Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed that my first Thai food experience in the area didn't come close to the quality of Thai cuisine I'm accustomed to. The service was good, and since we arrived around 4 PM, the restaurant was very quiet and not crowded. However, the food fell short of expectations, and unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to recommend this restaurant based on my experience. We started with the dumplings, which were gummy and not properly seared. The texture was unpleasant, and after trying one, I couldn't continue eating them. For my main course, the vegetables had an unusual flavor, and the noodles were heavily drenched in oil, making the dish difficult to enjoy. I wasn't able to finish it. My partner ordered the duck (no photo available), and while the presentation was nice, he found the texture overly chewy. He ended up pouring extra sauce over the dish just to finish it. On a positive note, both the Thai tea and Thai green tea were very enjoyable. We even ordered refills, which are offered at half price--a nice touch and probably the highlight of our visit. Considering there are not many good Thai options in Roanoke area, this one is not too bad. Prices are high, but that is typical for Thai. The facility is older and somewhat dark interior, but seemed clean and well kept. The service was great, friendly and fast. The food was served fairly quickly and was hot. We have gone here several times. The basics are ok. I ordered #91. Instead of the basic chicken, tomato, onion, and egg...my dish had carrots, celery, broccoli, maybe bok choy? Absolutely no flavor. One cherry tomato. One. The other vegetables were barely flash stir fried. I had to fish for the chicken. I went to the stand where condiments were. Not much to choose from. Soy sauce and duck sauce. The server came back to the table towards the end of our meal. My dish was edible but would never order again. Also, I always order water. While it used to be served here, they now only offer bottled water. Walmart Great Value purified water for $1.50. I was told the tap water doesn't taste good but was offered ice. ?? I mean isn't the ice made with the same tap water that doesn't taste good? I cannot stand a lie. If they need to charge for water fine, but don't try to fool your patrons. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine the existence of a Thai restaurant like this one. It was like finding a needle in a haystack. The building itself was not that impressive, nor the furniture inside, nor the interior design; but it was a clean, cozy place where you felt at home, relaxed and comfortable. The server welcomed me with open arms, and immediately she made me feel at home. After a warm greeting, she started a conversation to find out how familiar I was with Thai Cuisine and to see if I needed help choosing popular items from the menu. The menu, that had around 12 pages of a great selection of entrées, some of which were highlighted by having their photographs next to them, thus helping the customer get a better sense of the dish itself. To start off with, I ordered a Thai Iced Tea. And after stirring it like I was told by the server when she brought it out to me, literally I tasted heaven. It was not only the best tea I've ever had, but one of the best tasted drinks I've ever tasted. So much so, that I thought to myself, I have to come here again, if only just to enjoy this tea again. As appetizer I ordered the Pork Egg Roll. For my meal I ordered the Pad Thai Shrimp and the Pad Ka Paow (pork) Over Rice with Two Fried Eggs. Both dishes tasted so good. Even the fried eggs over the rice were fried to perfection, just how I like them. Take a look at my photographs accompanying my review and you will see what I mean. While I was waiting for my food to come out, that by the way didn't take long, the owner of the restaurant came out to graciously welcome me to her restaurant which I was visiting for the first time, putting her two hands together and bowing her head. She was one of the friendliest and hospitable persons that I have ever met. Being a Friday evening, the restaurant started to fill up with repeat customers, takeout customers, and even native Thais who came in very friendly and greeted the employees like if they were regulars there. For dessert I had the Mango with Sticky Rice, and they also brought me a complimentary plate with Fried Banana and Fried Taro. All this seems like a lot of food but I took the leftovers home to have for tomorrow. I highly recommend this restaurant to all of you who are reading my review. You will have a dining experience like none ever before. You will fall in love with the Thai Cuisine. And I can almost assure you that, like me, you will make this restaurant one of your favorites. read more

I've been coming to this restaurant since it first opened and it's the most consistently amazing Thai food I've ever had. I'm from Roanoke and this used to be a weekly staple for our family but now we live in richmond and there is nothing that compares to city corner 2 (we've tried at least 6 different main stream Thai places and nothing matches it). We love this restaurant so much that I try to stop in and eat it when I'm back in town visiting family which is what brought me and my kids here today. Don't let the appearance of this restaurant fool you, some of the best food I've eaten has been at hole in the wall spots, city corner inclusive. Staff is incredibly friendly and attentive and never leave you hanging too long. Prices are phenomenal (one of the few restaurants left with pre-Covid-ish prices). If you haven't eaten here, it's time. It's really amazing that roanoke is so lucky to have this place here! (Also, if you aren't sure what to order, pad ka paow with ground pork is awesome, I literally can't find this dish the way it's made at city corner anywhere else, if you're sensitive to spicy you may want to ask for a milder spice level) read more

