Went here 12 years hated it. My nephew requested it again for his bday, that is the only reason we came back. I can confidently say even if he wants to go again- we won't. Walking in, could use some major updates. Nobody asked if we wanted a drink or check over the menu while we waited to be seated in our party room (waited in bar area an hr). They finally started cooking two hours after arrival. Then waitress was AWFUL! Literally I just cannot say anything nice so I won't. The hibachi chef was nice, he did a great job, no complaints there, tipped well. We were here for 4 hours (only 45 min of that eating). I don't even know where to begin. Well we went to this establishment with such high hopes and had them crushed by Torii itself. Before I begin I do want to say the food was decent. Miso soup was a bit bland, but I had the chicken & shrimp teppanyaki. It was flavorful and seemed fresh. First of all our teppanyaki-shokunin was not traditionally trained or very personable. He was Hispanic as are we, but i was highly offended when he began using Chicano slang, saying "Shaaaaaa!" Like a gangster. Total turn off and rather insulting. In fact his whole demeanor was a red flag tun off. His cooking was weak, as was his attempt at entertaining. The restaurant it self lacked style or warmth. Over all this pla e sucked. Don't come here expecting Bennihana because you will end up with Top Ramen. read more

It's possibly the only hibachi restaurant within 15-20 miles. I'm from the Bay Area so my review leans heavily on comparison to hibachi in the Bay. There's a cook who is a GREAT time! Heavy set, handsome, Latin guy. I didn't get his name bc he was not our cook. Our cook, although very courteous, was ready to go home. The food unfortunately did not meet our standard. I was starving and could have eaten anything.. unfortunately the food quality and flavor was that bad. Filet mignon was dry and tough... I don't know a whole lot about red meat but I know filet mignon is tender and tasty. Shrimp was dry as well. Fried rice had no veggies and was dry and flavorless. We made reservations that morning and still waited one hour seated at our table for our cook. The host was great! Bathrooms clean. Clearly there is something Modestians appreciate here bc it was busy. We met a great family however and they have karaoke Saturdays. read more

Dinner at Torii's, Modesto last night: (3/20/2026) Great family fun. Laughter. Food tasted good. But: There's an 18% gratuity automatically added for dining at the hibachi. If you don't eat at the hibachi stations, you can only eat in the bar area. Grease from the vent hood dripped onto the hibachi surface as it was heating. Mentioned it to the server. Solution: chef wiped the grease off the cook surface with a towel and just started cooking. Seriously: their hibachi hoods are coated with thick layers of grease. The chef referred to the chicken meals as 'salmonella' as a funny reference. I'm on the fence about going back. The last time I was there was just before their remodel, and again I was on the fence about going back. The remodel added paint and more open environment, but hasn't changed anything else. read more

The bacon wrapped shrimp was really good and the food in general was alright. Our hibachi chef was alright. He made it entertaining, but it was too loud for our kiddos. My biggest complaint is the hostess. As soon as we were seated we were pressured to order. Two adults and two kids at a new experience need a little time to get settled and figure out meals. Yet, she came back so often, I wanted to just pick something to get started so she'd give us a break. While our hibachi meal was being cooked, she stood near the back watching. I thought it a little odd, that we were seated in the back private area, but a little after we received our hibachi meals, a large party came in and was seated at our table. It was evident to me that we were being rushed to make room for them, and it was very awkward to finish our meal. We ended up packing up to go just get out of there and give the other party space. If you're looking for a special experience, I'd suggest going somewhere else (or coming with a big party, I guess). Tl;dr: $165 to be rushed out. 18% gratuity for hibachi table meals. Food alright. This place is OK. I almost feel it was a little better when it was just Divy vs being perpetually under construction. The food is ok not the best but the chef is typically well mannered and entertaining. There are a lot better Tempanyaki places in Manteca and Fresno but my wife and I had our first date here. Here is the ugly. I don't think the quality of food and flavor is worth the extravagant price. The bill was over $200 after tip for 4 sodas and 4 dinner plates. If we are paying that kind of price we should have a fully put together experience. I get it we all need to be working even under construction however, it's been under construction for at least 2 years at this point. You should consider changing the name of the restaurant to CA Highway 99. Anyway this probably would have been a one or two star experience if the chef wasn't so good. read more

The food has gone completely downhill from the original place. They have remodeled. And everyone can see what you're eating and celebrating. There's no privacy for your own party. The food was super salty. The old owned used to make their own ginger sauce and teriyaki sauce. Now you can tell it comes in a tub. They have cut corners in so many places. The bathroom was disgusting. The walls that were once dark red to help hide the grease from the cooking is now white and you can see the yellow grease stains. Fun, fun, fun and great food too! What an experience and our cook and waitress were hecka funny too! They are great and made the experience so much more memorable! The hibachi was sooooo much fun and really yummie and fresh! It was a lot of food too! The hibachi comes with soup, salad, fried or steamed rice, veggies, shrimp and your choice of meat(s). I met some friends here for karaoke on a Friday night. Right away I noticed how sticky the floors were, like, REALLY sticky, even in the women's bathroom, which tells me that they don't change the mop water throughout the day. The last time I was here for karaoke, I ordered a couple appetizers and a spicy tuna roll to share with my companions, and everything was ok-except for the spicy tuna roll, it was warm, and it's not supposed to be warm. I was afraid to eat the rest of it for fear I might get food poisoning. The appetizers were good though. Anyway, back to last night and the "sticky floor saga", my friends and I all ordered a couple appetizers each so that we could share with each other. I got the jalapeno poppers with crab and cream cheese-very good but be ready for some heat! I also got the spicy calamari, which was indeed spicy-and rubbery as well as super greasy. My friends got chicken wings, tempura combo, gyozas (pan fried) and a couple other things that I didn't try. Everything was just ok. The bartender was also our waitress, and she was very nice, but because she was unable to leave the bar, if we needed anything, we had to go to her. There was someone else waiting tables in the karaoke area, but apparently she has a beef with one of my friends and she wouldn't even make eye contact with us, not for lack of trying on our part, that's for sure! The KJ's were nice and competent, which was good. I might come back for karaoke, but I will be more careful about ordering food. read more

