Came here for a work dinner, and was pleasantly surprised at the good quality of the food here! I had the emerald kale salad and it was very good. This is a nicer spot rather than a bar (I wasn't expecting that), and has many solid dinner entrees options, it seemed. Sadly this place gets just a 3 stars from me. We tried and wanted to like this place. I'm sure it's a Bburg landmark that's been around for a while - at least it looks that way. I'd say the saving grace for this place imo is that it's a pretty casual place, kid friendly and great for large parties because of its size (in a standalone building) with a jam-packed menu (2 sided but with about 3,483 things on it), easy to access from Main St (not right smack dab downtown which is a plus actually), with plentiful parking availability. And I admit, not break-the-bank prices (see my menu pics). I know, I know - from my description above, what's wrong with this place - it sounds like a great place to go. Maybe you'll have better luck or a different opinion of this place than what we experienced... For the most part, the food was pretty disappointing and lackluster. Even for the price. Hence a grade of "C" - and honestly even that is being a bit generous. :( Party of 3 - we ordered the Steak and Cheese Sandwich, the Steak Salad and the Chicken Salad Sandwich. For choice of side for both sandos, we ordered the housemade potato chips which were probably the BEST thing we had. :/ The Steak Salad was a MAJOR FAIL - I scratch my head why they even brought it out to us like that. My companion ordered her steak MEDIUM RARE because she knows, 90% of the time, cooks have no clue how to properly cook a steak so she hedges and always orders on the rare side. It was clear when it was put right in front of her that the steak was cooked WELL DONE. Even a newb would know this. See my pic. (Note to those that STILL want to order the steak salad - call 'em on it.) Aside from the steak fail, the salad was nbd - a super basic house salad. The Steak and Cheese was probably the best of the 3 entrees we ordered - and that was just okay, no great shakes. The Chicken Salad Sandwich was MY meal - you have to know that I'm always iso a decent housemade chicken salad wherever I go. So I was excited to try it out. I would give their chix salad a mid-grade review and will say that they skimped big time on how much chicken salad they put in the sandwich (see my pic). Service left a lot to be desired. I'm going to say that we were waited on by either the Manager or the Owner. It wasn't busy when we went (and it was well before the start of the school year) so there was no reason someone (even if it wasn't him) couldn't stop over or even walk by regularly to check on us. He just disappeared for most of our meal. When we were ready for our check, we had to ask someone to find him. (We still gave a 20% tip.) Even if I give this place a mulligan on the service, I would still say our visit was a sub par experience. Disappointed that the food items were nothing special. And, honestly, for the money even with more reasonable menu prices, it's clear (imo) that they're cutting corners in other ways while they can say their prices have stayed constant. So - you're paying for it one way or another. Lefty's will probably continue to do just fine because there aren't many local, reasonably priced places in Bburg which is unfortunate. And since the student community is so transient (turning over every 4 years), new crops of students and their families will roll in every year so that will continue to keep a place like this going. A clever model for a mediocre restaurant to stay in business with...without really even having to improve on being mediocre. read more

Wife asked me to try her pimento grilled cheese, it was too simple for me. I thought it would be more of a grilled cheese, meaning more cheese not just the pimento spread. Dip also had raw diced tomatoes on top, something I haven't seen for spinach artichoke dip before but the portion of dip was small + not that great. Don't really recommend that. Warmly welcomed and immediately seated at 9:00am on Sunday, the restaurant is practicing COVID precautions well. Masks required for staff and customers, one-time menus, every other table closed off, condiments on request and hand sanitizer available. We met some friends here for dinner. We were sat almost immediately. The restaurant was not too crowded, so we could chat easily amongst our table. The drink menu was pretty extensive, but I chose to just get a beer, which was a local brew I hadn't had before. It was good. For an appetizer, the table split the nachos, which were massive and delicious! They use cheese whiz, beans, tomato, and beef. The chips were toasted as well. For my main I got the shrimp and chicken tortellini. They sauce was made with sun dried tomatoes and it was nice and creamy. It was really good! I all of it and was not mad about it whatsoever! Lefty's has a unique vibe to it, once a local beer manufacturer turned bar and grille, it is a spot I would recommend to anyone in Blacksburg. Pricing was fair but not exceptionally cheap. The chips served with the spinach artichoke dip were very plain and contained no flavor. The dip was okay, a little chunky for my liking but still had decent flavor. Decent size to share between 2-4 people. The Tuscan Tortellini stole the show here. The portion was massive and the pasta was cooked to perfection. The sun dried tomatoes added a unique flavor but I do think there was quite a hefty amount of them. The bread was plain but great for dipping in all the leftover sauce you get. It was drenched in the sauce!! My only complaint is I wish there was a little more shrimp because the dish is so big, otherwise this is a must try in Blacksburg! This is my son's new favorite place to eat, so we decided to check it out on a recent Saturday night visit. At 7pm, we had to wait a bit for a table, which was not surprising for a party of 9, but it wasn't bad and smaller tables were being sat in a decent time. We started with the spinach dip and nachos as an appetizer. The spinach dip was flavorful, but not as creamy as you would expect. The nachos were definitely the better choice of the two - a decent size and good amount of toppings. The kid had a burger (as several others at our table did. They are a nice size and cooked as ordered. A bit of a warning - they come on toasted sourdough (which is fine for me), but they have Kaiser rolls on request. I had the steak au poivre. It was a perfectly cooked NY Strip, but on the thin side and had a lot of gristle. The other person at our table experienced the same. It came with a big pile of mashed potatoes (not a lot of flavor), and the veg of the day, which was broccolini. The sherry cream sauce was good, but the quality of the meat means I probably won't order it again. Hubby had the lasagna, which was just "meh," in his words. Our server was friendly, but the timing was off. We got our salads after our entrees and drinks remained unfilled. We'll probably go again when visiting, only because our adult son likes it, but we'll stick to the burgers. read more

Loved how the burger held itself its really hard to find a black bean burger that doesnt fall apart while eating.
