We decided to stop in Roanoke in the middle of a long road trip. Alexander's ended up being a top highlight of our entire trip! From the service to the food, everything was top notch. The ambiance is sophisticated and relaxing with staff working as a team to make sure you enjoy every aspect of your visit. Every bite we took was delicious and you could tell was prepared with a high level of skill and passion. If you are in Roanoke, dinner at Alexander's is a must!

We had an excellent meal and service at Alexander's. We had the rabbit, lamb porterhouse and duck. Every dish was amazing. Service was excellent too!

We came here to celebrate a special occasion. The interior is dimly lit, which adds to the fancy atmosphere. Everything is clean and tidy. Two people in my party ordered cocktails: the Seelbach and the Side Car. I noticed that the menu only has a small selection which made it hard to choose what I wanted because I felt like there weren't many options that stood out to me, but apparently the menu changes twice weekly, so that's interesting. When we were ready to order, one person in my party was going to order for their parents because their parents did not speak English. Our server said okay, but she would like to start with the ladies' orders first. That was a little off-putting, but still fine. I ordered the scallops with Thai brown butter and then asked me if I wanted any appetizers. That took me by surprise because I'm used to getting appetizers for the table, but it wasn't a big deal. Then the server went to my friend's mother and waited for her to order, despite the fact that he had just said he would order for his parents. He ordered the grilled filet of beef with the butter for both of his parents and then the grilled filet of beef with pesto for himself. My two other friends also ordered the grilled beef with butter and one BBQ shrimp for two (but it's for the table). We snacked on the bread from the breadbasket, but I was disappointed with the fact that the bread was cold instead of being warm. The salads that came with our entrees arrived. I really liked the vinaigrette and the black-eyed peas in the salad. The small croutons in the salad were cute and I preferred the small size as compared to the larger ones, but I thought they were too buttery. Not long after we finished the salad, our entrees arrived and we were also given a little croissant. However, I had noticed that my friends' cocktails nor the appetizer did not arrive yet. They mentioned it to the server and she apologized. When she read their order back to them, it appears that she had mixed our order up and explained to us that they were manually giving the staff the orders because the machine was down. We felt bad that she was so flustered and apologetic, so we assured her that it was fine and we can wait. My scallops were good, but the Asian influence such as the fried rice noodles and the seaweed pieces didn't really do anything for me and I didn't really taste what made the Thai brown butter either. I did like the small side of mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables. Everyone liked their steak except my friend who ordered the steak with pesto. They thought the pesto was too overpowering. The cocktails came during the meal and the appetizer came towards the end when everyone was finished eating their entrees. My friends like their cocktails. The server asked if we wanted more bread because everyone's favorite part is dipping bread into the BBQ shrimp's sauce, so we agreed to one more basket of bread. The BBQ shrimp was just grilled shrimp with a buttery sauce. I think I was expecting shrimp with some housemade BBQ sauce, but in hindsight, that doesn't seem to make any sense. It's a good dish though, but everyone was too full to enjoy it. Our server got us our check and told us that she took the cocktails off the receipt because of the delay with the cocktails and the appetizer. It was so nice of her and I felt so bad because she was clearly flustered from the incident. We also got some salted chocolates and almond slices complimentary which were good. Overall, it was a good experience and I would come back again.

We wanted to have a nice dinner out while visiting from San Francisco. Alexander's showed up on our search and it was a solid choice. I had the filet and it was cooked perfectly to a nice medium rare that I ordered. The side of vegetables was also good. My only note is I wish the service was quicker as there were a couple of times we wanted to order something else and the wait was just a little too long - but this was probably the result of covid - they seemed to only have a couple of waitstaff for the whole restaurant. The profiteroles were the winning desserts of the night.