It was a decent environment, we sat at the regular tables since it was a wait for where they cook in front of you so I recommend a reservation for that. The Spicy calamari was okay, it was a bit on the chewy side and left a seafood taste afterwards, also no lemons with it, everywhere I order calamari they give me lemons. The Deep fried oysters were okay also, it was my first time trying them so I have nothing to compare it to. I really liked my Mango roll sushi, if you like more of a light fresh but still filling roll I recommend this The Iron man roll was good too it had different sauces to it and I liked the cream cheese taste to it I personally didn't try the Shrimp tempura roll but they said it was good too read more

Hostess was rude and unprofessional. First impression was horrible. If we hadn't just drove 2 hours to take our friend here for her birthday we would have walked out. No one with this attitude should be in the hospitality business. We opted to sit at the bar and wait for our table. The other hostess came and got us about 40 minutes later for our table. She had a mouth full of food and spoke to us with food falling from her mouth. It was disgusting. Management should provide them better training or replace these hostesses. Our waitress was Hailey and she was attentive and friendly, she always had a smile on her face. Dara was a true star! He made our birthday girl feel special and put up with all of our wild questions. He was a great cook and entertainer. He truly saved our evening with his incredible hospitality and warm personality. The food was great and we had some of the best sushi roll combos we have ever had. Overall she enjoyed her experience but the first impression was not the greatest and that is something that should be worked on. read more

Would have loved to review this establishment and have always wanted to try it. Made a reservation for 4:30 on my son's birthday. When we arrived they told me our reservation was for 4:00 & if our whole party wasn't there in 15 min we would have to let other reservations fill in & wait for the next available table. This was our first visit to Torii to celebrate an anniversary. It was early on a Tuesday (about 5pm). We were seated right away. The restaurant was quiet since it was not busy. Several TVs by the bar with varying options to watch (comedy, sports,news). Waitress gave us enough time to look over menu for drinks and checked in several times to ensure our drinks were full. Our chef Milo was awesome. Milo was funny and engaged in an active conversation with us while cooking our food. We got the Filet mignon & chicken combo and NY strip steak and Shrimp combo. Food was all cooked to our liking. Fried rice was crispy. We even got to catch zucchini thrown at our mouths (we both caught it!) The house made butter added delicious flavor to everything. I ordered ny steak with shrimp , fried rice soup and salad. I specifically requested no eggs as I am allergic, no onions in my rice nor vegetable. I drive home to eat, open my food and there's onions in the vegatables . I contacted the restaurant to let them know that they messed up, asked the receptionist what she would like for me to do with the meal as they were going to remake it. She stated to throw it away and that my order will be fixed. I took photos of all the items including the onions I started to pick out. I threw the food In my trash. The manager calls me back and says they need the food from my trash. I stated I took photos of the meal and she then said "it's hard to tell photos" I paid $57 and she told me that's too bad and hung up. I knew Id better have proof and well there you go. Before tonight (3/26/2024) my husband and I had only ordered through DoorDash several times (usually spending about $90) and had a good experiences with our food and even how well it was packaged. We came for dinner tonight for my Sister in Law's birthday for Hibachi dinner though they said it would be after 7:00 PM for Hibachi dinner (party of 7), we were there at 5:15 PM. My Sister in Law switched the dining to regular dine in since we have kids who couldn't wait that long. We even considered not joining them for dinner so the rest of the party could enjoy the experience quicker, but it wouldn't have been any different. The inside waiting area is so small and narrow. If you have small children, I would say it's a tight squeeze with our slim Graco stroller. We got seated at our table and no menus were given. So we were just sitting there until one server who was also bartending came and asked our drink orders. We all ordered waters and one soda, my daughter's water was missing and I just gave her mine, no problem. We ordered 2 appetizers which came pretty quickly. There were not enough appetizer plates for everyone at the table, we just brushed it off and shared. Server took our order quickly, we thought the food would come out fast, it didn't. We waited about an hour for our food.... Considering what we ordered, we didn't think it should've taken that long (3 soups, 2 Chicken Teriyaki Bento Plates, 1 order of Shrimp fried rice (for child), 2 spicy tuna rolls, 1 Ocean Roll, and Crunchy Roll. Everyone had received their food. Server came to our table and asked, "have everything?", we said actually no, our daughter's rice is missing. It took another 20 mins minimum for them to bring our daughter's rice out. If anything, it should've came out first. The air was blasting so cold, everyone closes to the window was freezing. My father in law was so uncomfortable, my husband switched him seats. On top of that, my Sister-in-law's vegetable tempura, was not all the way cooked. She bit into it and a bunch of raw tempura batter came squeezing out. When we left, she said her stomach started hurting. As we were leaving, the hostess said nothing, no goodnight, no bye guys. Didn't even look at us. Great birthday experience don't you think? For how much we paid, it wasn't worth it. read more
