The buffet offered some great options, including fried rice, noodles, orange chicken, broccoli beef, and even some decent cuts of steak. The pork buns were a surprise and were really tasty. Came here on a Saturday afternoon craving AYCE plus it had "sushi". We were in Modesto and thought, why tf not... there's no KBBQ or specialty AYCE sushi around. I feel like I've upgraded from typical Chinese buffets with the weird gelatin cakes from that one specific bakery that distributes said cakes to all these low-level Chinese buffets. But sometimes I gotta return to the trenches! The inside is cute with a lot of booths and Japanese decorations. The center consists of a sushi bar with a functioning boat, chefs making rolls and putting jello onto the little floaties. The back has the standard Americanized Chinese fare. Bonus: there is a "Mongolian BBQ" station where a cook will stir fry your creation. Pricing is pretty decent considering there is more than just the hot trays of Chinese. The food itself was pretty OK. Sushi is basic to below average with huge 65-35 rice proportions, so get ready to be full fast. The sushi chefs also focused on saucy rolls vs nigiri. Because there is seating around the sushi boat, it was funny witnessing socially-unaware people go up behind people sitting there to grab a plate even though there was a huge space at the end of the island without seating to avoid this. Place has been around for awhile, so expectations were about low to medium. I got seated at the bar where the floating boats of sushi floated by. You have to wave down or walk up to a waiter if you want something. There's a menu if you ask where it's included in the buffet that comes out made to order. I ate the Volcano roll and Salmon Skin Handroll from the menu, and I enjoyed it. Anything on the floating boats are average. I only like coming when it's busy so there's constant fresh nigiri and rolls on them. I only recommend the dinner time selections. The hot buffet has some solid selections, but I grabbed oysters mainly. In total I ate 14 plates from the floating boats, 2 salmon skin hand rolls, 8 oysters, and 1 Volcano roll. 3/5 stars for what it is, not bad but also not good. read more

1/2 I've been to Kobe Sushi Buffet many times in the past, but this was the last straw. I hadn't been here in a while and decided to give it another chance. Big mistake. The sushi boats still look cool, but that's about the only positive. Nearly everything was California roll-based, with little variety. Some of the sushi even tasted old, which is concerning. The hot buffet area was just as disappointing--no chicken skewers! Those were always my go-to here, and they're gone. What used to be a dependable spot has really gone downhill. I just had the worst experience with the onsite "manager" he is very unprofessional and disrespectful. We asked him politely if we can sit separately with 2 separate checks at the sushi boat bar and he went on to say I can't split a party so we told him no we will be paying separate with 2 different checks and he started laughing at us to this I went on to tell him to be respectful and stop laughing at us and he continued I asked what the owner or the managers name was and he did not want to give it to me at the end he said the owner is Steven. My kids love going there and it was my son's graduation and for one disrespectful ghetto person we had to leave. He honestly should be fired that is not the job for him. I paid $24 for dinner buffet here and honestly had a very disappointing experience. The rice was cold, not Japanese rice, and it lacked the proper vinegar taste that sushi rice should have. The fish and toppings were not fresh, and anyone with a sensitive stomach or weak health should really avoid eating raw items here. The hot foods were only warm, not hot, and the soup was extremely sour and unpleasant. I waited a long time for oysters, but when they arrived, they were very fishy-smelling and cold. About 10 minutes after eating, I started feeling nauseous, had stomach pain, and experienced full-body muscle aches, similar to food poisoning symptoms. Fortunately, I vomited shortly after, which may have prevented the situation from becoming worse. I strongly recommend that people with weak digestion or health issues do not eat here, and do not bring children, as their bodies are more sensitive. Update two years later from a 4 star to a 5 star review. I noticed that there were only pictures of the boats (sushi) but not the buffet itself so I added them. Much better service this time. No one is now standing around and starting at you and their Mongolian BBQ is freshly part of the buffet. You just go to the counter and pick everything that'd you'd like and the chief cooks it on the spot for you! Super cool. As my last review says, I do not like sushi but I still leave full and satisfied. Good pricing too. This review was for a Saturday @5pm dinner service and it wasn't packed this time. We went for the lunch buffet. It was mediocre at best. The sushi was all the same fake fish just packaged differently. No nigiri, nothing special. I saw large trays of premade nigiri sitting on the counter with cling wrap but never served and not refrigerated either. Food buffet was hot, clean, and okay, soup was nice. Upon walking in, I went straight to the woman's restroom! I walked into the bathroom and there were streaks on the stall walls/doors, no toilet paper in the dispenser, and my specific toilet was off center and you could see a little bit of the wax ring under the toilet. I didnt want to touch anything but HAD to go! I began to get ready to wash my hands and the soap was a water/soap mixture. Food here used to be good. My wife and I ate here for lunch today and the sushi seemed like it had been sitting out for a while (rice was hard) and had little to no flavor. The endamame was this puke green color, like it was a few days old. This used to be my wife's favorite place to eat. After asking for some of a sushi that they had prepared behind the sushi boat station, they happily gave it to me! They were quick and gave my a huge plate! I was just expecting two pieces like they serve on the sushi boats. My wife ate a few pieces and we figured we would just take home our left overs. We go to Kobes at least once or twice a month. They are so nice, create whatever we'd like. Their food is fresh and the sushi is delicious. The buffet is good and the mongolian bbq is awesome. The price is very reasonable and you can stay and eat for quite a while without being pressured to leave. The service is very good and quick to remove dirty dishes. The ambiance is family oriented with plenty of seating around the sushi boat as well as booths and family/party tables. Worth the drive (we drive 50-55 min) from Los Banos, and it's so worth it. read more

