We were on the way back home from Yosemite and needed a break from driving and honestly needed our Vietnamese food fix after eating American food almost the whole week. I had heard about Viet Noodles Xpress and decided to give it a try. The pho hit the spot. The quality of the beef is not as great as what I get in San Jose but it was still good, the broth had great flavor and the noodles were cooked perfectly. It was super comforting and much needed after being in the mountains for a few days. My wife ordered the bun bo hue and it tasted great. Lots of protein options and really good depth of flavor in the broth. I enjoyed it almost as much as the Pho. The staff was awesome. It looks like a family owned place and everyone worked together smoothly and was really welcoming. They were friendly, gave suggestions, and were quick with everything we needed. We were in Modesto as we had to take our dog to the vet, and it has been a hot minute (almost 2 years) since we have eaten at Viet Noodles Express. Back in the day it was my favorite Vietnamese place whenever I went to Modesto, and I was curious to see how the food/quality was this time around. I was quite happy that everything was as I remembered! My husband went with the special combination vermicelli bowl, while I decided to try the BBH. I have still been on a BBH streak and from what I saw in terms of other Yelpers' photos, it looked pretty good. I also ordered a Thai tea since I haven't had one in a bit. The Thai tea was the perfect strength yet still creamy. VNX is not a big restaurant, but I like the open seating and it is a nice quiet place to enjoy a meal. The service is attentive and our waters were filled regularly. My husband's vermicelli bowl arrived first, and my BBH arrived shortly after. I asked for shrimp paste on the side, which was given to me quickly. Before adding the shrimp paste, I tried the broth, and it was delicious. For the price point of $14 I did not expect (or receive) a pork hock. This was fine. The amount of meat and cha that I received was ample enough, and there were plenty of noodles as well. The texture of the noodles was good, and so slurpable. The bean sprouts and cabbage were fresh. After adding my shrimp paste, the broth was even more elevated. It was a satisfying bowl of BBH, especially when a good bowl of BBH in the valley is few and far between (and not everyone can make the drive up to Sacramento.) My husband also enjoyed his vermicelli bowl and stated that the various meats were well-charred and flavorful. The egg roll was also very crispy and crunchy, just how he liked it. I really liked that even though everything else has gone up in price, the food at VNX has stayed consistently affordable. Even the banh mi were quite cheap (I did not end up ordering any, but I definitely thought about it). I'm happy that I was able to stop at VNX during our visit to Modesto, and would highly recommend trying their dishes out if you are in the mood for Vietnamese food! Once upon a time, I lived in Oregon and I worked next door to one of The Most Amazing Vietnamese sandwich joints I've ever encountered. Not a single working day went by that I didn't stop in for some sort of treat--iced coffee and spring rolls and dozens upon dozens of Bánh mì. Their classic offering was absolutely phenomenal. Just absolute an absolute rockstar of the classic Vietnamese sandwich. I'd almost given up on finding a dank one here in the valley; even though I apparently live around the corner from the best one in California. Thank goodness I found myself at VNX late this morning! I grabbed two of the BM1's and cannot gush about that sandwich enough. The pâté alone is so dang flavorful that it's only been a few hours and I'm already ready for my next visit. I would have rated this establishment 5 stars but their pork egg rolls are a fail. I have ordered them in the past and they were delicious. But yesterday I ordered two orders and they had close to no pork. They tasted plain so I opened one up to see what was in it and it was mostly cabbage and shredded carrots. One had a thin hair like piece of pork. Very disappointing, so they became a snack for my chickens because the cats didn't want them either. Will definitely not be ordering that appetizer again from this establishment. Other than that their house chow mein is tasty when they include the shrimp which was also missing from my order. Not sure why they skimping the items so hard. I paid over 60 bucks for dinner that was lacking proteins. So that brings their rating to 3 stars. read more

