This year I chose this restaurant above all others to celebrate my birthday, and I wasn't disappointed. It highly went beyond the highest of my expectations, and delivered an extraordinary dining experience. After making an appointment for five o'clock and mentioning that I would be celebrating my birthday there on that day, I wondered how it would be, for everytime I have dined there, their attention to detail has been superb, and their cuisine has been exquisite. The day finally arrived and I was standing by the door at five minutes to the hour. Inside I could see through their large front windows the movement of all the staff getting ready for the opening of the restaurant. At exactly five o'clock, the hostess approached and opened the door for me to enter. She warmly greeted me and apologized for not being able to give me the table I requested because they needed it to unite with other tables for a large group they would be having. But they had prepared another one in front of the open kitchen for me, where I would be able to observe the Chef and other cooks preparing my food. It was definitely to my satisfaction, and when she took me there I was very impressed with the small detail on the table of a Happy Birthday card from the restaurant signed by everyone there and suspended by a little stand. Things like that are priceless in my eyes. Shortly afterwards, my friendly and efficient server Ivy, came by, wished me a Happy Birthday and took my order. To drink I had my favorite Mocktail there, the Butterfly Kisses. As appetizer I ordered the Oyster Wraps. And for my main entrée, the Hanger Steak, my favorite item in their menu and that of all the other restaurants around the area. My server did an excellent job of bringing out my ordered items in a well-paced manner. I noticed the small but significant detail that the chef had of serving me a slightly larger amount of Hanger Steak than the usual, and this meant more to me than any of the other complimentary desserts which are given in most other restaurants on your birthday. While The River and Rail has many things going for it: great location, adorable atmosphere, fancy and delicious cocktails and delicious food, one thing they don't have going for them is their ability to stay true to their operating hours. My friend and I walked in at 9 o'clock EXACTLY on a Thursday night to have a drink. The sign on the door said they were open until 10:00. There were 4 or 5 tables seated, enjoying dinner and cocktails. 5 or 6 people at the bar. There was no one to start with at the actual hostess stand and servers saw us standing at the door but did not approach us even though there was an hour left on their operating time. So we walked directly to the bar and sat down. We had just eaten at Fork in the Alley so all we wanted was one drink and we figured an hour was plenty of time to get that done. The first thing the bartender said to us was "The kitchen is closed." Not "hello" or "Hey what can I get you?" but the kitchen is closed. I said "oh I'm sorry I thought you closed at 10:00." He said "well, that's up for debate we were actually discussing that right now. We're basically closed but you can have a drink because it's not like the rest of these people are going anywhere." What do you mean that's up for discussion? Your hours say you're open till 10 o'clock, it's 9 o'clock I have an hour to eat and have drinks! The other bartender, or perhaps he was only a bar back, gave us a very disapproving look. I get it, I work in the food service industry. I'm a server at a 4 diamond restaurant, and I hate when people walk in minutes before we close and want to sit down. But if we post that we're open until 10 and you walk in at 9:45 I'm going to serve you and treat you like anyone else that walked in at 6:00 because it's your tips that pay my bills and put food on my table. It's definitely not the hourly wage I get from my employer! And as a server I never walk into a restaurant with less than 30 minutes to close. And it's more like an hour if I'm looking to eat a meal. I know you want to go home. When it's the end of the night and I'm at work, so do I! But there's an hour left and I wanted one drink. That's it! We continued to get disappointed looks from a few other employees even though we weren't the last people in the place. I told my friend (it's 9:45 at this point) that we obviously need to go since servers are standing around looking at us like we've got the plague. We paid our bill and promptly left. Two couples still at the bar. It's 9:59 right now as I'm writing this at home (you're still technically open btw) but I left feeling like I had stayed hours past your closing time. It's a real shame because we really enjoyed our drinks! They were super yummy! And I'm always getting asked by guests where's a good place for a late night cocktail and I used to recommend The River and Rail right along with Lucky's because we had a shuttle that would take guests out, but after tonight I won't be doing that anymore. Because there's nothing worse than feeling unwelcome at a restaurant that is still open. read more

