Came here with my parents for lunch at around 2, and it was pretty quiet. We're Chinese, so we were ordering more traditional dishes when we came here. I'm not too familiar with some of the English names for the dishes, but we ordered pork buns/shumais as an appetizer- I liked the pork buns but the shu mais were definitely frozen from a package. For entrees, we got a frog leg dish, an eggplant dish, and a spicy beef dish. According to my parents, not everything was exactly super authentically done, but the food was good and the portions were great. Pricing was okay. I love Hunan king! Their homestyle bean curd is really good and they let me do just broccoli and bean curd instead of mixed vegetables which I really appreciate. Their fried rice is excellent and I always get it on the side. The sesame tofu is delicious as well. read more

We were in town for graduation. Just wanted something simple delivered to our hotel. They took a little time but let me know via text as they were busy. The food was great. The delivery guy brought it all the way to my room. We just went with appetizers, soup and desert. All had great flavor, were still very warm/hot. Would definitely recommend. Yay!! My first time trying out their orange chicken and general Taos and I highly recommend I will be coming back again. Saucey, not too sweet not too salty (I HATE too sweet!!) and 2 small containers of rice were included for free! I'm gonna be completely honest with y'all. I'm a local and have had many experiences with this place. Not only does their food taste like 3-day microwaved dining hall food, but they act like they take forever to cook it. I've walked in for pickup twice now, nobody at the counter just a camera. Meanwhile I watch my already prepared food sit on a cart (that I've previously been yelled at for touching times before) sit there and get cold until numerous orders are ready to be brought to the front of the store for pickup. I WILL NEVER go to this place again. god bless the people who eat here as well as what on earth the delivery college students have to go through waiting for this garbage. Some items on the menu can be very iffy. Like I got the roast bbq pork and it ended up being very hard and dry while having a very unappetizing smell. There are good things on the menu like the pan fried dumpling, orange chicken and rice but the prices have gone up a lot and it's not really worth anymore. Chinese in Blacksburg! They have two menus - one traditional one not. Order from the traditional one! They cook their food well here. I'm rating this 5 stars because it's 5 stars for Blacksburg :) The twice cooked pork with leeks and the salt baked flounder fish (really its salt and pepper fish that's flash fried and tossed in spices and salt) is great. I really used to like this place but their service is so godawful that there is no way I can recommend ordering from this place. The past several pick orders I've made I've been made to wait for over an hour in the lobby and it's like they have no idea what is going on. Until things get better I would stay away. read more

Firstly, a confession: I have never set foot in this restaurant. I only order delivery from Hunan King via GrubHub because I am a misanthrope. I am utterly grateful that this place exists and I can have Chinese food without talking to anyone. That said, please note that I cannot speak to the decor or the ambiance or the attractiveness of staff. Secondly and finally, you have to order the weird things to eat successfully at Hunan King. I made the mistake of making my first delivery order a test case of General Tso's Chicken and Moo Shu Pork. I thought, "Surely, these are safe choices to try at any Chinese restaurant." NO! BAD! I was very, very wrong. While I have driven this initial experience into the deep recesses of my memory, I have a vague recollection of protein clumps treading a vat of radioactive orange oil. Thankfully, I persevered (ie, was lazy) and attempted another delivery order several months later. I ordered a Pork Egg Foo Young and Leeks with Twice Cooked Pork. And what a beautiful discovery! Delicious, authentic, and fast Chinese food! Ultimately, I believe this paradox is the reason for the poor reviews on Yelp. In regards to mainstream Chinese-American fare, Hunan King fails spectacularly. However, one can do quite well taking a chance on any of the items from the Chef's/Special Recommendations and Dishes Over Rice. I admit I'm not adventurous enough to really get off the beaten path (looking at you, Fu Qi Fei Pian), but I have been generally pleased with my food orders. There are still misses (eg, Seafood Mei Foon), but I attribute that to variations in personal palate. I strongly suspect I will never meet a Mei Foon I like. read more

This has been my go-to Chinese place since undergrad. It's consistent every single time and the service is great. The owner is so nice. I don't think I've ever been here for the buffet so I can't say much about that, but their menu items are really great. Their lunch specials/menu are very cheap and you get a lot of food. I would recommend ordering off their lunch menu if you've never eaten here just to kind of get an idea of what the food is like. Their food is pretty standard, but I will say their crab rangoon is OUTSTANDING. It's the best I've ever had anywhere. Since undergrad, I've lived in another country, and lived up and down the East coast and even did a stint in Texas, and this place is where I STILL go for crab rangoon. The order is ridiculously large - you get 10 for $5 or something insane like that. Whenever I'm in the mood for chinese, this is the place to go! read more

A Chinese restaurant tucked away in a little mall, the interior could well use some work, especially the entry hall which creaks as you walk down it. However, the staff are nice enough and aside from the standard menu they also have an authentic Chinese menu you can request: if you don't ask to see it, and you're not obviously Chinese, they apparently don't offer it. But I asked for it after seeing a group of happy Chinese men eating very authentic looking Hunanese food. I ordered the ginger chicken which came with a huge portion plus szechuan style cucumbers on the side. The rice however with the dish was tough and tasted old. The chicken itself was fine. Their iced tea was obviously oolong tea which was a nice touch but too strong. Really few complaints on the food except the rice but the interior is pretty dingy and they should work on that. They also were cleaning while I was there which always irks me when a restaurant does such with patrons still eating, and it was not even that close to closing time either. So I can't give them four stars despite authentic food and a nice staff. I would think take away is the way to go here, versus dining in. read more

