10/10 no notes! My niece and I were visiting New Orleans and knew we had to make a trip to Gretna for some Viet spots that we had bookmarked! We basically went on a food tour for this trip, so we only ordered the wings from here (even though we were hella tempted to order much more things from Tan Dinh!) The original plan was to try the nuoc mam wings, but after much deliberation with each other and input from one of the girls that worked here - we got the lemongrass wings as well. BOTH WERE FIRE. I enjoyed the nuoc mam ones more, but my niece liked the lemongrass more as they were a bit crunchier. The man thing I can say about Tan Dinh is that the lemon grass wings and Thai iced teas are AMAZING. That is the only thing my husband and I get when we go. It's so good there is no reason to get anything else. The wing portions are huge and the flavor is the best we have had. We briefly left the city for a while and mentioned these wings often. I haven't been to Tan Dinh in a while, so I decided to dine in when I had some free time. I really liked the seat-yourself service. I ordered the sweet jasmine tea, and I was a little worried that it might be too sweet, but the server told me they add lime to it to cut the sugar. It turned out to be very refreshing. I also ordered the lemongrass spring rolls, which had an insane amount of chicken and flavor. They tasted really good. I decided to try something new from the menu and ordered the salt and pepper shrimp with lemongrass sauce. Tan Dinh is consistently great. I started coming here in 2011 and it still a fantastic spot for Vietnamese food. I love the sweet rice cakes! The fact that there's an option to substitute white rice with the decadent sweet rice cakes is such a treat. They have a nice size vegetarian menu. I like the curry tofu and the spicy lemongrass tofu. Tapioca drinks are delicious! I also like that they offer a medium or large size options for the pho even during dinner service. The medium is already a nice size portion. They do not serve Bahn Mi, so you'll have to get your sandwich elsewhere. read more

Ga nuong - over rice, over noodles, doesn't matter. It's a huge portion! And so delicious. Their pho isn't my favorite. But my bf and his friends said their pho ga is one of the best. Suon rang muoi - this is a really good fried pork rib dish. It is VERY heavy to me. I cannot finish an entire portion. But the flavor is on point and the crunch in each bite is insurmountable! Ga roti - supposed to be rotisserie chicken, but I'm pretty sure it's fried. If you're not watching your cholesterol, i would def try this!!! OH my goodness such an amazing meal at Tan Dinh yesterday!! Probably the best Vietnamese food I've ever had! My friend and I were coming home from a long morning hiking and we were starving. We yelped good Vietnamese food on the West Bank and Tan Dinh was one of the top spots so we pulled in. We were a little surprised it was so packed at 1:30 PM but the dining room is big and we got a table immediately. Service was a little slow because there were so many people and not many servers but we were patient. We decided to start with the lemongrass chicken wings. OMG. We are both huge wing fans and we agreed that they were the best we've had in NOLA. There were also SO MANY on the appetizer plate. We split them and then were too full for our main dishes. And this came from two VERY HUNGRY people. We both ended up taking most of our bowls home. I got the vermicelli bowl with egg rolls and chargrilled pork which was GIGANTIC. It was also awesome!! After my previous go-to West Bank Vietnamese restaurant closed, I thought I'd give this one a try. They have a vegetarian section with a few flavors of tofu over rice or noodles, and I tried what seemed to be their signature lemongrass. The dish arrived with a massive amount of actual tofu, deep fried, garnished with a sauce full of actual lemongrass (it looks like small bamboo stalks cut into sections, and tastes lemony of course), and with more sauce beneath. The sticky rice cakes I ordered probably didn't make it any healthier-this was a very sugary dish-but it was all pretty delicious, and the dish did at least include some spinach and other vegetables on the side. For being in a nondescript strip, it was a nice, clean, but casual place inside. I often wonder about visiting restaurants at off hours, but they had plenty of business at 3 on a Saturday, and I got good service. I got a tapioca pearl drink, which most people there seemed to have ordered. They did not have the first flavor I wanted, nor the second that they offered me, which was a bit suspect, but the strawberry something or other flavor that I ended up with was perfectly satisfying. I haven't been here since before the pandemic, but I had a meeting on the West Bank, so I wanted to check it out again. I was disappointed. I ordered a medium bowl of pho and wanted two meats, flank and tendon, which isn't unusual at most Vietnamese restaurants. They said a medium bowl was too small to fit that, so I had to get a large one. It's true, there was A LOT of meat, almost too much to eat. More than I wanted. But the soup was watery and the spice was almost imperceptible. Also, the only herb was basil, no cilantro. I also ordered cha gio (egg rolls), and they came literally dripping with oil. I'm going to be honest: I probably would have made this a 4 star review, except my entree was phenomenal. We stopped in on a Saturday evening and were greeted by a lovely server. We ordered the chicken wings and some shrimp spring rolls to start, and then between us got an order of rare beef pho, some chicken steamed buns, and I got a small order of duck. The chicken wings were tasty and the meat was tender, though it still can't touch the wings of MOPHO. The spring rolls were pretty basic; I was looking for more fresh herbs and a bit more spice in the peanut sauce. The pho broth was rich and deep with the traditional Chinese 5 spice and lots of herbaceous notes, and the chicken was tender and juicy, served with briny and spicy kimchi. Both very good. But then I tasted the duck. Holy hell. For a small portion, it looked like half of the animal. The meat was cooked perfectly and very moist. The fat was rendered and the skin was slightly crispy and not rubbery at all. The seasoning of the duck was so good I didn't even touch the au jus, and just dipped my rice cakes in the duck drippings. I left with enough leftovers for another substantial dinner, and I have to say, it was almost as good on day 2. We left stuffed, groaning, and happy. Best duck I've had in a long while! read more

