    Crab Tostada
    Jeila F.

Chavela's is my boyfriend and I's FAVORITE mexican spot!! The two times I've been there, we've had such an amazing experience. Our waitress she's always super friendly, I can't remember her name off the top of my head since it's been a while but will be sure to give her shoutout next time. The drinks here are always perfectly balanced, doesn't feel watered down. I definitely recommend the crab tostada, it's always super fresh and I even took one to go last time. Ambience is super nice if you're going for a casual dinner. Very laid back and the seating offers more space than other locations in the same neighborhood.

This restaurant has the energy of a party as soon as you walk in . The bartenders are friendly and knowledgeable and don't miss the beef and fish tacos. Chavela's made good with the space by adding the outdoor dining merged into the facade. And when weather permits the actual outdoor dining is amazing.

Delicious and amazing service! It is absolutely beautiful inside!!! Amazing authentic Mexican food and decor. They were playing the jams too! We went for brunch and I believe I got the tres leches French toast. Delicious!

Fast and friendly service, super cute dining space, and delicious food!!! Solid experience overall :) Would come back for their happy hour and get some $4 tacos because the one I got for full price was goooooood. quesadilla was cheesy and flavorful yet not too salty. Salsa trio came with those huge chips, so fun! Ambiance is on the louder side, you can sit outside too but the streets are also loud LOL. quite dark and mysterious lighting

Came here on a nice spring day. They had tables outdoors so we sat out to enjoy the nice weather. Only complaint is the tables are quite small and cramped. For starters, we ordered the trio of salsas which came with pico de gallo, salsa verde, and salsa roja, and chips. The green sauce was our favorite. I really liked their chips. We also got the taquitos de Cangrejo, which were delicious and crispy. For entrees, we had the camarones a la Mexicans and plato don carne. The plates were huge and our table was too small to accommodate all the dishes. But the shrimps were delicious and cooked perfectly. I loved the sauce. The plato don carne was DIY and fun to assemble. It was a delicious meal but I thought the service was subpar.

Do not sleep on the Trout Guacamole. I'm still thinking about it - it was such a delicious combo. It was a busy restaurant even at 8:45pm on a weeknight but we didn't have to wait for a table. The place had live chatter and we loved the ambiance. Would be back!

There's nothing better than a warm tortilla with eggs, avocado, and beans in the morning. The "Plato Don" here includes that, plus refried beans, potato hash, and queso fresco all in one massive plate! Down it with a cold Michelada as the Mexican music plays and you've got yourself an excellent brunch.

Vida Verde Cocktail - Green Chartreuse, Cucumber, Mezcal

Strolling by on a Saturday night, Chavela's was attracting quite a buzz with a crowd outside and an exciting party atmosphere inside! We decided to come back later for a late-night dinner (last seating was 11 PM). Chavela's has delicious food and cocktails - and with fabulous service. Our waitress Savannah even taught us some dance moves! If it's still on the menu, I recommend the Vida Verde cocktail - a mezcal & green chartreuse concoction. Can't wait to return to try some of their tequila and mezcal cocktails. The food and drinks were reasonably priced for the high quality of offerings.

Had a craving for Mexican food after a post Brooklyn Botanic Garden visit with Yelp friend Sharon. It's been about a year since I dined at Chavelas and recommended we eat here. We arrived at 4 and were seated right away. Chavela's has a nice menu with numerous options from tacos, burritos, enchiladas, flautas, etc. We skipped appetizers and just ordered our entrees. I ordered the Hibiscus Jarrito which unfortunately was bland. Our entrees arrived fairly quickly; too quickly because I had to have my entree reheated. Ten minutes later it arrived and not to be picky the rice and beans were still lukewarm. This seems to be a consistent issue which is a bit hard to comprehend since the restaurant was not so busy. Another disconnect was being charged fifty cents for lime. What is consistent is the friendliness from the waitstaff and servers. Our waiter, Sergio, was beyond accommodating and very nice. The ambience is cool and I love the bar. Unfortunately, Chavela's lost a star due to these small disconnects.

Chicken Flautas on bottom and my friend's enchiladas with hibiscus drink on top. Delicious and great presentation!

We had a really nice time here yesterday after walking the lovely Brooklyn Botanical Gardens for over 2 hours! I was famished and Chavela's certainly didn't disappoint. My friend had cheese enchiladas and I opted for the chicken flautas as I needed something a bit less spicy. The dish had a fair amount of heat but the rice and beans perfectly offset that and I thoroughly enjoyed it nonetheless! The flavors were spot on and the presentation was colorful and appetizing. Our waiter Sergio was very sweet and attentive without being overbearing. Stellar service, atmosphere was fun and uplifting and the food was delicious and satisfying. Would definitely recommend.

