Peruvian Cuisine is one of the best in the world and right here in Southwest Roanoke, on Brambleton Ave, we are fortunate to have a restaurant that represents it very well: Inka Grill. After being awarded the Triad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And Inka Grill Peruvian Cuisine in Roanoke, Virginia, is the perfect example. I've been eating at this restaurant since they were in another location and then through Door Dash delivery, as a matter of fact the main photograph on their Yelp website is a close-up of their Lomo Saltado I took from the container delivered through Door Dash. So today I decided to go visit for the first time their Cave Spring location on Brambleton Ave in Roanoke, Virginia. Located inside a small, clean building, but nothing fancy, the success of this restaurant has been the fresh ingredients they use to make their wonderful recipes. My two favorite dishes are the Lomo Saltado and their Bistec a lo Pobre. And the main reason why I like them is the top quality meat they use. It is so tender and tasty and at reasonable prices, that can compete with many of the most expensive restaurants in the area, and come on top. When I arrived at the restaurant there was a group of three Hispanic ladies having dinner there. Later an American older couple with a college age daughter also came in and sat at the table text to mine. They all seemed to have something in common: steady customers very familiar with the menu and their favorite items. My server Lizbeth greeted and welcomed me to the restaurant, took me to my table, and handed me the menu. Not too extensive but each of the few items were much to be desired. To drink I had a glass of Chicha Morada, a very popular non-alcoholic drink from Peru. As an appetizer I had a House Salad. For my main entrée I had a Bistec a lo Pobre cooked medium rare. It is rice and beans together forming a roll, a tender thick steak, fried ripe plantains, a fried egg, and a criolla sauce. Everything was so tasty and delicious. Stopped here on a road trip from Eastern VA on our way to TX and wowzers. Worth every extra min of our stop. I got the pollo Inka, my daughter got the bistecca a lo pobre, my son-in-law got the half chicken with rice and beans. All of us were so satisfied with our food choices! This was a good find! Came here for lunch with a group of friends. I am a fan of Peruvian cuisine every chance I get, I get some. They were very accommodating to our pretty large group of 9 adults and 3 kids. The service was great. When it came time order, one of the other couples ordered an appetizer but it came out right along with the food. Granted the appetizer was not your normal fried pickles or queso and chips in order for it to come out quicker than the food but still if it's under appetizers it should be out before the main meal. The appetizer was Anticucho (marinated veal heart), this was packed of flavor and delicious! But...Moving on to the food food, the presentation of all the dishes was really good. The plates were unique and go really well with the restaurant. Being my first time trying this place out; I tried one of my favorite Peruvian dishes that I have had before at other places and loved. I had the Lenguine Huancaina con Lomo. Presented nicely, but I do have to say the Lenguine and meat could have had a tad more seasoning/flavor. The sauce that came with the meat was great, but the meat it self was bland. My husband had the Chicharrón de Pescado, basically pieces of fish deep fried served with some type of tartar sauce. The sauce saved the dish, the fish was bland as well. The fried yuca was ok, no salt either. And we had pineapple juice to drink, I understand it was a natural fruit drink but it wasn't sweet as I expected it to be either. Like I said before I have had my fair share of Peruvian food to know what flavors to look out for, maybe it was an off day, I don't know, but i was a tad disappointed as far as flavors go. Each time I visit it gets better and better. No issues with the food, as it is seasoned to perfection. I had the seafood fried rice this time and it was a large portion, and didn't skimp on the seafood at all. My only drawback for this visit was the ventilation system. I was placed by the back door, and the door was open. Flies were flying in. I asked the waitress to close the door, and she did. But after the kitchen got a little smoky, she opened it up again. More flies. I'm from the country so flies and outdoor eating is fine with me, but for other patrons, it may not be best sanitation wise. read more