We had a reservation and were promptly seated, we were celebrating our anniversary and appreciated the card & drinks on the house. Our server, Caroline, was wonderful. We tried the pickle jar and cornbread appetizers. We had a salad and the hanger steak which were both delicious. The Jefferson airplane drink was also a hit. Yes, the restaurant is loud, but overall a cozy atmosphere. The prices were reasonable and we were happy to try a new spot on our weekend trip to Roanoke. read more

The River and Rail is a small establishment so I'd recommend making a reservation no matter the size of the party or the day. The food comes out fairly quick, the menu is concentrated while still offering a large variety of options. The cocktails are good, though neither of us ordered from the cocktail menu, they have a full bar so you can order whatever you please. Service could be a little more vocal/communicative but it seems staff is perhaps limited? It was good but there's room for moderate improvement for sure. The Chicken Liver Mousse was absolutely amazing and I'd return again and again specifically for this dish (go ahead and order extra bread to come with it)!! read more

We had a very nice dinner here. They have a great outdoor patio that is dog friendly and the vibe is upscale. My beet salad had a lovely yogurt dressing and fresh herbs. My NC shrimp dish was fine but nothing memorable. My husband's pork was ok but a bit chewy. The collard greens were good but a tad spicey. Had dinner with a friend here recently, reservations are necessary most nights. I was ahead of my friend a minute or two and was seated promptly walking in, the place was already busy. My friend arrived shortly and our server appeared within moments of that. Water bottle in hand was served with our menus and a couple short glasses. The interior is open, country casual. Tables well spaced out, with seating also at the bar. Braised Octopus and the Pimento Cheese and Toast appetizers. The pimento with pickled veggies and toasted sour dough was quite good, freshly made and a great shareable plate. The braised octopus well presented and cooked nicely, solid flavors and textures with charred cucumber and cherry tomatoes with pistachios, again more than enough to share with an interesting mediterrean twist. I opted for the Heirloom tomato salad and it was simply delicious, maybe my favorite of the night? For my entree, the Monkfish filet, wrapped in Benton's country Ham sliced paper thin, and cooked beautifully. Served with roasted leeks, braised white beans, arugula over an almond romesco and a chile vinaigrette. Simply delicious. The R&R Banana pudding was also a cool twist on a classic dessert, with the coconut jalepeno sorbet. The only tick for me was the wine. At a certain price point the bottle should NOT be a screw top period. I ordered their top price point Pinot Noir from Austrailia, at $76 bucks, it was a screw top. This was a complete wow moment when it was presented at the table, the wine was okay maybe even good but the whole "unscrewing the cap" made the whole getting a nice bottle of wine for the evening to go with a nice dinner like a let down. I really had a great date night at river and rail. I made a reservation just in case and I'm glad I did. The drinks there were amazing and our waiter was very nice as well. The food that I ordered which included the fried oyster kimchi lettuce wrap was delicious! The vibe of the restaurant was also very cozy. Let's talk about the elephant in the restaurant. The A/C was non-existent. It was almost as hot inside as it was outside. And it was 100 July 3 2026. An employee told us that the owner refuses to repair the A/C. Don't know if they meant the owner of the business or the building. It happens every summer from what the employee says. Felt bad for the whole staff. Now, the good. They have excellent mixed drinks, the blackened catfish we had was outstanding, along with the jar of pickles. Compliments to the chef and his staff to make such a wonderful meal in those conditions. We enjoy going here, but we will no longer go in the summertime. Unless they fix the A/C. read more