Some friends drove me over to the Westbank to try Tan Dinh, and holy cow!! This was easily my best dining experience of 2018 and it happened right at the tail end. The portions! The flavors! The prices! I am impressed. They have a vegetarian menu from which I chose the lemongrass tofu rice plate. Amazing. Huge chunks of firm, crispy tofu smothered in the most delightful spicy, savory-sweet sauce. They give you plenty of fresh fluffy rice, and the garnishes were highly edible--pickled daikon, cucumber, tomato, and baby spinach. My friends plates were equally epic, as were their appetizers. The spring rolls look rather unique and the steamed buns were soft and delicious. It's a large dining space but it's quite popular with the locals, so might be best to get a spot early in the evening. Prices are extremely fair for what you get--only $10 for the vegetarian entrees. Please do try the lemongrass tofu..a hint of spice but the lemongrass sauce is absolutely to die for (and I think I have discovered the secret recipe of a certain restaurant across the street after trying this dish). They seem regularly short staffed. Last time I went, the kitchen "lost my ticket". While scrolling through Eater's '38 Essential Restaurants in New Orleans, Spring 2022', we happened upon Tan Dinh. Thank goodness we did because it has become our favorite place for Vietnamese food in town! We split two main courses: the vermicelli noodle bowl with charbroiled pork and the charbroiled Korean beef short ribs with kimchi. Both were incredible and the portions were enormous. The vermicelli noodle bowl with pork is my go-to order, so I wanted to test how it compared to other Vietnamese restaurants in the area. I'm happy to say it did not disappoint! I usually find myself chewing lots of fat with pork dishes, but at Tan Dinh, the cuts were all meat. The vegetables were fresh and the noodles were cooked perfectly. Definitely recommend their peanut sauce and homemade chili sauce to top the dish off as well. The beef short rib dish with kimchi was also excellent. The kimchi had great spice and crunch, and when paired with the pork inside the bao, was absolutely wonderful. The short ribs were not too oily nor salty. The dish also came with a small soup, and given the flavor of the broth, I'm sure the pho is awesome. All in all, I give Tan Dinh 5/5 stars. We will definitely be returning and trying their pho on a less hot day. Definitely our new go-to place for Vietnamese! read more

After reading about Tan Dinh in the New York Times of all places. It was an article about the hidden gems of New Orleans. I knew that we had to give it a try. So, we headed to Gretna on the Westbank to dine Vietnamese style. Upon arriving, I could tell it was going to be good, there were all the signs of a good Vietnamese restaurant. The pungent smell of fish sauce, long row a table's pushed together with a large family dining. Good enough for the whole family. As I watched the kids at the big table play air drums with their chop sticks, I looked over the menu items. The menu is vast, but I found it was translated well. We started off with some Shrimp Spring Rolls and Chicken Wings with a sweet chili sauce covering them. Both were exceptional and I probably could have taken a couple dozen of those wings home with me. That would have been a meal to itself. But we were here to try more than just the wings. I ordered a Bun Bowl of shrimp and pork with vegetables and vermicelli noodles. Charla ordered the short ribs. Both were very large and easily shareable between a few people. The food was delicious, and portions were large. If you have never tried Vietnamese food this would be the place to go. The menu is well done in English and Vietnamese and the waitress was very knowledgeable. So come hungry because you get a lot of food. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. read more

