She remembered us the second time and asked why our daughter wasn't with us. When we told her she was busy with a school event Ms. Shirley packed up a full order of dumplings (on the house) because she remembered how much our daughter enjoyed them. Lets talk vegetables...fresh...fresh...and fresh!!! Ambiance is upbeat and clean, people overall seem happy to wait to get a table because the majority of those that we spoke with are return diners. That in of itseld speaks volumes to the loyalty we locals have for Ms. Shirley! Many of us have been fans of Ms. Shirley since her ownership of Royal China in Metairie! Ms. Shirley we hope you see this review! You are like the friendly grandmother that so many of us miss in our lives! Thank you for feeding us from your heart!

The wait was worth is because we had a great time at Miss Shirley's. Once we were seated we were brought dumplings, I couldn't have any because I'm vegetarian but I appreciated the quick and complimentary plate! I would say there was about as many vegetarian options as I thought there would be, which is a moderate amount. I didn't really like the vegetable dumplings (pictured with the skewers through them) mainly because I just didn't know how to eat them. I think if we had received chop sticks I would have enjoyed eating them more but having to use the fork was awkward. The sauteed tofu was the best thing I've ever had at a Chinese restaurant, I've been thinking about it frequently over the last 24 hours. Even if you aren't vegetarian and if you've never had tofu before but been curious - you have to start there. Or actually don't because no tofu will ever compare haha! From my non-vegetarian dining partners: the xiaolongbao that came on the mini swings was yummy, the crab meat shu mai could be skipped, the chicken was delicious, the fried shrimp balls are a must have, and the gyoza was good. We also were surprised with mini beignets at the end of the night! I thought that was super cool and they were delicious!

Fresh ingredients; Very good portion for under $6. Their Mongolian beef is okay (3/5). The beef had a chew to it but the flavor was decent. Service was wonderful and while the server does not know much about how food is prepared, she knows what she likes there and warmly recommend what she thinks is good to us. We appreciate that.

I came across Dian Xin and it felt like a tiny oasis from the heat, humidity and bustle of the French Quarter. I ordered a variety of dishes to try and everything was great. The standout for me was the cucumber salad. Fresh, cool, zesty, spicy and crunchy - just what I needed to beat the heat. Loved the Hong Kong wonton soup as well as the tiny pan fried bao. I'll be back to try the soup dumplings and spicy wontons next time! Service was quick and pleasant and the food came out fresh and steaming. Give it a try for something a little off the beaten path in the Quarter!

I've eaten here before and the food is decent, which makes this experience even more disappointing…read more I ordered a dish with shrimp and simply asked to substitute broccoli for the rice. When the bill arrived, I noticed I had been charged extra for the broccoli and also charged for shrimp--even though shrimp was already the protein included in the menu item I ordered. I politely questioned the charge, and the explanation I received didn't seem to match what was stated on the menu. I then asked to speak with a manager so the issue could be addressed. After quite a bit of discussion in the kitchen, the server returned, but instead of a manager coming out, I was given essentially the same explanation we had already discussed. I calmly explained why the charges didn't make sense and expressed that I was unhappy with how the situation was being handled. Unfortunately, there seemed to be little interest in resolving the concern or retaining my business. The food is fine, but my advice is to carefully review your bill before paying. Based on my experience, management does not appear particularly concerned when customers raise billing issues.

We can attest that they sell the best shrimp-fried rice in the New Orleans area (with really big shrimp)! General Tso chicken is delicious too. We've ordered other items but these are our favorite. Last night we took the journey by foot through the french quarter to get here. It was a rough walk but that's not Zhang's fault. That's just New Orleans. So the only negative comment I can give them is location. Yal it's hard to get to. When we arrived, we were immediately directed to sit where we wanted. The restaurant smelled tasty! Our server came out quickly and brought us water. After placing our order, our food was brought out pretty fast and it was piping hot. Tonight we ordered our usual, General Tso's chicken and shrimp fried rice. We decided to share both entrées. The shrimp fried rice was delicious! We did not need to add one pinch of salt or dab of soy sauce. This meant a lot because we frequent Japanese and Chinese restaurants and it has been awhile since we had fried rice that was seasoned well. Also, the shrimp in the fried rice were large. If you have ever had Hibachi shrimp, that is the size of the shrimp in this dish! The General Tso's chicken was perfect. It was crunchy yet covered in the Tso's sauce which was sweet and savorly flavored. Even the white rice served with the chicken had a good flavor. The vegetables were also cooked perfectly and flavored well. Checking out was easy and there were no surprises on our bill. Zhang's does have more expensive prices for its fried rice dishes but you really do get what you pay for. Trust me, we have shopped around and I've only found one other place that has fried rice with a similar flavor and it's on the westbank. We haven't tried the full menu but we've been pleased with all of our basics that we normally order. Also, Zhang is an "Asian Bistro" so there are items on the menu that go beyond those of a traditional Chinese restaurant. If you are staying in the quarters, this is the place that you want to go to for some good Chinese food.