What a great find. We stopped in Roanoke for the night along our travels. The menu is small, which I love. For starters, we ordered the fried corn bread and an oyster dish which was a fried oyster wrapped in tender lettuce with kimchi, radish, and a special sauce. It was delicious!! We have been loyal diners at River and Rail for several years and have always had a wonderful dining experience. Tonight, sadly, was very disappointing. First of all, there were only four entree options offered on the menu, none of which were overly appealing. I wish there were other steak options besides hangar steak. The catfish I chose was okay, but not what I really wanted. We saw some people eating burgers and fries which was not on the menu! When we inquired of our waitress as to how those diners were able to order burgers we were told that they offered a select number of burgers, but that they had run out. When we asked how you would be able to order them if they weren't listed on the menu, we were told you just have to be in on the know. I have never been to a restaurant where you are able to order an item not listed on the menu and was put off by the catty answer to our inquiry. I would have ordered a burger since none of the limited entrees were appealing to me. The dessert offerings were limited to three items: banana pudding, chocolate panna cotta and three scoops of ice cream. I've had the panna cotta before and don't care for the dulce de leche added to it and had decided on the ice cream and when we asked what were the featured flavors for the evening we were told that they were having freezer issues so that option was not available. We ended up going out for ice cream elsewhere after dinner. Whenever I visit from out of town and I get together with my old friends River and Rail has been our destination restaurant for over ten years. But after tonight's experience, we decided that the next time we get together it will be at a different restaurant. The limited number of entrees and the addition of alternates that only certain people "in the know" are aware of was a real game changer and not in a positive way. I would have expected River and Rail to be better than this. If burgers are a dinner option then they should be on the menu. Customers shouldn't be expected to ask what additional entrees are available that aren't included on the menu. Not the quality service I would expect of a restaurant of this stature. read more

I guess the food may good but I wouldn't know. I was traveling from Asheville back to NYC and from the reviews this seemed to ba a standout. I arrived at 8:32p on a Tuesday night. A few people we eating at tables and one other person at the bar finishing their dinner. I sat at the bar after driving for 5 hours and the bartender gave me a menu then said let me make sure the kitchen is still open, mind you it's an open kitchen and I could see the cooks in there working. Surely at 8:32p this isn't a problem. He came back to say yeaaa the kitchen is closed- sorry. I was like, what, are you kidding! When did it close? He said yea it's slow, they closed at 8:30p- I said 2 min ago!? Well I would think if it is slow the owners would love someone coming in to spend money AND it was just me... The food gave my mother food poisoning with a very undercooked steak. It was still mooing. Woke up at four in the morning to her having diarrhea and a bad case of the pukes. So, not to not is the food overpriced but it also makes you sick. Our waitress was even high as a kite and doing her best Captain Jack Sparrow impression every time she talked to us and she was hard to understand. Do not recommend. This was by far the best dinner experience I had during a visit to Roanoke! The restaurant is cozy with an open kitchen, the staff were incredible, and the food was absolutely amazing. For appetizers we had the oysters, beet salad, and jar of pickles. The chow chow on the oysters was SO good, I was actually hesitant to try raw oysters for the first time but they ended up being a highlight of the meal. The beet salad was also delicious as well as the jar of pickles if you enjoy super vinegary things like I do. For entrees we had the sea bass and steak tenderloin. Can't even lie- one of the best steaks I've ever tried. It was perfectly cooked and so flavorful. Even the side veggies were incredible. The sea bass was also perfectly crispy and the sauce on it was so tasty as well. With everything being so amazing of course we had to try dessert too. We ordered the banana pudding and the chocolate panna cotta. The banana pudding is not traditional at all but if you like unique flavor combinations this is definitely one to try. The coconut jalapeño sorbet is like nothing I've ever tried before, and loved the cornbread crumbs too. The panna cotta was so rich, chocolatey, and delicious, and could definitely be shared between two people as it was a pretty large portion. Best meal I've had in years and I'm someone who travels and eats at a lot of great places. My partner and I had some delicious cocktails (great bourbon selection) and enjoyed the Peking Duck and Hanger Steak for dinner. Both cooked to perfection and the accompanying vegetables were good enough to have been a meal