Texas Tavern is one of those rare dining places that has become practically a historic icon in the City of Roanoke. This dinner is housed in an old but well maintained tiny building on Church Ave SW in the heart of Downtown Roanoke. Opened 24 hours, 7 days a week, it is one of the few places where you can go have breakfast, lunch, or dinner, any time during the day. For this review I decided to wake up early in the morning and go visit it while it was still dark outside. You know turning an everyday event like having breakfast into a one of a kind adventure. As I arrived I was impressed to see this old, small, brick building, very well maintained, painted white, and very well lit all around and highlighted with a red neon light all around it on top. There were two men talking in the corner outside and one inside talking to the employee there and who was just about to leave. The decor of the restaurant was that of an old American dinner. After all, it first opened in the 1930's, but very well kept throughout all these years, and extremely well clean. Even the counter and ten red stools had that antique look, but nice and clean. It was like stepping back in time, very surreal, with even a working Coke machine inside. Here they only take cash as payment, but to remind you of the present, it contained an ATM machine inside a corner inside to help you have access to cash. At this time there was only one employee working there, but he was so welcoming and with such a nice personality and positive attitude in life. He started working here 5 years ago, around the time of covid, after having to change jobs, but has loved and enjoyed this job ever since; and it showed. The dinner was full of signs on the walls, including the menus. One of my favorites was a cartoon that said "Texas Tavern HOME of the CHEESY WESTERN." Another said: "Since 1930 we serve only H&C Brand Coffee. They also had for sale some souvenirs of the place, including a book with the title of Texas Tavern Four Generations of Millionaires Club by Shari L. Dragovich. It was $23 and signed by the author. For breakfast, I ordered from the Club Breakfast Menu, 3 Eggs over easy, Bacon, and White Toast with Butter, and a cup of coffee. The eggs were small but had the yellow color of fresh farm eggs and tasted the same, and their white toast was fresh and soft, from Flowers, with butter spread on them that made them taste just wonderful. Sometimes it is the simple things in life that bring the most joy. The cup of coffee with cream and sugar was nice and hot and tasted amazing. I enjoyed talking with Ryan, the employee, while having my breakfast, and am looking forward to return to have their famous Cheesy Western, Hotdog Chile, Hotdog, and Burger. In this little hometown restaurant I had one of the best breakfast dining experiences of my life. Very memorable indeed. I highly recommend this place to all of you reading my review. A 24 hour cheap eats spot serving up burgers and dogs under $5. When you ask for a recommendation, they'll likely say the cheesy western which is a cheeseburger with pickles, onions and cabbage relish. They offer it with bean chili and you can get onions added in. The place is a 10 seat dinner and at roughly 2 am on a Saturday, will have at leave 15-20 people crowded it looking for a post bar meal. They employees were nice and will talk to you about what to get and make recommendations. I will say, this is somewhere I liked trying but may not return. read more

This is a great late night place to come after you're done with the bars. Burgers are cheap. But the patties are really small. The relish was very very good. No fries. No ketchup. The server was disinterested and a bit impatient, but that's part of the charm. This is a small diner style with only counter seating. read more

Jo Koy spoke of this place during his show so I got curious and decided to pass by: a total hole in the wall with friendly service but cramped seating. Food was all fun and not really tasty. We got hotdogs and their famous chili. Were told to have it with onions and mustard and surprisingly it was good. It's cash only and there are only about 8 seats in a tiny place. They do have an atm inside. Think of an old style hole in the wall joint. Somehow it works and being they opened in 1930, it totally makes sense. I loved it and would come back. There's no room for a walker or wheelchair so don't even try. I couldn't even sit down because youre elbow to elbow already with everyone and any arm lifting would smack the person beside you. read more

