I've been hearing about Maypop Restaurant for sometime but hadn't got around to trying it until now. I came with a few co workers after work. We had reservations and we were seated upon arrival. Some of my co workers were hesitant about the menu as the dishes were very unique and not what you what find on a "standard" menu. I didn't see anything that I wanted to try immediately on the menu, but ended up choosing something with shrimp, because shrimp is always good! We were all wrong and were super impressed by the dishes that we ordered. I got the Crispy Friend P&J Oysters and a Shrimp dish. The flavors were delicious and the portions were perfect such that we were full and had no leftovers. My husband and son discovered this restaurant when they were in New Orleans without me but they couldn't stop saying how much they enjoyed it and more importantly it was one of the very few places that accommodate dietary restrictions such as vegan, dairy free, vegetarian and more. A couple months after their trip, my hubby and I were back in town and I was excited to visit here. Sometimes I get nervous if my husband over-hypes a place because I get let down but not this time. I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed an amazing meal. I mentioned to our adorable waitress that I am dairy-free (tough in NOLA) and don't eat beef. Not only was she ready to recommend dishes but she knew all sorts of substitutions and then she came out with papers that address all kinds of food restrictions and allergies. THIS PLACE WAS READY ! The menu.... oh my goodness, the menu is unique and creative and delicious; like combining then local typical cuisines with asian. And if what you order isn't enough, they bring samples of other dishes for you to try ( I assume they make a dish for one table and have extra, perhaps). AND they didn't forget my food issues; when they brought out a taste of something, they had a substituted dish for me. A large group of us tried every single dish on the a la carte menu of the restaurant, including dessert. Overall, I was very impressed with the quality of the food, especially as someone who would typically not enjoy Asian fusion restaurants. The groups overall favorites were the shrimp and grits, which were ranked as one of the best bites we had throughout a few days of eating in the city. I recently visited Maypop for the second time and I was pleasantly reminded of how good the food is there! My friend and I went as soon as they opened at 4pm and were able to order from the happy hour menu. We were the only people in there for a while so we were served quickly and our waiter was very helpful with recommendations. We ordered a Tattersal Spritz, spicy margarita, 4 of the hot sausage steam buns, the roasted sweet potato, the chicken wings to start. When I say delicious, I mean it! The hot sausage steam bun was the most delicious thing I've had in a while, the sweet potato came in second place. We couldn't help but to order dessert- we did too much. We ordered the peach bourbon ice cream and the Ube cheesecake ice cream which was phenomenal!! Literally the best! We're so glad we chose to come here. This is a modern fusion restaurant with a well-thought menu. My family and I were able to get a last minute reservation at this place. We got the nuoc man caramel glazed pork shoulder, lobster tom kha with scallion malfatti dumplings, spaghetti with coconut crab broth, louisiana black drum, milk tea creme brulee, and fried cereal milk custard! Dinner here was a truly incredible experience. We dined on a very cold Tuesday evening. We did not have a reservation and were still able to be sat quickly at a wonderful table. The atmosphere was relatively dark but chic and sleek. There were a few large parties when we dined but it did not affect our service or experience at all. This menu is unbelievable. I honestly had the hardest time deciding on what to get but we landed on the Roasted Bone Marrow, Nước Mắm Caramel Glazed Pork Shoulder, and the Lobster Tom Kha with Scallion Malfatti Dumplings. We also opted for two cocktails, the Tom Khallins and the La Abeja, both delicious. While waiting for our appetizer we were given Curry Beignets as a complimentary gift from the kitchen. These were unreal! Crispy fried with a creamy curry center. The Roasted Bone Marrow came out next and what a beautiful dish. The bone marrow was savory with a bite of acidity from pickled onions, covered in flavorful light curry sauce and served with warm roti. Our two main entrees were wonderful. The