on their own. Capped it all off with their famous Banana Pudding which is not like grandmas but is even better!! A jalapeno infused ice cream on top of a toasted cornbread crumble on top of a banana pudding custard was just pure perfection. Hello I ate for the first time 8 years ago, again for my anniversary and when my daughter was stationed in Korea. All was good, service five stars food as well. This week worse experience ever both with reluctant service and food I wouldn't feed my dog. Actually my daughter did give her bland chicken breast that's because there were no seasoning or taste to effect my dog's digestion. My wife had the hanger steak no flavor and under cooked and got sick later. I had the mussels with extra bread to suck up the dishwater favored liquid-although the bread was good. So sad. Bottom Line: High quality food and attentive staff. I'm really glad that I discovered The River and Rail thanks to Yelp while staying the night in Roanoke. Dining at The River and Rail is more like an experience than dinner given their crafty cocktails and interesting Southern-inspired menu. My husband and I stated with cocktails. He got the sweet and tropical inspired High Wide & Handsome which went down very smoothly but left him a little tipsy. I ordered the Model Citizen which was very much a sipping drink that I nursed throughout the evening. It is all booze but our server warned me that it was strong. For dinner we were very curious about the menu so we tried a lot of stuff - the jar of pickles, the pimento cheese and toast, the beef ribs special, the grilled broccoli and the dry aged ribeye. It was all really tasty and beautiful. Never in my life did I think that pickled vegetables could be a work of art but they surely were. And the beef ribs were also perfectly trimmed and mouth watering. Also perfect was the service. Everyone was friendly, attentive and taking proper COVID precautions. We sat relatively close to the door so I had a good amount of time to witness all of the hostesses interactions with the dine in customers and customers getting orders to go. My wife and I dined there while we were on vacation in the Roanoke area. The drinks, food, atmosphere, and service were all top notch. It was one of the best dining experiences we've ever had in our travels across the country. The hospitality of their staff was amazing! (Special thanks to Luke and Melissa who were wonderful to us! They treated us like VIPs even though we were just visiting from out of town.) It truly set them apart from other restaurants we've visited. Our first visit was so good, we decided to eat there again while we were in town. If I'm ever within 100 miles of Roanoke in the future, I'll definitely stop in for dinner. We went here due to reviews I read. We were not impressed. Appetiser of pimiento cheese was highlight of the meal. Our food took over an hour to get and the worst part was the food was mediocre. For the price point ($30-$40 per entree) and such a small selection we expected each dish to be flavorful and "perfected" by the restaurant, but we both felt out dishes were just "alright". Come here for upstanding food and service. The dishes are beautifully plated, colorful, and unique. My only qualm with the food is the whole "upscale bar food" trend that they have fallen into - when I go to a fancy restaurant I don't really want to see "pork rinds" on the menu. However, the main items are on the menu are great quality. I am a vegetarian and didn't have many options on the real menu, so I called ahead to let them know and they were happy to accommodate. The server asked me what ingredients on the menu (that were a part of other dishes) sounded appealing to me and the chef created a custom dish for me. It was outstanding. Everything seemed to be high quality. Our server was super friendly and informative. She was attentive and responsive as well. We ordered some cocktails for dessert and enjoyed them as well. The atmosphere is very cute, pretty, nice bright natural lighting. I would have liked for the seating to be placed a little further apart from one another as we were kind of close to other patrons. We had an exceptional experience at River and Rail during our first trip to Roanoke. Our waiter was helpful, kind, and funny and the staff in general worked together beautifully to make our entire experience feel really special. We loved getting to see into the open kitchen while the chefs prepared dishes and everything was delicious. We got the cheese platter and pimento cheese with pork rinds (pictured) to start and were really happy with both. We found out too late about the secret menu item simply called The Burger so I guess we'll have to take another trip to try that. ;) Our steaks were great though and the ice cream and sorbet flights topped everything off nicely.
