We had dinner at Rathskeller Bistro on a Friday night. The feel is ok. Somewhat modern for a German restaurant. Our waiter was nice, but when we got there, someone took our drink orders. He was nice, but didn't know how to take our order. My other half ordered a German beer and they gave him an 8 ball glass to drink it from. The food was ok. Yes, just "ok". My sausage was dry, the cabbage was good. The potatoes were also good. The jager wasn't very good according to my other half. The sauce was basically mushrooms in a brown gravy. The burger was also good. I don't think we'll be back but it was worth trying. read more

First time dining here. It was a plan B pick actually but had an A experience. Served quickly with a kind server. Cool little basement space that's bigger than you'd think from the outside front. My daily special 14 oz pork chop was fantastic. The cherry chipotle sauce is delicious. Spot on kraut and tasty bacon green beans. I didn't try my wife's dish but she finished it all so I assume it was good! She said it was very different then other pasta dishes but in a good way so consider that. My husband and I tried this cute restaurant today, for lunch. It is below street level and it was a cool, welcome option for a hot day of shopping and sightseeing. We were excited to eat here for the first time. The restaurants is really unique and clean. My stuffed eggplant was good not great. My husband had the jaeger schnitzel and it was only okay. I also ordered a peach margarita and was disappointed to see them take a premixed bottled out of the cooler and pour it over ice. This is a brand that's easily bought at the grocery store for pretty cheap. I was expecting more from a peach margarita in Fredricksburg, known for their peaches. Service was okay but I think that our server had more tables than what she needed in order to give each table more attention. Totally not her fault. The wife and I decided to drive up to Fredericksburg today to get out of the house. After walking half the strip, we decided to try our Rathskeller Bistro which is in the basement of Das Küche shop which is an old hospital. I ordered their Bloody Mary (spicy) to start off with a class of water. It was really good The wife ordered the Turkey Bacon Melt with fries. She only ate half the sandwich and pulled the velvety cheese off because it wasn't really melted into the sandwich like she wished it was. I tried it and it was kind of plain but tasty. I think the sandwich would have been much better if the cheese was melted into the sandwich and they used provolone or pepper jack cheese. So only 3 stars for this sandwich. I had the Kraut plate which came with two halves of two different sausages and a small portion of jäger schnitzel, German potatoes, pickled beets and sauerkraut. I absolutely loved this plate and I highly recommend. Oh and the stone ground mustard was really good! It will definitely clear out your sinuses so go lightly. This bistro is located right on Main Street in the heart of Fredericksburg. The food was nice and fresh in this quaint basement restaurant. It was my first time dining underground, and I didn't mind it. The staff helped us right away and answered any questions we had. The food came out quickly and was fresh. We had a West Coast Benedict, which I can recommend. My wife had biscuits and gravy, which were also delicious. The pancake left much to be desired. It wasn't a fluffy conventional style pancake, but a dense and well plated style. This might be a German style, but I have no idea. This wouldn't keep me from visiting again. They serve Coke products via can, for instance hose who look for that in reviews. Overall I would definitely try this place for a no wait friendly staff with fresh products for breakfast read more

Fun place to eat if you enjoy history. This restaurant is in the basement of an historic former hospital. This area of the basement was formerly a morgue! Writing this makes me sad as I've been wanting to try Rathskeller for a while. I ordered the hill country dip sandwich (French dip). It was way below mediocre- bland and tasteless. The worst part was the menu said it had cheddar cheese on it. Instead, I was greeted with the unnatural, obnoxious yellow of sliced American cheese. It made the sandwich taste like plastic, which, to its credit, was the only real flavor. The au jous tasted like watered down beef broth without any actual flavor. The ONLY edible thing on my plate was the sweet potato fries which were actually pretty good. My sons ordered schnitzel, which was decent, but a small portion and not as good as others you can get in town. Suffice it to say, I won't be back. read more

