Went there for a quick lunch before catching the Amtrak. The restaurant, opened in 1850s was said to be the oldest dining salon in Washington DC. The vibe confirms this: huge dining rooms, huge bar areas, gorgeous decors, and numerous newspapers etc. about the events that happened there. Of course, the restaurant was packed with tourists, but due to its size it was not difficult to reserve a seat just 2 days before. For food I got the Hot Roast Beef sandwich no sauce and sub side with asparagus. The dish came out slowly perhaps because there were too many people (? So I had to devour it in just 10min... The sandwich was stuffed with tons of roast beef, as well as some melted Gruyère cheese and cherry pepper relish. The beef was kind of dry to me; I wish I could get a side of jus to dip in. The relish was fantastic: spicy and a bit sweet and sour. I also liked the asparagus which was topped with parmesan and pine nuts. The staff acted warm and welcoming but I felt that they were mostly just reciting the scripts. Still, because of its history, food and location, I recommend you to try this restaurant when visiting DC!
One of the most reviewed restaurant in DC so I make sure to stopped by during my trip. No reservation but we were seated right away. There's a lot of tables and always a line but I would say it moves fast. Kind of dark inside. The booth has some super worn seats. I got the scallops with grits and unfortunately the grit kind of ruin the whole thing. It was really raw for my liking and the vegetables were so random ... nothing tied the dish together. Scallops were good but that's about it... the steak frites looked and tasted a lot better. Kind of expensive so make sure you don't make the mistake like I did.
After some evening events, I stopped into Old Ebbitt Grill for a final cocktail and some bar bites. The large pretzel was executed perfectly--crunchy on the outside, soft in the middle, with a balanced amount of salt that wasn't overbearing. The cheese sauce was great for dipping, and the other side sauce had a nice little kick to it. I also ordered the house chili, which was solid and well-done, though nothing extraordinary. Having worked in the building for over a decade, I wanted to leave a reflection on a place I've frequented for so long. The staff here is consistently fantastic, managing the heavy crowds with ease. It remains one of those classic, high-energy spots in DC that carries a distinct "must-see" reputation. That said, I truly miss the old side takeout kitchen that used to operate in the atrium, serving breakfast and lunch to the building's workforce. It was a fantastic setup with daily chef-designed menus, and it was always busy, so it is a shame it didn't last financially. Even with that change, the main bar area remains a reliable, historic staple for a late-night drink and a bite.
Yeah, definitely one of those places to come to if in town. I am skipping straight to dessert and saying right now the carrot cake is top two in my book. I am watering at the mouth thinking about it. Texture, flavor, all of it, absolutely delicious. Lets get back to everything else now. Was a 45-60 minute wait so we went to the back bar which was recommended to us. Beautiful bar with artwork, and I liked the low light setting. Host said expect a text when table is ready. We enjoyed ourselves in the mean time not really looking at the time, but, it did feel strange that we were not called on after an hour. Did see some people being seated that were in the lobby with us so I was expecting soon. I eventually got up and asked and my guess is they took the wrong number down and or forgot about us. But they quickly sat us down and gave us a wonderful server, forgot the gentleman's name but he my only complaint was you could tell when he went out for a cigarette break. The food. - Chowder had amazing flavor. I like it thicker so I added the table bread to it which made it. - Pork chop was spot on. Nice thick cut and the char on top. Perfectly cooked. Leftovers made for a great morning snack before traveling home. - Side of Mac & Cheese, yum. Cheesy just as it should be. But yeah, definitely make a trip here if you can.
I have no clue what the hype is about everything was fine just mediocre. We had a reservation for a weekday lunch after looking at the museums. The host asked "Whose Birthday are we celebrating?" Only for our server to never inquire about it later nor did they do anything for dessert nor were we offered if we wanted to order dessert. Okay so we sit down and there's a hair on the plate at the table. We informed our server and all interactions with her she seemed annoyed and bothered. Never apologized nor said anything about the hair on the plate. The food, bland. We got the calamari which was pretty good found it unique to also have fried peppers in there. I got the Walters Favorite which is a hot pastrami sandwich. It was missing mustard or something to balance out the flavor profile it was just lackluster. Ruben was okay, and the horseradish mayo on the roast beef was too strong. The best thing was probably the oysters (not pictured). We were there for happy hour and got a discount. NOTE: their only happy hour offering is oysters, no drinks. The amount of times we had to flag our waitress down for everything was so frustrating. It was not that busy and Id see her chatting with a coworker on the side. We had to ask for EVERYTHING all while enduring her attitude or feeling like Im bothering her. When we closed out never told us once goodbye or have a good day. Old Ebbitt, please do the following: - Train your staff to prioritize customer service - Hire people that are friendly instead of cold - Season your food - Ensure cleanliness of the facility (forgot to mention, the bathroom had all kinds of paper on the ground!)
