Went to BD on a Thursday night with 2 other couples. None of us had been. Made reservations but wouldn't have been needed. Website states creative cocktails yet they don't serve frozen drinks or Moscow mules. Our waitress didn't know the difference between a whiskey sour and a gin and tonic. One in our party had his heart set on a low country boil that was pictured in one of the websites. He was told they didn't have it. Also the price of scallops over risotto ($49) and a martini ($13.95) is more than I pay at the beach at an upscale restaurant. I will say that all of us thoroughly enjoyed our food. The side salads were nice. After we finished our meal our plates remained on the table until our waitress appeared and ask how we wanted our checks. Never mentioned dessert or coffee, etc. We told her that one of us wanted dessert and another a coffee. When we did receive our checks 2 of them were wrong. Also, was charged for 2 sides when the menu clearly stated 2 sides included. We just paid it and left frustrated. I say all this because management needs to properly train their wait staff and also update the web pages. read more

Four in our dinner party, we were greeted and seated politely and promptly. Waitress was very polite and paid attention to the table at all times. We had Peel and eat shrimp that was excellent. We had a seared tuna special, a filet, a ribeye and scallops for our entrees. All the entrees were delicious and served hot and equally timed. The side salads were large and fresh. Nice quiet area where we were seated, comfortable with an eclectic blend of fishing and deer arts on display. The mural of the lake was very nice to look at. I was just one of the minions but observant... There were 7 of us last night at 5:30 we had our own room which was great because we are cranky and old... Enough... The food was delicious all of us loved the food none of us got the same except me... Would get each dish again.. all were delicious. I had the Fish and Chips it was delicious and more than I could ever eat... Fantastic food, the crab pretzel was an utterly insane idea, but absolutely delicious. The steak as well as the scallops were very simple in nature but seasoned and cooked very well. What surprised us the most was the unbelievably good risotto. If you've had risotto, you know it can be extremely hit or miss. Located in a newer complex within old Moneta area off Booker T. Washington Hwy. There is plenty of on-site parking. We were greeted and seated promptly in the nicely decorated dining area which has some nice private booths along with tables in the open dining room. There is a bar as you first walk in which has televisions for your sports viewing. We were offered fresh bread and butter while we waited for our food. Our server Emily greeted us immediately advising us of their specials and taking a drink order. The menu is well rounded at middle range pricing. I decided to start with onion soup as appetizer and the Rockfish as my main. My wife ordered the Lobster Roll. Unfortunately the main plates arrived before onion soup. As it was the soup had to sit a while anyways because it came out so hot I would not been able to enjoy before main course. The Lobster Roll came loaded with plenty of meat and a side of peas. My Rockfish and brussel sprouts came out in good portions and tasted good. I have to say the brussel sprouts were cooked very well, no crunch. After the soup cooled down, I enjoyed it as well. The soup came with the traditional bread and melted cheese. Unfortunately we did not have room for dessert. Will need to revisit in future. read more

Well, I cannot comment on the food as we did not go for dinner. This is a pretty area with an enormous lake but there are few views of it. We saw, on Yelp, this restaurant states right off the bat that it has lakeside dining! Well, we drove around the building and failed to find even a puddle! Went into one of the shops to look around at their goods and asked about the lakeside dining. The owner cringed a little and said not really, but did say the food was good. After reading some of the reviews here,I'm see they have paintings of the lake. Hem, that is not my definition of lakeside dining so we skipped it. Thought if they are not being honest about something so simple, what could we expect about their food. Found a very food restaurant on the north shore and had a delicious meal. read more

