I come here everytime I'm in Brooklyn - yes family lives near by but also because their food is so good I went with my sister who is a vegan and my father (we eat meat) to dinner here the other night. Came here on a nice spring day. They had tables outdoors so we sat out to enjoy the nice weather. Only complaint is the tables are quite small and cramped. For starters, we ordered the trio of salsas which came with pico de gallo, salsa verde, and salsa roja, and chips. The green sauce was our favorite. I really liked their chips. We also got the taquitos de Cangrejo, which were delicious and crispy. For entrees, we had the camarones a la Mexicans and plato don carne. Had a craving for Mexican food after a post Brooklyn Botanic Garden visit with Yelp friend Sharon. It's been about a year since I dined at Chavelas and recommended we eat here. We arrived at 4 and were seated right away. Chavela's has a nice menu with numerous options from tacos, burritos, enchiladas, flautas, etc. We skipped appetizers and just ordered our entrees. I ordered the Hibiscus Jarrito which unfortunately was bland. Our entrees arrived fairly quickly; too quickly because I had to have my entree reheated. Ten minutes later it arrived and not to be picky the rice and beans were still lukewarm. This seems to be a consistent issue which is a bit hard to comprehend since the restaurant was not so busy. Another disconnect was being charged fifty cents for lime. What is consistent is the friendliness from the waitstaff and servers. Our waiter, Sergio, was beyond accommodating and very nice. The ambience is cool and I love the bar. Unfortunately, Chavela's lost a star due to these small disconnects. read more

We had a really nice time here yesterday after walking the lovely Brooklyn Botanical Gardens for over 2 hours! I was famished and Chavela's certainly didn't disappoint. My friend had cheese enchiladas and I opted for the chicken flautas as I needed something a bit less spicy. The dish had a fair amount of heat but the rice and beans perfectly offset that and I thoroughly enjoyed it nonetheless! The flavors were spot on and the presentation was colorful and appetizing. I also tried the short rib tacos, which were a little bit oily... But what really stood out to me about this place was the friendliness of the servers. For instance, one of the folks in our party ordered a dish and didn't realize that it came with pork, so they swapped it out for another type of meat, and still gave us the original pork tacos for the people in the party that do eat pork. I went for dinner around 7pm and it was super busy. We only waited about 15 minutes for a table but it is tight inside. it was also quite loud so we couldn't really have much of a conversation. Staff to be honest didnt seem to be pleased to be there, or just really unenthusiastic. Why I gave a nice tip, might be because the stare one gets while they wait for you to choose which tip to give which started at 20%. My companion scolded me and said should have given less Food portion was small for price point. Taste was also very small. Sangria was not bad, but tony glass (once you remove all the ice). Authentic Mexican brunch! My brother was in town so we stopped by Chavela's for brunch before visiting the Brooklyn museum. He got the Chavella's omelette and I got the short rib hash. We also had the guacamole appetizer. We enjoyed all of our food! For drinks, I started with the Carajillo Iced Coffee Cocktail and then switched to a few Spicy Margaritas which my brother was drinking as well. What's great about Chavela's is that the restaurant is large so we didn't have to wait like most we would at most brunch spots in the area. *Sniff sniff* This may be the ticket for what I was looking for. Chavela's may possibly have the best Mexican in Brooklyn. Which again, is not saying much, but here we are. If you are looking for Mariachi style music, cute waitresses, platos típicos, and that Tex-Mex vibe and decor, this will not be it. This is more upscale Mexican, with modern twists, funky music, and funky decor. There is a cantina inside, but it feels more like a city bar than what you would expect to see in a more traditional Mexican restaurant. I tried a few things and the food has plenty of spice and flavor. The guacamole might be the best I have had here in New York. It has tons of flavor and even brings home a bit of spice. The tortilla soup feels high end in terms of presentation, but the tomatillos in the soup give it an extra bit of flavor. It could use more chicken though. The enchiladas are unconventional. They taste great and have plenty of filling. I should have gotten the chicken ones as they are served with rice and beans. Sorry, all enchiladas should be served with rice and beans. Additionally, all burritos should be served with an optional ladling of queso on top of the burrito, even if it means paying extra. Flavor is key here, and the full Mexican experience means you have experienced a multitude of spices and aromas to give your stomach an easy time to digest it all. Make sure you order your dessert properly. Mine was wrong and was forced to send it back. At least they were nice and took it off my bill. It gets plenty busy here on weekends, but I would not mind stopping here on a weekday for lunch, but of course ordering lunch. Now that my tears have dried, I can confidently endorse them and encourage you to come out to Prospect Heights and get a handle on some of this food. read more