Such a classic Washingtonian institution! I have coming here since I was a child and love everything on the menu! We were lucky enough to walk in on a Friday night at 6 PM and we're sat immediately at a two top and have the sweetest waitress! She took such amazing care of us, even hearing my dad say in passing happy birthday to me, and brought out a dessert! The ambiance in old ebbits is just that of a different time, when drinking a martini at lunch and writing a Pulitzer Prize winning article at the same time was a thing! It's so classic
As a solo diner visiting DC, I could not have picked a better spot than Old Ebbitt Grill. The atmosphere alone is worth the visit. The inside is huge, full of history, and has that classic old Washington charm that makes the experience feel special from the moment you walk in. I ordered the Reuben and it was absolutely delicious- perfectly balanced, flavorful, and comforting without feeling too heavy. The whipped potatoes were buttery and light, not overly salted and had great flavor! I also tried the oysters, which were incredibly fresh, clean tasting, and high quality with absolutely no fishy flavor. What really elevated the experience was the service. The staff was attentive, welcoming, and made dining solo feel comfortable and enjoyable. You can tell this place has mastered hospitality over the years. Awesome spot all around and easily one of my favorite dining experiences in DC. Highly recommend whether you're with a group or dining alone!
Great spot, walkable from The White House. Lovely decor, kind of old school in a good way. Very family friendly! They have a reasonable kids menu with lots of options and it comes with a drink. The service was excellent - very patient with kids. I highly recommend making a reservation - it was very busy when we went for lunch. If you can't get a res, try to snag a seat at the bar. Grab a delicious drink while you're there.
Quintessential DC dining experience! This restaurant is a five-star experience in terms of vibes, food quality, and overall experience. While our server was a little low energy, he was attentive and professional. We enjoyed all of the dishes and loved how we could have a table conversation in our booth without yelling, while enjoying the lively hub-bub around us. Will plan to return every time we're in DC!
What can be said that hasn't already been said about the Old Ebbitt Grill in Washington DC? The menu is diverse, unique and it's the place to see and be seen for the lunch hour or for dinner. Here's a pro tip, one that a lot of people know. But if you've never been... Lean in... The grill has four different bars with instant seating service in the event. You have a one or two hour wait, just say it it's worth it and it's good.
We arrived here without reservations on a weeknight and got on the waiting list. I've dined here in the past and enjoyed my dining experience here at the oldest restaurant in Washington D.C. The interior decor is beautiful and nostalgic with antiques; paintings and the bar have various taxidermy animal heads that the were caught by a by President Teddy Roosevelt. Our party dined on oysters, lump crab cake, scallops, pork chop and I went for the boneless ribeye. All the food was delicious, and we had a happy ending with the bourbon chocolate chip bread pudding. Service is professional and impressive. Overall, a great dining experience again, and I highly recommend the Old Ebbitt Grill.
Old Abbott Grill is a very classy establishment. with a long history in the Washington DC area. The inside is visually very appealing with wood heavy accents everywhere and beautifully decorated, which adds so much to the overall dining experience. The centrally located bar is absolutely stunning and oozes class adding to the overall ambience of this establishment. For our first meal here, which was during their brunch hour on a Sunday, we had crab cakes, shrimp, and their bacon cheeseburger. As appetizers we also got their zucchini chips and their large pretzel with cheese. All the food was well made and very tasty where our favorite was the crabcakes. Relative to the staff they were friendly, polite, and very professional about their business. Clearly an emphasis for this business was placed on having a first class wait staff, and it showed! Overall, we really enjoyed our meal here albeit at a higher cost than you would pay at many other establishments. The proximity to the White House, the history of the facility and quality of the food comes at a cost, but it was worth it in our opinion as this is a dinner we will remember for quite some time. Also, we had added satisfaction of bringing our grandchildren here where this was definitely viewed as a special occasion for them that grandma and grandpa arranged. Nice!