Alexander's is an elegant and intimate restaurant. It has an understated yet refined decor. Food and service are superb...probably best in Roanoke (besides my mom's). Their menu changes often and have a good selection of wines. Everything we had was wonderful. See all my pics. We started with a couple of deconstructed CA rolls and ahi tuna. They where artistically presented and were delicious. I had a center cut pork chop with double seasonal veggies (instead of mash potatoes). It's a thick cut like Houstons and was perfectly prepared. Others at the table had rack of lamb, seared scallops, filet mignon and shrimp and crawfish and Tasso penne. Everyone ate all their food! Oh their butter - it is out of this world. I don't eat much bread but I had to eat it just to have the butter - yup it's that good. This is a good place for business, celebrate special occasions and well just a great meal. Service is really on par with the Ritz with the warmth that a few places master. You definitely get your dollars worth here.

Amazing!!! We went here for our anniversary on a Tuesday night. Very romantic atmosphere, great waitstaff, barely anyone in around 6:30pm. Our entrees came with bread and salad, we ordered cocktails (very good - not cheap or sugary by any means), food tasted fresh and quality and worth every penny. We will DEF be going back!!!

After having been selected as number 4 of Yelp's Top 50 most prolific Elites of 2025, a year when I also was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Photographer of the Year Award at their Yelpies 2025 Award Ceremony, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, and where last year I was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Yelper of the Year Award, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to return to those special ones, that have made a difference in my life and highlight them, for the benefit of the public, so they too can have an opportunity to appreciate the qualities of a one-of-a-kind fine dining experience. And Bernard's Gastropub & Eatery in Downtown Roanoke, is a perfect example. Bernard's was born out of the love of two culinary aficionados turned professionals that in someway have managed to create a restaurant with an environment that transmits this intimate love to the hearts of their customers through the attention to detail in its extraordinary customer service and amazing culinary masterpieces. Today, I felt like dining at this restaurant, which I admire for its consistency in always far exceeding my high expectations of what a fine-dining restaurant should be all about. Not knowing if they would have a table for me at this late time on a Saturday early evening, I drove in my pearl white Lexus to the nearest private parking lot and gave them a call to inquire as if they could give me a reservation for the next ten minutes. A gentleman, who later I found out was named Matthew, and would be my server, answered the phone with a very polite and welcoming voice; answering my question of what was the special dish of the day and to come on down, that my reservation was assured. As soon as I arrived to the small, very elegant foyer in front of the Host's station, he came out to greet me and instantly recognized who I was. My only request was that he give me a low table because at my age seating at a high table was a bit uncomfortable. He went back to see what he could find and ended setting me up with what I consider one of the best tables of the house, and I was so appreciative of his last minute accommodation. The menu was already setup on my table. He poured water from a special bottle into my water glass and asked if I wanted something else to drink. I asked for a Mocktail and since he also was a bartender, he prepared me one of the best mocktails I've ever had. To dine, I started out with their Mussels Carbonara appetizer, which came in a bacon parmesan cream sauce that was simply amazing, and served with toast points. As my main entrée I had the Dinner Special of the Night, the Seafood Trio. It had a delicious, giant size crab cake in the middle, scallops, and shrimps, with parmesan risotto sautéed heirloom tomato, spinach, and nice size asparagus, with a burre blanc sauce. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the high-quality of their food and magnificent ambiance of the place. Everything was so delicious that only one word could ever describe them: priceless! For dessert I had their very famous Butterscotch Banana Pudding, which the chef makes at the moment ordered. It looked spectacular and tasted amazingly delicious: a culinary work of art. What a great way for the Gran Finale of an extraordinary dining experience!