Would not compromise on making a dish that was spicy not-spicy. We ended up having the fu qi fei pian and it gave us horrible stomachaches. Years ago this was a fantastic place to eat. NOT ANYMORE. We called ahead to see if the dining room was open and we were told yes. When we got there we were seated at a dirty table and menus left on it. OK not so bad . Our charming waitress then comes and ask us "You ready to order" and we nodded and she asks what do you want. So far, no drinks, no clean table, no chopsticks, no napkins, and she wasn't going to ask if we wanted those things. We had to request them. I have pictures. It was filthy. There was a box knife on the floor beside our table and every table was covered in stuff except for ours and 2 more. My wife orders the Sesame Chicken and rice. That comes out first ( I still had no napkin, drink or anything to eat with. (I wanted the napkin to use as a place mat because the table was sticky). Her dish was more sauce and breading than sesame chicken. Her rice was old and the vegetables cold. Not room temperature but ICE cold. When our waitress came by she replaced the rice and said that the vegetables had been steamed and put aside. No kidding, that is what she said. Remember I said ice cold as in just out of the refrigerator. She would not take them back. My food was not edible. I ate my rice and that was it. $30 bill. To quote the 1st season 2nd episode of Shitts Creek....this pace is a dump, a hellhole. Bring your own food and table if you want to eat there. Bring your own drinks too, they just have cans from a machine. We could not have been more disappointed. These other reviews....makes me think they ate somewhere else and just got confused or were just drunk college kids and did not know any better. We will eat from a dog can before we go back. Tried this place on a Sunday night after 8pm, ordered from the Chinese menu. The waitress was your typical unfriendly /uncaring type lacking in people skills. Ordered the pork in hot sauce and the mushrooms in Chinese vegetables (baby bok choy). The pork dish was okay - not too spicy but no particular outstanding features, serving size was good. The white rice served with the meal was cooked with too much water, somewhat pasty. The mushrooms with vegetables was very disappointing - two memorable things were small serving size and the sand (very poor washing job) in the dish. Plate was not really stir fried, simply blanched and either hastily cooked sauce or ladle of premade sauce, not very edible. Crying and bickering kids/infant (owners kids) in the front of the restaurant did not contribute to the ambiance. Overall a very poor dining experience. Tonight I grabbed dinner from Hunan King Chinese Restaurant while I waited for my game to begin across the way at Fun-N-Games. It was served quickly and politely, and the food wasn't too expensive for cheap Chinese food. Normally this alone would net it at least three stars. Except for the food. The chicken with garlic sauce wasn't just flavorless or bland, it was bad. The flavor was absolutely unpleasant. I'd have given it a one but the egg roll was fairly decent; maybe their fried foods are better since they don't have to really do much to them. This is the best general tso's (from American Chinese) food I've ever had. They make the chicken have this nice subtle crunch and it's honestly the best thing ever. Big fan! I got their steamed buns, sesame chicken, and egg rolls delivered to me, The delivery was faster than their proposed delivery time, possibly due to an odd time of ordering. I loved the steamed buns (they were the best ones I've tried in Blacksburg), and the sesame chicken and egg rolls were pretty good! I must say the Chinese buffet here is a hidden gem in Blacksburg! The food is not too authentic, but is suitable for anyone craving authentic Chinese food. This restaurant snuggled deep in university mall offers foodies the opportunity to feast on a great selection of Chinese food. Many of the food is fried and are generic Chinese buffet food but for $9 it gets the job done! This place is probably one of the most horrendous places in Blacksburg to get Chinese food. I ended up just wanting to get a quick meal in before going to the emporium and decided to get a wonton soup and fried potstickers. It's not hard to get these two items wrong, I'm barely a cook and I know that the wontons were left in the soup for atleast hours. Right as I picked it up with a spoon the whole thing fell apart. The soup was salty as anything as well. Now onto the potstickers, it looks liked a baby made it out of play doh. It also did not seem pan fried, just fried whole in oil. We used to get the lunch buffet here occasionally before the restaurant shut down for renovations. The food wasn't awesome or anything, but it was ok (i.e., there were a couple things on the buffet that were good). This was the first time we've been here since the re-opening. They've done away with the buffet, and the quality has taken a nosedive. We ordered 5 dishes, and only one was ok. The General Tso's chicken tasted like Orange chicken, but re-fried with some peppers and given a new name. Really, it tasted like old chicken that has been put into the fryer for a second time. We ordered a Mapo Tofu dish that was completely inedible. It wasn't just bland, it was actually gross. The beef noodles were equally bad--the beef looked like the nasty bits that supermarkets sell for a deep discount and the noodles were just ramen without the curls. Finally, the chicken on a stick appetizer we ordered came out only after we were halfway through the meal (which ended up mostly untouched), and was also not very tasty. The only decent dish was the garlic broccoli dish. Maybe the restaurant changed ownership? Perhaps we just caught them on a bad day? Not sure, but we aren't coming back. read more

I'm very surprised they delivered as far out as we were since most places typically don't.
