    Salmon katsu bento box
    Ilse H.

Welp. This place felt below average. I do want to point out that the service here was great. Service was attentive and friendly, and definitely busy. So I admire the service work ethic. For that reason, I'm not lowering my review. Now the food... I order a shrimp appetizer and it felt bland. The sauce was way too sweet. For almost $9, it certainly felt like a rip off. Then I got a salmon katsu bento box and half of the items weren't good. The Salmon tasted bland and the katsu sauce tasted nasty. Surprisingly the rice was good. I found it warm, and fluffy. The California rolls were the worst rolls I've ever had. The crab had a weird taste with the sauce they had used. I think Safeway rolls tasted better imo. The salad was good. I enjoyed the sesame sauce that was used. Not sure if it's authentic Japanese but it was tasty. My bf roll was incorrect. His was suppose to be deep fried but it was not. He had also said his rice tasted as if they used tap water. Other than that, for the bill being $50, I would say it's not worth your coins. With that money, I much rather spend it elsewhere on knowing the quality of the food is tasty. They do have good days during the week (excludes Friday- Sunday) though with rolls being half off.

Thinking about sushi and a good deal stop in. The service was very on point. We never worried about an empty glass or what to order. Our server was very attentive. We watched the game, drank sushi bombs and gobbled down a few rolls with fried tempura. Oh the miso soup was pretty tasty too. My dinner partner said they have really good deals on rolls on certain days. I think he said Monday through Thursday but im not positive. We went on Sunday and I didn't pay so I'm not sure how much dinner cost. Definitely going again and wanting to try other options.

I know people go crazy over this sushi. It was just ehh for me. I think the lobster roll across the street is way better. our server was fine. She just didn't know the menu very well. The side salad is not a traditional Japanese sesame sauce , rather, it's sweet. I do not care for that... but if you do, you will love it. I'm also the girl that doesn't care for sweet relish or miracle whip either. If you do... that's your prerogative, but it's not for me. It was sooo cold in there too. I like to be warm and toasty while eating so I can take my coat off. It was raining outside and they had door open. We did ask them to shut door as they sat us near it. I guess I would give it another try... maybe I ordered wrong?

Wasabi and ginger given for 3 sushi rolls ordered! Wow, talk about being cheap with the condiments

It's literally been years since I've eaten at this restaurant since there are so many Japanese restaurants now in Modesto versus way back when I moved here in 2003. Decided to try this place on a Sunday at 440 pm since my Go to Japanese place - Sushi Garden wasn't open yet and I was already hungry and wanted to try this place again. First time I tried Umi Sushi was when they first opened years ago and the waitresses were likely the owners. Never did get hooked enough to make this my regular place for sushi. First thing we saw on a Sunday was at the door, they had the "Mask required" sign and so I had to get me and my wife a mask from the car before entering. Once we did, I noticed that cold, unwelcoming feel and realized when me and my wife sat down, that the sushi chefs who were working the sushi bar, didn't give a customary greeting of "Irrasshaimase" which means "welcome, please come in" that's often said in MANY Japanese restaurants but not this one. (One star) Menu was filled with pages of sushi with pics which can be overwhelming to say the least. I decided on Super California roll, a Tempura roll and my wife got the Caterpillar roll. Reason she got this was from the menu photo which showed it looking like a caterpillar with eyes. When we got the 3 rolls, my wife noticed hers didn't look like the photo and brought it up to the waitress. She agreed that it would have been nice if it was made like that but I guess the sushi chef was lazy. To be honest, the rolls weren't that great and looked all very similar.... For whatever reason, they were all drizzled with soy sauce. Please look at the photos. The sushi rice was a bit too firm almost like it's been sitting for a few hours and wasn't fresh. The sushi itself wasn't anything to brag. I'd give it 2 stars for all 3. Even the ginger given initially with our plates was limited for having ordered 3 plates of sushi. I had to request more just because I do like my sushi with a lot of ginger. Overall, I wasn't impressed at all with their rolls and not sure if there was a change of ownership since my last visit years ago. I guess there was a reason why I never did go to Umi sushi all these years despite it being one of the places my employee would go for lunch some time. I honestly doubt I would ever go here again unless all the other Japanese restaurants closed shop and this was the last one standing in Modesto. Maybe if the sushi chefs would have just said "Irrasshaimase" when we entered as a patron that I would have given them a chance with their rolls but this place failed in so many ways. Even the tempura ice cream was less to be desired. Two stars

Service and food is great but the music they used to play made the place 10x better, now it's kind of boring.

Average food and poor service…read more My friends and I decided to try Okinawa Sushi on a Saturday evening, around 6pm. Despite the restaurant being relatively empty, it took quite a long time for us to be sat. When we got to our table, the first thing I noticed was how large the booths were. If you are coming with a large party, you will likely be able to fit at one booth - this definitely makes this place feel more intimate. Despite the menu being very large, I must say, I appreciate that the there are photos of all the sushi rolls. The photos are definitely not the clearest but they help visualize what you are ordering. The menu definitely has a lot going on. There is sushi, hibachi, and all the side orders and bowls that you can imagine. Our table ordered the Crab Rangoons, Fantastic, Alaska, and Lion King Rolls. The rangoons were unfortunately deceiving. They are large, but have hardly any filling. They were almost entirely fried wrapper with quite literally a drop of filling. As for the rolls, they were alright. The texture of rolls was almost mushy. On some of rolls, there was so sauce that it was all you could taste and made the rolls soggy. The flavors were pretty good, but the portions were tiny. I felt the rolls were comparable to glorified grocery store sushi. When the rolls were brought to our table, my friends and I had to hold back our laughs when we saw the tray. There was a little whale figurine that spewed out steam. This novelty was cute but felt a little tacky. The service was somehow worse than the food. Our table ordered three waters for our party of three yet only two came. Our server said she would bring it to us later. Little did we know, this "later" would be at the conclusion of our meal. The one time she came by our table, she asked us if everything was okay. Before we were even able to provide an answer, she just assumed we would say 'yes' and walked away, making no eye contact with us. She literally walked away so quickly we couldn't tell her we were still missing a water. It felt like she was just avoiding any interaction with us. At the end of our meal, it took a long time for the bill to be brought to us. I don't see myself coming back in the future.

Osaka literally never misses…read more My friends and I ordered literally SO much food from Osaka for pickup and every single item was delicious. We got the Crab Puffs, 49er Roll, a few Ichi Ban Maki Rolls, a few Crunchy Munchy Rolls, a Lion King Roll, a Philadelphia Roll, Miso Soup, and some more but you get the point. The food was ready quite promptly for pickup despite the extremely large order and it being a packed Saturday afternoon. Everything was perfect. The food that was hot stayed hot, the chilled dishes stayed cold. Every single thing tasted great. I was especially impressed with the Crab Puffs. They were completely stuffed with the filling (which I definitely can't say the same about from other restaurants)! They provided a ton of chop sticks and soy sauce packets which is much appreciated. This is my favorite casual sushi place in the valley!

Jumped in hungry and rolled out happy!…read more This spot is definitely a returner on my list. We were greeted within seconds of walking in and seated right away. The restaurant was busy but the staff were still engaging with everyone. We sat down in a corner booth and were immediately welcomed with requests for drink orders. The place was well lit and decorated with a warm and welcoming feel! We ordered four rolls and chicken katsu. Each roll was better than the next! We couldn't decide which one was our favorite so we scarfed them all down as fast as we could to indulge in the amazing flavors! I would say I leaned most towards the Crunchy Munchy roll! This place really "rolled" its place into our hearts!
