I haven't been to sushi gardens since my days in college. The last time I went was to their location in Turlock. With that said, it was good. I came on a Friday evening. The place was packed. Interesting, when I arrived, the girl at the front told me "it's going to be a 20 minute wait" but there was a table, clean and no one sitting on it, so I told her "there's a table right there." slightly weird interaction but it's fine. My server was amazing. Super attentive and did an amazing job refilling my water. I got the dinner plate of the grilled salmon and tempura veggies. All tasted good, and for the price, I would say it's priced right. One odd thing was I given a to-go cup for my drink when everyone had glass drinks. Maybe they had ran out of glass drinks? Been months since I came back to Sushi Garden but decided to give them a try since I was treating my cousin to lunch who was visiting me, and this place was close to my office. Came here on a Wednesday at 1 pm and there were tables available. It was 3 of us (wife joined for lunch), we all ordered the chicken teriyaki lunch plate. I have to tell you that it took way longer to get our meals than expected especially when it was not that busy. I only had an hour lunch (1-2pm) and it was close to 1:35 pm when we all got our order. I didn't look at when we placed our order but it was around 1 pm since we got there at 12:50 pm When I ate the chicken teriyaki it was literally cold. Not hot.. not even warm. It was likely sitting in the kitchen for minutes while waiting for some other item to be cooked (my guess was the tempura). I asked my wife and my cousin if their chicken was cold also and they confirmed it so. Also since I've being nitpicky, the 4 California roll that came with our lunch plate had avocado turning brown and very little of the crab meat on there. Pretty sad that the new owners have made the place go downhill since they took over. I shared this to my staff who were "loyal" sushi garden patrons when it was owned by the original owners, and they agree that it's not the same as before and have noticed the quality has declined. Not trying to hate but man, to wait for our lunch plates and having the main entree cold from sitting in the kitchen is a major turn off. So I was initially sad to see that they no longer had salmon katsu on the menu since they came under new ownership but I asked our server if it was still possible to order and she said yes so I was elated! A little bummed they no longer make the tartar sauce for it but everything was just a delicious as I remember and the service is always top notch here. Change in ownership has definitely affected this place. Staff needs to be improved. Some staff in particular is so slow and so inattentive to their tables. One girl is literally running around handling an 8 top along with 2 other parties, and answering the phone, and the other girl was just taking her sweet time. I understand when it's not busy it's okay to be a little relaxed but put some pep in your step! Fried oysters no longer come with tartar sauce instead comes with something like Tonkatsu sauce and the Tako kimchee is salty. I don't know.. Just moved to modesto and was looking for a new sushi place when we found Sushi Garden. All I can say is: lovely! I ordered Sesame Chicken and my partner ordered two rolls: Garden Roll and Rainbow roll! The sesame chicken was wonderful! Large portions! My partner REALLY enjoyed the Garden Roll! This place has gone down hill since the new owners took over. Walked in the door this evening and the first thing we hear is a couple complaining that they've been there for 10 minutes and nobody has said anything to them. There were only about 4-5 tables with people so it was not busy. There were numerous tables with dirty dishes on them which is unusual for this place. Sat there for a few minutes, then we over heard another table complaining that they didn't get all of their food. Not good. Sat down for 5 minutes and nobody came over to take the dishes away on the table we sat at, nobody said they would be right over, nothing. I guess we can't go here any more. Sushi is not cheap and I'd rather give my money to a better restaurant. I'm really bummed because this was one of our favorite places to go for sushi. Anyways, after 5 minutes, we got up and left. Ordering over the phone to go, I asked for their chicken katsu curry entree, they asked to confirm if I wanted the lunch special or the dinner entree and I confirmed the dinner entree. Upon picking it up and leaving back to work, I found it was the lunch special with a half empty container of curry and a single cut of diced meat on rice. Calling back to confirm it was t the lunch special they handed me, they the. Said there was no lunch special, only the entree. This ignores the fact I have a copy of their menu from a week ago for the order with the special being number nine and the entree in the back of the menu. My personal opinion on this one being the person that loves to eat Japanese sushi's and sashimi is that the ingredients are top notch. The only thing I wish they can improve on is making the rice a bit moist , stickier and not dry so gives the customers a more pleasurable experience and it's easier to put down several sushi's for sure. The ORIGINAL owner of Sushi Garden created the "Modesto Roll" that had soft