First of all, I'm a New Orleans native and this is my favorite Vietnamese place in town, hands down (and that is saying a lot). The rotisserie chicken and sweet rice plates are out of this world especially. HOWEVER... Their takeout situation (important during a pandemic) is truly atrocious. I thought the first time I did it in the past few months might have been a fluke but this has happened every time I have tried ordering for the past six months. Here's what happens: 1) When calling in the order, phone rings and rings, no one picks up. 2) Upon arrival at a practically empty restaurant, the person working takeout says they turn the phone off when they are busy so they can help the kitchen. It was 6 PM and no one was in the restaurant. 3) When asked how long it would take for a takeout order for 3, I am told, "Maybe 45 minutes to an hour." Sorry, no way, I leave. It's a shame because the food really is fantastic and if I could call in the order 45 minutes ahead of time, I would be totally fine with that, but if they aren't going to pick up the phone, they just aren't going to get my business. And it's something you see with businesses every now and then, they really just don't seem interested in actually doing the things they need to do to MAKE MONEY. I really hope they don't close down, because their food (if you can get it) is slammin. read more

I had Vietnamese iced coffee and water. Friend had unsweetened iced tea. She ordered Pho with beef flank and I ordered shrimp vermicelli with egg roll. Both. We're. Amazzzzing. Omg I was so full but it was so good and now I want it again. I ordered Korean short ribs plate to go for dinner. Just had some and it is THE BOMB!!!!! I have to go to the West Bank for Korean food!!! Thomas was our server and he is super fun!!! The service was great, and FYI, you go to the counter to pay when you're done. The pho I had here was really delicious! I am not always a fan of pho, but the bowl I had was great! For about $11, I got a large bowl of the beef flank. They gave me plenty of meat, and the cuts were of quality (no fatty pieces). The broth was a little bland for me, but I loved it after I added the hoisin sauce! I've been eating at Tan Dinh for 20 years. It's one of my favorite places. I get the same thing every time. A couple of years ago, we moved to Mississippi but I still made sure I went to Tan Dinh whenever I was in town. I just picked up Tan Dinh to go on the way back home. I will NEVER order it again. It's twice as expensive, they give you half as much and everything about it is different. The egg rolls and the fish sauce both taste different. The vermicelli isn't even vermicelli. It's this micro-thin rice noodle that they lay flat and cut into squares about 3"x4". It's like edible astroturf. All of the veggies are on the side and uncut. Our lunch literally required 20 minutes of manual labor. I used to miss this place so much after we moved. Now I don't have to. read more

We were there about a week ago and they're just as good if not better than the last time. Holy cow the dumplings are GREAT!

I am the first to admit that I am no expert when it comes to Vietnamese food. In fact, I have only started eating this type of food in the last few weeks. Once trying it, I became an instant fan and had to try as many places in as short a time as possible. Tan Dinh was recommended by some non-Yelp friends as one of the best. Since they eat this type of food multiple times a week, I knew I needed to try it. The restaurant is in a small strip mall next to the Racetrac gas station. Inside there is a very large open dining room which was maybe only 1/4 filled when my dining companion and I arrived. Our server was very friendly. She was patient and explained the items on the menu very clearly since I was a novice. On the recommendation of my friends, we started with pork spring rolls and an order of fried lemon pepper chicken wings. The spring rolls were excellent. The pork was evenly dispersed through the roll giving a great grilled flavor. The peanut sauce that came with the rolls was very good and complimented the smokiness of the pork. The wings were perfectly fried, but I was not a fan. The sauce that came with them was a lime and pepper sauce, which in my opinion, didn't add anything to the wings. My dining companion loved them, so if you like fried wings, you may want to give them a try. My entree was the grilled pork and pate bahn mi. This sandwich was larger than the other versions I have had. It was loaded with pork, pate and vegetables. The pork was smokey and tender. The addition of the pate was interesting and surprisingly good. Having never had pate as part of a sandwich, I was a little nervous, but it worked well. I need to eventually try something other than bahn mi and spring rolls. Once I do I will have to retry and re rate all of these businesses. Until then, I will keep Tan Dinh in my rotation. read more