For so many positive reviews here, I can hope that my group just visited them on a subpar day. Our experience was mediocre all around. It was a busy January Saturday. I put our name in for a 4-top and was told it would be a 30-minute wait. Instead, it was about 10 minutes and we were seated at the table right next to the host stand. With so many people shuffling around right there, it didn't help to provide any relaxing sort of atmosphere at all. Our server was nice but scattered. It took a while to get each step of our meal, which was not ideal when we were on a time crunch as DC visitors for the day. I'd say we were there 30 more minutes than we really needed to be. Three of us ordered the crushed velvet cocktail. I'd say that was my highlight. It was really well made. I ordered the bacon pimento burger medium well, no pink. It was stupid hard to hold so I ended up putting it down and cutting into it to eat with my fork and knife. When I did, I was greeted with a bright pink burger. Ugh! Again, we were on a time crunch and I was with friends I don't see often, so I wasn't going to make it a big deal or ask for it to be remade, but dang, it shouldn't be so hard to following cooking instructions. Hasn't this place been around long enough to understand how important that is? There's also a split charge recovery fee, which I didn't notice but was indeed on the menu. It just hit a little harder having to pay them $1.27 extra after a disappointing burger. I will say the fries that my friends had were good. I ordered a side salad with my burger, but did end up picking on their fries especially toward the end when the server wasn't very present. The bread and butter was good as well. For the amount I paid for a drink and a burger, I highly doubt I'd entertain a return trip. But I'm glad others like it. read more
After the White House tour one of the Secret Services suggested Old Ebbitt for breakfast. My husband said the Benedict was perfect i thought the suace needed Tarragon but it was creamy, smooth, a hint of lemon was so good. The waffle was crispy, flaky, light just like i LOVE it! This place is phenomenal! There's a reason it has such a high rating after almost 10,000 reviews. My girlfriend and I stopped in on a random day in DC after hearing about this place for a while. We were definitely not disappointed. We started off sitting at the bar while we waited for our table as we didn't have a reservation. The bar service was great. The bartender offered menus and waters to start. He then gave some drink recommendations. We enjoyed our drinks until our table was ready. The food here was very good. We started with the meatballs and the free bread. The meatballs were good but not the best we've had. The free bread was pretty good though! Especially dipped in the marinara sauce. My girlfriend ordered the jumbo lump crab cake sandwich and I got a bite. I can say that they're known for their crab cakes for a reason. It was so flavorful and fresh tasting! I would definitely go back for it. I ordered the Steak & Eggs from the brunch section of the menu. It was definitely a quality NY strip for $30. The eggs were also well cooked and seasoned. The ambiance of this place adds to its charm. It's claim to fame is being the oldest tavern in DC. It definitely has an old British/Irish inspired feel inside. There's tons of cool decorations on the walls as well as little pieces of history. It's pretty casual but feels comfy at the same time. The service at our table was good. It was busy so I can't blame the time for the food or anything on anyone. It was a Saturday afternoon in the heart of DC so it's to be expected. Our waitress was kind and visited many times even though she had a lot of tables. This is a gem in the heart of DC. It's easy to walk to from many touristy places. It's also not far from the metro if you take that in. Parking is available but isn't guaranteed so that's something to keep in mind if you drive. Stop in if you're in the area and give it a try. Went here on a Saturday afternoon for a quick bite and a beer. We ordered a glass of cold Yuengling, half dozen Oysters and Fried Calamari. Oysters are fresh, sweet and delicious, Calamari was soft and tasty. Our servers at the Main Bar (Abby and Tal, I think the names) are friendly and attentive. They checked and asked if the foods are good and to our likings, offered for another round of drinks...overall 5 star service. This place has a lot of history. Must to see and visit when you're in DC area. read more

