Half rack ribs with beef plate.
    Daryn B.

I was impressed. Ordered the half slab with beef to go. The ribs were done the way you would expect. They were juicy and fell off the bone. They had a glaze on them which was a little sweet but still great flavor. Definitely a winner in my book. The beef was okay but probably would go with the pork next time. They had a few sauces that I could add. I went with a sweet red but probably would rather gone with a little more heat. Still good though. I tried the coleslaw on the side. Not KFC sweet which is fine. Still good tasting. The hush puppies reminded me of mini-corn dogs minus the dog. I did this as take out so not much to say about customer service. The place did have a few tables and booths but seems most orders are to-go. This was my first trip to Roanoke and will try to remember this place if I ever get back. The ribs definitely impressed me.

Never did I imagine when I walked into the Due South BBQ Restaurant to have dinner with a friend that I would be having the most exquisite BBQ dinner that I have ever had in my life. Their white building with a pink and black sign with their logo high above looked very nice. And the parking lot all around the restaurant was very convenient. Inside, the place was very clean, well painted and nicely decorated with pigs and cows cute figurines and framed artworks neatly placed all around the interior of the restaurant. The hardwood floors decor, together with the combination of burgundy and black furniture, which included booths as well as tables and chairs, gave the place an elegant yet relaxing ambiance in which to enjoy what would be an amazingly delicious BBQ dinner. As soon as we walked in and young gentleman gave us a warm welcome, a copy of the menu, and invited us to take a seat where we felt more comfortable. We sat down at one of the booths and reviewed the menu, which was very well designed in tones of pink and black, with color photographs of some of the items on the menu, and well laminated. It was a delight to view and read. When we were ready we walked to the ordering counter and the same young gentleman who greeted us at the entrance took our order. Both my friend and I picked a fountain soda to drink and as our main course we both picked a Combo Plate with 1/2 Rack of Ribs and Pulled Pork. As a side my friend ordered banana puddin', and I ordered smoked taters. They also threw in three hushpuppies. For dessert we both ordered a slice of the Kentucky Bourbon Pecan Pie. We paid and went back to our table to talk until they called us to pick up our order at the counter. Each of our orders came in two red plastic baskets on top of a red and white checkered paper. The Half Rack of Ribs in one basket and the Pulled Pork and our side item in another. I first tasted the Pulled Pork. It was juicy and tender, and cooked just right. The pork tasted so good that you didn't need to put any more BBQ sauce on it, although if you wanted they had a good selection to choose from. The Ribs were also cooked well, that the meat easily came off the bone. And they also tasted amazing. My smoked Taters and my friend's Banana Pudding also tasted wonderful. And last but not least, the Hushpuppies were crunchy on the outside and soft and tasty in the inside. The best made and cooked Hushpuppies that I have ever had. Oh and the dessert, a meal is not a great meal without the "Grand Finale" of an amazing dessert. And that is precisely how you could describe the Kentucky Bourbon Pecan Pie! Amazing. What an extraordinary dining experience! I highly recommend this Due South BBQ Restaurant. If you're like me who loves BBQ and good cooking, you will clearly appreciate the wonderful ambiance, amazing food, and excellent customer service of this place. And most likely, just as I did right then and there, make it your favorite BBQ Restaurant of all times!

I shot a video here and completely forgot to take photos, probably because I knew shortly after receiving the food that this wasn't going to be a very positive video. When we got our brisket and it came out shredded like pulled pork I knew we were in major trouble. To add to that, it was super dry...not even the bbq sauces on the table were bringing that cow back to life. The ribs had a ton of gristle and came with a sauce that was not enjoyable. They were even hard to cut through...a major miss for a BBQ establishment. The sides were bland, but I will say the baked beans were sadly the best thing I had. And on top of it all...it was expensive. If you've ever had real, good BBQ...save your money and go somewhere else.

Great experience at the Due South BBQ Roanoke location! I was sad to see their Christiansburg location close, but so glad I got to stop by this one! Greeted right as I walked in the door, guided through a few menu questions and received my food promptly! I ordered the chicken wings with the smoked taters and enjoyed them with the Red Hot sauce (which has a kick) and the Sweet Red sauce. They have weekday lunch specials, kids meals, and note gluten free items on their menu! If you are gluten free, be sure to ask for your meal without the hush puppies as those unfortunately are not GF! Plenty of seating and about two miles off 81! Definitely worth a stop!

Excellent chicken, pork, and brisket. This is where our family likes to go for some good barbeque. Please try the smoked chicken - I am not a huge fan of chicken at barbecue joints but theirs is AMAZING! The pulled pork and brisket will NOT disappoint. Teresa is a great server and deserves a shout-out. This is a locally-owned place and they do a great job. Their sides and sauces are made here at the restaurant and are delicious. We love this place. Come on by and you will too.