What a perfect place for a Rathskeller! Going below ground in Texas in the old hospital building is a brilliant way to stay cooler in the Texas sunshine. The wine and the German food was delicious and we've eaten food all over the world and we really enjoyed our meal. Check it out on main in Fredericksburg. They also have a terrific breakfast too . We were looking forward to this visit, planned it out to be our late lunch. The hostess just pointed to a table, no greetings. They came by and basically tossed the napkin/ forks on the table. Then another person asked what we wanted to drink? They didn't speak English so we had to go to the fridge and point what we wanted. I had the fettuccine alfredo for $13, and it came with a small breadstick. I did not opt to add $6 for chicken. I finished the whole plate, and I was quite full. It was good. I tried my friend's pasta crudo, which was considerably worse as the canned tomatoes tasted very canned, and the pasta was watery. I enjoyed the sweet potato fries. Rathskeller was recommended by one of our guest's family members, and it was a cute little place located down a flight of stairs. Our group of 8 was quickly seated in the back of the restaurant. Our servers were really friendly and made some good recommendations for those asking about the wine selection and the food. The menu is pretty diverse. It's far from a German restaurant, though they do have some traditional dishes from that region. I was leaning toward a sandwich but the Hill Country Crepes were recommended. The dish was pretty heavy on the cheese. The dish was really just a different type of lasagna, so it was not what i was expecting. The crepe was stuffed with a lot of ricotta and there was a heavy marinara and cheese bake on top. It was served with a side salad, but the heat of the baked dish wilted the lettuce. Everything was okay, but i didn't finish it. Others in our group were pretty mixed on their meals as well. Overall it was just okay. Cute ambiance and nice staff. First off, I love that it's underground. Simple joys! The staff was great and the food delicious. Fair warning, the beignets are quite heavy. I haven't had too many different ones yet but these definitely seemed on the thicker side and are very filling. Yummy, but filling. I prefer the lighter types. The West Coast Benny was awesome and the home fries were definitely a notch above! I was so stuffed leaving that we had to take half our mimosa carafe to go. Get there early right when they open. The history is what brought us to this restaurant, but unfortunately, the food will likely not bring us back. We dropped in on a Monday evening, and despite a lot of traffic on Main Street, there were only a couple of other tables seated when we arrived. Since they don't have a full bar and we were pretty much "wined out" from a tour earlier in the day, we opted for tea and soft drinks. First up was an avocado crab dip, which turned out to be the highlight of the meal. Served with freshly fried tortilla chips, it was quite tasty and contained a good amount of crab meat. It wasn't really like guacamole, it was more like salsa with avocado, but either way, it was nice. Things went downhill in a hurry after this. I ordered off of the daily special menu, selecting the corn meal encrusted red snapper, and my girlfriend chose the wurst platte. Upon arrival, I remarked to myself that the fish looked like it had been plated at a cafeteria, and it didn't improve when I dug in. Accompanying the fish was baby carrots that at least had some crunch, but the only real flavor was a bit of sweetness. Rice looked interesting, but had no real flavor. The fish was the biggest disappointment; it was mushy, and did not taste like anything at all, making me question if it was even snapper at all. There was very little corn meal, and the sauce, which was very thin and scarce, tasted only of salt. I ate a fair amount of the fish just to get some protein but it was not great at all. The wurst platte featured two wursts which were about average in flavor, but not what I'd expect from a place that claims "German food" on their website. Kraut had some bacon in it, which, while non-traditional, was actually nice and was probably the best part of the plate. German potato salad was sweet and didn't really stand out. A small schnitzel stood out, but for the wrong reasons: It was a little tough, overcooked and very low on the flavor scale. All of this would have added up to a three star review if not for the price; the fish was shown as "market price" on the menu, and I foolishly didn't ask. It turned out to be $20.99, which was outrageous for what I received. The bill, with no alcohol, was over $65, for a mostly forgettable meal. This was definitely a swing and a miss. read more

Rathskeller in German means "basement restaurant or tavern", and that's much of the fun of eating here. Thick stone walls and a warren of small dining rooms make the place feel cozy, in an ancient sort of way. (Warning: getting in and out requires navigating a flight of stairs.) Food, and service, is AOK but not spectacular. I found the wienerschnitzel on the thick side, but really enjoyed the warm potato salad that came with it. The Keidel omelet, apparently named after an early citizen of Fredericksburg, was chock full of sausage and fresh spinach. It supposedly included Swiss cheese but it was not gooey and chewy - more like a Swiss queso. The fried potatoes that came with it were nice and crispy. The only miss was the biscuits and gravy, which had an odd flavor that I couldn't quite put my finger on. If you want breakfast, it's served exactly between 9 and 11 - don't snooze or you'll be ordering from the lunch menu. read more

The location is so cool as you traverse down a flight of stairs on the side of a building and enjoy dining in the basement. Now don't freak out, it is super bright and cheery with a big window that is lit by an opening in a street grate. The food is fantastic and the prices are affordable. The employees were super friendly and we really had a nice time down here. We were in town on the New Years weekend and we had a super hard time finding a place that was actually open.
