Holy cow, it was amazing! I've heard a lot about this place over the last year or so, and finally got to try it today. I totally over-ordered because I wanted to try different things. And nothing disappointed. First impression was that it's a weird little green box of a restaurant (looking at it from the outside). Then, we walked in, we was it was super fun and trendy with a great atmosphere. Just not a lot of seating. So definitely not the place for big groups or office-away-from home (despite the amazing goodies and excellent bottomless coffee). You order at the counter. I met multiple staff, all of whom were friendly and helpful as I asked a bunch of questions about the menu. Wil, in particular, was a fantastic host. And the reason I had so many questions? Because the menu is huge and packed with crazy stuff you'd never attempt at home - like the incredible red curry chicken breakfast burrito I devoured. They have a monthly special, which we didn't try. My wife is gluten-, dairy-, and grain-free, and she got an amazing curry breakfast plate -- scrambled eggs, sautéed tofu, and creamed potato with peas. As a beautiful husband, I tried all of those things, and love them too. But for me, the aforementioned burrito. A ham, egg and cheese biscuit, and a breakfast cookie. With a side of amazing coffee! Yeah, I know, I totally didn't need all that food, but I had to try a biscuit at "Scratch Biscuit," right? Everything was exceptional! The only thing I'd change is that the biscuit mix is too salty for my taste, but that's kind of a southern thing, right? Anyway, I'm already looking forward to my next visit. This is a must-try in the Roanoke area. Say hello to Wil for me!

Totally solid experience for a first time visit. I'm pretty sure I lucked out on timing catching them for brunch around an hour before close on a Friday. No issues with parking, however the lot is small. Lot was clean as was the walk up. Upon entering my son and I were greeted by the guy behind the counter who proved friendly and helpful. A menu board is behind counter. There are also menus you can grab and take back to the table. I saw several items that looked like great options. My son ordered the egg biscuit and french toast. I got the biscuit pot pie which is a biscuit, egg, cheese and gravy. The dining room is pretty compact. I found it clean. Napkins and utensils are self serve up front. They also offer tap water. Tables are self bus. Food cranked out fast, maybe 10 minutes. Everything looked fantastic and proved to be amazing! My son was very satisfied with his oversized breakfast sandwich and french toast. My dish was over the top yum! All served at the correct temperature. The combo of biscuit and egg and gravy was a major hit for me. I'm a big fan and would 100% return and recommend to others.

The food at SBC was the better than my Grand Mother's, out of this world! This will be our new breakfast place.

I have always wanted to try Scratch Biscuit Company, and this particular morning they did not disappoint. I usually patron restaurants like waffle house or Ihop on mornings like this one. But I absolutely had to say this breakfast made my morning. From the homey feel of this corner side restaurant to the great host that answered any and every question I had about the menu and ingredients. I was blown away by my experience!! I ordered the breakfast pot pie because Id never heard of anything like it and it exceeded my expectations visually and flavor wise, there was a giant biscuit loaded on top of eggs sausage potatoes and gravy, this took my breakfast to another level!

Fish and egg on a biscuit. Grits. Biscuit & Sausage Gravy. Chicken Biscuit with egg.

Oder taker was extremely professional. It was our first time and he was patient with our questions and very friendly. He said their grits were the must-have and they were great. Also the crispy chicken is particularly good. I had the fish and egg. Very good. The biscuits were also good and we shared a biscuit with sausage gravy. I felt like the gravy could have been better.

Great food! We got the bless your heart biscuit and the early rise platter. The green tomatoes were delicious but the sandwich is huge. The platter had great eggs and the biscuit was great. Their outdoor seating is nice too!

Excellent !!! Wow what a breakfast! Filled us up until dinner. If you like homemade biscuits like you WISH your grandma could make then give this place a try. Can't wait to go back and try new things on the menu!

