We visited 9 Roses because my wife had a taste for pho. While I usually enjoy giving high ratings, this visit was average at best. Our server, Thoa, didn't exactly enhance the experience. I wouldn't describe her as outright rude, but her approach was very direct and cold, and I even had to walk over to her stand to get our bill. I really enjoy trying new dining spots and supporting our restaurant and bar community with generous tips, but unfortunately, this wasn't the type of experience that makes me want to return. read more

Arrived around 8:10 at the restaurant on a Saturday night, which closes at 9. Were promptly greeted and seated. Nice atmosphere and lots of diners at this time of night. Glad to see a parking lot and not street parking. Drinks were the salted lemonade and the salted plum spritzers with club soda. Different but I drank all of mine (great if you've been walking and need to rehydrate) and finished out with the poured water. At this point our waitress - who wasn't proficient in English - had to find someone else to wait on us after we started asking a lot of questions about the menu. Ordered and split the Vietnamese Hot and Sour Chicken Soup (Canh Chua Gà) ($15), Cousin's whole reason for the visit. HUGE bowl of soup with lots of chicken pineapple, celery, okra and bean sprouts. Served with a plate of rice we didn't even use. Could have served 4-6. NOTE: I wasn't in the mood for soup, but since Cousin wanted it and this was the only size they would offer, I ate some and we brought the rest home. Dinner was Vermicelli with Chargrilled Pork (Bún Thịt Nướng) ($12). Lots of noodles, just the right amount of mint, and fish sauce was up to you to add. Pork was nicely cooked, though honestly, flavor of the dish was better when I reheated the leftovers a few days later. Ordered a large egg drop soup to go. Not really like the Chinese version - had an extra flavor or spice I couldn't identify - but if you are not sold on Chinese egg drop soup, this version might be your thing. Dining at 9 roses was such a culinary experience! If you are looking to have an authentic Vietnamese food experience, I highly recommend making the trip out to the West Bank to dine here. We started off with the Spring Roll Grill and it was so delicious. They prepared all of the ingredients and we got both chicken and shrimp for our spring rolls. Additionally, we have one of the Moo Shoo pancakes and it was a new experience and new food that I tried for the first time. We also got the catfish dish with rice and had one of the hot and sour soups. They were so many options and this place felt so authentic to be able to try and explore different Vietnamese dishes. We were honestly very full with our first two dishes as a group of 4 and they were so generous with their portion sizes with affordable prices. I'm Vietnamese from San Jose by way of Oakland California. 9 Roses is 100 percent on point ! The flavors and the portions were all great. Service was very fast and the food came out quick. The area around the restaurant was very dark and a little like the beginning of a horror movie with flickering lights and all, but the inside is very nice. Both dishes were average. The flavors were outstanding. I got a glass of the Vietnamese coffee; it was pretty watery. The Mongolian beef got good taste from the sauce and well marinated. However, the meat to vegetables ratio makes this dish more of a vegetable and beef stir fried. The combination pho soup is very well done, but someone needs to explain to me how it's a combination. For a combination, there are usually 4-5 parts of beef but I only got three types of beef, meat, mostly beef fat and the meatball. The service was fine. Nice and clean table. Wow my last review is almost 11 years old! 9 Roses is still one of the OG Vietnamese restaurants in the GNO. I LOVE the chao tom (shrimp paste on sugarcane skewers) and you build your own wrap at the table. They also have a few Chinese favorites. Plus good vegetarian options. Service is good and the restaurant is always clean and the parking lot is easy to navigate. Accessibility for those in wheelchairs is also good. read more

Never come here unless you want bad food and horrible service. The lady on the phone was so rude. Anytime I ordered something her response would be "and ??" . She also hung up straight in my face when I asked how long it would take. She was also very rude when I went to pick it up in person. The food was mediocre at best. No flavor at all. WOW this place has probably one of the largest menus of anyplace in the New Orleans metro area!!! It isn't as large at it used to be but it is still quite extensive and includes items I've never seen at other restaurants in the area. They have abalone soup, various versions of pho, Chinese, Vietnamese, and several other Asian dishes thrown in for fun. The only complaint I've got is they don't offer jasmine tea like several other Vietnamese places do (maybe they do and I just don't know how to order it). I see more Vietnamese people eating here than just about any other place I've eaten in the area so maybe that means this is a really good authentic Vietnamese place. I really enjoy the food here and it is a really good value and actually just a downright cheap place to eat with fantastic food. No please or thank you, just "yeah... Okay...What you want?.. uh-uh.." that vibe. Food 2. The rice portion was smaller than my hand and not fresh. There was one shrimp. The chicken was hot and crisp but that sweet and sour sauce was way too thick and the eggroll was nasty. I can't say much more than that because it was just a lunch but I won't be back. I gave the 4 star review as an overall score for the restaurant, including past visits. If I were rating just this food and experience, it woumd be a 1. Let me start by saying that 9 roses has been a favorite vietnamese food spot of mine for over 20 years, back before they moved to their current location . I was craving mandarin chicken and happened to be on the west bank, when I saw they made it, my first thought is their vietnamese is great, I'm sure this will be good too. I was wrong. First, I was getting it to go, they informed me that the to go order does not include the soup, that normally comes with the lunch special. I thought, "maybe they don't have soup togo containers", until she asked if I wanted to order it separately. No change in the price for not getting the soup either. I reread the menu and it said it came with tea, which when I asked for it, they seemed annoyed. I drove about 15 minutes home, so it shouldn't be too different than what you would get with dine in. The chicken was overcooked and very chewy. The gravy is super bland and the egg roll was very greasy. The fried rice was pretty bland too. I will not order chinese there again, but will return for their yummy vietnamese food. Very disappointing for over $14. read more

