This is my mom's favorite place. The owner is such a sweet woman who is always friendly and takes good care of my mom when we dine here. Service can be slow sometimes because of the lack of workers so be patient. This is one of a few places that serves a whole fish that you can order with two types of sauce to choose from but since it was just myself and my mom, we decided to go with the Ca Kho (catfish clay pot) and the Canh Chua ( catfish soup) and the shrimp and eggplant lunch special. We also had the clay pot fish, combo fried rice, and wonton soup and everything was well seasoned and great portions. They're usually slow on the inside, but we saw a lot of takeout orders. There's one thing my mom and I usually come for here and it's the stir-fried egg noodles with seafood (mi xao mem). It's not often we get to come here because my dad doesn't care too much for it. So when dad's out of town or at work on a Sunday than mom and I take the opportunity to go where we want to eat for brunch. It's a pretty quiet place to eat unless you get your usual big party table. They do hold wedding receptions here every so often. But usually Sunday's aren't too busy around 11:30-12ish. Mom had the stir-fried egg noodles and I tried the chicken with orange rice. The orange rice was something different to try and I really enjoyed it. The chicken was seasoned well but was a bit dry in some areas. More than enough food for me so I took the rest home and had it later that evening. There menu has a variety to choose from. So it could be overwhelming if you're a first-timer and indecisive as to what you want to try. The rice places is something I've had often when I'm there as well as the stir-fried egg noodle. I'd recommend one of the two. Wish I could dine there often with my mother. Give it a try if you're looking for some good Asian food. read more

I am always open to trying new places, especially if they happen to have Vietnamese food on the menu. I had passed this place bunches of times throughout my life on the Westbank and I always wondered about it. I finally decided to stop in. First of all, don't be intimidated that this place is located in a super sketchy strip mall. Yes, there was a weird guy lurking outside of the place when I went. No, he didn't bother me. Just walk with purpose and you'll be fiiiiiine. The atmosphere of this place is great. I love that it's wide open and you can even rent it out for parties! I went shortly after normal lunch hours, so it was empty when I got here. I seated myself and looked over the extensive menu. You should know that this place has a lot of choices- both Chinese and Vietnamese. They have everything from classic Chinese dishes such as lo mein to Vietnamese yums like pho, vermicelli and banh mi. I already knew that I wanted some cold spring rolls and pho with rare beef, so that's what I had. I love that the spring rolls come 4 to an order. It works out for sharing and guarantees that everyone gets their fill. The pho was great! I got the small bowl, which turned out to be perfect for lunch. The broth had a lot of flavor and there was a nice, generous serving of meat, which made it perfect. I loved this place and I will definitely be back. They are closed Mondays, so be aware of that. This little gem is hidden in a questionable shopping center. I have seen it countless times while driving by but never stopped in to check it out. It's been in business for the past couple of decades at least, so it must be doing something right. I decided to venture there yesterday with family, and we tried a few things off of their menu. We had our junk food fix with their "Bo Bo Tray." The portions was generous. All the fried things were cooked to crispy perfection. The shrimp toast could have had a thicker schmear of shrimp, but whatevs. We then had the salt and pepper lobster. It was quite tasty but was a tad too salty. The breading used made the lobster crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The house special hot pot was also wonderful. The broth was light and refreshing. It contains all kinds of goodies including shrimp, beef balls, seafood balls, imitation crab meat, Vietnamese ham, pork skin/rinds, and little quail eggs. We also had a plate of stir-fried greens which were good but not exactly worthy of any descriptions. Overall, I was pleased with the visit. My family have enjoyed this place for the past few years now even before Katrina. The food is delicious and the staff are friendly. The menu is huge, so you can always find something to eat. I don't recommend going here an hour or so before they close, because the food is awful around that time. I understand people wanna hurry up and leave, but that shouldn't be the case. I just had to point that out in case someone want to visit that place around closing time. That's the only reason I didn't give it 5 star. Try their ice tea it's great! read more