My wife did the usual searching on Yelp and found Scratch Biscuit for our first breakfast in Roanoke. She was impressed with the positive reviews and she loves a good biscuit. We decided to stop in on a Sunday morning in early October. It was within 15 minutes of our hotel and just down the street from Black Dog Salvage, which was our next stop. We arrived and could immediately see the parking was limited. It appears the locals have it figured out, you can place an online order or call in your order, pull up to the designated pickup spots. We witnessed employees quickly responding to customers by stepping outside, gathering the customers name and bringing their to go order out. For customers dining in like us, we struggled to find a spot to park. We circled around a few times before securing a space near the back of their building. We walked inside and joined the short line to place our order. The inside is narrow and small which does make it somewhat difficult to navigate. We found there to be way more customers than indoor seating but noted they also have outdoor seating. There is really no place to wait for to-go orders, which explains the reserved parking spaces for easier to-go order pickup. After reviewing the menu in line, we were ready to place our orders when we got to the counter. My wife decided to get the brisket biscuit with egg and a side of sliced tomatoes. I chose the breakfast burrito with both bacon and sausage because I am not much of a biscuit fan. While we were placing our order at the counter we asked a few questions of the young man helping us. We learned Scratch has the same owner as the establishment next door where many others were parking. He also confirmed that we were welcome to sit at either outside dining areas on either side of the building. We filled our water cups while waiting for our name to be called. Again, it is quite cramped and somewhat difficult to navigate amongst others who are also waiting for their orders or sitting inside. Our order was ready in a timely manner but when our name was called our order was contained in a bag. We confirmed our order was for dining in twice during the order process and noticed the slip on the outside of the bag said to go. We took our order without mentioning we were dining in. We peeked at the first outdoor area and didn't find an available table so we headed over to the second space where we easily found a table. We unwrapped our items and were thankful they included plastic silverware and additional napkins. My wife really enjoyed the brisket and egg biscuit and was impressed with the serving of sliced tomato. I also enjoyed my breakfast burrito though it would have been nice to have some salsa options, which I did not see. Scratch Biscuit has something really good going on and we can imagine their catering options are popular as well. Could they move to a larger location, yes but if they chose to retain their current building we would suggest considering a few improvements. A few suggestions include designating a team member to monitor the indoor and exterior dining spaces for better customer service and to assist with clearing and wiping down the tables and chairs between customers. Creating better signage informing customers of the parking options as well as the two outside seating options, and laminating the paper menus so they can be cleaned easily. Overall the food portion of our experience was great, however, the other factors mentioned above result in less than a five star rating.

Our biscuits were large and delicious. Highly recommend the bologna with egg and cheese. They were really busy but all the staff was really nice and attentive and our wait was not bad at all.

A small, popular and busy breakfast place. Prepare to stand in line but the line moves quickly. As the name says, you're coming here for the biscuits. Served a multitude of ways, theres an option for most every taste. Menus are along the wall as you make your way to the counter, and there is a big board overhead at the register. Place your order, pay, grab a seat and your beverage, they will bring your food to you when its ready. Ordered of course, biscuits and gravy (a single) with some scrambled eggs on the side. These things are huge, fyi. Great flavor, tender pillowy goodness. With the eggs in the mix, its a good and filling breakfast. A good cup of coffee too. Well worth the visit, standing in line, looking for a seat and crowd. 4 Stars a solid breakfast choice 01015

Jamaican Pattys and Hot Honey Chicken
    Anna S.

My family and I needed a quick breakfast spot and stumbled upon this spot. Our Airbnb host has recommended this breakfast spot to check out. When arriving parking was very limited but we were able to get a spot. The line was very intimating, however it was very short and quick. We ordered the Jamaican patty tacos and hot honey biscuit. We found this meal very heavy but worth our money. It was delicious. The seatings were hard to find since we had a big group but we were able to find a spot outside. I would recommend ordering pick up or Togo for a quicker service!

Some of the biggest biscuits I have ever had. The egg biscuit and Jerry Garcia (tofu) was what I got on separate occasions. They k ow how to do breakfast right. I always pull up and they run out (even in the rain) tonget my order...5 min later and they are bringing out everything. I did have to run in one time to add hashbrowns and saw that they had a wonderful dine in atmosphere. Very fast service. The staff aim to please. Highly recommend this place especially when you looking to pig out on some breakfast food.

A Hanger steak is a long, flat, flavorful cut reminiscent of flank steak and skirt steak, only more tender. In the US, hanger steak is most commonly called "hanging tender" or "butcher's steak." It gets the latter nickname because it was historically a "secret" cut that butchers would keep for themselves rather than sell to the public. Other names you might see on menus for this cut are Hanging tenderloin and Bistro steak. All that I know is that it's the best piece of meat that I have ever eaten and it has been at this restaurant. So that was the main reason I came to dine here today and my expectations were completely fulfilled. When I arrived, I was greeted by a friendly, young lady with the warm welcoming of a regular guest. She happily took me to the table I had requested when I made my reservation online. It was a table facing the bar with their open kitchen on the right of me. I like to watch the bartenders and chefs in action as they create their amazing drinks and culinary masterpieces. Immediately after I was seated my server Tim came by with the usual familiar greeting, welcoming me once again for returning to dine there and thanking me for being such a loyal customer. I had the usual cold water and this time started off with one of their Butterfly Kisses Mocktails. It both looked and tasted amazing. For appetizer I had their VA Oyster Wraps, followed by their special salad of the day. And for the main entrée I had their R&R Hanger Steak. Everything was timed appropriately and was served at the right timing. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the high-quality of their food and drinks. For dessert I had my favorite, their Dark Chocolate Panna Cotta. What a way to end a spectacular dinner. I highly recommend this restaurant for an exceptional fine dining experience.

