My Girlfriend has a kitschy streak to her and wished to "Eat German in a German town." I was hesitant to indulge this wish and feared we'd be stuck eating microwaved chicken pot pies on our anniversary night, but I reluctantly agreed and we found "Otto's" to try. Otto's, as it turns out, is more than just chicken pot pies and Oktoberfest Lagers. In fact, I don't even think they have those things. We started with the $6 bread appetizer and were genuinely surprised when it came out as a large serving! After our entrees arrived, it became clear that Otto's has no interest in following the unwritten "Fine Dining Establishments Serve Small Portions" rule. My Duck Schnitzel came with delicious cherries, pasta, a cabbage sort of thing, a fried egg, AND a substantial portion of a duck. So if you're a value driven eater like myself, you can pay $26 for an entrée at Otto's without feeling the deep emotional pain that other restaurants' prices inflect you with. Otto's for lunch is also a great prerequisite to the Pacific War Museum. Walk across the street afterwards to burn not only your Otto calories, but the calories you've collected over the past 2 weeks (It's a rather large museum). Great food, service and experience! First time visiting Fredericksburg and Otto's was a place we saw on Texas Eats. So we decided to try it while we visited the town... food was amazing! I ordered their Chicken Paillard & husband ordered the Pork Paprika Schnitzel. And both dishes were absolutely delish! The chocolate torte to finish was excellent, very decadent but beware, the cherries have liquor in them. We also tried their Hibiscus Mule and it was good, spicy and refreshing! We will def have to come back and try other of their dishes. Great first experience! Things to note: call ahead and make a reservation. They take walk-ins but you may have a long wait. He gave us three recommendations on appetizers, entrees and dessert. All three were amazingly delicious. Kudos to the Chefs and wait staff. We decided to stop by to check out this place, while visiting Fredericksburg. We didn't have plans or reservations. It was early on a Friday evening, and got lucky to get a small table upfront. We ordered the flat bread as an appetizer and we both ordered the duck schnitzel. It's a breaded duck breast, topped with an optional fried egg. It's really a great combination. For an upscale German restaurant in Fredericksburg, this is a great place. Set in a quaint house on a walkable side street. Had the fish, duck schnitzel, and sauerkraut balls. The fish was good, but my friend was pescatarian/vegetarian and there was bacon in it, so make sure you request vegetarian if you are vegetarian. We made reservations on the patio for the evening since we had our dog with us. It was a little cold since we weren't seated next to a heat lamp, I'd recommend dressing warmly if it's cold outside. The service was kind, but a bit slow compared to what I'm used to. They also didn't really check in on us as often as I'd like (like to refill water). As for the food: Flammkuchen - they were out of bread and butter so we got this, $10 more! It was very tasty, just wish it were a tad thicker. I know Flammkuchen is supposed to be thin but this was just veryyyyy thin. Wurst plate - I really liked the wurst and the mustard, though it's not my cup of tea for a main dish. Chicken paprikash - I just felt the chicken could have used more flavor, and was a bit dry. The sides were ok... Jägerschnitzel - I would absolutely get this again! The meat was cooked perfectly and was crispy on the outside without feeling oily at all. Also looooved the Käsespätzle and red cabbage. The ambiance was fantastic & Otto's has cultivated an amazing blend of German food in a modern atmosphere! I feel that blend isn't captured in many other places! I really enjoyed the food & drinks as it was well made & very unique! We visited in July. On our way into town, my partner and I searched for a farm-to-table restaurant with omnivore offerings, and Otto's popped up. We were not able to secure a reservation on-line, so we placed a to-go order via Toast. When we arrived to pick up our to-go order, the amazing hostess secured us a walk-in space on the comfortable patio. The waiter graciously set our table and offered drinks since we had not ordered those. Within moments, our plated food and beverage arrived. My partner ordered the seared tuna and raved about its preparation. The red pepper sauce was delicious and the temperature perfect. I ordered the Otto's salad, which included fresh lettuce, delicious beets, chèvre, and quail eggs from our waiter's family farm. I also ordered the fresh brot, which came with butter, yummy beet jam, salt, and pepper. As it was my partner's birthday, we splurged on desserts. He had the cambozola cheesecake with spiced peaches, and I had the ever-so-rich Shokoriegel with Brandie's cherries. Both were rich and delicious. Service was great and my brunch meal, the Grosser Fruhstocksteller was amazing. The fresh homemade sourdough toast was topped with beet jam. It was delicious (having not had it before) and so was Otto's wurst! If I am ever here in Fredericksburg ago , this is where I would come again! AMAZING. I've been to various parts of Germany 4 times and lived in Berlin for 1 month and this is the only restaurant where the schnitzel is on par with the overseas version. The duck schnitzel is the best I have ever had. Usually I avoid duck because it's a little oily, but I don't know what they did to this, but it was not oily and very flavorful. The purple cabbage and dumplings that accompanied the meal as well as the cherry topping (I know it sounds like it doesn't fit but it does) all were amazing. I also tasted the beef medallions, sausage, and trout. Everything except the trout was pretty good, but nothing held a candle to that schnitzel. Don't get the trout- it has zero flavor. read more