Not much to say about this place, was disappointed by the manager who approached to my table after complaining of the tree leches cake, I'm a chef with over 20 years of experience and when I tasted the cake was totally fine but the sauce they put under the cake was 100% sour, lemonade, he said he checked in the kitchen and it was fine. Need some training on tasting food here. Ambience was nothing out of normal. I can only say that the waiter was attentive all the time. I came here for brunch on a Saturday. We arrived soon after opening so it was empty, but it filled up by the time we left. Our waiter was very personable and friendly. To drink, I had the Tu Mama Tambien and loved it. It was sweet and subtly smoky from the mezcal. I also had La Diabla. It was fruity, but a little too sweet for me. To eat, I had the Hurarache with vegetables. It was a hearty dish. The tortilla base was very thick and a little tough to cut, but it paired well with the peppers and fried eggs. The dish had subtle flavors so I appreciated that it was served with hot sauce. However, the sauce was fairly mild and could've used a bit more kick. My friends loved the smoked trout guacamole, which was a pretty unique offering. The regular guacamole was tasty. Instead of chips, they serve it with round, crispy tortillas that you can break into pieces for dipping. It was a satisfying meal! read more

Fir drinks we ordered the Hibicus Agua Fresca and campachan Margarita and Sangria mixed together. For the appetizer, we ordered the ceviche. It can we 5 corn tostadas. All ingredients were fresh and quite tasty. Our meal included a chicken milanesa torta. It had lettuce, tomatoes,pinto bean spread, and avocados. The bread was fresh. It is made in-house. We also ordered the chicken enchiladas with green sauce. The dish came with rice and black beans. I was a little disappointed with the beans. Felt like they didn't have much flavor. The best thing I ate was the avocado taco everything else was not good. There is no seasoning on anything. They don't take reservations so you're waiting for like 30 minutes to get a table. Other than the food being bad they charge you for everything, we asked for limes they charged for limes, we asked for sour cream they charged for sour cream and never told us those come at additional cost. I've been to Chavela's 100 times, yet it still surprised me. My first time ordering Plato Don Carne and it was so big that I was able to share with my boyfriend. He also ordered an additional pork taco & rice/beans, but when I saw the chicken & steak platter with rice, black beans, guacamole, cheese, salsa, & mini tortillas we were smiling from ear to ear & realized we didn't need it. I love options! Everything was good as to be expected, even though I wanted spice/ steak cubes. They did offer a black spice which has to be ghost pepper because wheeeeeeww! Also, I ordered a large agua fresca tamarind flavor. The drink was really good, but had a lot of small ice. My server was what people would call a gringo, but smiled from ear to ear while giving great recommendations like the platter and the diabla coctail (which was strong, beautiful and flavorful. Also, loved that the ginger wasn't overpowering.) And i always describe the venue as gothic romance. Think Co Co's Disney movie, but intimate and for adults. I love, love, love Chavela's vibes so I have to start my review with that! I've been coming here for years and it has only gotten better in terms of the experiences I've been having. I know they closed some time back for renovations and I think it looks very eclectic, while still giving a cozy and inviting aesthetic. I will start my review of the food by saying that while I understand that they have to cater to the neighborhood's ever-changing demographic, Chavela's still needs to keep in mind that the food is Latin American and should have some flavor. We can't be preparing dishes of Mexican/Latin American/Caribbean culture and having it taste like it was cooked without love (aka seasoning). I've felt this way for some time now, but held off on writing a review because I felt maybe I'd caught them on a bad day. But now I have to say something because it's been the last few times I've visited. I'm not saying it's "all bad" because that'd be a blatant lie. However, some dishes were lacking the extra umph they needed to be standouts. For example, the seafood empanadas: they were filled with shrimp, crab meat, baby spinach and served with roasted tomato salsa. The presentation was great! The flakiness of the crust was PERFECT! However, after biting into it, the thrill got lost. No flavor whatsoever. Bland! I was most excited for this because I am a seafood lover and I feel like it's pretty hard to get seafood completely wrong, but this dish missed the mark. It was SO CLOSE to being amazing! All it needed was a little seasoned salt, black pepper, seafood seasoning, all-purpose seasoning--ANYTHING! It was underwhelming. I'm hoping that someone will see this review and that maybe (just maybe!) they will put some flavor in it for the people who TRULY LOVE AND KNOW good food! The main course of Pescado a la Veracruzana was great--for me. It was salmon baked with olives, capers, tomatoes, sweet peppers and rice. I loved that dish! It's one of my go-to's. The salmon was cooked just how I like it, crispy crust, but well-done meat. However, my brother had the same thing and his salmon was undercooked. It was pinkish-red on the inside and he wasn't feeling it so he didn't finish it. Can't blame him! We're Jamaican. We're not eating half raw/half baked salmon. The drinks were delicious, as usual. I had a mezcal margarita, my brother had a strawberry margarita and my sister had a drink called La Fresa (blanco tequila, strawberry puré, luxardo, cava, lime). All in all, the experience was a good one. Just hoping for some more flavor to be added to the dishes. Yes, gentrification is happening, but the quality of the food shouldn't have to suffer.
