I've been to Hamro more times than I can count. It honestly depends on the time and day you go and whether it's parent's weekend, Open House weekend or a football/basketball game is going on at Virginia Tech. If you go during that time- it's going to be hard to find a table unless you go during the event time. Anyways! Service is standard but also lowkey slow. It usually takes a while for our order to be taken and for the food to come out- especially if it's busy. And not like "a while"... like A WHILE. The ambiance of the restaurant generally depends on who's there but there's no music playing ever- which I also really appreciate! And lastly, the food is wonderful! I get the Nepali Chai which is milk tea with some spices and it's always soooo yummy. They also have sugar on the tables, which I usually add. The portions are very substantial with most entrees being served with rice (especially if it's a stew). The Butter Chicken Momo (dumplings) are one of my favorite things to order! You can also choose a spice level, and level 3 is generally a lot for an average spice enjoyer. Level 2 is keeping it real and enjoyable. This restaurant sits on the edge of Blacksburg's main street stretch, but notably has its own parking. It was fairly busy with both takeout and in-person business when I visited. The menu has some distinctively Nepali specialties in addition to things you could find at any Indian restaurant, so I sampled their momos, dumplings with a soy and vegetable mince which are available with several different preparations. I ordered them with chili sauce and asked for the full 5/5 spice level, and discovered that these people do not mess around. Having eaten only half my portion it felt like I was melting away the lining of my esophagus. Most diners probably will want to stick to a lower spice level, but I'm not saying it wasn't delicious. Their samosa chaat was gigantic but none of the flavors really hit me; perhaps it was too mild in comparison to my fiery dumplings. This is easily my favorite Indian spot in Blacksburg. It looks like a little hole in the wall restaurant but once you get inside, it is well decorated with a nice vibe. The service is always quick and the food is good. I recommend their momo (any type) and any of their chicken dishes. If you are in Blacksburg, make this one of your dinner/lunch stops. New Nepalese place that is conveniently placed in corner of Blacksburg main street. Very walkable and has a parking lot for cars Food: Chicken lolipops are a must have. Great flavor and crispiness from the chicken. The chicken biryani was also very good. The chicken jhol momo is a must have as well, great amount of flavor in each momo. The garlic naan was also very good, very garlicky. Mango lassi was very creamy and mangoy. Do not get the tikka masala - flavorless. Service: Service was slow as it was a new restaurant, I expect it to improve as they get on their feet. The servers are super friendly. Really disappointed with the "cheapness" os this restaurant. We took out an Indian and Nepalese grad students who were leaving the area. After eating a full meal for 4, I surprised them with lassies for desert, I prefer the regular flavor and ordered 3 of them to go. They were deliver and were unsweetened. I complained to our waiter and he said that they were the plain lassies. I asked if we could exchange them or have them flavored and he answered with an emphatic "NO"! Came here on a weekday lunch during winter break, and it was actually busier than I expected! However, my friend and I had absolutely no issue getting seated. I came here thinking that I'd be getting some Nepalese food, but Hamro really does a mix of Nepalese and Indian food. I ordered the goat biryani and got garlic naan for the table, which were tasty, but not exceptional. The garlic naan had pieces of garlic on top of it that I had not seen on garlic naan before, but were still not bad. Food was fine - the restaurant had a bit of wait and they didn't seem to have a clue to ask who offer to get seated or why not ask who was there first. We finally got seated. The ambience is average and food is fine to good. We tried palak paneer and vegeterian momo's with jhol. They were fine. Service is a bit slow, we asked for a coke and they just didn't bring it - we ended up reminding them 3 additional times. So I would have given four stars if the service was better. I was really looking forward to a nice Indian meal, but this was a huge letdown. First, the rice was cold, hard, and clumpy--it felt like it had been sitting out for hours. The butter chicken was tasty, but there were only SIX pieces of chicken in the entire dish! For the price, I expected way more. To top it off, they forgot my mango lassi completely. The food is delicious! This is one of our favorite places to go. The service has always been good and its conveniently close to VT.

We had aloo tikki for appetizer, ginger chicken and butter chicken for entrees. I cannot speak to authenticity because I haven't been to India or Nepal, but it seemed pretty darn authentic. Recently opened. Good Indian authentic restaurant in NRV. Better than Indian garden at Blacksburg by miles !! Good choices in menu and good for take out. Not experienced indoor dinning yet, seems ok. I have done mostly takeouts, they have not messed up any of my orders so they have a good process. Prices are premium but I would pay for convenience at NRV region. Spice levels are consistent. Freshly cooked food always. Quality of food has been consistent as well. Steamed Momo is good and other variants of momo in menu are experimental. Biryani is not dum but good enough for NRV. First time ordering food from Hamro Kitchen. Order was ready upon arrival. The staff member who rang up my order was nice. The dining area looked nice and spacious though I didn't eat in. And the food... the food was delicious. The only thing that didn't impress me was the naan, but it could be because it was a to go order and food sweats when wrapped up hot and in containers. The aloo chat was fried potatoes smothered in Chana masala (chickpea curry), and it was super savory and yummy. Spiced and seasoned well. Only $9, and it was filling. I've eaten at Hamro three times for lunch, getting the lamb biryani, chicken momos in tomato-soy soup, and one of the dals. In every case, the food was cooked nicely and came quickly. Service was very good, and the dining room offers lots of seats without being overcrowded. But there are things to improve. The menu is unwieldy, and no kitchen can cook that many dishes well. I recommend cutting it in half (or even by 2/3rds) and focusing more on a few dishes they can be known for. More Nepalese-specific cuisine would appeal to me. Also, serve some kind of vegetable side dish or garnish with every entree. The lamb biryani was just lamb and spicy rice. The most important suggestion I can give is to use salt in the food. Everything was nicely cooked and spiced, but it was overall bland. Seasoning is so important to good food. read more

Amazing hidden Jem in Blacksburg! I love the food. My favorites are vegetable pakora, chicken 65, chicken momo, fish curry, and butter naan.

I have been to Hamro twice with my family and both times were excellent. Today I got the chicken chili momo and it's possibly the best bite I've eaten in the NRV. We've also had biryani, curries, and fried rice; everything is really good. I suspect some will complain about the price but the quality of the food justifies it.