My friend and I walked in at 9 o'clock EXACTLY on a Thursday night to have a drink. The sign on the door said they were open until 10:00. There were 4 or 5 tables seated, enjoying dinner and cocktails. 5 or 6 people at the bar. There was no one to start with at the actual hostess stand and servers saw us standing at the door but did not approach us even though there was an hour left on their operating time. So we walked directly to the bar and sat down. We had just eaten at Fork in the Alley so all we wanted was one drink and we figured an hour was plenty of time to get that done. The first thing the bartender said to us was "The kitchen is closed." Not "hello" or "Hey what can I get you?" but the kitchen is closed. I said "oh I'm sorry I thought you closed at 10:00." He said "well, that's up for debate we were actually discussing that right now. We're basically closed but you can have a drink because it's not like the rest of these people are going anywhere." What do you mean that's up for discussion? Your hours say you're open till 10 o'clock, it's 9 o'clock I have an hour to eat and have drinks! The other bartender, or perhaps he was only a bar back, gave us a very disapproving look. I get it, I work in the food service industry. I'm a server at a 4 diamond restaurant, and I hate when people walk in minutes before we close and want to sit down. But if we post that we're open until 10 and you walk in at 9:45 I'm going to serve you and treat you like anyone else that walked in at 6:00 because it's your tips that pay my bills and put food on my table. It's definitely not the hourly wage I get from my employer! And as a server I never walk into a restaurant with less than 30 minutes to close. And it's more like an hour if I'm looking to eat a meal. I know you want to go home. When it's the end of the night and I'm at work, so do I! But there's an hour left and I wanted one drink. That's it! We continued to get disappointed looks from a few other employees even though we weren't the last people in the place. I told my friend (it's 9:45 at this point) that we obviously need to go since servers are standing around looking at us like we've got the plague. We paid our bill and promptly left. Two couples still at the bar. It's 9:59 right now as I'm writing this at home (you're still technically open btw) but I left feeling like I had stayed hours past your closing time. It's a real shame because we really enjoyed our drinks! They were super yummy! And I'm always getting asked by guests where's a good place for a late night cocktail and I used to recommend The River and Rail right along with Lucky's because we had a shuttle that would take guests out, but after tonight I won't be doing that anymore. Because there's nothing worse than feeling unwelcome at a restaurant that is still open.

I arrived at around 6:45AM and parked next to the sidewalk in front of the restaurant on a street parking spot. There were already some steady customers dining inside. There are times when one encounters very special restaurants that can only be described as…read more"priceless." And every time one returns to dine there, it only serves to reinforce the perfect attachment that one has acquired from the very first time they dined there and had the pleasure of enjoying an extraordinary fine dining experience. After having been selected as number 4 of Yelp's Top 50 most prolific Elites of 2025, a year when I also was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Photographer of the Year Award at their Yelpies 2025 Award Ceremony, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, and where last year I was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Yelper of the Year Award, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to return to those special ones, that have made a difference in my life and highlight them, for the benefit of the public, so they too can have an opportunity to appreciate the qualities of a one-of-a-kind fine dining experience. And Alexander's, in the heart of Downtown Roanoke, is a perfect example. From the moment I arrived and walked through their door, I was greeted in such a way, by none other than Bjorn, the Dining Room Manager himself, that made me feel appreciated and immediately made me feel at home. Neither the coldness of the weather nor the accumulated snow could hinder me from my decision to dine here this evening. I was the first one to arrive after they opened their doors. Since the streets were still icy and filled with snow, I left my Lexus at home and took a Lyft to the restaurant, which was not far from my neighborhood, the Historic Old Southwest. Since it was a slow night due to the weather, the Dining Room Manager himself doubled as my server for the evening. To drink, we discussed my flavor liking for a Mocktail, and he came up with a special one, that ended up tasting amazing. To dine, I started with the Deconstructed cajunese california roll appetizer. It was amazingly delicious! Then I had a Salad vinaigrette, which was included with every entrée, and a French Baguette with a cube of butter. The baguette slices with butter were so fresh, soft in the inside and crispy on the outside, that they confirmed my view that the quality of a restaurant's bread and butter is a reflection of the quality of the restaurant and its cuisine. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the quality of their food. As my main entrée, I had the Grilled filet of beef, sauce marchand de vin, cooked medium-rare. The filet was cooked to perfection, just as ordered, so tender, juicy, and flavorful. It was a culinary masterpiece from Chef and General Manager, Boni M. Webb, who graciously came out to greet me, and gave me an opportunity to personally celebrate her magnificent cuisine. She reminded me of my Japanese student who obtained the best grade in my Business class at the university where I taught. She was very humble and kind. As the Grand Finale dessert, on the advice of my server and general manager, I ordered their Glace au chocolat. It was wonderful. What an outstanding dining experience I once again had in this outstanding restaurant with a unique combination of exceptional food, atmosphere, and heartfelt service. I highly recommend it, and can't wait to return.

I had inquired with the restaurant a month or so in advance of my visit (I was concerned about the dress code) and they were spot on. I wore jeans and a buton down and was quite comfortable (and not out of place). It's a very nice restaurant, but it's certainly not "stuffy." Service was excellent. Food was phenomenal. Dinner started with some nice bread (and really good butter), and a salad came with my lamb ragu. It was all really good. The lamb was super rich and very flavorful. My only suggestion would be to serve the ragu over the polenta, and to add more vegetables. As it was, the dinner was "just enough;" I wasn't stuffed but I wasn's hungry, either. Really good dinner!