Really yummy BBQ!! Friendly, fast service and delicious food. Everything was fresh, crispy, and flavorful. As you can see in the photo, the meat literally fell off the bone it was so tender. Perfect little road trip pit stop for dinner!

Sauce selection at every table. My faves were the hot red and the lexington sauce

I'll start off by saying I'm not a BBQ connoisseur. I rarely eat meat, but I had a craving and found this place on Yelp because it was less than 10 minutes from my hotel. On a Saturday night, I was the only diner, but it seems that they had a steady stream of online orders. I got the wings and half rack of ribs. The portions were hearty for the prices. I enjoyed trying all the sauces that were at each table. The green beans could use some seasoning, but all in all a solid meal. Not sure why there weren't more people there, but perhaps it's because of the location. Service was prompt and friendly.

Yet never in my wildest dream would I have imagined that it was designed by a kid, the nephew of the owner. After being awarded the Triad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And Subshack in Salem, Virginia, is the perfect example. After arriving to this Sub Shop located in a small strip mall in the middle of nowhere, in Salem, Virginia, the friendly owner of the place, who has a wonderful personality, gave me a warm welcome and immediately, in a nutshell, told me the story of how this place came to be. Born and raised in New York and having lived for many years in North Carolina, the opportunity of opening up this business here in Salem, Virginia came up and he literally went for it. And aren't we lucky he did because it is an ingenious little Sub Shop, a product of two persons who let their imagination run wild and then worked hard to see their dream of owning a little restaurant come true. And don't be confused by its name, it simply means a small place where large Subs are made for people to savor and enjoy. Thus we have: the "SUBSHACK." This restaurant is mostly for orders To-Go, yet outdoor, in front, it has a picnic table, for customers who would enjoy eating there during the warm Seasons of the year. They bake their own Sub bread in-house daily, and also have daily Specials. Today's Special was: "BUY ANY LARGE SUB GET A FREE DRINK & CHIPS." So I ordered their large Italian Sub. The Sub bread was gigantic and their Deli meats were also quality and huge. On top of this there was a large list of ingredients you could add to the Sub. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review and see for yourselves. Besides Hot and Cold Subs, they also serve Paninis, Desserts, and Milkshakes and Smoothies. I can't wait to return and try their Cuban Panini. In conclusion I definitely recommend this Sub place as a very unique place if you're looking for good food, prepared in a welcoming and friendly environment, by a warm and kindhearted individual.

While we opted not to explore the drink menu, we were eager to see what the kitchen had to offer. The menu itself is concise, focusing primarily on wings, sandwiches, and pizzas, supplemented by a few small appetizers. The culinary style is quite eclectic. They feature several unconventional toppings and flavor combinations that might seem a bit eccentric at first glance. The Culinary Experience I decided on a flatbread-style pizza topped with: Smoked chicken Pickles Peppadew-style peppers (which resembled small cherry tomatoes) A tangy, zesty sauce reminiscent of an enchilada base with an extra "zing." My wife opted for a "build-your-own" pizza featuring red onions, pepperoni, and bell peppers. Although she realized too late that she had forgotten to request light sauce, she noticed the oversight immediately upon the dish's arrival. Service Observations The service was a bit of a mixed bag. Our waitress was professional but remarkably brisk. She lacked the usual pleasantries or "small talk" one might expect, focusing instead on efficiency. While her haste felt a bit impersonal, I couldn't complain about her attentiveness--she was incredibly prompt at refilling my iced tea the moment my glass was empty. Make sure you bring your pocketbook this pizza brings a sting at the register.