Spicy Szechuan Hot Wok - this was my favourite 5. Coconut Soup with Tofu was so good Overall our experience was great. I'm not sure why did this restaurant have an option of either we can only have veggies or only tofu? I mean I have never seen it. Veggies are in the dishes regardless and the choice of protein is what is optional so that is something which I was not happy with honestly. (That's why 4/5) The service was good, our server was very warm and friendly. The ambiance was good too.

Back again in NOLA for more R&D, I chose to reside in the Garden District to also explore an area…read moresomewhat away from the general tourist population swarming the French Quarter. This week I wanted to visit spots successfully catering to locals and stumbled upon this tiny neighborhood hidden gem. Hidden because one would have easily missed it repeatedly when driving (or walking) past since the whole exterior was so unassuming at first glance. It only showed up on my radar when I meticulously searched for seafood spots on different platforms and randomly stumbled on their Facebook page. Best boiled crawfish and shrimp it said. Always fresh it exclaimed. Decently priced it stated. Well, this I had to go see it for myself and put to test. This was obviously a detour from my planned R&D in NOLA but was definitely a spot that must be designed for locals (and random tourists like me). This was confirmed immediately when I stepped in to see a long line of construction workers from the nearby site picking up lunch and some young kids digging into bags of shrimp and crawfish in utter delight. While looking at their sharpie streaked menu, I noticed quite a number of customers striking up conversations with the lady behind the plexiglass like long lost friends as they too picked up food to-go. Yeah, definitely a local friendly spot. Shrimp and crawfish by the pound was CHEAP in comparison to all the places in the area I've been. The best part? After getting back to the AirBnB, I realized just how good and fresh the seafood was! Succulent, very well seasoned, and not severely overcooked (like some spots around here prefer to serve it). I could taste the spices and aromatic vegetables used in the boil and found each bite absolutely tonguegasmic. Came for a pre-lunch snack and now back for a pre-dinner snack. Both the lady and gentleman had a smirk and muffled giggle as they saw me again. "You like it?" No, I love it. I'm here for a week and I'll be back every day you're open until I fly out of here. Take my money and give me thy awesome shrimp!

Sometimes that's just how travel works and you cross paths with unexpected gems. The owner and his family couldn't have been nicer. This place has been around for over 30 years, a mix of convenience store and local eatery. The owner, an older Asian gentleman, warmly asked me and my husband where we were from as soon as he saw us. We think maybe because there aren't many Asian in the neighborhood and it instantly felt welcoming and we started to chitchat. His son was helping in the kitchen that day, and the guy taking our order (super friendly, too!) turned out to be his son-in-law, just stopping by on his day off. This place is small but we could tell most of the steady stream of takeout customers were regulars. We ordered about $50 worth of food: * C2 Fried Chicken (10 pcs) - $11.99 * P6 Shrimp Po'boy (12") - $5.99 * P8 Catfish Po'boy (12") - $7.99 * R5 Cajun Gumbo - $8.99 * Two cans of drinks It felt special that on our very first day in New Orleans, we got to try two of the city's most iconic dishes: Gumbo and Po'boys right here in this humble neighborhood spot. The fried chicken was super crispy, the Po'boys were packed with filling, and the gumbo was flavorful without being overly salty. We couldn't finish it all, so the leftovers became our breakfast the next morning. The shop itself is nothing fancy, just two folding tables and a few chairs but the food and the warmth of the people made it one of those memorable stops that really stick with us. We actually came back on our last day in New Orleans and wanted to try the Yak-Ka-Mein Soup which was recommended by the owner but it was closed on Memorial Day:( I guess we will save it for our next visit. If you ever find yourself in the area, I'd highly recommend trying their food. T&T Seafood & Po-Boys 548 Jackson Ave, New Orleans, LA 70130