Tried Inka Grill and ordered the lomo saltado. It was really good and definitely worth trying if you come here. The only thing I didn't love was the cleanliness of the restaurant the night we went. There were quite a few flies around which was a little distracting. Not sure what that was about. While in Roanoke for work I decided to look for places away from the downtown area to visit and since I love Peruvian food, I came here. I chose this particular location based on the reviews, as there were many and they were very complimentary of the experiences others have had here. The young girls working when I went were very friendly and helpful. Their menu is loaded with lots of options, including some items I wasn't familiar with, like "Tacu Tacu" style food, which is where they add on a fried (probably more sautéed) rice roll. I started with their Huancaína Potatoes and asked for the sauce to be spicy, which they did for me. The sauce was really good. The potatoes were so bland and dense, though cooked perfectly, that the sauce couldn't overcome the denseness and blandness of the sauce. It's sort of a baked potato that's been peeled and then this sauce put on top. If they had made and served it exactly like the pic shows, which is 4 slices of potato with sauce all over each slice I would have definitely enjoyed it more. Next up was their Tacu tacu con lomo. I love Lomo Saltado, but rarely get it because many places don't use the right cut of beef and/or they don't use enough heat when wok'ing it to cook it, thus the beef isn't as flavorful as it should be. This version definitely had plenty of sauce, but the flavor of the sauce was totally missing that umami that comes from wok'ing it, Wok hei-style, which is when the chef pulls back and lets fire reach into the wok, kissing the food with flame... Many Szechuan chefs do this perfectly and it's a part of the flavor that makes that food so great. But here, they totally missed the mark on my dish. The meat actually tasted a little funny... not sure why, but it tasted very greasy/fatty in flavor, which wasn't appealing at all. I actually enjoyed the tomatoes and onions more than the beef. The Tacu Tacu portion of the dish was decent in the sauce. Their green sauce was really good and it helped this dish immensely. Overall... I left disappointed. But that was just my experience, I'm sure they have other items that are very good. Would I go back? Probably not. read more

my husband and I were so excited to try this place, we drove 40min to it, to get take out, only to be left completely disappointed. We both ordered the Lomo Saltee and what a disappointment. My plate had if much 3 small pieces of meat, it tasted like straight soy sauce was just poured on top of it, I felt like I was eating a weird plate from panda express, meat tasted like beef liver and was chewy. Fries which are promised to be crispy on their menu was just white and soggy. The rice was the only thing okay, tasted like rice. Completely disappointing and honestly Im just sad about it. This resturant is small but has really good reviews so we decided to try it after trying another place first and finding it closed. We walked in and stood at the door for 5 minutes while no one greeted us. Maybe we seat ourselves? There was no sign. No host. So we found a table in a corner and sat down and waited. It was not busy so I was confused about the lack of customer service. It was 6 o'clock so not close to closing time. Three employees were just putting around in what seemed like slow motion not really doing anything. Finally I made eye contact with a girl server who came over with menus. We asked her if they had a high chair for my 15 months old son. She said no. We decided eating with him on our laps was not going to be enjoyable so we decided to leave. The only problem is we were rushed because a large party of 25 was expected. Another, issue is there are a lot of bugs around. Immediately seated on a Friday evening, waiter gave us plenty of time to look over the menus. Loud music, intrusive at times. My wife ordered a meat dish, I ordered paella and we were both very pleased. Copious amounts in both dishes, and very tasty. Beef was tender, veggies were great, and a lot of rice tonic in with the thin, tasty gravy. Paella had lots of shrimp and fish bits. Calamari were the garden variety out of the bag rings, but they were tasty because of the seasoning and sauce. The bowl was deceiving- it did not look like a lot of food when served, but the bowl was deep and it was plenty. Very tasty, nice presentation for both dishes. We will go back and try other dishes. I made reservations since it was Valentine's weekend, but they weren't really necessary. We tried the yucca as an appetizer. It didn't have much flavor but the Huancaina sauce was tasty. For dinner I ordered the linguini Huancaina con limon saltado. The steak was cooked perfectly. The vegetables and sauce were so good. There was NO food envy here. After a long day of traveling on the road we came across this place on Yelp and thought let's try it out. One of the best Peruvian restaurants I had a quite a long time. My plate was the