In this hard time during this economic crisis I decided to support some of the restaurants that I usually go or buy food, today went here and order a steak with vegetables, it was not good at all, I paid 10 dlr for that and I can barely see 5 pieces of steak and veggies was basically a lot of celery and broccoli, the sauce with no flavor, I been here before the pandemic and wasn't like this, so I feel they trying to recover the money giving their customers less food for more price that's NOT RIGHT, imnot coming back here at all ever, now they lost a regular customer. Man I really wanted to like this place because it's so close to my house but my experience was not a good one. The food looks good in my picture but the battered shrimp are not cooked all the way and the batter is gooey on the inside. I'm super disgusted when I realized after pulling one out of the goo they ARE NOT deveined. And they are too fishy tasting. Ugh I'm just too grossed out. I would probably give this a 4.25 or 4.5. After not being able to eat at Tahn Dinh, we ended up here. I'd been in once before and asked someone eating there how he liked it. That was probably a year ago. Walking in, the first thing we noticed was how bare the walls were. Very sparsely decorated. The carpet was in horrible shape with deep stains and rips. Having said that, the floor was clean (It had been renovated into a venue). We started with crab rangoons. They came out looking like most of the other place's rangoons. However, these were obviously made by someone who cares how rangoons should taste. No K-rab in these babies. Real crab, little bits of green onions chopped in and good cream cheese. Frickin' great. Could eat three orders and be happy with life. Really excellent. I ordered the Chinese moo shu shrimp and the girly, for reasons only known to Girly, ordered shrimp and pig bacon (She never likes Viet dishes...weird girly). Her dish came out and she smelled the fish sauce. She doesn't like fish sauce, but that girl always seems to order Vietnamese food chock full of the stuff! Anyway...My moo shu came out smelling awesome. Sadly, I didn't get to eat it. The Girly took one smell of hers and pushed it away. SO while she ate my dinner, I dug into hers. Both were really excellent and I have no regrets. Service and delivery of the food were both fine. The price of the moo shu was great. The pork and pig bacon was a bit over-priced but still quite good. The girly wants to to go back...that says a lot for a woman who usually doesn't like many Asian restaurants. I have been eating Three Happiness since I was old enough to eat! The owners know my family and are very kind. Service is great, and they always know our orders. The restaurant was really beautiful and always crowded before Hurricane Katrina. It saddens me that things are not the same. The decor is very plain. However, the food has not changed. I'd recommend Egg Drop Soup, Banh Hoi Thit Nuong, Banh Tam Bi Xiu Mai, Canh Chua, and Ca Kho Tho. The egg drop soup is a delicious appetizer my siblings and I always enjoy together. I always have to ask for more crackers though, and the shape of the crackers are inconvenient because you can't use it to scoop the soup. The Banh Hoi Thit Nuong is my all time favorite. You have to request for it to come with rice paper, cucumbers, and pickled vegetables. I love rolling it into spring rolls. It comes with fresh leafy vegetables a nuoc mam. Banh Tam Bi Xiu Mai is delicious, but it sometimes comes out colder than expected. I used to eat it like crazy as a child. The coconut milk gives it a sweet yet savory flavor. Canh Chua Ca and Ca Kho Tho go hand in hand with my family, and it is my grandma and grandpa's favorite meal, especially during lent. The Canh Chua is not too sour, despite its name, and goes perfectly with plain rice and the strong flavors that com with the Ca Kho Tho. All my Ca Kho Tho's are compared to the one here. It is cooked in a clay pot, which is how it should be. The sauce is caramelized and thick, coating the pieces of fish with a spicy and sweet flavor. read more

