I've had three meals now at Olmsted. The first two were fantastic, and the third was only okay, but the cocktails, charm, and backyard still make this restaurant a solid five stars for me. I'll keep my review to the food items that seem to still be available, though there were many other favorites, particularly the Watermelon Sushi and the Duck!
Food:
Romano Bean Frites: 3.5/5
These were very tasty, but not particularly memorable. Paired well with cocktails.
Gobi Pakora Cauliflower: 3/5
I found the sauce on this to be a bit too "goopy"
Cheese Fondue for Two: 5/5
I absolutely loved this dish. A small wheel of cheese (think the size of the brie you would get in the super market) has the top rind cut off and is melted, and is served with burnt rosemary, and bread cubes, pickled radishes, and apples for dipping. I really enjoyed the variety of dipping options, particularly the pickled radishes which provide a fantastic bite of acidity.
Carrot Crepe: 4.5/5
This dish seems to have become the "must order" of the menu, though I didn't try it out until my most recent visit. The crepe and clams are both perfectly cooked, and the dish itself is unlike anything I've had before.
Summer Truffle Chawanmushi: 5/5
Chawanmushi is a steamed egg dish with broth that is wonderfully flavorful and delicate. Would highly recommend. I believe they've now changed the dish for the season.
Heirloom Tomato Schnitzel: 3.5/5
A great option if you have vegetarians in your group, or just want some more veggies! I loved the concept, but the tomato itself was a bit bland. Perhaps the tomato we got was a bit underripe.
Grilled Pork Collar: 5/5
Some of the best cooked pork we'd ever had in NYC.
Frozen Yogurt with Lavendar Honey: 5/5
What a beautiful and simple desert. They've whipped the honey in such a way that it has become white and glossy, visually almost indistinguishable from the frozen yogurt. It is delightful texturally, and sort of toys with your mind as part of it is icy cold and they other is room temperature and sweet, but difficult to distinguish before eating a bite.
Old School Chocolate Mousse: 4.5/5
I'm not the biggest chocolate mousse fan, and I wouldn't call this particularly inventive or groundbreaking, but it is an absolutely perfect chocolate mousse, and that is hard to find.
Drinks:
4.5/5
I've tried a couple of the cocktails and by far my favorite cocktail is the Tarragon with Gin, Yuzu, Lime, and Soda. I think it may be my favorite cocktail of the year. Extremely refreshing and the yuzu pairs really delicately with the tarragon. It's the sort of drink you wish you had a pitcher of to drink on a veranda.
Their wine list is affordable and approachable.
A real standout from this restaurant is their tea program. They have hot and cold teas from a variety of countries. Would highly recommend ending your meal with a cup.
Ambiance:
5/5
If you arrive early, you'll be given the chance to wait in the beautiful little garden in the back and order appetizers and drinks. I would highly recommend this! It's wonderful being outside, surrounded by little lights and herbs sipping on cocktails under the stars. It's probably getting a little chilly now, but I will definitely be back as soon as it gets warm again.
Service:
4/5
Service is generally attentive and warm. The waiters were always willing to further explain the dishes or drinks.
Overall, Olmsted is one of my favorite new restaurants, and I look forward to returning again soon! read more
