This is a fast casual place, one native to NYC but apparently the founders have Virginia Tech ties and so have expanded here. It was in the offing seemingly forever and they're still working the kinks out, with some of the noodles being unavailable when I checked, as well as their tea. By and large, I have not seen Asian cuisines in the fast casual world; Chipotle tried to get a spinoff called Shophouse going but it never really took off. The poke bowl places are the only ones I can think of that have really succeeded in this niche. Junzi promises some legitimately Chinese flavors, and it did deliver. The knife cut springy wheat noodles were thankfully back in stock when I decided to order, and they have a delightful texture. To fill out a bowl, a few vegetable options are available, and two different types of tofu are among the proteins. I found the griddled tofu mouthwatering and it did have a nicely crisped edge. The suite of other options was not huge but did include some nice things like Mandarin oranges and bok choy. I got a salad and a noodle bowl, and having skipped breakfast, was able to scarf down both bowls. The salad doesn't make a meal by itself is what I'm saying. I see some room for improvement in the menu, but when I've looked for literally anything Chinese and vegetarian-friendly in Southwest Virginia, I have not found much worth my time. This was a nice surprise to find a fast casual place for lunch with authentic hand-cut noodles. My wife, son, and I visited this place in late August 2025 after helping my son move into his dormitory at Virginia Tech. First, it has a difficult to find location if you're coming by car. Drive up to the 2nd level of the garage (or if you're walking here via Gilbert Place office complex, go through the doors to the parking lot and walk to your left). Second, the beef noodle soup was delightful and very satisfying for lunch, but the portions felt a tad too small. Third, the service here is pretty good and reasonably fast. Finally, the interior is cozy, clean, and modern. It has a really hip vibe - but you'll see that folks like to eat quickly and exit (just like any fast casual place). Would definitely visit here again for a fast casual lunch! read more

Get the special Yuzu Pepper Ramen..! I originally ordered this as an additional to go order on top of the poke bowl and Gyudon (Japanese Beef Bowl) my partner and I ordered. However after sampling one bite, we ended up finishing everything..! Quite harmoniously savory without being overwhelming in saltiness or sweetness. For desert, the Japanese cheesecake was nice and fluffy, more like a sponge cake with a hint of sweetness served with a dallop of whipped cream. I recognize these as the prepackaging kind one can get from Japanese grocery stores. Tasty nevertheless, would be better if strawberries were added. Everything we had was quite tasty here. Food was excellent, getting to it not nearly as good. Store is on the second level of a little strip mall but as the old joke goes, "You can't get there from here." Thanks only to a nice young man working at a ground-level shop was I able to pass through their establishment to a hallway normally not accessible to the public and out into the alleyway where a vehicle ramp led up to the terraced level two. My GPS didn't know about this and there was no mention of Junzi being up a ramp or how to find it in the Yelp listing. Locals, I'm sure, are in the know. But we got our food, plentiful and delicious, and enjoyed it greatly in our sweet little hotel room. read more

A bit complicated finding it. But, SO worth the effort. I had a noodle bowl that was fantastic. Wide noodles in a sour sauce with pork lion's mane meatballs (delicious) with veggies & toppings. All of my own choosing. And the young woman serving it up was incredibly friendly & helpful with my choices. She did not lead me wrong. It was so good and satisfying.
