liked his burger, all the bacon, but it had so much sauce on it, it made the bun fall apart. He enjoyed the battered dipped (which I'm no fan of anything batter dipped) onion rings. I also got mashed potatoes with gravy on the side. I don't usually order restaurant gravy because it's canned or jarred, but it made the dried chicken more edible. The mashed potatoes appeared real, & if not, were tasty. I would caution ppl who order these expensive burgers to go to get the sauces on the side, like that on the burgers that have bbq sauce. I am more of a farm to table type person, & cook from scratch ,using mostly organic meats & veggies from Glad Road Growing. If you're a burger fan, I guess this place isn't so bad.