Great restaurant, food was incredible and very accommodating for people with GF restrictions, the service was good with kind wait staff. The ambiance was interesting. The restaurant had paintings of people in the nude which was surprising considering there were kids. Located close to a lot of US Govt. buildings so good for visitors and other government employees. read more

Stumbled upon this restaurant while walking through the area and so glad to stop in and give it a try. Every detail of the decor is stunning from art to the antique lamps to the coat hangers at the side of each table, it was exactly what you'd expect to find in the heart of DC. I must also add that the place is quite big with several dining areas and bar areas. Their rich history makes them a notable place in DC to dine and I must admit, the food was delicious and worth what was plated. One thing noticed was the large staff throughout the restaurant which provided excellent service from the moment you walk in. They accommodate food allergies and also have an incredible oyster bar with a variety of oyster dishes and styles. From their brunch menu, available until 4pm, the fried chicken rice bowl was an absolute delight with honey-sriracha tossed chicken breast, farro, hard-boiled egg, bacon, Honeycrisp apples, watercress, ginger pickled cucumbers and scallions. This was a perfectly balanced bowl with a great blend of textures and flavors that truly complement each other well. The crisp apples with the soft rice and savory nuggets of chicken in one bite makes your taste buds do a little happy dance! The Chesapeake Bay Blue Catfish Sandwich consisted of cornmeal crusted catfish, lettuce, tomato, Cajun remoulade on a potato bun and coleslaw.. my only criticism is that the coleslaw was lacking but the catfish sandwich was superb, you get a beautiful portion of fish and it is made well. I advise using a rideshare app or walking to this restaurant as it is the best way to navigate the area. You can easily walk a few steps over to the White House after brunch! I'd definitely recommend checking this restaurant out, whether you're a local or just visiting. read more

Food was outstanding! My favorite appetizer was the Oyster Rockefeller. If you're feeling breakfast, I recommend the "Breakfast Sandwich". And for kids, the "kids waffles". If you're feeling dinner, I recommend "Walter's Favorite". I'm not sure which ones are for the brunch menu, but I bet all the food is fantastic. The service was amazing. The food came out quick, hot and fresh. Our waiter was so nice too. The ambience is great. The seats are comfortable, It's not too crowded and loud. This was my first time ever eating at Old Ebbitt Grill and all around it was an extremely excellent experience. It was the day after Christmas at 1:00 and the place was packed but we lucked out and were able to grab two seats at the bar. Even though it was extremely busy, Marcus our bartender never made us feel rushed or that he didn't have time for us. When he found out we had never been there he went over some of their best sellers and gave us a card on the history of the place. We decided to split a cheeseburger and try their clam chowder. Marcus also gave us on the house a cup of their Maryland crab soup as it's one of their best sellers/signature soups. I would have never ordered it but once trying it, I liked it better than the clam chowder. My husband thought it was good but not as good as the clam chowder. The burger was done perfectly and as asked. The fries were good and the burger juicy. You know a restaurant is dong well if they can prepare a burger, something simple well. They were even great to bring it out already halved and on separate plates. I love when restaurants do that. It was beautifully decorated for Christmas and would come back without hesitation for another great meal and service here. read more

5* experience from this classic and oldest bar in DC. 5* service. So, so good from Candace and team during Sunday brunch frenzy. Never wanted for anything, lots of smiles, helpful recommendations, and just overall amazing service. Really good meals. I tried the Chicken and Waffle and the Salmon Salad. Both were very good. Hard to go wrong with these two classics and Ebbets pulls it off. Especially the chicken, wow, plump, juicy, and crunchy. Loved it. Oh, and even the free bread was so good from soft, moist, hot, flavorful bread to the soft butter to complement it. Keep this in your back pocket for any occasion. It is rare that I am impressed by a burger, but this place really hit the spot for lunch. My coworkers and I while in DC decided to stop at this staple restaurant. We only waited for five minutes because they have an additional seating in the back. The new seating area allowed the restaurant to feel open and bright. They were easily able to split checks for five people and our food came out fast. My burger was something I had never seen before...a well flavored, perfectly cooked (medium) burger with fried oysters on top. This delicious mouthful was unexpected and enjoyable. I substituted my fries for a fresh garden salad so I would feel too heavy which complimented this juicy burger. read more

While visiting DC I was told by a local to visit this restaurant bar before I leave and they turned me on to a gem! This place was everything you can ask for in an American bar. The food was amazing my steak was cooked to perfection along with the asparagus and broccolini (normally comes with potatoes instead of broccolini but i wanted all vegetables). The bartenders pour heavy and often as well. I met some friendly folks who offered to pay for my drinks as well. The ambiance is rustic with a modern touch. One of the patrons told me that senators regularly have dinner there on any given day. This is going in my book of favorites for DC for sure! read more

