I went to eat at Panda King with my family on a Saturday morning and overall decent experience. Walking in, it was not too busy so we were able to instantly sit down and the rolling dimsum carts instantly came over to us to sell food to us. Beware if you have not experienced push cart dimsum as it can be really overstimulating. But I like the aspect of it because it feels really authentic. Since the last time I have been here, there were some new items they offered. One that I tried was the black sesame salted egg yolk bun, which I really liked! Its a good runny consistency and has a good flavor if you like salted egg yolk. Other than that, we had the typical dimsum classics like shu mai, har gow, and chicken feet which were all pretty good, but not insanely good. My biggest complaint about the place is the spacing of the tables. The tables are barely one foot apart from one another, so it feels like we are in everyones conversation and I can imagine if it were busier, it would be tight and uncomfortable. Had pork shumai, shrimp shumai, we passed on dessert because we went for king cake afterwards but they had sesame balls, custard cakes, extensive desserts. We had the lotus rice, the tripe, spare ribs, and that dish that they cut with the scissors which is real slippery noodle. It was all terrific. We went in a Sunday morning around 11:30am and was quite busy! Our server immediately came up to our table to take our drink orders and advised us to take a look at the variety of dimsum dishes on the pushcarts going past us. Panda King is the only dimsum restaurant that still incorporates the pushcart concept, which is very appealing! I enjoyed seeing many familiar and unfamiliar foods while also being able to enjoy my time dining. We noticed that some carts were missing today like the Tofu and noodle cart, which was slightly disappointing. On the other hand, the food was just okay. We tried a couple of new menu items (Soup dumplings and Steamed beef dumpling) Both were lacking in flavor and could not distinguish what type of filling were in there. Other items like the Fried calamari, Coconut snails and Crispy roasted pork belly are always a staple, but they were not as hot and more salty than usual. From all the dim sum places I've tried in NOLA, Panda King is the ONLY place that has rolling carts for the food options. I really appreciate this since it's a traditional aesthetic for dim sum that gives off an authentic vibe. The service was nice. The inside was normal, but clean. The food has always been great! Especially the shui mai & fried taro balls. The only downside is that they don't tell you how much each food item costs. You would have to pick from the cart, and the servers will stamp on the checklist for the price. You don't know the price beforehand. Aside from that, I don't really have any other complaints. Yummy House is a really good spot too, but they unfortunately don't have the rolling carts like Panda King. Overall, Panda King will always be an original West Bank dim sum staple. read more

The service was actually really good, with carts zooming in/out of the kitchen, but that might be the only thing good with this place. This place was recommended by locals and I'm a bit shocked that the dim sum here is not that good, given the diversity of the West Bank area. We got lots of different orders, but even simple plates like shrimp dumplings and pork buns seemed inconsistent and not very tasteful. Glad that I live in Atlanta where dim sum is so much better. Mama was on the search for Honey Walnut Shrimp and they have it here!! Dim sum carts are only on Saturdays and Sundays. Dim sum can be ordered on the daily but on the paper and the kitchen will bring it out. The honey walnut shrimp came out super fresh and crunchy. We got two lunch specials that came with soup so we ordered one of each the sweet and sour soup and egg drop soup. Both taste nothing close to any sweet and sour soup or egg drop soup I've ever had. I'm usually the person that would just eat it because I don't like wasting food but one spoon taste of both soup was enough. The calamari tasted like it had been fried and just left sitting on the counter before it was brought out to us. The congee was ok. The dumplings were ok. The chicken feet were flavorless. Stopped here for lunch this past Sunday. It's been years since I've had dim sum so I was excited! This place is located in Louisiana, I suppose where must of the Asians live. I'm not familiar with this state or area expect for my once in awhile visits. I'm assuming since this area has alot of Asian markets, restaurants and supermarket. The wait was about 20 minutes for two people. Place was bustling with customers and staff. About every table was occupied. What I liked: -dim sum was served in the traditional carts. -they had hot chili oil and sauce at the tables. -the options was good. -Place was big with plenty of room. Panda King had recently reopened with their dine in service. the staff were friendly and took every safety precaution when delivering food and service! We ordered from their lunch menu which included vietnamese egg rolls, lettuce wraps and their large variety of seafood and meat. the tenderness of the fried lobster was magnificent! the peking duck wraps were carefully made and were devine. The crispyness alongside the fresh vegetables made for a delectable bite. This was my favorite! we finished our lunch with banh cam (sesame seed balls filled with red mung beans )and flan. Their flan was subtly sweet and not overpowering like most are. The Banh Cam was fresh from the fryer and was phenomenal! Overall I am elated that my favorite place had re-opened for lunch. People overlook that the location is ideal for anyone in the metro area. One of my fondest memories occurred here many years ago. While I still had my loved ones they took me here for my birthday. It was such a happy point in my life. What really highlighted the night was the end when I cracked open my fortune cookie. I was use to the typical upbeat generalized written fortunes in the cookies. However, my fortune was actually ominous and forewarning. I had never gotten a fortune like that before. It was novel and my whole family was intrigued as much as me. We laughed. I had kept the paper for years as a reminder of that joyous occasion. The fortune said something to the effect of being careful when walking at night alone. I used to come here all the time with my family as a kid. I went back today and I am severely disappointed. The interior has been updated and it looks great! It's clean and the staff is nice enough for a buffet. The food is the problem. The sushi was awful (dry rice and tasted like day old fish). The frozen foods like egg rolls and dumplings tasted off. Panda King is well known for it's tradition dim sum, but tonight I experienced what's behind door number two. Literally, next to the dim sum restaurant is a separate entrance to a completely different world. It's a large dining room that is setup with two options. On the right is a gigantic buffet and on the left is a dining area dedicated to a unique hot pot dining experience. This review is about my hot pot experience. The hot pot concept is not new to me, but Panda King's implementation is exciting and unique. I've never seen anything like this.The tables are custom built so that each diner has their own built-in burner. There is a simple control that is used to control the heat to your burner. This allows each person to choose their own soup base and to build their own hot pot. The protocol is simple, but can be intimidating for the first time. Luckily, our waitress and the staff were very very helpful. There are four steps. Order your soup base, order from a list of raw proteins (that you will share), select add-ins that are pushed around the restaurant (dim sum cart style), and use sauces and seasonings from a dip station. So, let me break this down. First, you choose your soup base from one of six different broths. The most popular are the Spicy Thai Tom Yum and the Beef broth. As the meal progresses the waitress will add more hot broth. I chose the Thai Tom Yum. It was good, not too spicy or too sour. Our table of six ordered four proteins to share. The brisket, pork belly, short ribs, and scallops. The meats are thinly sliced and presented in perfectly stacked rolls. It was an impressive presentation, and an effective way to get individual pieces of meat. The thin cuts cook very quickly in your boiling stock. But, we agreed that our meat selections tasted the same after being cooked. The scallops were giant, and the were good. Four orders were plenty for our party. The highlight to me was the push carts that came to your table with add-ins. The carts contain an endless variety of different items. Some examples were: mushrooms, noodles, dumplings, green vegetables, and seafoods. Add-ins are served on plates that contain enough to share. As I mentioned the cart order technique is very much like at dim sum. As you order, the wait staff marks a tally on your order sheet. The last item to describe is the dip station. You visit this before your meal begins. The stations contains at least a dozen different seasonings and dipping sauces. As an example, I got some freshly chopped garlic, mix of minced peppers, and a hot chilli paste. Our experience was fabulous. It is an interactive, social event that everyone enjoyed. We ordered an insane amount of food because everything looked so good. And, I was surprised by how affordable our dinner was. With tip, our bill was approximately $100. I strongly recommend, and I hope you enjoy as much as we did. read more