Third time coming here today (1/24/26) and the first two times were great experiences. We love the food, service is adequate and menu prices are reasonable. However, my concern is for their charging methods. Our total with tax was $30 (on POS screen before paying), for 2 bowls of pho, 2 waters and an order of spring rolls. After we swiped our card, we checked the receipt after expecting to see the $30 total, BUT the receipt said grand total of $39! Where did the $9 charge come from??? We always do cash tip so we know it wasn't a voluntary card tip. Our receipt says TWO "tip" charges .. one is 10% and another "tip" 18%! I came here for a quick lunch pick up order. They fast and efficient! I ordered the shrimp spring rolls and I was amazed to see how big they were! There are 2 in the order but the 2 are equivalent to 4! I would have preferred a sweet chili sauce over the peanut sauce but that's just my preference. I also added on a coffee while I was doing the pick up and that was also amazing! The restaurant has a small lobby/waiting area but the restaurant appeared to be a good size. Probably the best pho spot in the area. I had not been back here in a minute because I started frequenting another new popular spot on occasion. Whilst this "New" spot was good I noticed it was QUITE expensive and for the portion of noodles and meat etc they literally SKIMPED out. On a random cold morning I looked at which one was opened and Viet Noodle Xpress was the only one closest that was opened so I decided on here. I sure am glad I did! 4.5 stars Duck noodle soup with egg noodles hit the spot. Large bowl is the only option, pretty big. Initially thought there were only a few pieces of duck but most of it was hidden under the noodles. They could get people to post better pics if it was all on top of the noodles. The soup flavor was as you'd expect for this type of dish. Satisfying Banh mi was also up there. These guys got it down!!! Pho combo is straight !! The flavor is smackin!! And always great portions! If you're a Pho fanatic like me you have to give these folks a try. I've also had the crispy pork plate and the BBQ porkchop plate. Every thing I've ordered has been phenomenal. We watched Uncle Roger on YouTube hating Rachel Ray's horrible version of Pho noodle soup. In his words, it was "pho-king" bad. It made me crave Pho done right, so I Doordashed Viet Noodles Express. They forgot to give us any Thai basil with our Pho orders! The broth was savory, and the noodles were great. But I need basil. I have 90% of it left over. The Braised Pork Belly & Egg Rice plate outshined the Pho. The pork belly was tender and tasty, the boiled egg was perfect, and the broth was sublime. Just the broth with rice alone made a delicious soup at the end. The pickled daikon and carrots were the perfect complement to all of the fatty pork. My son didn't care for his Grilled Chicken Bahn Mi. He said the chicken was dry, and there were too many onions. My husband's only complaint was that they needed to include more Hoisin sauce. Just noticed this restaurant after dining at My Garden, a few doors away. Decided to try a Bahn Mi and was pleasantly surprised. In the past we had to go to Sac to Duc Huong sandwiches which in my opinion are the best Bahn MI's around. I've been looking for good Asian restaurants to eat delicious food here in Modesto, and I have finally found one that sells a great bowl of pho! I had seen this place pop up on Yelp a few times and finally decided to try it out. I went right before the lunch rush, so it wasn't too packed and was very clean. The staff were very kind and answered any questions I may have. I tried their P6 Pho with Thai milk tea to drink. Both tasted delicious! It reminds me of places I have eaten at out in San Jose, which is home to bomb Vietnamese food. I also wanted to try one of their desserts before leaving, so I ordered their honeycomb cake. I've never had this before, but from what I ate, it doesn't have much flavor I would love to know from experts on how this should taste). But the texture was nice and chewy. Stopped by this noodle shop on 8/22/21 around 11 am for breakfast after getting a craving of soup. We stopped in and the first thing we noticed was it wasn't too busy. Good size restaurant. There were many tables that had plates that needed to be cleared from previous customers so it made it look a bit unorganized. The waitress was super welcoming and gave us menus right away. Took our drink order and came back when we were ready. We ordered a regular P9 & Large P3. My husband had the large and he said he really like the size and portion of meat that was placed into bowl. My soap was too big for me and I had to take it to go. But our soups were super tasty and hot. The meat was so well portioned and the prices for the soups were great. We ordered wings and pork egg rolls and they were delicious. Everything came out piping hot and fresh. We will definitely come back and have soup again.