There is clearly a reason that Old Ebbitt Grill is the oldest restaurant in DC. The atmosphere is very lively, the food is good and the service is quick. The menu covered a wide variety of foods like steaks, seafood, burgers, sandwiches and more. I got the "CRAB & ARTICHOKE DIP" and the "JUMBO LUMP CRAB CAKE". The "CRAB & ARTICHOKE DIP" is a good-sized portion and can easily be shared as an appetizer between 3 to 4 people. The "JUMBO LUMP CRAB CAKE" was small, especially for the price but it was well prepared. In terms of service, I appreciated the speed at which the food came to the table after the order was placed. Additionally, my server was kind and diligent. The restaurant was also able to accommodate allergies and put an allergy marker wood pick on the food. In terms of location and layout, the restaurant is large and has a lot of seating however, it was very busy so I would recommend making a reservation. Old Ebbitt Grill is also located on the street next to the White House and a few blocks away from the Washington Monument which makes it a great and convenient place to stop by if you are touring the sites of DC, or if you work in the area. Overall, Old Ebbitt Grill is a great restaurant and I recommend stopping by if you are looking to have a nice meal in DC. read more
I could eat here everyday and never be disappointed. They have huge platters of seafood so if you enjoy oysters, clams and shrimp I would for sure recommend them. Super fresh tasting and delicious. For dinner I had the crab cakes and they were great. You can tell that they are made with mostly crab instead of other places I've tried where their crab cakes seem to be mostly filing. The servers were very friendly and the restaurant as a whole is very cool. read more
Going to DC to see the holiday decorations is a tradition for us, and part of our celebratory outing is always to eat at Old Ebbitt Grill. We discovered that they opened again for breakfast in 2022, so we made a reservation at 10 am. We whizzed into town with no traffic. It was amazing, as always. I had the beautiful yogurt & granola bowl with fruit & a side of turkey sausage (the best sausage I have had in ages). My husband had a big breakfast with eggs and pancakes. Old school power hangout. Awesome ambiance. The oysters were so fresh but a little pricey - wait for happy hour 3-5pm and 11pm-1am. I had my go to Trout Parmesan. It was pretty good. 4 stars worth. Fish was thin and batter was thick and on the oily side. Flavor was really good. Our waiter Justin was fantastic. read more

My wife and I came here after a White a house tour so we were hungry. It was VERY busy when we arrived around 1 pm on Saturday. The hostess told me it would be about 45 minutes so we left our name and number (to text me) and went off to do some quick sightseeing. We returned a little early and sat at the bar for a beer. Our table was surprisingly ready when projected. Our meal consisted of three types of raw oysters, a shepherd's pie, and a lump crab cake. Everything was above par. Delicious and flavorful. Note the shepherd's pie is only good for St. Patrick's Day weekend so hurry! Service was on time, with plates spaced out perfectly. Staff were all pleasant and friendly. The ambiance is definitely "old school" which felt very comfortable. We ended with the bread pudding an Irish coffee and a melting thin mint. What an awesome experience! read more

This place is a DC staple! It's been on my list forever and have always heard amazing things but never been. We finally decided to randomly stop by for a late dinner - we just happened to be in the area. We got there around 9pm and didn't have to wait at all (group of 5) surprised about that because it was still packed in there! Our waitress was great! She was very attentive, gave some recommendations, and she was so surprised that 5 DMV residents have never been here -- clearly doing something wrong with our lives . We started with the calamari which was solid. I decided to get the chicken fettuccine. I usually don't go for the pastas, but these are made in house and you can tell. The pasta was fantastic! We all shared the apple crumble, I would say I would like more crumble less apple. And the salted caramel bread pudding was SO GOOD! Wish we got two. Check it out! You won't be disappointed. The menu is LARGE you will find something for everyone. read more

Not currently, but it may return depending on the season.
What's the dress code?
I asked them when we went and they said, everything from a tux to shorts and a t shirt. So, it is whatever you would like. From the feel, though, it's a sort of business casual.

I think it'd absolutely be a great place for a date! It's a beautiful location, they have delicious food that's served attractively and the service is great too. I would take a date there, but my wife would get angry...
