My family and I stumbled on this place for lunch and it did not disappoint! Food and service were fantastic. My mom ordered the chicken gyoza soup, sister ordered the C3 combo, and I ordered the C2 combo (chicken was so crispy and full of flavor). Serving sizes were excellent such that we needed some to-go boxes. Would be going here once a week if I lived closer!

It's been said again and again. This is a hole in the wall. Nothing fancy. Perhaps a tad messy. Definitely somewhat cluttered (stored empty cardboard boxes for larger to-go orders). There was one table outside that was occupied when we walked in. Maybe seven or eight tables inside. I think two were occupied when we walked in. The ordering scheme is simple. Go to the counter, read the menu, place your order, pay and then grab a table. To simplify things, one side of the menu features Chinese dishes while the other side features Japanese. The order taker/cashier/server was very friendly and probably the owner as well. We were on our way to a show, not starving but wanting something quick and warm to eat. We settled on a single order of Chicken Curry with Potato, Carrot and Onion over Steamed Rice. We asked for a cup of Ice Water to drink, and he insisted that he give us two cups of Ice Water. As we were getting ready to sit down, he rushed over and asked us to wait a moment while he wiped the table down for us. When our order was ready, he brought it to us in a styrofoam container along with two food trays, two set-ups and a soup spoon to use as a serving spoon. He also refilled our waters and brought us fortune cookies. For a simple Curry over Rice, this order was surprisingly good. The Potatoes and Carrots were cooked well, firm without being mushy. The Curry had a nice bite to it. Even the rice was of excellent quality. And that's one area where many restaurants make the mistake of trying to save cost by use inferior rice. Not here, it was delicious and the price of $12.79 including sales tax is ridiculously inexpensive. We have one more show at the Gallo Center for the Arts this season and I think we know where we're going to have a virtual feast!

We are in town one night early for an event. We took a walk from the hotel and found this amazing place. They have my favorite role of the lion King. We tried the barbecue pork Ramen noodle soup. Family business great service say hello to Jorge.

So I haven't been to this restaurant in a long time. I will soon realize why I haven't been back. This was once a hopping place. Today, there were not many customers inside and it was lunch time. I ordered my meal. I ordered a combo with fried rice, chow mein, fried prawns and chicken in foil. The chicken in foil and prawns were ok. The fried rice and chow mien were definitely not good at all. The rice was old. The chow mien was mainly cabbage and not much noodles. The wife didn't care for her meal either. Definitely not the same place as it was years back.

During a training in downtown Modesto I located Tokyo Express as a good spot for lunch. The first thing to note is people aren't wrong; this is a hole in the wall. There are tables inside but it was pretty packed during lunch, so plan accordingly. I ordered the Hot & Spicy Ramen and I left very happy. The broth had just the right amount of spices and the noodles were delicate and delicious. The egg was perfectly soft-boiled. The only item in the ramen I didn't care for was the broccoli, but that is because I think broccoli is a gift from Satan, so personal preference on that one. I knocked one star for the choice of serving receptacles. Most all of the take-out carriers and drink cups were Styrofoam. Recent legislation in CA banned Styrofoam so I was surprised to see it in use in the restaurant. Hopefully when their batch of Styrofoam products is up they will re-order a more sustainable item for their use.

My friend had really high hopes for this restaurant, and I had a bad feeling about everything. This place had no customers during lunch time which only added to the eerie, quiet, and uncomfortable atmosphere. The service was kind but felt very desperate and forced. When I went to pay for my meal, the man who was supposed to ring me up told me to come behind the counter to pay. This made me very uncomfortable. If my friend hadn't already paid for her meal and sat down, I would've left without a word. The restaurant was dirty. Nothing looked organized with stock overflowing from boxes left at the front of house. The dead bugs on the windowsill had been there so long they collected a few good layers of dust. After receiving our food, I noticed that everything was served in either a styrofoam, paper, or plastic container. Hot miso soup in styrofoam, my friend's sushi rolls on a plastic tray, and my meal conveniently already in a to-go box. No one is on dish-duty at this restaurant because there are NO dishes. As for the food, I can safely say that this was the worst meal I have ever had. I ordered the beef teriyaki that came with a side of rice, salad, and miso. The beef had no taste with a rubbery texture. It was drowned in this "teriyaki sauce" that tasted like they concocted it themselves. I've also never known Asian salads to be spicy, so the weird glaze that was drizzled over my lettuce caught me off guard. The shredded onions in the miso soup looked like it was an attempt to make the soup taste fresher, and it didn't work. What is seen in the photo I attached is what was left of the mystery meat I pulled from the back of my throat. Not only would I not recommend this place to anyone, I made this Yelp account to WARN everyone about it.