pork shoulder was tender with crispy skin! The Tom Kha was so so good, huge pieces of tender lobster, incredible umami wild mushrooms, and perfect pillowy dumplings. This was ALMOST a miss for me but turned into a hit. My companion and I made a reservation on OpenTable for 6PM. We wanted to dine here before going to the Pelicans game. We were promptly seated and then we sat for 15 minutes before anyone came to our table. For fear of never being attended to and missing the game, we elected to leave. I stopped by the hostess stand to let her know our plans and the lovely hostess apologized emphatically and brought us water and put our server on notice that we were there. She also offered us an appetizer on the house for the inconvenience. Our server, Josh, was also very accommodating and took our order right away. We went with the octopus app and it was DELICIOUS. I was afraid it would be too sweet because of the satsuma flavoring but it was PERFECT. For my entree, I had the Lobster Tom Ka and it was SO good! The portion was small but paired with the appetizer, it was perfect. My date had the pork entree and I tasted it and it was also excellent. I've visited New Orleans at least 10 times over the past 5 years and I've only just discovered Maypop on this recent trip... how did I not see you on the radar? I was in town with my adult son and he wanted something unique and we came across Maypop on a walk to the grocery store... nice layout and decor (modern with industrial and asian flair). When we got back to the hotel, we took a look at Maypop online and were learned their flavor concept is a fusion of SOUTHERN---and---ASAIN; odd to process at first but looking over the menu and were were impressed enough to make a reservation for that night. We arrived on a Sunday night for our 8:30PM dinner reservation and we're pleasantly surprised to see Sunday night so busy... but our table was ready. We ordered their ANNATTO SESAME ROLLS; served with Cultured Butter and Shellfish Pepper Jam... yes, I said Shellfish Pepper Jam and before you begin thinking fishy jelly, let me just clarify then Jam was delicious. Right after delivered the Rolls, another server came by with a complimentary sample dish... I don't recall exactly what they described but for the most part it was a "SAVORY" VERSION OF A BEIGNET (rich and moist and not sweet by any means) and it was served over a Remoulade (it was seasoned and almost like a Crab Remoulade). As delicious as the Beignet was, it was the remoulade that shined. We even asked our waitress to place a full order of these Savory Beignets BUT they don't have them as a menu item (but I wish they did). My son ordered the LOUISIANA BLACK DRUM OVER BUTTERNUT SQUASH PURÉE... I didn't have to ask if he loved his dish; it was obvious. The fish had the skin over but it was done with crisp skin but the rest of the fish was soft. I had a hard time choosing since so many dishes were interesting but I ended up going with the server's suggestion, SPAGHETTI IN A COCONUT CRAB BROTH. Oh my, it was nothing like a broth... way too rich and thick (not watery). It also had Louisiana Blue Crab and Braised Leeks. Loved my dish. The serving sizes are not huge so we "THOUGHT" we'd be able to get dessert but the food is VERY RICH and as much as we wanted to see what amazing things they can do with dessert, we were just done. MAYPOP didn't take no for an answer so for the second time during this dinner, they presented up with "another taste". This time it was a very small taste... very small as in the size of my thumbnail; no kidding. I've been severely disappointed with the food in New Orleans, and honestly this was the only/best place I went to on my 3-day trip! A lot of places were greasy/salty tourist traps, but this was refined dining that creatively fused Asian and southern food together. The fried drum (fish) was crispy and the butternut curry was warm and balanced. The coconut grits were a little too plain, but we also like their caramelized sweet potato on the HH menu. The service was great, and one of the managers even came out to provide a list of more food recs since we mentioned our disappointing experience thus far. While I had high expectations for this restaurant, I didn't expect it to be hands down, the best meal of my entire trip. Amazing southern fusion in a beautiful setting with a cool vibe. Everything on the menu is a winner and the cocktails are great too. We started off with the fried oysters; there's a bit of Asian fusion to the style and presentation, and