My husband and I just tried to do lunch here because the on line rating is 4.6. We had house fried rice & sweet/sour chicken. ALL the food was so tasteless that we left most of it behind........didn't even want to take it home. The paste (not saucy) on the chicken was a hot pink/red we've not seen in nature. Very satisfied dinner experience here. The service is pretty good, which is not always common in a Chinese restaurant. I enjoyed the Szechuan-style spicy fish and tofu. The Cumin lamb and chicken with the crispy bone are great too, though I wish I was told the flavor profile of these two are highly similar. Was in the Tempe area and Old Town Taste has been on my list of restaurants to try for awhile. I love the dry numbing spiciness that Sichuan cuisine is known for, and I was not disappointed. I have a medium spice tolerance and the Chongquing style chicken hurt so good! It was absolutely delicious but did push the upper bounds of my tolerance level. Well... I feel this place is less than honest...I went there with many family members and ordered a dozen dishes or so... some dishes were good but the noodle dishes were soggy & salty. They also charge extra for rice which is uncommon in Chinese restaurants. I stepped up to pay and was given this electronic pad that doesn't show the itemized bill except the total charges and in big prints after the total was TIPS. I see the total was around $205 and of course you can't skip the big TIPS PRINT and you have to hit the various boxes for TIPS, so I put in $30 and sign and asked for the receipt. Later at home I see that the bill included a $29.23(18%Service Fee charge), $6.65(3% credit fee charge) and of course, $30 Tip because I didn't know they already included the 18% Service fee charge. I made a trip back and they refunded my tip charge... I think by law they have to disclosed up front that they charge for credit charge fees and if the total already included service fees. I advise everyone needs to look at their receipts !! read more

The service was great. The waiter was very friendly and gave us explanations on the food and recommendations. The food came out decently fast and came out hot. The scallion pancake was nice and chewy and the portion size was on the larger side. Overall pretty good but it was what I expected for scallion pancakes. Pretty basic. The chongqing style chicken was fried perfectly. They were very light and crispy with lots of flavor. The chicken has a pretty good kick to it and is Mala spicy (lip numbing). The eggplant is also very good. There is no fishy taste or smell, the texture is good, and the flavor is outstanding. The fried spicy fish was delicious! I kept going back for more. They checked in with me to see if I was okay with the spice level originally, and I downgraded it a notch as it was my first time trying it. The level 3 was perfect! The fish was fried perfectly and so tender on the inside. Loved the addition of jalapeños throughout. 10/10 dish. My partner ordered the pineapple chicken and loved it. I thought the chicken inside could have been higher quality but it was yummy. Service was nice and attentive. The service was fast, though I would recommend that you clarify which Szechuan spicy fish tofu you want. They have two, one in a soup, and fried. We wanted the fried, though they brought the soup! Everything I've ever tried here is EXELLENT. I've been here with different groups and every time we all end up trying each others food. Hands down, there's never been even an okay dish. Everything is phenomenal! Some of my favorites are the pineapple gourmet chicken (a sweet and sour chicken which has amazing sauce, perfectly crispy coating on the outside, and moist, tender chicken on the inside), beef broccoli (perfectly tender and spiced) and fried rice (cooked to perfection with a very balanced blend of spices). The service is also top notch. Reasonably priced (particularly for such great food) and great ambience. I don't know of a better Chinese restaurant in the Phoenix Metropolitan area. read more

This spot is 100% a hidden gem. Portion sizes is usually family style so it is best that you eat with a party. My friends and I ordered the braised pork belly, ma po tofu, garlic green beans, fried lamb with cumin, pineapple mayo shrimp, and my personal favorite, Szechuan fried fish. All dishes were very delectable except the pineapple mayo shrimp. The shrimp was just coated in mayo which I did not really enjoy. Everything else had a great numbness and spiciness which I think they should add more spice too. I can't wait to come back here again. Met up with Norm for dinner to try Old Town Taste. I was pretty excited to check it out, when I got their Norm already had a table for us. Old Town Taste is a pretty cute place! I knew I wanted to try a spicy dish, I wanted to experience the Szechuan pepper, so after checking out the menu I went with the Chongqing Style Spicy Chicken. When this dish came out, it looked amazing, the crispy chicken surrounded by bright greens of the green beans & reds of the chili peppers, very eye pleasing! But the taste of the dish was better than its looks! Crispy, crunchy, tender bites of chicken bursting with flavors of salt and peppers. Oh, the peppers! It's an experience for your mouth! The Szechuan peppers feel like champagne bubbles on your tongue popping and the numbing sensation, such a treat for your mouth! Literally couldn't stop eating this dish! Soup was not overly salty and oily which was very appreciated. The dried pot lotus was very delicious. Oily as expected but flavor was on point! Lotus was also cooked just right. Chongxing style spicy chicken is a must!!! the chicken is fried so crispy and the flavorings are delicious. I love that there's also green beans in the dish too. The excessive dried peppers are also very fun to eat. Fish flavored eggplant strips is always tasty. The eggplant came out whole and the waitress cut the eggplant for us at the table. Was surprised to see if presented this way since i feel like it's typically already cut for you. House special spicy dry pot had so many different ingredients in it which made it very fun to eat. Lots of different textures. I especially liked the thin sliced potatoes and the lotus root. Although the shrimp was inconvenient to have to peel, it was also so yummy. Old Town Taste is located in Tempe and is a Chinese Restaurant that serves Szechuan Style Food and also mild authentic style Chinese Food. This is a casual restaurant with wait service. It's bright from the front glass wall and offers traditional tables and booths. The food might be meant for sharing because the portions we received were double sized portions. We shared two plates. One was Szechuan Style Spicy Fish ($15.99) and the other was Fried Eggplant, Bell Pepper and Potato ($12.99) and one side of rice ($1.00) We started with the Eggplant Dish. I had this dish before somewhere else and it did differ but still was very good. This version of it is mostly eggplant and is much lighter. This is a mild dish. The Szechuan Style Spicy Fish is covered in lots of chili peppers and mouth numbing Szechuan peppers were used. I liked that this dish also came with fried green beans. The mild white fish was coated and fried but wasn't greasy. This dish was DELICIOUS! I am so happy that they served me the dish the way it should be made. Service was outstanding! I came to Old Town Taste after hearing tales of their pork hock, and it did not disappoint! Ambience: there was lots of seating, the staff were attentive (especially with water once the spice hit, ha), and it doesn't hurt that there's a boba shop right next door! Food: For our party of two, we got the Pork Hock with chili sauce as well as the House Special Spicy Pot. Wow, when these two items came out, it was glorious. If you're aiming to impress, Old Town Taste does it right. The Pork Hock: some menus also call this item a "pork knuckle or pork shank". This is a huge bone-in piece of fatty pork that's been braised until very tender and is usually served with a brown sauce. Old Town Taste added some chili oil as well. This dish was definitely the star. House Special Spicy Pot (note: not to be confused with the House Special DRY Spicy Pot which is not a hot pot / I made this mistake!): I understood this dish to be a sichuan-style hot pot with all of the typical hotpot fixings like lotus root, bean curd, quail eggs, glass noodles, and even spam! The presentation was in a tray which was a bit unusual and honestly, I would have preferred the dry pot, because it was very saucy/oily and competed with the pork hock. However, it was still delicious, and we enjoyed fishing for little treasures in the hot pot. The portions are huge, and we were able to enjoy the leftovers for many meals afterwards (pro tip: toss the chili sauce with noodles or marinate tofu in them). Indeed: a colleague of my partner's saw his lunch of leftovers and literally went the next day!