Tokyo Express has always been on of my favorite spots. George is always so attentive and kind and the food is always good. I love this place so much my husband and I had an impromptu wedding shoot before my reception. I ordered the only thing I really had time to eat on my wedding day and my roll was delicious.

We got the Crab Puffs, 49er Roll, a few Ichi Ban Maki Rolls, a few Crunchy Munchy Rolls, a Lion King Roll, a Philadelphia Roll, Miso Soup, and some more but you get the point. The food was ready quite promptly for pickup despite the extremely large order and it being a packed Saturday afternoon. Everything was perfect. The food that was hot stayed hot, the chilled dishes stayed cold. Every single thing tasted great. I was especially impressed with the Crab Puffs. They were completely stuffed with the filling (which I definitely can't say the same about from other restaurants)! They provided a ton of chop sticks and soy sauce packets which is much appreciated. We couldn't decide which one was our favorite so we scarfed them all down as fast as we could to indulge in the amazing flavors! I would say I leaned most towards the Crunchy Munchy roll! This place really "rolled" its place into our hearts!

Torii's - Where the Room Finds Its Rhythm (and You Find Yours)…read more There is something about Torii's that does not announce itself--it reveals itself. I came in like I usually do... no expectations, just present. And that is when this place tends to meet you halfway. Karaoke here is run by the Tipsy Chiks--Angie with Scotty 2 Hotty--and what they have built isn't just a rotation, it is a flow. You can feel it when the room settles in. No rush, no pressure... just a steady current that lets people be exactly where they are. Scotty 2 Hotty keeps things smooth behind the board. Sound is consistent, fair, and dialed in enough where you can trust the mic. That matters more than people think. It gives you the space to either step forward--or just ease into your song without forcing anything. And Angie brings that balance on the front end--welcoming without hovering. It is a subtle thing, but it sets the tone. You do not feel watched... you feel included. The crowd? A mix. Some regulars, some first-timers, some people just figuring it out. And that is the beauty of it--there is no single "type" here. You can go big, or you can go inward. Both land. I have had nights here where I just sang for myself... and somehow the room came with me anyway. Not loud. Not over the top. Just present. That is a rare thing. Bartenders Alexis and Sherry keep it grounded behind the bar--quick, aware, and real. No fuss, just good energy. Torii's doesn't try to be the loudest room in town. It is something better. It is a place where, if you let it, you will hear yourself a little clearer. I will keep coming back.

Sushi restaurant or a nightclub?…read more My friend and I decided to go for a night out Downtown. When we arrived at about 7:00pm, we were told there would be about an hour wait. Despite this long wait, there were actually quite a few empty tables, but was overall still very busy. When you put yourself on the waitlist, they notify you through text when your table is ready. This gave us ample time to walk around Downtown while we waited. When we received the table-ready text (just short of an hour later), we were sat quickly in a nice U-shaped booth. This seating arrangement felt a bit awkward for a party of two, especially if you are sharing food. The booth is too big to be sitting close enough to reach but too small to not feel awkward. It is perfect for people watching though since the booths face the entire restaurant. By this time, the restaurant was completely packed, with just about every booth, table, and barstool occupied. Our waiter came quickly to take our drink orders. We got a Cucumber Martini and an Espresso Martini. The Cucumber Martini was incredibly light and refreshing. The Espresso Martini was not impressive. It didn't have a strong espresso flavor and was rather watery, but still alright. This is the type of restaurant, that especially on busy nights like this where they don't accept reservations, you should allocate a lot of time for the dinner service for. There is a significant time gap between each time the waiter comes around to take your order. There was probably 15-20 minutes between placing our drink, appetizer, and meal orders. This was not a problem for us, but if you are eating here before making a show at the Gallo Center, this may be something to consider. For our appetizer, we ordered the Salmon Ceviche. It was insanely good. It was subtly spicy and citrusy. The chips that came with it were light and not oily at all. I wish the portion was larger because the two of us swallowed it up in just a few bites. For our entree, we got the Salmon Tataki and Goodi Rolls to split. They were both very good and came out on a lovely platter. They tasted very fresh and high quality. The prices here are on the higher side but is nice for a special occasion or splurge. Our server was very attentive and checked on us often. He was super friendly too. The restaurant was super lively. They were playing club music which was totally a vibe. It looked like this was the spot people hit before going out for the night. I noticed they were accommodating for both small and large parties, serving both rather quickly. I'll be back!

It not only is a fun concept, you can get quite creative with how you build your hot pot and choose just the things to your liking. I was amazed that they had very authentic Chinese ingredients to choose from - wood ear, enoki mushrooms, bok choy, different kinds of noodles, fish balls, Napa cabbage, octopus, and lots of different varieties of selfish, plus much much more!