So happy that they're back and with takeout dim sum! This has been my go to spot for takeout dim sum the entire pandemic, which definitely made 2020 so much better for me. One thing I wish was different though was the availability of the baked pineapple buns--you can currently only get them to go on the weekends, but I'd want to be able to get these every day! I've recently moved to NOLA a few months ago and have been craving dim sum. Much to my disappointment, NOLA seems to be very limited with dim sum options according to yelp but panda king seemed pretty authentic so I decided to give it a try on a Sunday afternoon. My boyfriend, sister, and I came around noon on a Sunday. It was crowded but there were still tables available and we were seated right away. The establishment is pretty spacious and is divided into buffet area and dim sum area. They have people pushing carts with a variety of options to choose from. We ordered a little bit of everything (bbq pork buns, xiu Mai, har cao, pork congee with Chinese donuts, tripe, chicken feet, fried taro, fish balls, fried smelt, shrimp rice crepe) and I was unimpressed. Food was either cold or lukewarm, flavorless or super salty. Service was nonexistent but I usually don't expect much service when I go to asian establishments. Overall, I was unimpressed and I don't think I will return here anytime soon. I guess I'll just have to wait until I go back to Houston one of these days to get my dim sum fix. read more

For some reason, I'm obnoxiously picky about Chinese food. Where do I get off? I can't cook it, but I consider myself the Guy Fieri of the stuff. I got a takeout of sweet and sour shrimp, veggie fried rice and it came with an egg roll and two crab rangoons. The sweet and sour shrimp was okay, it was a little heavy on the batter, but I do like that the sauce came on the side. The veggie rice was flavorless and I had to add soy sauce to make it edible. The egg rolls and the crab rangoons were great! I'd probably order these on their own- I guess you can never go wrong with fried stuff. Would I go back? Eh, maybe to dine in or to do dim sum. I went here with my family for lunch and we had an overall mediocre experience. We were quickly seated and the dim sum carts came out immediately. While there were a lot of options, I feel like the taste and freshness was not up to par. The food wasn't very hot and tasted bland honestly. It might cater to the older asian folks who prefer their food with less sodium, but at least there was soy sauce available for dipping. The only two dishes I personally would get again are the shrimp (not sure the exact name, but it is pictured) and barbecue pork. Each person has their own setting to control. First, choose your broth: vegetable, chicken, beef or tom yum. Then choose your proteins. They also push a few carts around like dim sum, with seafood and veggies to choose from after ordering. There was a table on the side of room with garnishes and sauces to enhance your meal too. We ordered a beef and tom yum broth and had to add a few sauces together to make our broths better. It was ok, not great. I wouldn't come again unless someone really wanted to. They have the typical mobile cart service, where servers will come by your table with food and you can choose whatever you desire. Since they come in fairly small portions, it means that you can try a variety of dishes. They have carts for noodles, dumplings, congee, and some of the larger meat entrees like char siu and duck. Some of my favourites include the shrimp shu mai, shrimp har gow, and the shrimp cheung fun which comes with a sweet soy sauce (I'm a shrimp lover if you can't tell already lol).