Going back to this restaurant after the great honor that I had received from Yelp, made me recall the first time that I dined here. I invite you that after reading this review, you go back and read that one, and view my photographs accompanying it, because it's one of which I am most proud of, and an experience that I will never forget and forever cherish. I arrived at the restaurant on time at five o'clock sharp and as I waited for them to open I had an opportunity to meet and chat with a couple who had been loyal customers of this restaurant for years since it first opened. They, as well as I, were aware of the beautiful location of the restaurant on one of the most exclusive neighborhoods of Roanoke. As soon as the doors opened, I allowed them to enter first and then when the host came back she gave me a warm and friendly greeting, welcoming me back, and took me to an ideal table, where I had a perfect view of the entire restaurant, from their open kitchen, to their bar, to the entire dining room and entrance, allowing me to capture in photographs the real feel of the ambiance of this cozy, yet elegant, upscale Southern, New-American restaurant known for its scratch-made dishes using locally-sourced, seasonal ingredients, including house-cured meats and pickled vegetables, as well as very creative cocktails. Shortly after I was seated, my delightful server Caroline arrived, and after a warm greeting took my order. To drink I order their Strawberry Fields Forever Mocktail. As appetizer I ordered a half dozen Oysters together with their famous Oyster Wraps. And as my main entrée, the Painted Hills Filet, cooked medium-rare. All the staff seemed so happy to see me and the manager came by to say hello and congratulate me for my outstanding Yelp accomplishment of 2025. My excellent server made sure that my order was well-paced, came by at the appropriate times to fill my glass with water and see if all was to my liking. Everything tasted amazingly delicious. Starting from the unique taste of my creative mocktail, to my flavorful appetizer, to my exquisite Filet main entrée that was so tender and cooked just right. The chefs in this fine dining restaurant are amazing and the quality of their meats is top notch. For dessert I had one of my favorite desserts, since I first had it there, their Dark Chocolate Panna Cotta. This dessert is absolutely mouthwatering. What an extraordinary dining experience I once again had there. Fine dining at its best. For those very special occasions, I highly recommend this restaurant. Amber provided excellent customer service but her shift ended before I had began my meal, so I was assigned another young gentleman server by the name of Zeke, who also did an awesome job in providing me with an exceptional customer service. The Filet was a bit small for 8oz but it was very tender and cooked to perfection, medium rare, as requested. Zeke forgot to hand me the steak knife, but the manager quickly noticed and immediately brought one to me. So this was not at all an inconvenience to me. For dessert I had a Crème Brûlée. This was the largest size one that I had ever had. And I enjoyed it to the last spoonful. I highly recommend this restaurant for a wonderful fine dining experience with exceptional customer service.

Lowell, the Maitre d' (French for 'master of the house'), known as the dining room manager, with primary responsibility of ensuring that guests are satisfied, greeted me with a warm welcome and took me to my favorite table which I had requested when I made my reservation. There I was able to enjoy my meal while listening to the live Jazz Trio Entertainment, who among other songs, graciously played the Aladdin theme song which they remembered I had requested they play last time I had dined here. Soon after I was seated at my table, my server Brittany came by and gave me a warm welcome. She helped me choose the Chai Blossom Mocktail to drink, and not long after, one of the assistant servers delivered a basket of nice fresh bread with a little bowl of soft whipped butter. To me, the quality of the bread and butter of a restaurant is one of those little things that make the big difference in the unique dining experience. The drink tasted just wonderful, and as I was enjoying it my server surprised me with a tiny hors d'oeuvre called Amuse Bouche, explaining what it was. I can only remember that the taste was exceptional. I had the Oysters Rockefeller as appetizer and the char-grilled Filet Mignon medium rare as my main entrée. Everything was prepared and cooked to perfection and with a wonderful presentation. For dessert I had their special Pistachio Crème Brûlée. It tasted amazing, and reminded me of the Dubai Chocolate, one of my favorites at the moment. And to finish off the evening, the maitre d' Lowell, surprised us all by singing the song "What a Wonderful Word", as the Jazz Trio played along. Louis Armstrong would have been proud of his rendition. What a grand finale to conclude what was an extraordinary dining experience!

We had an 8 PM reservation on a Saturday night and it seems like some Saturdays they have live music. The band was really good but it was pretty loud and since later reservations are seated closer to the band, we had to wait a bit for a table that wasn't so close. The front staff was super nice and accommodating about that though which I appreciated. As for the food, I wouldn't recommend the oysters Rockefeller. it was really salty and not the best I've had. The rest of the meal was fine but I felt like the overall dinner experience was rushed. I was also a little disappointed that nothing was done for my husband's birthday. There were several other birthdays in the room and we saw that some people were brought something special but we didn't get anything at all which was frustrating. I'd say if you plan on going maybe avoid the later reservations so you don't feel rushed at the end of the night. The atmosphere is pretty and the staff is kind but for a birthday celebration this fell a bit short of what I was hoping for.