I will admit, I was skeptical to try this place. To call it a dive would be being kind. Driving up to the building, with the windows and door covered, I nearly turned back. I'm glad I didn't. The place is clean and the staff are incredibly friendly and accomodating. The food was great. If you aren't big on spicy food, order yours less spicy than you normally would. I ordered medium spice level and it had great kick to it but could be overwhelming to folks who can't tolerate a lot of heat. The prices are also pretty reasonable. "City Corner 2" seemed to be in the middle of a neighborhood, and I began to get a little nervous if my gps was taking me to the right location....but we arrived and it was there just where it said it would be. We picked up our 4 dishes and spring rolls, and the five of us who partook in this heavenly Thai feast were SO crazy happy over EVERY dish. This family owned restaurant has THE BEST Thai food that I've eaten in Virginia. Service is friendly and efficient, they answer any questions you have about the food and at the end of our meal the chef even came out to the table to be sure we liked everything. We had gone pre-pandemic but hadn't been in a few years. They used their down time to update the dining space a bit. So glad we moved across town so that we can now make this a regular stop! At first glance, the staff is very friendly and super gracious. Reminds me of the wonderful Thai people I met in Thailand. Ample parking but it's not where or what you're expect outside. It's in the middle of nowhere on a residential area turning into a city street. I thought it was a gas station til I looked closely. There were some tables outside but it's a tad too cold to do that. Inside is a hole in the wall. You can tell it is old but they're clean. Everyone greeted me as soon as I walked in and were very enthusiastic to recommend dishes. I love a good Tom yum so I had to try it out. I also got the shrimp pad kee mow. There's something about the flat noodles that make me salivate in anticipation. The portions weren't very big. It's a bit on the pricier side compared to portion. The pad mee mow was a little too sweet for my presence but it was good. Plenty of shrimp in the dish. I got it at a Thai hot 10 and it was pretty spot on. The Tom yum came at maybe a regular despite my asking for it to be Thai hot. The rice was hard and flavorless. I don't think it was jasmine rice but it was acceptable. I got a pineapple fried rice to go and wasn't too thrilled with that. The rice was too hard and it had too much curry in it. It's one of my fav Thai dishes but I don't think I would order that again. The rice dishes are overpriced for the amount of food given. Most places give you a huge plate full. That wasn't the case here. I have a photo of the friend rice but it could be misleading. There were 4 bites taken out of that container for reference. I give the food a 3.5/5 and the experience a solid 4. If the Tom yum was hotter, I would give that a 4/5. It was nice and aromatic. I prefer it when they don't use the cheap white mushrooms but I understand cutting back on food cost. The downer was seeing how stained the soup spoons and bowls were. You can tell everything is old and I would honestly feel better if they replaced them because they aren't too appetizing. The friendly staff is what makes this place nice. It's authentic Thai food. They had a busy dining room even on a cold Sunday evening. There were 10 cars in the lot when I left. Most were regulars and they didn't need a menu. Very good Thai food. Glad a friend introduced this to me, I never would've found it otherwise. The name doesn't indicate what's in store, nor does the appearance of the building or dining room. To be blunt, this is a bit of a dive, but the food really makes up for it. We started with appetizers - dumplings, fried fish cake, and Isaan sausage. All were well executed, especially the sausage. For mains we split green chicken curry, and chicken larb. Both were excellent, and the larb had some good heat to it. My dining companion bit into what she thought was a jalapeño, only to discover the hard way that Thai chilies are a good deal hotter. This is the type of place I love, and based on how busy it was, plenty of folks agree. Good food and service, and who cares about the appearance. read more

The dumplings were amazing but mostly because of the sauce which is incredible. The pad Thai was perfect and the chicken satay was great as well. Their peanut sauce is thicker than most that I have had but really good and they serve the satay with little toast points, perfect for smearing some sauce on!! Was searching for Thai food in the area. I got a Seafood soup with shrimp, vegetables, crab and calamari. The broth was very flavorful and the lemongrass and lime were what I had been craving in the broth. Fresh and hot, I would eat here again and again. City Corner 2, with a very strange name, has delicious Thai food. We are very lucky to be able to find this in Roanoke. They are consistent and they offer a great selection of Thai items. Also, unlike so many other Asian restaurants in Roanoke, they offer just one type of food (THAI!). We've found the other restaurants in the area offer bland mixes of Japanese + Chinese + Thai + . That rarely means it's an authentic or good experience with real flavors. We've found the multi-type of food places to be very, very bland and over-MSG'd. However, that is absolutely not the case with City Corner 2. Their food is light, delightful and very much in line with the best of American Thai food all over. We would put City Corner 2 up against other Thai restaurants across the country (and we have tried them coast to coast). We had thai iced tea and it was great - not too sweet and with the perfect amount of tea. The drunken noodles were also delightful and had a lovely kick to them that would catch you a bit off guard. Loved them. The pad thai was everything you expect in a pad thai - it had a nice edge to it as well and the vegetables (bean sprouts, carrots) on top were crunchy as they should be. This place did hide in the corner and its little parking lot had some debris, be cautious! The restaurant decorations were old with Thai style. I believe they are serving traditional Thai food however the cuisines are not so well done as many reviewers here may have mentioned. We ordered the chicken satay for the kids, which was not bad. Chicken Pad Thai and pineapple fried rice were average mainly because the chicken was not juicy. The soup was a disappointment and please avoid. The dessert, sticky rice with mango, which was not on the menu but is available on any other Thai restaurant, was prepared in a very casual and sloppy way. Love this food! Awesome Coconut chicken soup chocked full with fresh flavor deepening ginger and lemongrass, ample fresh mushrooms, tomatoes, onions to keeps the chicken company. Very hearty, especially when you add the rice served with it. The Pad Thai is also amazing, although a tad bit sweeter than I am used to. Still excellent! And the spicy eggplant and chicken had a deep rich flavor like no other. Mango salad fresh and crunchy and the dumplings tasty. The food is authentic Thai just like the staff. Love this place.
