This is a distinctive block-y looking building in an area without a ton of food. It is often busy. They are not open late or on weekends and seemingly cater to the other people who work in the area. Ordering takeout got me quick and ready food. The option for a tofu banh mi was delicious and full of fresh tastes. A spring roll that came with it was fine but didn't have anything special. A Thai tea was thankfully not overly sweet. Both my wife and I, being fans of Vietnamese food, ordered the touted "The Beast" sandwich and a fried egg roll. The egg roll was greasy and tasteless, and the typical packaged duck sauce didn't help. "The Beast" sandwich was loaded with fresh vegetables, and obviously had meat (we saw it), but the combination of ingredients on the sandwich tasted like a bland, meatless, vegetable sub with no discernable sauce. Overall, the visit was a total disappointment. While dining, we could smell the bowls of pho being served, and that might be worth a return trip. read more

For some time now I had been curious to find out what this little old, cleaned and renovated, white house, on the corner of Williamson Road and Pocahontas, turned Vietnamese restaurant, had to offer. Noticing the continues influx of people going in and coming out with bags of Takeout food, something told me it must have some good food and reasonable prices. So today I decided to drop in for an early dinner. First of all, this old brick small house turned restaurant was simply renovated by cleaning it very well and giving it a good paint with interesting colors, simple tile floors and fake ceiling, and new glass door, but kept the old windows that painted black give the place character. The three little dining room spaces are very small and humbly decorated with simply yet comfortable furniture mostly consisting of tables and chairs. You arrive through the door and encounter an order counter window with a modern computer and a very friendly Vietnamese man with a big smile as he comes out from the back to take your order. He might not know too much English but his wonderful positive attitude immediately wins you over and makes you feel right at home in this small and cozy place. There is an enlarged menu on the wall for one to read as well as a wall plastic rack with small menu to take home. I confess that I am no expert in Vietnamese food but I do like a good sub. So with this in mind I ordered a BBQ Pork Banh Mi (Vietnamese Sub) with no Jalapeños, a Fried Egg Roll, a Fresh Pork Spring Roll with Peanut Sauce, and a Sesame Ball. To drink I ordered a Sweet Iced Tea. I paid with a credit card and was asked to take a seat and that my food would be brought to me. I sat in a small table next to one of the front windows. As I waited several people came to order to go and a few stayed to eat in. The food was brought to me by an Hispanic lady and arranged on my table. The BBQ Pork Viet Sub tasted amazing. Starting from the fresh and crispy baguette, to the nicely cooked pork, and fresh ingredients inside. The Spring Roll tasted refreshing with fresh ingredients as well, and the Egg Roll as well. The Sesame Ball however seemed to have been cooked ahead of time and was not as soft and fresh as I had been expecting. Overall, it was a great dinner at an affordable and reasonable price. And definitely I recommend this place and will certainly be back for more. The bread was crunchy on the outside, and the vegetables were piled high. The sandwich was a little small, but for that price, it was still a great value. The vegetable dumplings were amazing! Perfectly fried, flavorful sauce, and filled with the good veggies. Often times, veggie dumplings are filled with cheaper filler ingredients like cabbage, but not these. Viet Sub is quite the excellent ma and pa style Vietnamese restaurant! I certainly am glad we took the extra 2-mile trek off the interstate when passing through on our way to Asheville, NC... and I'd gladly drive those extra miles again the next time I'm passing through. On this visit, we tried the Pork Bahn Mi, the Pork Vermicelli Bowl (with spring roll), and the Fresh Spring Roll (with Shrimp). All were yummy and out of this world. I would highly recommended any of these. The locals sure seem to know how good this place is, as the pickup and new order lines were getting slammed as we were finishing up our meal. Viet Sub is currently practicing covid safety standards, but it is a small space... so be prepared to wait outside the door or take your food to go. The best Vietnamese place in Roanoke by far! We ordered a Thai tea, dumplings, 2 small pho, the beast banh mi, and the rice vermicelli - all of which were delicious. The dumplings were perfectly seasoned and the dipping sauce that came with it was *chefs kiss*. The pho was so much for a small order and I am not complaining about that! There was so much meat and noodles packed in that bowl I had to take half of it to go. The rice vermicelli was my personal favorite- the fresh pickled veggies over cold rice noodles and a bed of lettuce + the fish sauce mixture you dump in is so refreshing and leaves you full but feeling great! The Beast was my husband's personal favorite and he orders it all the time. The sandwich is stuffed with meats and veggies so if you love spice, throw some sriracha on it and call it a day! The staff is so kind and service is quick! There isn't too much parking or seating in the restaurant so be aware that they do get busy so you might have to wait for a table or do what we've done in the past and just eat it in your car. We went here for our trip to Virginia Tech, stayed in Salem. We got 2 LG beef phos and shrimp spring roll. The service off the bat was amazing, the owner(assuming) was very nice! The food was good, I don't say great because I have had better pho in Richmond where we're from. But it wasn't horrible. It needs a touch more flavor but it's good to finish eating it. The beef they use is definitely not the beef most pho places use, this beef was more like regular beef sliced by hand. My guess is they don't serve brisket as is much too expensive to buy. The shrimp roll was as expected but they only give you one sadly. Now the portions are small for a large, but if you're a small person like me, you'll get full. But my boyfriend on the other hand left feeling unsatisfied. The dining experience was great. We went on a Monday and the place was empty. The ambiance was welcoming.