Such a cute old school hot dog and hamburger joint! I sat down at the counter (only place to sit) with stainless steel top. Stools for chairs. Asked what's good and they said a hot dog. Not any hot dog, but one with relish, chili, onions and spiced mustard! It was delicious! Like a Coney Island dog. They even made the relish with micro thin cabbage/sour kraut. I saw Texas Tavern on the TV show Salvage Dogs. I was excited to try it when I visited Roanoke. The chili was pretty good. I wasn't really in love with the burgers. I'm kind of a cheeseburger snob and these weren't too flavorful. The folks working here were just SUPER nice and cool! They were very kind to me on both of my visits. Yes, I visited TWICE in two days! WHY??? The CHILI DOGS were AMAZING!! I don't know what's going on there, but they are literally the BEST chili dogs I've ever had!! Get them just like them come. It was a thin warm patty with cold cheese on generic white bread. Hotdog was gross. Boiled gray dog on generic white bread. The coke was the best part of the meal Basically it's overpriced for the portion size and quality. Got a slider, regular hotdog with mustard and a coke for almost $10. That's it. No chips or sides. Gosh, golly, gee whiz - some places (thankfully) never change. My famished teenager ordered a Cheesy Western, 2 burgers, a bowl of chili, a chili dog, and chocolate milk as one does. Since my last review, I am vegetarian. Well the "Egg Sandwich" is basically a Cheesy Western without the beef (where it's cooked, I don't care) it is one of the best egg sandwiches I've ever had - and at $2.50 - a bargain (as all the food is) especially with the price of eggs at the moment! A hot cup of coffee, the same brand (and maybe urn) served as when they opened nearly 100 years ago, along with a glass of chocolate milk, was perfection. No wonder this is a local monument! I have never been to Roanoke and came here for a church event all the way from Arizona. Our church doesn't play about letting God show up and show out! Hence why I knew I would need a late night spot to eat after. Hit up my boo Yelp and knew exactly where to go. I read the history of this local legend, the secret lingo on how to order, and the unbelievable low prices. We got 5 Western Cheesys, 1 single, 2 doubles, and a triple, with extra slabs, which means extra cheese. "I feel so cool" and 4 bags of chips for $23.00!!! I should have ordered two, mind you, I'm a petite Chica. This burger was so delicious!! The bun has a nice sweetness to it, meat charred on a flatop that has been seasoned with history for decades, thick slices of American cheese, Fried egg, and the star of the show the relish!!! I would have bought a jar of this relish. It was sweet with a tight vinegar bite. Think Sweet relish meets chow chow and peporncinis. It truly madeeeeee the burger. The team was great, friendly, fast, and most importantly, remember it's cash only. ATM around the block at the bank. Pros: The prices are a blast from the past--we had a full dinner for two for about $16. The chili (add mustard!) and burgers were good, if under-seasoned. The staff was very kind and recommended things to try. Cons: I'm sorry, but the hot dogs are really not great. Toss them on the grill to crisp up the outside a little, at least! Ambiance (5/5): This is an experience. It's extremely confusing for first timers. We had no idea how to order or what was going on after we ordered. They sell swag, so we got stickers and t-shirts. Service (2/5): The staff was nice, but we had no idea what was going on. The staff had to ring us up separately for the food and t-shirt, but not the stickers. It was confusing. We didn't know it was cash only until I was reading their signs and saw their "we don't cash checks or play with bumble bees" and said it out-loud and the staff said "oh yeah, that's our 'cash only' sign." What a cute little place it opened February 1930 during the height of the great depression.Nick Bullington opened this 10 stool Texas Tavern and begin serving their famous Chile-hamburgers and hot dogs. Their motto was give the customer a fair shake. And the Texas tavern became a landmark and the right of passage for many locals and visitors. It still owned by the same family now and now it in the fourth generation. The two guys cooking the food we're really funny and nice. I ordered a cheeseburger he asked me if I wanted the Texas Tavern relish I said sure it was awesome. You can buy it by the pint and quart I wish we would have been closer to home and I would've bought a quart of this relish. Located downtown Roanoke they are open 24 hours 7 days a week and they serve breakfast from 5:30 to 10:30. When they opened up in 1930 hamburgers were just a nickel oh how time have changed, but that was 91 years ago a single is &1.60 and a double is $2.60. read more

They only seat 10, but the food moves along quickly, so wait it out if it is busy. It is a dive, so don't think it is going to be something it is not. Though if you are brave enough to sit at the metal counter on a wobbly stool, order yourself a cheesy and a hot all the way. The tangyness of the relish on the cheesy and onions seem to all work with the thin patty and egg. The chili makes the dog! They are open 24/7 and parking just beside the building makes it easy to get into and out of. If passing through, be sure to get a T-shirt to say you are in the Roanoke Millionaires Club. Came in here on a Friday evening around 7:00 and there was a steady crowd coming in and out. Within about 45 seconds of sitting down, I was asked for my order. I got a soda and a couple of hot dogs with chili, mustard, and cheese. They were served to me in no time on a slice of wax paper. I didn't care for the chili, it had a sour flavor. The dogs seemed to be boiled so they didn't have any texture. The cheese was a slice of american cheese under the dogs. The worst part: the buns were wet. I was traveling with my best friend who uses a wheelchair and has cerebral palsy. The staff were extremely friendly to my friend. We were able to get him to sit on the counter as he was very happy to try a cheesy western. The man behind the grill chatted up my friend and even stated that he had a family member that has CP. He was very friendly and made sure that my friend got what he wanted with his meal. It was a great night and he very much enjoyed everything. I want to thank the staff at Texas Tavern for making our night a memorable one. We were not sure if we could eat inside but the wheelchair wasn't in anyone's way so that was a plus.
