I absolutely love Orient House! I have been going here since I was a kid and have always had such a great experience! The food is amazing and the soup is my absolute favorite! The number 2 on the lunch menu is the best garlic chicken and noodles you can get! If you try the ice cream you will want to come here just for it too! Pistachio is my fav! Haven't had it in a bit! Just started eating and already disappointed. The chicken teriyaki and yakitori are both the same exact meat with some teriyaki sauce thrown over it. The chicken isn't awful but overcooked and no flavor at all!! Tempura has way too much batter on it and just another disappointment At this point I just want to pay my bill and leave. Not good. The women working are nice but that's the only saving grace about this place!! Ugh I won't ever come back. I should have just gone to Starbucks for a coffee which was my original plan!! Another plus is that I can take the chicken home and rinse it off and give it to my dogs for a treat! It has no other flavor on it - obviously just boiled or baked with nothing and then doused with teriyaki sauce. Blah!!! I use to come here all the time about 2 or 3 years ago with my old roommate, it was our favorite friend dinner date restaurant. I kind of forgot about it but last week was in the area, remembered it and decided to call in an order for take-out. I used the menu on their website and with some quick math figured it would be roughly 24 bucks. When I went to pick up my order, I was told that my total was $34. Which was a bit jarring because all I got was a dragon roll listed on their website for 8.95 & the teriyaki chicken dinner which was listed as "served with Miso Soup, and Steamed Rice Choice of Any 2 items for 12.95" but at this point, I just assumed the website was wrong. I asked for a take-out menu so I could know going forward the correct prices. They didn't have any, which was unfortunate but at this point, I just wanted to go home and eat some delicious food. So I paid the bill and even tipped because.. apparently I'm too nice. When I got home and opened up my food is when the real disappointment set in. The dragon roll was literally the smallest roll of sushi I have ever seen. Maybe 8 pieces and I am not kidding when I say that they were a tiny bit bigger than a quarter. It was so weird because I have eaten here before multiple times and this was not what they were serving a few years ago. The worst part about the sushi was that it had no taste whatsoever. The teriyaki chicken dinner was also really bad. The chicken tasted like those kits you get a grocery store. Fake to say the least, and the sticky rice was overcooked to where it was just mushy. I will say the miso soup was good, so I guess that's what my one star is for. I hate leaving bad reviews but I was really irritated about paying 35 bucks for something I could have spent 15 bucks for at the grocery store and would have actually kind of enjoyed. read more

First time at Orient House. Immediately we were warmly greeted so I knew we would be well taken care of. Husband and I love Japanese food so we've tried a lot of Japanese restaurants in Modesto. First impressions are: very friendly staff, but not annoyingly overfriendly like some places. Very nicely decorated - once you walk in it doesn't look like your typical strip mall restaurant. Classy and comfortable. Food - I ordered the Yaki Udon and my husband ordered Katsu Don. This was our first time ordering these dishes anywhere, we usually order sushi rolls, but wanted to try something different. FOOD IS AMAZING! I especially liked my husband's Katsu Don. Prices are very reasonable! And their miso soup is delicious. Can't wait to try their sushi rolls and Chinese food. We will definitely be back! Just ordered take out from Orient House after trying it for the first time last week. Amazing once again! My boys had Chinese food (sweet and sour pork combo #1) and California roll and gyoza. Came here with my boyfriend on Friday I got the almond chicken it was really good and what he got was good too We are defenetly bringing our kids here next time! The servings are huge so they can both split a plate and me and him will get Sushi! It was sooo delicious too! Husband got the bento box w/ teriyaki chicken, teriyaki salmon. SIL got garlic chicken combo, her friend got orange chicken combo. The food was good! The combo comes with the soup of the day, egg drop soup : water chestnut, peas and carrots: Now, the garlic chicken, whoa, it comes with lots of garlic! Need a mint after eating! Haaa. This was my first time going here. The food was ok, rice and chowmein was dry, my almond chicken was good. I will not be going back. I paid my bill with $2.20 change due back. The lady did not bring it so I asked when I got ready to leave if she kept it for the tip and she said yes. Every bite was like if I had stood next to the chef while he made it piece by piece adding the most detailed work in a single piece and serving it fresh to me on the spot. Next the waitress came with our Beef Curry which welcomed us with a wave of sweat curry aroma. My tummy rumbled in response to this delicious smell. "My word" I said out loud in delight. The curry was setup in a traditional japanese style with rice on the left and curry on the right side of the plate. Now I have to say I have had my far share of Japanese Beef Curry but this curry, THIS CURRY was by far the best I have had. The beef was super soft it melted in my mouth. Tonight, wile I lie in bed thinking about curry it will be easy to sleep, and my first thought upon waking up will be the leftover curry I took home. Orient House is amazing, it's hard to imagine anything more delicious than their sushi and curry. Their sushi is perfect. It cannot be done any better. And the curry, what the hell is in that? I really wish I liked this place more ! The people are so sweet and catering . But , the food is awful . The Philadelphia roll tastes like old fish and is so mushy . The tofu soup has an odd aftertaste. The salad was wilted and made with a Thai type of dressing and not that yummy orange one you usually get . Just wasn't in the mood for the left-overs that were our best dinner option tonight which included Easter ham we have been enjoying since Thursday. Wanting to support a local business and something we think is very yummy, I called Orient House. The same guy who served us after the Christmas parade in December, was the guy who answered the phone, met us at the door, wiped down everything we exchanged back and forth, and wished us a good night. Delightful service in a dreary season for our country. There are four of us, including two adult children, so I ordered the dinner for four. My son asked what each of our favorite items was, and while we all agreed that one of the chicken dishes was all our favorite and the almond chicken was maybe a wee bit bland, overall, we loved every bit of it. Dinner for four has so many items! I think we'll have enough to eat for at least two more meals! Yum, yum, and more yum! Thank you Orient House. We're glad you're close to home! read more