We thought Otto's was about average. We had 3 entrees: duck schnitzel, jagerhuhn, and seared salmon. The chicken was a rather small piece when compared to price and sat atop mashed potatoes. It was good, not spectacular. The salmon was okay as well, maybe a little fishy and had the grey skin on it. The duck schnitzel was very crispy. I felt like there was nothing over the top about it. Flavor mostly from the batter but wouldn't know it was duck necessarily because just had a chicken fried steak vibe. Added the egg on top as well. The had the pretzel appetizer which was good. As for service it was fair at best. Never had a refill or was asked if needed on and we all sat with empty glasses for a while. Our food sat on the ledge to be delivered for a while before we got it. Convenient location, reservations were easy to make and we were seated just a few minutes late. We had selected outdoor seating which was the downside of the night. Our table of 2 was seated right between two large (6-8) parties who were very loud, and when they lowered the plastic window coverings we literally couldn't hear each other at all. We ordered the bread appetizer - the bread may have been fresh, hard to tell since they toasted it. But the presentation with butter, beet jam, salt and fresh ground pepper was very nice. Our meals were tasty, the mushroom strudel had a lovely tangy chèvre and a side salad of arugula with crunchy pickled onion, a perfect compliment. The kraut and schnitzel were made in-house and generously portioned. The service was good but not outstanding our server was a bit short with us and we noticed his fingers inside the glass as he served water and drinks in order to carry more. Precursor: I'm from New York and have visited many "high end" restaurants. I have never written a negative Yelp review. Came to Otto's after a Sunday at the wineries with my Wife at about 6:00pm. With 2 people waiting and about 5-8 empty tables, the young host put us on a "maybe" list, even though the restaurant is open till 10pm. Tried ordering a bottle of wine at the Bar while we waited only to be rudely steered back to the host stand where he could take my order. Waited for about 45 minutes only to be seated outside with a ton of flies around and all over our food. We were handed a battery-operated fan to keep the flies away (it didn't work). My Wife and I watched them turn away customer after customer prior to 8:00 pm with half the restaurant still vacant as they were "no longer taking walk ins" as of 7:30. This should be marketed as Walk Ins only on Sunday nights if this is how they want to do business! Sadly the food was good, we ordered the Duck Schnitzel and Pork Schnitzel. Solid food, really poor experience. First poor experience I've had in a restaurant in probably 3-5 years - we are grateful people and not at all complainers. The employees at this restaurant were operating at a different level of rude. My family and I had a wonderful dinner here on a busy Saturday evening, and fortunately we were able to snag a table even without reservations. I had their Ricotta Gnudi which definitely hit the spot. I loved the soft pasta with the butternut squash alongside the crunch brought in from the pepitas. It's definitely a dish I'd order again. We had a large party and tried most of the menu. The schnitzel was the best thing on the menu for us. The flatbread was okay. The short rib was dry. The ambience is very trendy, dark colors, indie music in the background. The worst part for me was when the receptionist stopped by and said our party was larger than expected and needed to be out before the next party arrived. This wasn't preceded with any greeting (hi, good evening, welcome). It garnered a "..." from our group. I'd worked out the party size with Otto's weeks in advance so I don't know where the miscommunication came from. After getting multiple recommendations from a dear friend, we finally gave Otto's a try for Sunday brunch, and it was a great experience! Reservations are hard to come by and walkups even more so, but we scored one for Sunday morning right at opening time, and were promptly seated on the patio. Starting off with drinks, my girlfriend and I both went with the Corpse Reviver 2, a classic cocktail from the pre-Prohibition era, and it's a perfect brunch companion. We also had coffee to help offset the alcohol :) Moving on to the food, this place follows the "do a few things, and do them well" philosophy. We opted for the two dishes plus a starter of sorts, as follows: Cinnamon pastry with whipped butter - A well made cinnamon roll with a delightful glaze with orange peel, garnished with a strawberry and raspberry, and whipped butter with a sprig of mint. This was a nice pastry, fresh and hot, a nice start to the meal Wurst platte - This dish featured a sausage that was much more like a chorizo than a typical German link, but was juicy and delicious nonetheless. Served on a bed of mustard, saurkraut, and German potato salad, it was also topped with curry sauce and garnished with thinly sliced sweet pickles and pea tendrils. A bit of a fusion type dish, but very good. Duck schnitzel - A very popular dish here based on other reviews, and for good reason. Featuring a generously sized duck breast with a deep golden brown and delicious crust, the dish also featured sweet pickled red cabbage, spatzle, cranberry chutney, and pickled peppers. We opted for a duck egg topper, which brought a delicious sunny side up garnish. The duck was very tender, juicy, and delicious, and a great pairing with the chutney. The spatzle was a bit interesting, with a cream or cheese based sauce that wasn't traditional and didn't add much to the dish in my opinion, but it was still a nice addition. This was a wonderful meal served on a delightful and intimate patio. This should be on your short list if you visit Fredericksburg! read more

The salmon spread app was average but the Flammkuchen (flatbread with candied bacon, caramelized onion, arugula, Gruyere cheese) was excellent. We shared the duck schnitzel which was plentiful for 2. It was some of the best I've had (even in Germany, Hungary, etc). Thick, moist, not greasy, perfect breading and flavor. Desserts were huge and delicious. We knew we had to get a reservation at Otto's when we came back to Fredericksburg and are so glad we did!! The food was even better than six years ago. We both loved our plates. The duck schnitzel with an egg was delectable and the spaetzle with cream sauce was oh so good. I'm so glad we finally got a chance to visit this place, everything was amazing! We came for Sunday lunch and I just realized they have different menus for Sunday brunch vs dinner. But the food was still wonderful, we got sat quickly (2 adults + 1 stroller :) ). We had eggs benedict and Wurst Und Eier, finished up with the popular Cambozola Cheesecake. Everything was just beyond delicious. The staff was also friendly and very nice. I had a 3 month old baby with me and they didn't have a changing station in the ladies' room. Hence they instructed me to go to the restaurant next door (same owner) and we got my baby changed so quickly.