Growing up in the inner city, I developed a pretty niche taste for take-out Chinese food. I'm not talking about elegant sit down restaurants with tea served from handle-less china cups or Peking Duck served whole on a platter (like the Jung's Golden Experience). I'm used to ordering through bullet proof glass from a tiny room with dingy linoleum tile and 6-8 ripped up vinyl chairs. It was not a 'dine-in' experience. But the food it was good. MSG? Probably. But the fried rice (what I consider a staple for take out) was always always always good. No matter who you ordered from. SInce moving to New Orleans, I have had difficulty finding Chinese with that flavor profile. I used to LOVE GREEN TEA on Magazine (they were perfect, with the added treat of being able to eat in) but they're gone. I have tried Yum Yum (gross), Red Star on Earhardt (getting closer...), Manchu kitchen (too far away, not really a Chinese take out menu, but their fried rice is great) and here on the Westbank, Golden Wings (LOVE EM...but somehow always seem to miss their open hours). So it was a rainy Sunday night and I didn't want to stray too far for some Orange Beef. The reviews for Three Happiness all looked good, so I walked in to order takeout. FIRST POSITIVE SIGN: There were Asian people eating there. That's always a good sign. SECOND POSITIVE SIGN: They had the Steelers game on. Nice. They understand the importance of work/life balance =-D THIRD: The two ladies behind the counter were busy, but BOTH acknowledged me with warm smiles and advised they would be right with me. So I had a seat. I turned around and there was a HUGE family having a dinner party. At least 20 people dining at a large table. The space seemed big, but empty (I'm guessing it's because they had pushed together at least 4 or more tables to accommodate the dinner guests.) I picked up a menu to review. They had limited Chinese food options (the basics...Gen's Chicken, Beef Brocc, Lo Mein, etc) but an extensive Vietnamese selection (so we will DEFINITELY check that out on a future visit and update the review). I ordered Gen Tso (Christopher...don't hit me lol!) and Orange Beef. The food was prepared quickly. SO...home...we opened the containers and really couldn't tell the entrees apart. They were breaded the same, and appeared to have the same sauce. The rice was meh. It probably had the requisite trinity (carrots, peas, onion) but I couldn't see it. The entrees were decent, but definitely a bit on the saltier side. I'm guessing that previous highly rated reviews were based on their Vietnamese selections, so I'm not discouraged. Prices were VERY reasonable ($17 for both) and they came with an egg roll. read more

After reading reviews here, I visited Three Happiness Thursday. Now, it is Saturday and I've been to the restaurant three times. The food is delicious and the service is amazing! The staff is very friendly and attentive. When I dined at Three Happiness, I was thrilled with the restaurant's cleanliness. When I ordered takeout, I was astounded by the generous portion sizes. More importantly, the prices are unbelievably reasonably. So reasonable that I leave a comparable tip. All in all, I love this place. I think I am just going to give up finding good Chinese food in the NOLA area. I recently has dim sum at a place in Monterrey Park, CA which made me want to try and find some in my area. Then I saw a FB ad saying Three Happiness was awesome, so I gave it a try. Not awesome. Perhaps their Vietnamese fare is better but I won't risk trying it again. The Hot and Sour soup is RED like Sweet and Sour sauce. For my lunch special, my 3 Happiness Lo Mein contained 2 pieces of beef, 2 pieces of chicken and 2 shrimp all is a sauce that tasted of too much soy sauce barely cooked corn starch. It taste like poor quality meat and overcooked veggies in a tired brown sauce made by people who have no inkling what good Chinese food tastes like. read more

I came here for lunch and was pleasantly surprised by the lunch prices and selection. I believe that they are in the middle of a remodel and looks like a large open space and stage inside of the dining room. The décor could use some upgrading, but the food was really good. I can usually pride myself on finishing large meals, but the amount of general's chicken for the lunch portion was outstanding. I hung my head in shame as I asked for a TO-GO box. Recently, our"go-to" Chinese restaurant has not been up to par, so we tried 3 Happiness. What a pleasant experience. Service was efficient and friendly, but not overly so. Food was HOT, which is a good start. Then, its was really quite good. My lo-mein was delicious - chicken, shrimp and beef all tender and without any suspicious textures. Fried rice was a bit bland, but I remedied that with little effort. Over all, very good. We'll be back! read more