pollo saltado super fresh, full of flavors super delicious. The ride was literally the best reminded me of my moms cooking which is the Best in the World!! My other friends had the quarter chicken and they stopped talking at the table once the food came so that means it was yummy!! The staff here is super friendly we had no wait time as soon as we came in they sat us down. All the staff was friendly one didn't stand out more than the other and that's very important. Downtown Roanoke, so expect to be a little bit expensive, and expect the parking situation. Overall I would say the food is good but a bit pricey, service is just okay. Me and my friend ordered lomo saltado, tacu tacu con lomo, ceviche mixto inka, and picarones for dessert. The entrees are not disappointing. But the highlight is actually the dessert. Food is delicious. I have eaten there twice and had beef dishes both times. Both were excellent but the ambience there is a little off. Both times that I have been the music has been very loud, so much so that it is hard to have a conversation at the table. I am not usually sensitive to fragrance, but our server was overly cologned. It was my first time trying Peruvian food. This place is in the heart of Roanoke, and right in the trolley line. We ended up trying the huancaina potatoes, 3 meat chaufa and the linguine verde con bistek. There was an "appetizer" of sorts of a roasted corn kernel. A little try, but flavor was delicious. The huancaina potatoes were ok. I was expecting there to be a bit more spice but otherwise it was creamy, the potatoes were tender and it had good flavor. Chaufa is a almost a fried rice, and we had it with beef, chicken and a plethora of seafood. Flavors were incredible and the rice was great. I'm giving three stars because of my experience here. And I would do two, but it would be a disservice to the chef who did a great job with the meals. The place was empty, and I was the first customer there. I walked in and I don't know if the waitress was caught off guard but she did not have a smile on her face and just looked annoyed (usually I don't mind because I had assumed she had something bad happen a few seconds ago and is probably the left over attitude from it). No, she had that negative service the entire time my friend and I were there and it wasn't pleasant or enjoyable either. I was really impressed with Inca Grill's food, and I definitely plan to return. I started off with the Yuca a la Huancaina, little rolls of fried yuca. It's crunchy on the outside, smooth like mashed potatoes on the inside, and is served with delicious dipping sauces. For my entrée, I got the Tacu Taci com Lomo, a mash of beans and rice served with grilled steak and onions. The tacu tacu tasted pretty similar to how you might imagine it: mashed up beans and rice. On the other hand, the meat was cooked and tender and seasoned to perfection. I really enjoyed this, and will definitely think about getting it again. Overall, Inca Grill seems to be a fairly unique spot in Roanoke, and anyone interested in the menu should definitely give it a try. I know I'll be back. read more

I visited Roanoke one weekend with a group of 4 and we celebrated a birthday at Inka Grill one night. The restaurant was pretty large with tables spread out and safety procedures implemented. The waitstaff at Inka Grill were amazing! They were all super helpful, friendly, and attentive. They definitely made the meal more enjoyable and helped explain a bunch of the menu items to our group. Food: Anticucho - Veal heart skewers served with golden potatoes. This appetizer was really delicious! Everything - the veal, the sauce, the potatoes - were exceptional. Lomo Saltado - I ordered my classic lomo saltado dish which is steak and tomatoes cooked with french fries and peppers/onions and served with white rice. I did enjoy it, but my meat wasn't as tender as I was expecting and my rice was a little hard. Arroz con Mariscos - My partner got this dish and it was jam-packed with seafood. I tried some of it and it was really good! Pollo Entero - One person from our group was shook that he could order a whole chicken with two sides for only $16. Definitely on the lower end of prices I have since for Peruvian chicken which is awesome. The presentation of all the dishes was really nice! I didn't expect it to be so fancy, so it also added to the experience. They gave us a free dessert for the birthday girl which was super nice, but I forgot what dessert it was. They did tell us about all dessert options at the end which all sounded amazing, so I would recommend saving room for dessert here! We unfortunately did not save much room for dessert. This place serves authentic, delicious Peruvian cuisine and has great service, presentation and has good social distancing measures in place. What more could you ask for? read more