I asked for water without ice, and then the waitress brings two glasses of water with ice. Ok... I rolled with it. I ordered the dinner bento box with 3 items for $16. That's not $. That's more like a dollar dollar sign $$. Anyhow, I ordered CA rolls, chicken and steak teriyaki. Came out. Typical bento box with salad, rolls, chicken, and steak. They had a good amount of wasabi and ginger, which I love. The salad wasn't what I normally was used to, because instead of using sesame dressing they used something else. Wasn't a fan of it. actually, it tasted like the ones you can buy over the store. The chicken was ok. the steak was ok. It wasn't $16 worth; that's for sure. I could have made them better myself, which I will do next time. Sushi places in Modesto or the valley area were not good - poor quality of fresh selections, nothing very out of the ordinary, not reasonable priced, and just bad food. I was a regular patron at their old location on Tully Road before the fire. I was very sad to see them close down. Now I am ecstatic to see them reopen at a new location. I hoped that the food would be the same and thankfully it was. My favorite dish here is the Bento box with Tempura and Teriyaki chicken. The food is very good. My only complaint is the pricing for the Bento box is a bit much. Still it doesn't stop me from ordering it almost every time. If you are dining on the cheap, the lunch menu is a bargain. The decor here is very nice and nothing like their previous location which was a dive. I like dives, but it sure is nice to dine with ambiance at their new restaurant. The service I have received here has always been excellent with the exception of the first week that they reopened. It was so busy they just couldn't keep up. I waited a while before I returned and the newness had worn off. My subsequent visits service was always excellent. The couple who owns the restaurant are very friendly and always happy to see me return. I feel like my patronage is much appreciated. With so many places losing sight of their customers, it is nice that Orient House still treats me like a King. read more

I have been coming to Orient House since I was in middle school and eating Japanese food my whole life. I can easily say this is my favorite place in town for comfort food. Their new location in Roseburg Square is stylish and quaint. Everything I have ordered here has been great. My favorites have to be the gyoza, Japanese curry, tempura and tonkatsu. As you can see from my picture, generous servings of everything. The sashimi is thick and fresh. Their menu is priced pretty average compared to similar restaurants in town. The 2 stars are for the service. They are very, very nice people which is one of the reasons why I hate to post this but, damn, it truly was the worst food we've ever had. They were slammed when I called the order in which we thought was a good sign. Then my husband picked up the food and brought it home and it was the wrong order so I took it back. Entering the restaurant they quickly called out my name and apologized profusely about giving my husband the wrong order. Like I said, genuinely lovely people, eager to please. The owner is charming and she has a wonderful smile. We wanted this place to be awesome since it is down the street and around the corner from our house. Also, we have yet to find decent Chinese food here. It didn't help that my husband and I grew up eating some of the best Chinese food outside of China in LA, SF, and Seattle. We ordered their Dinner for Two: egg roll or gyoza (gyoza was the best item of the meal but store bought Ling Ling are still better), sweet & sour pork or almond chicken (thick breaded, semi-flavorless, icky pink sweet & sour pork), chow mein (usually wouldn't complain about too many veggies but there really weren't many noodles AND it was greasy and rather blah in flavor) and fried rice (had a weird, unusual aftertaste). This is one of my family's preferred spots to eat. It has been a spot I've frequented regularly since I was in fifth grade with my mom , I'm in my forties now and the nourishment is similarly as acceptable. The proprietor , Allen is warm and inviting and ofter will jump out of the kitchen to extraordinary his faithful clients which I generally appreciate.