the oysters were perfect, not greasy and the right amount of batter. The Tom yum was definitely the star - not too creamy but just enough to pair well with the gnochetti (nicely al dente). The andouille added a nice smokiness. Vindaloo wings did not meet expectations....it wasn't flavorful/intense and spicy like what vindaloo usually is. Also the wings were dry and not saucy enough. This place is a revelation. Whenever my wife and I come to New Orleans, we are coming primarily to eat, and this place is perfect for breaking up the routine of the raw oysters, heavy Creole seasoning, and fried seafood. The ambiance is a mix of dark industrial with plant tones here and there, would make for a good date spot except it's a bit loud. You needed a reservation on the night that we went as we saw several parties walking out discouraged by the lack of walk-in availability. Now onto the food: Curry beignet w/ tom yum cream cheese - WHAT?! The beignet itself was pretty good but completely overshadowed by the maddeningly craveable CC. I had to get more of that addictive CC for the next dish. Sesame annatto buns - freshly baked dinner rolls that come with whipped butter and shellfish pepper jelly. Again, WHAT?! The pepper jelly is an incredible flavor bomb (arguably my wife's favorite bite of the meal) but also needs the rich creaminess of the butter, and the buns themselves come fresh out of the oven and are so, so good. Tuna kinilaw - essentially Filipino ceviche with a little coconut milk, great contrast to the richness of the other dishes. Grilled romanesco cauliflower - good char and great orange tapenade, again necessary to cut through the fat of the heavier plates. Nuoc mam caramel glazed pork shoulder - this was the dish on the menu that convinced me to step in the door. The exterior of the meat is nice and crispy while the interior is fork tender; the seasoning is both sweet and salty, and definitely needs some carb and some acid to mellow out the strong but delicious flavors. Coconut crab spaghetti - the flavors of this dish hit me like a truck. It's similar to uni (sea urchin) cream pasta but with the texture of more al dente spaghetti and obviously replacing slightly briny uni with the mild and creamy coconut plus delicate and sweet crabmeat. Probably my favorite dish of the night. Fried cereal milk custard - the mochi-like fried cereal coating around the surprisingly solid milk custard, with a small pool of passionfruit preserve sitting on top, are banging as a whole; I found the miso cremeux milk crumb to be too salty even when consumed with the other components of the dessert, and the ice cream could've used just a bit more lemongrass to help it stand out a little more. Pot de creme - faint hints of coconut and pandan in a light and airy chocolate dessert of whipped pudding consistency. My wife typically doesn't care much for chocolate but she liked this dessert a lot. Not as sophisticated a dish as the other dessert, but it hit in all the right places. This place completely redefined how Southeast Asian flavors should or could taste in our minds. Will we be back when I return to visit New Orleans again? Absolutely. read more

My girls and I were on our way to the Super Dome to catch the game and decided to stop along the way for breakfast. Our first choice was packed so we tried Maypop, which was at the other end of the block. The hostess was very nice and sat us right away. We got there at the right time because the place filled up soon after. Maypop has become quite popular for its contemporary dishes that fuse together Asian, Italian, & Cajun cuisines. Dressed in our game day attire, an upscale Dim Sum Brunch wasn't quite what we had in mind. Turns out we weren't the only one's sporting jerseys. Alexis asked if we had any food allergies and then suggested menu items based on that. After she took our order she brought us a little lagniappe - complimentary Thai Curry Beignets and a sliced radish topped with pickled veggies. The beignet was light & airy and the curry sauce complimented it perfectly. These were so good we wanted a bag full to take with us to the game. Our drinks arrived, and I was a bit disappointed. As our first full day in New Orleans was coming to a close, I thought - why not end it off with an upscale, Southern-Asian fusion restaurant. We made reservations in case it would be too busy, but there were quite a few empty seats on a weeknight. Usually I would be skeptical about Asian food in an area I am not very acquainted with. Not to mention this was a