shell crab inside and the flavor was DEVINE!! The Original price was approx. $18, then the price went up to approx. $20.. Now that the NEW owner has taken possession the price of my "Modesto Roll" the price is NOW $26.00!!!!! WOW!!! When I got the bill and saw the price and after I caught my breath, I asked the waitress why the price difference and I was told that it is due to the "ECONOMY"....It has NOTHING to do with the economy, it's about PRICE GOUGING!!! We REALLY had to work at getting our server to speak and feel he cared about being there. he was wearing so many different logos on his black hat, black zip up and t-shirt that we honestly did not know he worked for Sushi Garden when he walked up casually and just said "hi". he got the memo about wearing black though. Zero personality. Took forever to be acknowledged after sitting down. We actually asked how long he worked there and we were stunned when he said about 4 years. don't get me wrong.. he wasn't rude. Super disappointed with the new management. We've gone here for years and never experienced horrible customer service until now. Asked for white meat on two dishes and then when we got home to check our food, it was all dark meat. When I called and talked to the person who took our order he gave me attitude, said a manager would call, and hung up on me. Was told the manager was not there, until I called back and all of a sudden he was. The manager stated he would refund our meals and it should be posted by tomorrow. He called back about 30 minutes later and said that I would need to come to their restaurant if I wanted to get a refund. Like I mentioned before, we've gone here for years and until new management took over, had never experienced anything like this. I'm horrified! Over 8 years of sushi garden as my favorite sushi in Modesto, and yet I'm ripping that title from them after last night. I knew something was off when my favorite two waitresses weren't working. I have since been informed sushi garden is under new ownership. I really hope that the new ownership is reading this, as this is my formal plea to return things as they were. There was a reason that sushi garden stuck out to me for 8 years, I have to drive by several sushi establishments to get sushi garden and I choose to go there Everytime. My roll last night was sad, I always take photos of my rolls and realized I don't have a photo of my one from last night because of how sad looking it was. I got my favorite lion king roll, and I don't know what salmon you're putting on top now but let's change it back, I was still hungry when I left, and no more sauce on top? The salmon was so tiny and honestly not even appealing to eat, mostly just burnt skin when I used to get a nice bite of perfectly cooked salmon. Just weird and CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP changes. Save a few cents on sauce ? WEIRD! Clearly the previous owners had it right for years, the new ownership should respect the legacy they created instead of destroying this favorite establishment in less than 6 months since taking over. And finally. The service. My god. I walked in a girl let me know she would be right with me. Waited multiple minutes to sit down as some machine is beeping so loud, only to be told after several minutes of standing there that I actually could just sit wherever. Then while waiting for our food, we were noticing that it was taking a very long time, checked my phone and we had been there for over an hour with no food yet (there were only three of us) a casual three person dinner should not take an hour and half, especially when we used to come here on our lunch break in under 45 minutes! To the new ownership: get a grip. You knew the legacy you were taking over when you bought sushi garden, this is a disgrace to the original ownership and your cheap cost cutting tactics are disgraceful. First stop since arriving in Modesto and I will be returning! I went on a Wed evening around 530 pm and was immediately welcomed where I sat at the bar. They weren't very busy yet but had some people at the bar and tables. The young waitress who mainly helped me, Jae, I believe was her name was really helpful on suggestions since I was looking for a Chirashi type dish. The Chirashi they have seemed like it would be too much fish for me as comes with 18 pieces so I settled with a Sashimi Salad, Agedashi Tofu and side of rice. Also, had a large hot sake that Jae warmed up more because I like it piping hot! The chef agreed to give me a mix of tuna and salmon, instead of just salmon and remembered to put the dressing on the side (believe it or not half the time people mess that up). I really liked the salad and would def order that again. However, I was not impressed with the Agedashi Tofu. I've never had it where it comes sitting in sauce so was disappointed to see it come out half soaked in a thin sauce. One of my favorite things about that dish is the crisp outer part, which ended up being soggy from the sauce. The sauce also was a bit watered down for my taste, although it did have a decent flavor so I don't believe I would order it again even with the sauce on the side. Overall this is a nice casual and clean spot where they provide excellent service and the food was fresh. I'm sure I'll be back to check out some of their other items on the menu. read more