It was so horrible, everything was cold and the mongolian food section was a bad experience, i waited forever for someone to come help me. once someone helped me, i asked if they had imitation crab for my mongolian noodles and the guy said yes but he can't get it right now??? Then he told me to look behind me and get some off the buffet to bring to him, i looked at it and it was a crab cheese casserole! The sushi boats had a nice variety of sushi, well-made and great flavor. The sushi chef gave us specialty pieces of yellowtail to try. All of it was delicious. The Chinese food was good as well. First tried this place a few years back when first opened, but no review then - Not a Yelper yet. Do recall it was not as good as its name sounds. When see "sushi buffet", I think of all different kinds of sushi varieties (based on dining at other locations/cities with similar name "sushi buffet"). But all they have was just a few common basic sushi items, and everything else was like a regular Chinese buffet. Can't expect much for a small city I guess. Tried again recently for a Monday luncheon. Seems worst than before in that all they have (for lunch) was just different kinds of ROLLS, no nigiri, no sashimi, or any other sushi specialties or varieties. I really felt as if eating at a regular Chinese buffet, not sushi buffet. Furthermore, cannot believe they DO NOT have any hand sanitizer available for customers to use! Had to go to my car to bring my own sanitizer! This is a buffet with many people sharing the same serving spoons over/over! Don't know who's got germs or not. Then no sanitizer to clean our hands before touching/eating our food?!! Also, noticed at the floating boat area, all customers were seated very close to each other side-by-side, no spacing or social distancing at all. Felt unclean and unsafe to dine here. Been here numerous times, got there waited 15mins, the man was seating others that came in after us. They didn't have much of a variety at the sushi bar, but it was ok. Buffet area was ok. The main problem was when I paid by debit, was goin to leave a cash tip when my friends and I were done however the female busser grabbed my receipt and literally mumbles wow no tip and continues to mumble walking away, thought that was very rude of her. Upon leaving she continues to yell to her coworkers "they no tip" and sayin rude comments to us. After that the only tip I left was to be patient and not talk your way out of a tip. read more

I really used to like this place... before I had a baby that is. This place is incredibly unfriendly to babies, which is extremely sad and has caused my last 2 visits to be unpleasant. I discovered this place while pregnant and would frequent it with my husband. The food and service was usually always very good so we would always return. Unfortunately, that all changed for me recently. Today was my 2nd unpleasant experience. Last time, I hesitated to write because I wanted to believe it was all in my head. However, after tonight i realized it wasn't me, it w as indeed the service we received. The entire time we dined tonight, we did not receive not even ONE refill. All I was drinking was water... not that that should matter at all! Not ONCE did they stop by our table to clear off any empty plates. So by the end of dinner, our table was completely filled with plates. They stuck us in a back corner and acted like if we weren't even there! They wouldn't even look our way! When I would try and call our server over with an "excuse me" I was met with "one minute" and "I'll be right there" but they never came. The same can be said for other servers. No one would approach our table. It was very sad to be treated this way simply for coming in with a baby. This was my baby's first time sitting in a high chair in a restaurant and she did happen to drop 2 fries and an egg roll, but we picked them up swiftly after they fell because we didn't want to cause an imposition. However after tonight, it is settled we WILL NOT be returning. There's far too many restaurants in this area with way better service to ever consider this place again.