And Capriotti's Sandwich Shop, is the perfect example. Capriotti's Sandwich Shop is known for its slow-roasted turkey subs, especially the "Bobbie," which was voted "The Greatest Sandwich in America" by AOL.com. The Bobbie features homemade turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, and mayo on a soft roll. Capriotti's also roasts whole turkeys in-house nightly, hand-pulls the meat, and makes its own meatballs and coleslaw.  After discovering the hideout of this outstanding sandwich shop, and receiving many positive feedback from my friends that have eaten there, I drove up to the place to discover first hand one of Cave Spring's greatest secret. From the design of its outdoor sign to its interior design and decor, this sandwich shop calls attention to its focus on quality and uniqueness, and in being the best of the best. For example it uses American Wagyu Beef for its Cheese Steak Sub and Restaurant News has named this the Best Sandwich in Vegas. As soon as I entered, I was impressed by all the colorful signs with photos of their amazing sandwiches and references to the awards they have received, and how one of them even made a fan "cry while eating" it. One of their employees warmly greeted me and after I asked him, explained how was the ordering system. There was a size display sign to help you get a sense of the different sizes, and then high above there were three lit up menus of items from where to choose from. I ordered an American Wagyu Cheese Steak medium Sub, with fries, and a softdrink. After paying, I was given a paper cup to go serve myself my drink while they started preparing my order. In the meantime I walked around and documented the place with photographs and video clips to make my review more lively and real to the readers. When I was called to pick up my order. It came in an aluminum tray on top of a piece of paper. The Sub on one side cut in half anf the fries on the other side. I was first impressed by their fresh and soft bread, then by the quality of their meat and ingredients, and lastly by their fries. Their texture was crispy and light to allow you to eat them all without feeling heavily full. I immediately downloaded their app to take advantage of their reward program because for sure I knew I would return. I found out that they also offer catering and brought home a brochure about it. I highly recommend this amazing Sandwich Shop, for its friendly staff, its clean and comfortable environment, its pleasant ambiance, and last but not least, for their extraordinary sandwiches.

A Hanger steak is a long, flat, flavorful cut reminiscent of flank steak and skirt steak, only more tender. In the US, hanger steak is most commonly called "hanging tender" or "butcher's steak." It gets the latter nickname because it was historically a "secret" cut that butchers would keep for themselves rather than sell to the public. Other names you might see on menus for this cut are Hanging tenderloin and Bistro steak. All that I know is that it's the best piece of meat that I have ever eaten and it has been at this restaurant. So that was the main reason I came to dine here today and my expectations were completely fulfilled. When I arrived, I was greeted by a friendly, young lady with the warm welcoming of a regular guest. She happily took me to the table I had requested when I made my reservation online. It was a table facing the bar with their open kitchen on the right of me. I like to watch the bartenders and chefs in action as they create their amazing drinks and culinary masterpieces. Immediately after I was seated my server Tim came by with the usual familiar greeting, welcoming me once again for returning to dine there and thanking me for being such a loyal customer. I had the usual cold water and this time started off with one of their Butterfly Kisses Mocktails. It both looked and tasted amazing. For appetizer I had their VA Oyster Wraps, followed by their special salad of the day. And for the main entrée I had their R&R Hanger Steak. My friend and I walked in at 9 o'clock EXACTLY on a Thursday night to have a drink. The sign on the door said they were open until 10:00. There were 4 or 5 tables seated, enjoying dinner and cocktails. 5 or 6 people at the bar. There was no one to start with at the actual hostess stand and servers saw us standing at the door but did not approach us even though there was an hour left on their operating time. So we walked directly to the bar and sat down. We had just eaten at Fork in the Alley so all we wanted was one drink and we figured an hour was plenty of time to get that done. The first thing the bartender said to us was "The kitchen is closed." Not "hello" or "Hey what can I get you?" but the kitchen is closed. I said "oh I'm sorry I thought you closed at 10:00." He said "well, that's up for debate we were actually discussing that right now. We're basically closed but you can have a drink because it's not like the rest of these people are going anywhere." What do you mean that's up for discussion? Your hours say you're open till 10 o'clock, it's 9 o'clock I have an hour to eat and have drinks! The other bartender, or perhaps he was only a bar back, gave us a very disapproving look. I get it, I work in the food service industry. I'm a server at a 4 diamond restaurant, and I hate when people walk in minutes before we close and want to sit down. But if we post that we're open until 10 and you walk in at 9:45 I'm going to serve you and treat you like anyone else that walked in at 6:00 because it's your tips that pay my bills and put food on my table. It's definitely not the hourly wage I get from my employer! And as a server I never walk into a restaurant with less than 30 minutes to close. And it's more like an hour if I'm looking to eat a meal. I know you want to go home. When it's the end of the night and I'm at work, so do I! But there's an hour left and I wanted one drink. That's it! We continued to get disappointed looks from a few other employees even though we weren't the last people in the place. I told my friend (it's 9:45 at this point) that we obviously need to go since servers are standing around looking at us like we've got the plague. We paid our bill and promptly left. Two couples still at the bar. It's 9:59 right now as I'm writing this at home (you're still technically open btw) but I left feeling like I had stayed hours past your closing time. It's a real shame because we really enjoyed our drinks! They were super yummy! And I'm always getting asked by guests where's a good place for a late night cocktail and I used to recommend The River and Rail right along with Lucky's because we had a shuttle that would take guests out, but after tonight I won't be doing that anymore. Because there's nothing worse than feeling unwelcome at a restaurant that is still open.