Southern and Asian fusion restaurant. Very unique, and don't think I've ever encountered anything like it. Everyone was attentive and we were seated immediately at our arrival. The inside was dimly lit. The restaurant itself is upscale, modern, and had a beautiful dual-sided map of both Southeast Asia and New Orleans (it was something that kept catching our eye). Here's everything we ordered: Tom kha cocktail: I can't say that I'm a big cocktail person, but this seemed to be a very unique take on one. Maybe it was me, but it kind of tasted like coconut milk with a bunch of alcohol and a dash of lime. If you're like me and like sweet drinks then maybeee order something else. Curry beignets: These were free, and an absolute surprise! They were very nicely fried on the outside and the curry filling was spicy. I think it came with some kind of spicy cream cheese? I know it sounds different from other things but the heaviness of the cream cheese and the savory beignet just worked. Lobster tom kha with scallion malfetti dumplings: As you know, I love lobster. I had to get this dish. The tom kha was very rich compared to other tom khas that I have tried. They definitely use a lot more spices. There was a good amount of lobster and the malfetti dumplings were delicious. They were kind of like gnocchi in a way. The roasted cherry tomatos, cilantro, and scallion in the soup itself balanced out the richness of the broth. Amazing! I finished this dish very quickly. Nuoc mam caramel glazed pork shoulder: If you're Vietnamese, this is basically just a fancier, sweeter thit kho which, to be fair, is a pretty big compliment. The pork was so tender. You could just bite into it, and it would melt in your mouth. The glaze wasn't too sweet either. We ordered a side of jasmine rice (which had toasted coconut flakes) and complemented the pork shoulder very well. The fried pork skin added a great textural component, though I'm not sure why the red beans were really there. Definitely order rice with this dish, since it's not included (it should be!!!). Fried cereal milk custard: We ordered this because we wanted dessert (lowkey to make up for the cocktail) and this stood out as the most unique one. It was good. The fried milk custard portion was the most satisfying bite because it was like a super soft mochi. The ice cream was good too, and it wasn't overwhelming with lemongrass flavor. Maypop is such a solid place in NOLA. I will not spend too much time describing my food and drinks as the menu has been completely different the 2 times I visited. I will only say that the food is absolutely top notch and flavorful. Each of us ordered an entree and another item to try as an app. Not one bite was boring or bland. The drinks were well crafted and the Pinot noir we ordered off the menu complimented the food well. The service was great and the vibe of the restaurant was super chic. I stopped in here for a quick dinner last night, as I am in town for a conference. Good reviews on yelp let me to choose this spot, and I'm glad I did! I was flying solo, so I don't have a wide range of dishes to discuss. I started off with a signature cocktail, the Tom Kahlins . Sort of a coconut infused take on the original. It was good... The first sip was the best, seemed to lose its intensity as I got down to the bottom of the glass. I wish it had come out earlier... I was about halfway through my salad by the time the drink arrived. The bib salad was delicious, wonderful, coconut infused dressing. Only drawback was that the bowl it was served. It had a very large crack in it. Seems like someone should've caught that in the kitchen. I had the caramelized pork shoulder entrée, and it was amazing! I never thought a Cajun and southeast Asian fusion would be the successful, but it really is. Amuse-bouche and a little treat after dinner made for a nice touch. Server was knowledgeable and attentive. I will definitely go back and try some of the other things. read more

Maypop's food was SOO good! We had the tasting menu, and were so full after. It was 7 courses + dessert. Each dish was such a unique fusion of different flavors. My personal favorites were the cambodian marinated ribeye and the black garlic carbonara. We made a reservation for a Friday night, it was pretty busy. Service was great, our server was so wonderful and kind. I would def come back one day! read more