Corn tortillas were a little dry, flavors a little bland, horchata too sweet. I really liked their red salsa and would recommend trying their salsa trio! Service was just ok as our waitress had an amazingly positive attitude, but the hostess offered one group the bar to wait for their entire group to arrive while she blatantly told me I can't be seated until my whole party arrives

I always love coming to chavelas, I get the same consistent food service and good food. This time I went I wasn't too fond of the drink I ordered but that's my fault for not reading it, but the shrimp was delicious. The place still looked like it is in good shape and clean as well.

I've been to Chavela's a few times now and it's always a fun time. I do have to admit that it's more a fun place to go for a hang rather than and amazing dining experience. That said, I was very happy to find a michelada on their menu and even happier that it was delicious. Their food is solidly good, not the best you'll have. I did have a delicious desert that was something of a banana cream pie. I'm sure I'll be back!

    Does this restaurant take reservations?

    Yes

I was told that they have Mariachis that play there. Is this true?

Not anymore. The location is too small.

Is the restaurant outdoor seating now?

Yes ! Lots of seats outside.

    Are they dog friendly?

They have outdoor seatings. I think you can have dogs outside. I am not sure about having your dog inside. It's pretty dark. People may step on your dog by accident.

    I wouldn't doubt it.

I wonder if they have a band that plays there?

No they don't its way to small to even fit a band.

Unfortunately this place fell very flat. Leading with what we liked: Their mocktail offerings were good, promising a 0.0% ABV which is hard to come across when mocktails are offered. They serve oysters, which adds to that aphrodisiac experience of the oh so 'wow this is a former brothel!'. The bartenders and servers were fast and very sociable with the more sociable customers. The immediate entrance is very tight, and it was uncomfortable navigating the space. We expected there'd be more seating in the back, which there was, but it was limited and not offered to us until we asked for it. We honestly had no clue where it would be and only asked because of how this place was advertised. While it was comfy once we made our way back there, it was reminiscent of a lounge style bar space that almost any bar could replicate with the right room and budget. We didn't feel as though this hit the spot and were let down by this experience. I'm not sure if I can judge the menu of drinks/ foods as expensive, but we left hungry bc we couldn't justify some of the prices. In addition, I've seen a lot of complaints about the volume of the music: it's definitely loud at the front but a lot lower in that back lounge space. It's as loud as any bar's music level would be, but truth be told we were expecting music that matched the vibe of what was advertised and yes, at a lower volume.

I've made it a point to visit every vinyl listening bar that I learn of in town, after enjoying the shared experience of someone curating a select vinyl list in intimate spaces in Tokyo. Few have been able to replicate the experience, but Honeycomb Hi Fi Lounge comes close. That the space is narrow with just a few seats along the bar and a few tables mimics the Japanese experience best, where you can almost have it so the whole room is having one conversation together. The music is the focus. The cocktail menu is rather simple, and my Stormbringer drink, with dark rum and ginger beer was not anything to write home about, but $15 is pretty low for cocktails these days so I'll take it. If they introduced new cocktails to the menu with more interesting ingredients I'd be more inclined to return, but the vibes overall are pretty good and the staff really nice.

My friend and I each order a cocktail, and are catching up. I'm from Brooklyn, however I no longer live here, and this was precious catch-up time with my friend. Then I get interrupted mid-sentence by the old-timer DJ from his low seat in a corner behind the bar. I had bumped the bar with my wrist (bumped my wrist watch as well, not deliberately) and then placed my hand down (granted- more than placed but definitely not slammed), and he decided to warn me that I COULD HAVE made his record skip. It was the Eagles or Santana (far from eclectic, but that's just me). I'm also 99% certain he turned the volume up afterwards, making it even harder to enjoy the company. After that interaction, I struggled to pick it back up with my friend, because I found that distraction very effing rude. When this "4th wall" gets broken down with service, it is hard to then enjoy the space in an uninhibited state. I am all for the Tokyo Vinyl Bar vibe, and I'm also for also giving talent an outlet to share their collection, but this interaction colored my experience, and I closed out after one drink and went elsewhere. I mentioned this to the bartender, and he was kind to offer a buy-back of a rare whiskey, which I did accept. 5 stars for the bartender, but 1 for my experience. I don't like to be harsh or unnecessarily cruel, but this is what it is. I have visited in the past and enjoyed myself. Nonetheless, I certainly won't be coming back.
