But besides these two items, it's menu has expanded and now includes a delicious pork barbecue, sausage hoagies, and grilled cheese sandwiches. They offer window service and have reasantly started accepting credit cards in addition to cash. They now also have a fenced-in little patio with a picnic table and red umbrella to be able to sit down and enjoy your meal there. I arrived there on a hot summer day with temperatures in the 100 degrees. I had just eaten elsewhere, but stopped there to have some ice-cream. The building front was decorated in such a way that immediately captured the attention of anyone driving by, and so it did to me. After approaching the window, a friendly older lady opened it up and gave me a warm welcome. She told me they did not have a printed menu yet but all around the window there were posted menus of what they had. It was so hot that I decided to go with a Strawberry Milkshake, because with this heat any ice cream would melt quickly. While the owner prepared my milkshake a lady customer of the place arrived and we established conversation. She ended up being a relative of the owner of Brood Restaurant in Salem, Virginia. One of the last restaurants that I had written a Yelp review and was being featured in the app together with one of my photographs. She was delighted with by review just by reading the first few sentences and took a picture of it on my phone with her phone. What a small world I thought to myself. She suggested that next time I should try their pork barbecue. Another customer was also having the pork barbecue and also recommended it. When my milkshake was ready, I started drinking it with a thin straw the lady gave me, but it was so thick that I recommended she get thicker straws next time, but it was so good that I took the lid off and ended up drinking the cold and delicious milkshake. I highly recommend this ice cream shop and am looking forward to returning to try their now famous pork barbecue and maybe one of their Special Sundaes.

For just the trailer itself was a delightful thing worth seeing and admiring, a work of art; very colorful and with many wooden artworks that gave it lots of character. Shawn greeted me behind the small window of the trailer and chatted with me on how he started his business years ago and about his products. There were also posted menus and a price list of all the items being sold there. I had a My Way hot dog. Shawn prepared it for me and wrapped it in an aluminum foil in such a way that my hands remained clean as I was eating the hot dog. It had a Touch of Hot Sauce, Squeeze Cheese, Barbeque Sauce, Mustard, Chili, Onions, and Sweet Relish. It was like an orchestra of flavors playing harmoniously and creating a culinary masterpiece of a flavor. After hearing so much about this local family restaurant and the important role it has played in the lives of the people of Roanoke and its visitors throughout the years, I decided to go visit for myself, explore the restaurant, taste its food, study its interior design and ambiance, and experience for myself a taste of the famous Roanoke Weiner that everyone is talking about. First of all, I was very impressed by the cleanliness of the restaurant and how it managed to mix the old with the new in its contemporary interior design, furnished with new but furniture design from the restaurants of the 60's, and souranded with artworks and photographs relevant to the long successful history of the restaurant and it's founder. Branded as the Hot Dog King and Roanoke's Oldest Restaurant, customers of all ages will have memories of the time when they visited their old location and soon to be new customers as they visit this new location with a historic resilience. All focused on one simple but delicious American cuisine item: the hot dog. When I entered the restaurant for a late lunch it was already full of customers eating there; some arriving and others leaving. Some even mentioning how they have been customers of the place for years. Above the ordering counter was a large menu for one to study while the customers in front ordered their food. When my time came up to order, a young lady greeted me and took my order. I ordered a hot dog. A sloppy Joe, french fries, homemade banana pudding and a small drink of Iced Dr. Pepper. As the lady took the order, a gentleman prepared and brought it to the counter. I went to sit down at a table where I could see the inside of the restaurant and at the same time view through the front window the Historic Market Building. The hot dog was a quality yet simple hot dog served in a fresh and soft bun with mustard, chili, and onions. The French Fries were crinkle cut. The Sloppy Joe Sandwich was served on a Hotdog bun. The hot dog and fries were delicious. The chili was a bit too salty for me as well as the sloppy Joe. I would also have appreciated it in a burger bun. The Banana Pudding could have used more sugar. But the dining experience was very unique and worthwhile. And I discovered a great place to enjoy some time alone or with others.

Hidden in the least expected of places I discovered this little gem of local Café. A Café like no…read moreother that I have ever seen before; as unique and valuable as every single diamond. Owned and operated by Sue and Vivian, two lovely and very talented ladies with wonderful personalities, it is located inside of the Antiques & Collectibles Shop "Buy The Season," in Salem, Virginia. I arrived around lunch time in my pearl white Lexus and was able to quickly find a parking space in one of the spaces in front of the extremely large Antiques, Collectibles, Gift, Home Decor, and Furniture Shop. And if this wasn't enough, we can also include "Café." The Café is located in the right corner of the building with its own windows with homemade, red, checkered curtains, and vinyl banner that reads: "Apperson Café / Hot Dogs * Baked Goods." There is also another sign that reads: "Lunch Specials." As I entered through the main front door of the building, I received a friendly greeting from the people running the Antiques Shop. Then as I walked towards the Café the ambiance began to feel warm and cozy, just like those one-of-a-kind, local cafés. I was very impressed by all the homemade menu signs they had up and with one in particular that read: "Happiness is Homemade." The long, glass display case, was full of all kinds of homemade cookies and other desserts. They had sourdough bread loaves made by a group of Mennonites. And basically they had an American home-style cuisine menu, spearheaded by Special Hot Dogs, with other items such as BBQ Pork, Chili, Grilled Cheese, Chicken Salad, Tuna Salad, and homemade soup, among other things. Something very popular are their homemade donuts made from a special recipe given to them by a Mennonite friend. They make these Fridays and Saturdays only, and they are so popular that they always sell out early. I ordered a Chili Hot Dog combo with a glass of homemade lemonade, and chips. The Hot Dog came with toasted buns and were very wide and firm. One of the best Hot Dogs that I have ever tasted. The Hot Dog provider happened to be there at the moment, but they didn't want to reveal the brand name of the Hot Dog, I guess to maintain the exclusivity at their Café. This is the case with Chinito Hondureno, a woman-owned food truck specializing in unique Chinese-Honduran fusion cuisine. After hearing about this place, I gave them a call to confirm their address and operating hours for today, then I got in my pearl white Lexus and headed over there. Located and permanently stationed next to the Citgo with the Turbo Food Mart on 4101 Plantation Road in the northeastern part of Roanoke, Virginia, the food truck looked new and sparkling clean both in the outside and from what I could see in the inside. All the employees inside were wearing a polo t-shirt uniform with the business logo. Osmar, a friendly and welcoming Honduran gentleman greeted me at the food truck's window counter and took my order. The menu was conveniently posted next to the ordering window. I ordered their famous Arroz Chino, which Osmar explained that besides vegetables and seasonings, it also contained chicken and shrimp. I also ordered an order of their Roast Pork Lo Mein, and two Vegetable Egg Rolls. After ordering I paid with a Tap-to-Pay from my Google Pay, was given my receipt and was asked to wait while they prepared my food inside in the kitchen of the food truck. As I waited, I noticed that next to the food truck there was a very clean roofed-in area that could once have been a car wash, with picnic tables inside, and people talking and drinking. It seemed like a comfortable spot to stay and dine there, protected from the sun, but since I had anticipated that the items I ordered would be generous-size portions, I decided to take the food with me and eat in the comfort of my home and save some in the refrigerator for tomorrow. When my order was ready and I picked it up from the window counter, it was so heavy that suddenly the steep price I paid seemed worth it, considering the generous portions. At home, the food arrived hot, and the clamshell containers were filled tightly over the top. I loved the texture and flavor of both the Chinese Rice and Roast Pork Lo Mein. The food was truly unique and exquisite. One that could easily be from the best of the brick-and-mortar fine-dining fusion restaurants.