Finally decided to try this new to Moneta restaurant after hearing all the good reviews...they did not disappoint! We shared the golden beet salad for an appetizer...absolutely delicious! Even splitting one (waitress recommended) they were still huge! I had the filet and hubby had the ribeye...cooked to perfection and extremely tasty! I dislike when a chef over seasons steak, this was seasoned perfectly, allowing the flavor of the steak to come through. We did not get dessert as we were too full! The drink special For the night was a chunky monkey...thought I'd give it a try. I was halfway through my drink when the bartender sent another one as he had forgotten to put kahlua in! Must say I didn't miss it, but both drinks were delicious! The decor in the place is wonderful, they've done a superb job of brightening up the place and bringing into current times! Just lovely! We are residents of Smith Mountain Lake and heard good things about Bull Docks. We had dinner there and loved it. The atmosphere is nice and the paintings by local artist, Lisa Floyd, are beautiful. The large mural of the lake is spectacular. We had a nice booth across the impressive bar. Our server, Renae, was wonderful. She greeted us with a smile and was very attentive. The food was delicious. Jim had the Salmon and his wife, Catherine, had Lobster with scalloped potatoes and asparagus. Phil had the Chicken Alfredo and I had the Chicken Chesapeake with a loaded baked potato and asparagus. It was so good. We met the Owner and also the Executive Chef. The great staff made us feel welcomed. We highly recommend dining at Bull Docks. read more

We pulled this restaurant out of the air. Visiting the area for a nephews graduation. Damn glad we did!! Maybe we just got lucky, but everybody at the table agreed that it may be the best restaurant we have ever been in. Six people ate, five separate dishes. Everything including the sides and appetizers were spectacular. I had the shrimp cocktail as an appetizer, beautifully cooked and presented. The porterhouse steak may have been the best restaurant steak I've ever had. Actually cooked medium rare as requested with the garlic butter sauce. Phenomenal. (you have to try the mashed sweet potatoes!) My wife had the Cioppino (spelling??) which I had a taste of which was fantastic. Other dishes at the table were fish and chips, blackened chicken pasta, and fresh scallops. There was not a negative comment meant at all. Service was good. They were very accommodating. Excellent ribeye and phenomenal homemade cheesecake. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of food. Even the asparagus and broccoli was perfectly cooked. Not too raw and not too overcooked. I am pretty picky about my veggies. The steak was so flavorful with the blue cheese. I got the red wine butter; my spouse opted for the garlic butter. Both were exceptionally good. The homemade cheesecake and peach cobbler stole the show. Not at all. sickly sweet-just perfect. The cheesecake achieved perfect creamy vanilla flavor. Went for the prime rib I had seen on Facebook, we're out at 6 pm the host told us. Settled for the mussels ( good) and the beet sales that COULD have been great but was too heavily dressed. Should have sent it back, but instead picked at it and enjoyed the pecans and goat cheese, but the greens were soggy with dressing. Hubby had the fish and chips, okay but nothing to make you go WOW. Loved the price on wine by the bottle . May go back to try the Prime Rib but will call ahead to see if they are out . Service was okay. read more

Our party of four really enjoyed our meal. We started with a shrimp cocktail. The shrimp was large, cooked perfectly, and the cocktail sauce had the perfect hint of horseradish. Two of us had the rainbow trout which was delicious. The other two members enjoyed New York Strip--also delicious. Disappointed. Seemed to have a lot of new inexperienced staff. It was Mother's Day so tried to give them a break. Service was just so-so. Our waitress was nice but when you have to ask for the appetizer plates which were piled in the middle of the table to be removed after you have been to the table 3 times you become so-so. Food however was really disappointing. I ordered Rainbow Trout. What I got was either Steelhead Trout or Salmon. If you are serving Steelhead Trout the menu needs to specify. Menu and bill both said Rainbow. As I said staff was new and I didn't want to make a fuss and just kept it. That was my own fault. Never had such dry fish. Was supposed to have a citrus butter sauce but had nothing. No butter on the baked potato either. They did bring some when asked but why did I have to ask? Husbands steak was blah. Might give them another try on a less busy night as I want restaurants in our area to thrive. I would suggest they hire some bussing help as the waitresses seemed overwhelmed. Waitresses, please always try and make eye contact with all your tables before leaving the room. Keep drinks filled without being asked. Simple but very important things. read more
