Bourbon chicken
Von W.

How in the world does this place get 4.5 stars? For years I've passed by this restaurant and never had a desire to drop in. However, the pandemic is really impacting the quality of our go-to Chinese spot (i.e., Chinese Tea Garden, of course), and we were looking for alternative sources. After researching Yelp, we decided to try Hunan, solely based on the reviews. Oh, Yelp. These reviews remind me of a trip I took to NY a few years ago and almost every restaurant I went to, based on Yelp reviews, was a disappointment. So, are locals reviewing Hunan? I don't think I'm a food snob, but I do have standards. And this ain't it. We ordered the bourbon chicken, General's chicken, and shrimp fried rice. The best thing were the egg rolls. They were fried golden and had a decent flavor. They were a bit one note, though, with mostly all cabbage and 1 or 2 shrimp. Why do I think most of these restaurants buy this stuff frozen and all they do is heat it up? Anyway, the bourbon chicken didn't look like chicken. That was the first strike. Secondly, it didn't taste good. Strike two. The General's chicken was slightly better, but didn't taste like anything like General's chicken. The shrimp fried rice was just ok. Strike three and four. Next!

Curry chicken and chicken lo-mein
Mina H.

I got the chicken lo mein and curry chicken from this restaurant. They were both delicious and averagely priced for the area. I might have found my new favorite Chinese take-out place! The lo mein tastes almost pan fried. It wasn't drowning in sauce, but the flavor was all in the noodles. The curry was yummy too, with the vegetables not being overcooked at all. The chicken was plentiful, soft and tender for both dishes. They didn't skimp at all! The curry here was not very spicy, so be sure to ask for extra heat if that's what you're into! Pick-up was quick (15 minutes for the food to be ready after placing the order), easy and pandemic-safe (a small window to accept your food and pay for it, so you don't have to go into the restaurant at all). My only complaint is that the neighborhood seems a little dicey. I went to pick-up my food with my boyfriend close to 10pm, and I didn't feel completely safe. (Nothing happened though!) I would probably not choose this location to go to alone at night as a young female. I'll just go pick-up for lunch!

Solid, casual Chinese American cuisine w massive portions and super friendly staff. The area is kinda sketchy but it's close to my job and it's quickly become my go to spot as it's open pretty late.

Shrimp and broccoli combo with egg fried rice.

I was craving Asian food literally of any kind and I was scrolling through Yelp and stumbled upon Hunan Wok. I couldn't believe it because honestly I thought it was just a place that my home city had so because of the great experiences I've had back home I decided it was the best I could get on such short notice. I must admit they were pretty ok! Pricing was 10 and some change for the broccoli and shrimp combo (side of rice and an eggroll. Yes i know it's not in the picture but I scarfed it down before it ever had the chance or be included in the trio). The flavoring wasn't bad. Just needed a little more seasoning with Salt and pepper. Luckily they have a parking lot (thank goodness because I get tired of street parking everywhere). I ordered online so once I got there I got my food pretty quickly. Overall not a bad spot and I'd definitely give them another try in the future.

Egg Drop Soup

This place is becoming a Christmas tradition for me! I love the fried wings with teriyaki sauce on the side, the egg drop soup is yummy and a side of Steamed Shrimp Dumplings. I prefer to call ahead and pickup. Definitely won't disappoint!

They deliver with third party services. Pretty pricey and not the same prices that are on website. Food was just ok.

I came across Dian Xin and it felt like a tiny oasis from the heat, humidity and bustle of the French Quarter. I ordered a variety of dishes to try and everything was great. The standout for me was the cucumber salad. Fresh, cool, zesty, spicy and crunchy - just what I needed to beat the heat. Loved the Hong Kong wonton soup as well as the tiny pan fried bao. I'll be back to try the soup dumplings and spicy wontons next time! Service was quick and pleasant and the food came out fresh and steaming. I've eaten here before and the food is decent, which makes this experience even more disappointing…read more I ordered a dish with shrimp and simply asked to substitute broccoli for the rice. When the bill arrived, I noticed I had been charged extra for the broccoli and also charged for shrimp--even though shrimp was already the protein included in the menu item I ordered. I politely questioned the charge, and the explanation I received didn't seem to match what was stated on the menu. I then asked to speak with a manager so the issue could be addressed. After quite a bit of discussion in the kitchen, the server returned, but instead of a manager coming out, I was given essentially the same explanation we had already discussed. I calmly explained why the charges didn't make sense and expressed that I was unhappy with how the situation was being handled. Unfortunately, there seemed to be little interest in resolving the concern or retaining my business. The food is fine, but my advice is to carefully review your bill before paying. Based on my experience, management does not appear particularly concerned when customers raise billing issues.

Back again in NOLA for more R&D, I chose to reside in the Garden District to also explore an area…read moresomewhat away from the general tourist population swarming the French Quarter. This week I wanted to visit spots successfully catering to locals and stumbled upon this tiny neighborhood hidden gem. Hidden because one would have easily missed it repeatedly when driving (or walking) past since the whole exterior was so unassuming at first glance. It only showed up on my radar when I meticulously searched for seafood spots on different platforms and randomly stumbled on their Facebook page. Best boiled crawfish and shrimp it said. Always fresh it exclaimed. Decently priced it stated. Well, this I had to go see it for myself and put to test. This was obviously a detour from my planned R&D in NOLA but was definitely a spot that must be designed for locals (and random tourists like me). This was confirmed immediately when I stepped in to see a long line of construction workers from the nearby site picking up lunch and some young kids digging into bags of shrimp and crawfish in utter delight. While looking at their sharpie streaked menu, I noticed quite a number of customers striking up conversations with the lady behind the plexiglass like long lost friends as they too picked up food to-go. Yeah, definitely a local friendly spot. Shrimp and crawfish by the pound was CHEAP in comparison to all the places in the area I've been. The best part? After getting back to the AirBnB, I realized just how good and fresh the seafood was! Succulent, very well seasoned, and not severely overcooked (like some spots around here prefer to serve it). I could taste the spices and aromatic vegetables used in the boil and found each bite absolutely tonguegasmic. Came for a pre-lunch snack and now back for a pre-dinner snack. Both the lady and gentleman had a smirk and muffled giggle as they saw me again. "You like it?" No, I love it. I'm here for a week and I'll be back every day you're open until I fly out of here. Take my money and give me thy awesome shrimp!
