I'll start by saying it was graduation weekend, it was busy, and they were short staffed. I'm not sure if you could book a reservation in advance or not but it was around a 1 hr wait. When we finally got seated the bartender was also the waiter which slowed things down. Super confused why they weren't more prepared with staff when they knew it would be a very busy weekend, but ish happens. The food took about 45 mins to come out. The food did not come out all together. So everyone ate at different times. Furthermore, the cold was lukewarm when it came out. Only 3 people out of a party of 8 received hot food. Genuinely felt like an episode of kitchen nightmares. The dining room was unkempt, the servers with the exception of the hostess were slovenly grouches The food took 55 minutes to get to our table. Let me be very clear, the food that we were served, fell short of what was stated on the menu. I ordered a Po boy and it had no sauce on it, the syrup that they said they served was actually just gross cheap table syrup. (I saw it in the kitchen). My wife's chicken and waffle was a single tinder on top of a waffle. Finally, we saw the men working the kitchen leaving one by one and were terrified about what we had just eaten. My wife, son, and I stopped by the Hatch in mid-January for a late Sunday lunch. It was OK to good - but not fantastic. On the plus side, parking is free and convenient (near the movie theater away from downtown Blacksburg) and service was friendly. Although the interior has a casual vibe, the prices seemed high for the quality of food. The dishes yielded mixed reviews. For example, my son loved the mac-n-cheese but did not particularly enjoy his Ribbe sandwich (which was a tough pork chop). The fried chicken and sides (collared greens) were both delicious, but our appetizer dish of hush puppies was strange. It consisted of large fried cornmeal balls that were difficult to break (but the honey butter was nice). The Cobb salad was OK. I'm not sure if we will return to the Hatch again - but if we do, I will definitely order the fried chicken and sides. read more

Not one patron in the restaurant for breakfast at 8:30 am. That should have alerted us as to what to expect. Only one guy waiting tables, and he could barely understand how to use his device to take our order. The guy was so inefficient, that he had to keep going back to the kitchen for each of our plates, utensils, seasonings, syrup, coffee, and butter and jelly. The meals were literally slapped together. Bacon was so hard, salty and stuck together. Two scrambled eggs were more like 1 egg, at best. Potatoes were frozen and bland. The chicken and waffles were dry and poorly presented. The service was excellent. Nikki was friendly and paid attention to us. Secondly, the atmosphere was confusing. Simultaneously coming off as cheap and expensive..weird. Food quality was inconsistent. Home fries were phenomenal..for one of us, cold and so so on the other. Adding catfish to the shrimp and grits was way overpriced for what we got. Shrimp and grits and sauce were very good. The chicken on the waffle sliders was dry and flavorless. Disappointed about that. The waffles were very good though. I feel like if you knew exactly what to order and what to avoid here you could have an excellent meal! But we aren't sure if we think it's worth the time and effort to figure that out. read more

Downtown was insane and I needed to get food, a drink (or 2) and some work done. Drove towards Gucci Kroger and saw this new spot. Decided to pop in. SO glad I did. The staff was pleasant, knowledgeable, and talkative. It was a great spot to set up shop. The drink prices are *chefs kiss* -- got a bottle of prosecco for less than $30! Grabbed a cup of their chicken and dumpling soup. It was different than the typical recipe and had a Cajun twist. It was SO good, You can also make their sandwiches into wraps which was delish. Brandi was my bartender and was so kind and helped guide my decisions. I'm in town for he game and family will be here as well. We are already planning on going back for Sunday brunch! read more

If you are looking for breakfast, this would not be the place to go. Extremely Limited with only chicken alternatives. Ordered a blueberry waffle and they were out of blueberry waffle mix so I was brought a plain waffle with blueberry syrup. Took one bite and did not want and was never asked if something was wrong or if they could get me something else. Never offered a refill on coffee. Excellent place for the students but definitely not for people looking for breakfast. read more

I'm giving The Hatch a 2 because my husband liked his shrimp and grits and because our waitress, Shanna, let us know that the kitchen was backed up because it was unusually crowded. She did her best, but kept forgetting things. I had catfish that was 90% breading. The hush puppy was dry and over-cooked.The menu didn't say that the mashed potatoes were garlic, nor did it state that there's taco seasoning on the fries. My mother-in-law was served a cold waffle and so they warned it in the microwave. Not a great experience. read more

I really wanted to like this place, and I do like the staff, good service. I ordered fried catfish, which is pretty hard to screw up, but it tasted like burnt plastic smells. The breading had a red color and really looked good, but when you cut into the fish, it was a funky yellow color. I'm not sure what kind of spices were used, but I couldn't eat it. The slaw was great, the hushpuppies were also very good. read more

The Hatch was recommended by a friend. So we decided to try it out. Strangest "Southern Food" we have ever had. The catfish, shrimp, and lobster had the same breading which was yellow and tasted of tumeric. The hush puppies were meh. The baked beans tasted strangely of cardamom. No tartar sauce available. Having lived in the South for decades, this cuisine didn't even come close. The service was passable. Overall Disappointed! BTW, they charge a surcharge if you use a credit card. read more

A friend suggested that my friends and I try this place. Boy, was I disappointed. We sat down and, after about five minutes, ordered all of our food, drinks, and appetizers. Everyone ordered water, and one person ordered a sweet tea. No food appeared for over an hour, and the sweet tea alone took just under 40 minutes to arrive. When the food finally came, the appetizers were brought out only two minutes before the rest of the meal. Several sides were missing when everything else arrived. The steak in the Black and Blue salad was raw, and all of the potato items tasted bland and starchy. During our long wait, our server only came by once to check on us. We received one refill of water, which didn't happen until near the end of the meal, by then, it was practically pointless. I didn't get the fries that were supposed to come with "The Heat" chicken sandwich until the check arrived. They were cold, unseasoned, and mushy. The only reason I'm giving one star is because my chicken sandwich was actually decent. On top of everything else, several checks included extra charges for items we didn't order, and the waiter had to make multiple corrections. Overall, it was one of the worst dining experiences I've had in a long time, and I don't even consider myself an avid yelper. In fact, this is the first review I've ever written. They will certainly not be seeing my business again. read more

Pros: The service was incredibly quick and attentive. Our meals were brought out quickly and the server was very good at keeping our beverages full. The ambiance was great for our brunch and we were able to just sit and chat after our meal was over. Cons: The menu might need some updating to more accurately describe the food. I got the chicken and gravy and was expecting traditional southern gravy. Instead the gravy was orange in color and seemed almost cheesy in flavor. This was not represented by the menu description. Passing through town and looking at the menu it covered picky 11 year old to 83 year old Grandma. It did not disappoint. 11 year old cleaned his plate. (Shrimp and ribs). We all cleaned our plates. Sides were large and got shared around. Service was great. Brandy did a great job. read more

We were very excited to try a new restaurant in Blacksburg. We were very disappointed. First off, the server that greeted us at the door was abrupt and unfriendly. It was almost empty when we got there so stress should not have been a factor. Our server was very pleasant, but somehow they forgot to give me a full menu...,mine was only the back page and I did not realize there was another whole page of options. The food was just awful. No way to sugar coat it. The ribs were dry and tough and seasoned with some strange spice . Fried shrimp were over cooked and tough. Mashed potatoes seemed like made from instant...no butter, cream, or salt. Very bland. And cold. Coleslaw was warm. Sadly, we won't return. read more

Hush puppies weren't available (big disappointment!), remoulade sauce served with catfish and fried shrimp entrees was way, way too sweet; fries were thin, hard, and seemed stale. $5.00 side of coleslaw measured barely one cup.
