Every time I come home from college, Roots is a must! I have been eating here for a couple years now and also look forward to returning. Their bowls always hit the spot and leave me full, satisfied, and feeling good. The service is always great and the staff is very welcoming. I will also note that I have never had a problem with my order here, they always get it correct. The menu allows you to order one of their bowls or curate your own. You can also add or take away certain ingredients to one of their bowls as well. Some of my favorite bowls are the Balboa, the Mayweather, and the Tamari. The bowls are super filling and packed with all the ingredients. Their chicken is also really good, not dry, and seasoned well. The Chipotle in this shopping center had a substantial line, but this place is more of a local chain, and as I ate it seemed to be getting busier. I opted for a salad bowl. The topping options weren't 100% clear, but I ended up with several beans and some vegetables. The main, grilled option that one adds to a bowl was available with tofu or mushrooms, and I thought I'd try a barbecue tofu in search of local flavor. It was a bit more on the sweet side than spicy and while it probably was the flavor they were trying to accomplish it wasn't quite what I wanted. Still, the bowl worked overall. Growing up, I was obsessed with Roots Natural Kitchen in Charlottesville, so I was thrilled when they opened a location in Blacksburg toward the end of my time at Tech. I stopped by for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. It wasn't too busy, which makes sense for a summer day in a college town. I ordered the Pesto Caesar Bowl exactly as it comes. The bowl was made fresh and packed with more food than I remembered getting in the past. Definitely not complaining, I'd rather have more than not enough. First time customer as we are visiting Virginia Tech. This reminds me of Cava but it's actually better and we are Cava lovers. I had the Apollo bowl and my husband had a build your own. The ingredients are fresh and oh so tasty. I really liked how they mix all the ingredients in bowl prior to final package. It makes everything so flavorful. There are so many options to choose from in build your own, you get to choose 5 and anything additional is an added price. The bowls have a ton of food and the price is reasonable for the amount of food. I ate half of my bowl and will probably have the other half for dinner. The staff was friendly and super helpful. A great healthy option that actually tastes good. I try to avoid carbs so could not pick one of their pre-made bowls but was able to create a really enjoyable and filling salad bowl. In particular, the tofu as a protein add in was great (I am not a vegetarian but was looking for a healthy dinner), the sweet potato added a nice flavor and texture and enjoyed both the goat cheese and cheddar. The only disappointment was the cherry tomatoes, they felt like they were sliced hours (or days) ago, weren't bad, but definitely didn't feel fresh. You can choose from a signature bowl (which you can still make substitutions) or customize your own, both made assembly style. Bowls range in price from about $10-$12. I had the Athena. It has brown rice, arugula, olives, cranberries, pita chips, red onions, cucumber, shrimp and pita chips with lemon dill dressing. I actually had it two days in a row! It was light and fresh. The chicken has a nice grilled taste and the sauces are tasty - although I wouldn't say they make the dish healthy at all. It was $11 for the grain bowl and honestly it's a little pricey in my opinion and it doesn't seem healthier than Chipotle and Mezeh with the added sauces and chicken (if you get it with chicken). It's definitely filling though. The tea here is also okay. I think I'd prefer to go to my usual Chipotle instead of Roots but it's still a tasty place to eat at, just don't expect that huge of a difference from the Mezeh and Chipotle near it. read more

We stopped in twice during our three day visit (yes, all four of us enjoyed it that much)! Think Chipotle style for salad/grain bowls. There are many selections for mixed greens and grains (you can even do half and half). Many topping options with my favorites being the roasted vegetables (broccoli, sweet potatoes and beets). I am a regular customer and I love roots. I used to eat at Chipotle but Roots takes my vote for a healthier tasting alternative. The only complaint I would have with roots is their constant price increases. The price for additional toppings has doubled at a fast pace which hopefully will discontinue climbing. We had a really great first time at this restaurant. We tried the Southern and Balboa bowls and very much enjoyed both. Portions are pretty big, we had leftovers and this was a very filling meal. The sauces were really tasty and did not drown the food, a perfect amount! I'd definitely recommend getting one of their recommended bowls over creating your own for a first time customer, I think creating your own is a bit overwhelming to know what goes together.