I do think 9 Roses suffers a little in quality because they do too many things. With a menu this big, not everything can be a hit. I get better Chinese at restaurants that are specifically Chinese. Same with Vietnamese. I've never had anything bad here, but nothing is so overwhelmingly good that I go back for it. I go here typically if I'm with someone who likes Chinese but not Vietnamese so we can each get our preference. I just wrapped up my 5th or 6th visit to NOLA. This trip was different since I'd already done all of the tourist stuff and this time I was here for work. It's also the first time I've had a car in NOLA, which was totally liberating and really opened up a whole host of new food options for me. I'd heard that there was a fairly well-established Vietnamese community somewhere around so I asked friends in the know who directed me to Gretna and to 9 Roses. It's an easy drive right across the river, an easy 15 minutes out of the FQ. We arrived at 7pm on a weeknight and were nervous as we had no reservation and the parking lot was full. It was busy inside but they were still able to seat us right away. Like so many other places these days, they were a bit understaffed and the service was slow but wow was the food worth the wait. They have a huge menu of things to choose from. I saw other people eating pho, whole fish, and some kind of meat being grilled tableside. It all looked so good. The menu also has a number of less common Vietnamese dishes as well. The dish that I'm not soon to forget was the Octopus Salad. Slices of tender octopus are mixed with fresh herbs, onions, and crisp green papaya (I think!) tossed in a rich, umami fish sauce based dressing with citrus and a bit of chili. Crush in the provided shrimp crackers from the separate bowl and you've got the most flavorful, textured, savory, piquant "salad" you've ever had. (I could drink that sauce!) I also ordered the banh hoi nem nuong (grilled ground pork patties on pressed rice noodles) and really liked it. The meat was a bit more rubbery than I'm accustomed to, almost like a Chinese fish ball, but the flavors were spot on. This was not a small meal at all but a welcome break from all the heavy NOLA cuisine I'd been eating. I look forward to coming back here again on my next trip out. read more

After living in nola most of my life, I am so sad that I hadn't been here earlier. Love this place so much! The interior is beautiful and has plenty of open space. Service was prompt and the waitress was super friendly. But let me tell you about the pho. Wow, I have never had such tender beef flank in pho. It literally melted in my mouth. The broth was perfectly flavored, not too salty. The noodles were the best quality noodles I've ever tried in pho. We also tried the egg rolls which had the greatest crunch and flavor. Found this place on yelp looking for somewhere to get soup close to work. I ordered a chicken dish for for a coworker as well. When I walked in I noticed the place looked really nice. The calamari was TOUGH and relied way too much on the sauce for flavor The pork spring rolls were decent. The pho tai- my goodness. I'm sorry, but it had no flavor. NONE. This is one of the few Vietnamese restaurants in all the New Orleans/Metairie/West Bank area and unfortunately, it's not that great. My boyfriend and I decided to give it a try based on all the positive reviews on yelp. Food: I had the egg roll vermicelli and my boyfriend had the chargrilled pork with rice and we shared the Vietnamese crepe (banh xeo). Filling was super sparse in the banh xeo. And it was mostly all bean sprouts. The actual egg rolls were ok, not the best I've ever had, but the noodles were hard and off putting. Also, the bowl was more like 70% vegetables at the bottom and 30% noodles and egg rolls. My boyfriend had the chargrilled pork with rice and he said the taste was ok. The plate itself looked kinda sad to me. Service: slow/nonexistent. I saw my waiter a total of twice throughout the whole dinner: once at the beginning when he took our order and at the end when he gave us our checks. Atmosphere: apparently they just renovated the place. I don't know how it looked before but it's pretty spacious and the walls are colorful and "hip". At least the place was clean. I've come here before to try their pho and I wasn't very impressed with it and would recommend other places for pho but I went here recently to try their hotpot since we had a craving for it and it was decent but I'm not sure I would get it again. They have lots of different menu options to try so I would come back again to try they banh xeo and other Vietnamese items but so far I haven't been too impressed with their pho or hotpot items. Decent service and nice atmosphere for dining though. read more