Mày pop was an absolute gem of a find and I'm so glad I stumbled upon it in NOLA. This was such a great meal with Southern x South East Asian flavors that brought me back to my time living in Singapore. I was delighted by the curry butter and pate choux amuse bouche and absolutely LOVED the lobster Tom kha 'dumplings' dish. I was totally expecting Asian pleated dumplings with lobster inside but instead it was an actually a play on the southern dumplings! The dumplings were soft and fluffy and had Parmesan inside. I opted to order this with warm roti bread and loved dipping the bread in the deliciously creamy and sour Tom khá soup. I was a solo diner and the front desk and waiter were all very kind to me and I appreciate the waiter taking his time explaining the dishes to me. If I ever find myself in NOLA again I will definitely make a trip back to Maypop . read more

Ok so if you're looking for an Asian fusion type Nola meal. This is the spot. It's pretty underrated in my opinion. Worth checking out if you're in Nola. All the food has a slight sweetness to it. So if that's not your jam you'd want to avoid this spot. The pork and fish were standouts. Service was fast and friendly. Chill vibes. read more

OMG-this place was amazing! Great ambiance and open dining area. Loved the butter lettuce salad-such great flavors in a simple salad, my Husband ordered the crab pasta dish and shared a bite which was quite memorable (unfortunately I was eating light and didn't order an entree). But I did finish with the crème brûlée and that was a nice taste treat for sure. Great spot, we walked in on a Wednesday night early-6ish and as the evening progressed, it got packed. We had heard tremendously good things about Maypop from a variety of different sources. When selecting a restaurant for our one-night stay in New Orleans, we knew we needed to pick a good one. We had one shot to get it right; luckily, I think we nailed it. Here's what we had: FIELD PEA MASALA HUMMUS WITH LITTLE EGGLANTS Pickled relish, crispy peanuts, coconut, mint ** This was a very elegant plate. A totally unexpected hummus presentation - definitely not your grandma's hummus (is there such a thing?) ... you get a smear of hummus topped with the pickled relish and the tiny eggplants. The flavors went so well tell. Very unique! Was it as indulgent as a big ole platter of hummus? Well, no, but I still loved it nonetheless. CRISPY FRIED OYSTERS Bourbon barrel soy aioli, manchego cheese, spicy cucumber ** Another lovely plate! These oysters were crispy and savory. The spicy cucumber was nice and refreshing with a bit of heat, and the smear of bourbon soy was a gorgeous sweet/salty contrast. Very nice! BREAD SERVICE ** We did opt for the bread service. Not much to say about 4 rolls in a cast iron skillet except they were verrrry good and super soft! Worth the addition. WOK FRIED TAPIOCA NOODLE WITH JUMBO GULF SHRIMP Turmeric curry, daikon salad **I liked this much more than expected. A beautiful pasta. The texture wasn't weird like I thought it would be. It was so delicious; an elegant comfort dish. WOK FRIED STICKY PORK SHOULDER Nuoc mam caramel, mirliton som tam salad, roti bread ** OMG, this was amazingly cooked and so tender and flavorful. Could not ask for a better ending to the meal. We had wonderful service, and the restaurant itself was very pretty. This is definitely one to come back to, especially if you like southern Asian food with a twist! read more

Came to happy hour here and soon as I hit the door, the staff was very friendly and accommodating. They made great conversation and answered my questions. The restaurant is very aesthetically pleasing. The food was unique and delicious. My favorite was the hot sausage steam bun, it wasn't greasy like a Patton hot sausage, and the steam bun was so pillowy and delicious. Definitely give this place a try if you haven't been yet! read more

NEW FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN NEW ORLEANS. I had an incredible time at Maypop on a Monday night. To start, we had the Roasted Marrow Bone Topped with Georgia Peach Curry... ugh probably my favorite dish of the night. The roti was light and flaky. The bone marrow had incredible umami flavor that paired well with the fresh peach and greens. After, we had complimentary savory beignets with a curry paste. Absolutely delicious. For our meal, we had the Pork Shoulder, Spring Onion Malfatti, and Bread Service. Wow, wow, wow. The malfatti had incredible coconut flavor and was perfect with the bread service and roti. To finish, we had two dark chocolate caramels. I was so stuffed after this meal and my tummy was very pleased. I will come back in a heart beat! read more
